$250M superyacht Liva O draws 'big' attention on Seattle's Lake Union

SEATTLE - The superyacht LIVA O, owned by billionaire Stephen Orenstein , has made a notable appearance on Seattle's Lake Union . 

Measuring 387 feet, LIVA O is the largest superyacht ever built by the esteemed German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen . For comparison, a Washington state Olympic Class ferry measures 362 feet.

Launched as the shipyard's latest masterpiece, LIVA O represents a significant achievement for Abeking & Rasmussen, which has been in operation for over 115 years. "We have once again succeeded in building an exceptional yacht," said Matthias Hellmann, CEO at Abeking & Rasmussen. "By upholding our values of innovation, quality, and client satisfaction, we have created a yacht that sets new industry standards."

Designed by Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris, the yacht features a sleek black hull and offers luxurious amenities, including a Neptune Lounge with an underwater view, a swimming pool, a helicopter pad and a crow’s nest. The vessel also employs a diesel-electric propulsion system for quiet navigation and maneuvering. 

So how much does a yacht of this size cost? According to Superyacht Fan , Orenstein bought the yacht in 2023 for $250 million and estimates its annual running cost to be $15 to $25 million.

Who is Stephen Orenstein?

According to Forbes , Stephen Orenstein is a German-American business executive with extensive commercial real estate holdings in Germany, Italy, the U.K. and the U.S., and holds a stake in the German soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt. 

Formerly owning 75% of Supreme Group, a logistics firm that supplied food and water to the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, Orenstein took over the company in 1985 after his father's death. 

Forbes estimates his net worth at $2 billion. 

The yacht's presence in Lake Union is drawing attention from locals and yacht enthusiasts alike, marking a significant milestone in Seattle's maritime scene.

SHERPA // Feadship

Sherpa - also known as yn 815 is a rugged luxury yacht with a strong look..

SHERPA features an exterior and interior styling by RWD , the naval architecture was an in-house job by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects. The vessel has a length of 73.60 meters.

The owner wanted a vessel with a lot of storage for equipment, large tenders and land vehicles for adventures around the world. Two cranes, one with a reach of twelve meters, the other one reaches twenty meters. Furthermore, a helicopter platform is there as well.

Her explorer-like exterior profile is accentuated by an unfaired hull which leaves the plate work and welding exposed. This sturdy finish was requested by the owner who wished to generate an industrial look.

The yacht features an owners’ suite on the main deck, two VIP suites, and four guest cabins. Furthermore, there is an observatory on the bridge deck. Aft under the helicopter platform is a lounge, dining area, and a bar.

The hatches of the big tender garage open differently. One starboard hatch opens up, the port side hatch folds down. Tender storage is also on the main deck. On the port side is a very big crane for a tender about 10m, the space on the starboard side is a bit smaller. Between this storage is a glassed corridor to connect the aft area with the forward area.

I visited the yacht during the Superyacht Press Tour 2018 but no pictures are allowed (superyacht business as usual). The interior is dominated by dark wood. The bridge has a nice lounge aft with very big windows. Also, the crew area seems to be spacious in comparison with many other yachts.

Meet the Crew

Captain John Bernard has a Master Captain License with the USCG and over 30 years experience as a sailor. He holds numerous patents for his work as an electrical engineer and inventor in Seattle and San Francisco. He has captained dozens of vessels up and down the west coast of the US as well as operated charter catamarans in Hawaii.

Matt is a technology leader by day, mariner by night. Matt has been sailing various small craft for over 20 years beginning in his teenage years on the east coast of the United States. By day he works in the software field developing autonomous vehicles.

Where to begin? Can’t speak enough kind words about Serafina. We took a sail out for our anniversary. We chose the overnight charter, and had the most magical 24hrs, with the kindest captains. The boat is by far one of the most well designed, beautiful boats we have EVER stepped foot on. We simply can’t say enough about the boat itself and the wonderful details that make it feel a step above the rest. It’s cozy, mod, but charming as well. The captains made our trip as well, they were knowledgeable, professional, but also made us feel right at home. I could go on, but it is safe to say we will absolutely be booking more charters with Serafina. She’s a one-of-a-kind PNW experience! If you’re thinking about booking, go for it! The most amazing 3 hours I've spent on the Puget Sound. Initially I was going to propose on Serafina but due to bad weather, we ended up rescheduling for a post-proposal sailing experience and photo session. Matt was a wonderful host and captain. He was extremely helpful with planning and sharing information about the weather and how the boat works and what to look forward to throughout the sailing experience. My fiancé and I had a wonderful time. It was as if we were hanging out with friends. Three hours went by so fast and the views were insanely beautiful.

We booked Serafina for a photo shoot for fenders, as she’s an incredible beauty and oh so photogenic. It was a delight to work with owner Matt-he was very responsive, flexible and accommodating, which was so important for a weather-dependent outdoor shoot. Him and his crew rocked it during the shoot and we got so many incredible photos with the Seattle skyline and Mt Rainier in the background. The Pacific Northwest is a region in western North America bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and, loosely, by the Rocky Mountains on the east. Though no universally agreed upon boundary exists, a common conception includes the U.S. states of Oregon, Washington, and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Broader conceptions reach north into Alaska and Yukon, south into the coastal and mountainous regions of Northern California, and east into Idaho and western Montana, and western Wyoming to the Continental Divide. Narrower conceptions may be limited to the Northwestern U.S. or to the coastal areas west of the Cascade and Coast mountains.  The Northwest Coast is the coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest and the Northwest Plateau (also commonly known as "The Interior" in British Columbia and the Inland Empire in the United States) is the inland regions. A yacht charter vacation in this region usually includes the areas surrounding the Puget Sound, the second largest estuary in the USA with over 2300 miles of coastline and the San Juan Islands. 

Starting at South Lake Union in the heart of Seattle, charters usually cruise Lake Union and through the Montlake Cut, while bridges open for our tall masts. Then sail wherever the winds take you on Lake Washington until returning to Seattle's skyline framed by snow covered mountains.

Montlake Cut:  The Montlake Cut is the easternmost section of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which passes through the city of Seattle, linking Lake Washington to Puget Sound. It is approximately 2,500 feet (760 m) long and 350 feet (110 m) wide. The center channel is 100 feet (30 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep. The path along the cut was designated a National Recreation Trail as Montlake Cut National Waterside in 1971.[1]

The Cut provides a connection between Union Bay, part of Lake Washington, to the east and Portage Bay, an arm of Lake Union, to the west. It is spanned by the Montlake Bridge, a bascule drawbridge carrying Montlake Boulevard (State Route 513). Most of the land on the north shore of the Cut is occupied by the University of Washington, its medical school to the west and its stadium parking lot to the east; residences and a recreational trail occupy the south bank, which is part of the Montlake neighborhood. It is the site of the annual Windermere Cup crew regatta and the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day Boat Parade, both of which take place on the first Saturday in May. Puget Sound Boat Rental:  The Puget Sound region is home to the majority of Washington State citizens who live in the bustling cities and suburbs that extend north to south from Stanwood to Olympia. Most Puget Sound communities lie on either side of the north-south Interstate 5 corridor that serves as the major traffic thoroughfare of the state.

Puget Sound itself is a body of water lying east of Admiralty Inlet, through which ocean waters reach inland some 50 miles from the Pacific Coast to provide all-weather ports for ocean-going ships at Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia. The waterway is a complex and intricate system of channels, inlets, estuaries, embayments and islands.

Ballard Locks:   Tourists and locals enjoy watching the parade of yachts, sailboats, motorboats, barges and tugs passing through as the locks' water levels are adjusted to allow for safe passage between the salt water and the fresh water of the ship canal. Tillicum Village:  Tillicum Village is a Puget Sound area visitor attraction located on Blake Island just off the shore of Seattle, WA. It is believed that this attraction dates to the time period immediately preceding the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Madison Park:  Madison Park is a neighborhood in east central Seattle, Washington, USA, named after the city park at the foot of E. Madison Street on the Lake Washington shore Estates on Mercer Island:  Mercer Island Estates is the largest South End neighborhood located just south of the QFC shopping center and Mercer Island Country Club. This planned community was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and includes homes in a variety of styles, including mid-century modern, traditional, and Northwest contemporary. With wide streets and plenty of cul-de-sacs, this neighborhood is popular with families, who also enjoy Wildwood Park and its proximity to the nearby South End shopping center.

Fremont Cut:  The Fremont Cut is a body of water that forms part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, which passes through the U.S. city of Seattle and links Lake Washington to Puget Sound. The Fremont Cut connects Lake Union to the east with Salmon Bay to the west. It is 5,800 feet (1,800 m) long and 270 feet (82 m) wide. The center channel is 100 feet (30 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep.

The Fremont Cut is spanned by the Fremont Bridge, a bascule drawbridge that connects the neighborhoods of Fremont and Queen Anne via Fremont Avenue North. A campus of Adobe Systems and the headquarters for Tableau Software are located at the north-eastern quadrant of this intersection of bridge and canal, and an office of Google is located on the north-western quadrant. Meydenbauer Bay in Bellevue:  The Bellevue Marina lies between the foot of 99th Avenue Northeast and 100th Avenue Southeast on the south side of downtown Bellevue. Depending upon the pier, the marina may be accessed from either street. From Interstate 405, take the NE 8th Street exit west. Turn left on Bellevue Way Southeast. Turn right on Main Street and proceed until reaching either the 100th Avenue Southeast or 99th Avenue Northeast intersections (Please note that Main Street turns into Lake Washington Boulevard Northeast at the 100th Avenue Southeast intersection.) Estate with Full T-Rex skeleton inside: Nathan Myhrvold became fascinated with dinosaurs and visited the filming of the “Jurassic Park” sequel in 1996 and met the film’s consultant and world-leading paleontologist, Jack Horner. Horner convinced Nathan to use some of his Microsoft multimillions to fund a dinosaur bone digging foundation. His foundation has recovered more tyrannosaurus rex skeletons than the total previously found by everyone else. He has given most of them to museums including the Smithsonian. In-side the big rounded windows of his living room he has one of the t-rex skeletons he helped dig up.

Bill Gates House: Originally purchasing the lakefront property for $2 million in 1988, Gates has done everything in his power to ensure his dream home doesn't have a negative impact on the environment. Built into a hill as part of its earth-sheltered design, Gates was concerned about potential runoff from the walls of the massive estate. To combat the problem, he collaborated with the two architectural firms who designed the home to create an artificial stream on the property to catch the runoff. And, in true Gates fashion, he took the design up a notch and has the stream stocked with salmon and trout giving even the wildlife a fisheye view of the most expensive home in America.

Fisherman's Terminal –  Fishermen's Terminal is a dock for Seattle, Washington's commercial fishing fleet, on Salmon Bay in the Interbay neighborhood, east of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and immediately west of the Ballard Bridge.

Hunts Point & City of Kirkland:   Incorporated in 1955, the Town of Hunts Point is located on the eastern shore of Lake Washington just north of the SR520 bridge. Once a camping ground for the Sammamish Indian tribe, this residential community of single-family residences is home to just under 500 residents. Hunts Point is one of the smallest municipalities in Western Washington, yet its bucolic feel and proximity to Seattle and the Eastside help make it a highly desirable place to live. Seattle Skyline: From 1903 to 1904, Seattle's tallest building and first steel-framed skyscraper is constructed. The Alaska Building, located at the southeast corner of 2nd Avenue and Cherry Street, rises 14 stories

This Spring we have seen a large number of luxury yachts launched on time for the Mediterranean  yachting season. However, the 74m SHERPA is a rather different boat, as she was designed as a luxury yacht support vessel, and as per all Feadship -built vessels, she is completely unique and custom designed, down to the very last detail.

Due to her height, SHERPA was launched via slipway in order for the yard to be able to progress with her construction as it was no longer possible to continue inside the construction hall. She is due for an imposing mast, air/exhaust funnels and cranes to be added to the deck. The construction is still well underway and she is due to be christened and delivered later in 2018.

SHERPA is being built for an experienced yacht owner and Feadship’s repeat client. Perhaps one of the most distinctive features of the yacht is her unfaired hull finish, leaving the plate work and welding exposed. This design feature is in line with the sturdy, expedition yacht appearance. Her industrial look is contrasted and at the same time complimented by high-end details, such as teak, polished stainless steel and dressed aluminium and steel elements.

The naval architecture was created by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects in collaboration with RWD  for exterior and interior design, allowing the yacht to carry plenty of equipment, transportation and logistics options on board, including two huge boom cranes which will soon be installed. The cranes will extend to 12m and 20m respectively and will be capable of hoisting items from port and starboard, on and off the helicopter deck, and to and from the platforms of the multipurpose garage below. There is a huge hull door to starboard which, once folded down, turns into a fantastic beach club with a flush floor, while the cargo bay to port rotates upward. The stern bulwark also rotates and converts into a swimming platform to the beach club. These features might seem simple, however, involve a massive amount of engineering and technical expertise as well as great craftsmanship to execute.

The spacious lounge and dining area, as well as a bar/pantry, are located below the helicopter deck, while the observatory lounge and bridge deck are situated in the forward area of the vessel. The accommodation, including the owner suite, two VIP suites and four guest suites are all located on the main deck. SHERPA is being created with well-appointed and laid out interiors in order to offer versatility during long voyages to different parts of the world. More to come …

Pacific Shadow

82' yacht charter in the pacific northwest.

Pacific Shadow , a luxury yacht built in 1982, has been extensively retrofitted for today’s cruising needs. Professionally decorated and lovingly maintained, she is the perfect yacht for up to 4 couples, large groups or families to cruise in comfort in the PNW. She is built on a commercial deep-v hull with stabilizers and is extremely comfortable both at sea and at anchor. She has bright staterooms (with more hot showers than most homes!) and large, beautiful entertaining areas on both the main and top decks. On drizzly Northwest days, everyone in your group can find a covered, enclosed, quiet area to read, play cards or make cocktails. When the clouds part, there are plenty of areas to enjoy the warm sunshine or be in the shade while still enjoying the breeze.  Speaking of weather, zoned heating and air conditioning throughout the main and stateroom levels. Boating in the Pacific Northwest

The San Juan Islands of Washington and Gulf Islands of British Columbia provide some of the most beautiful boating in the world.  The beautiful water, soaring mountains and abundant wildlife make this an area unparalleled for boat charter.  Fishing, crabbing, kayaking, biking, wine tasting, hiking - if you love to do it, it can probably be found in the waters and communities of these island paradises.  You can visit the islands by ferry, but in your own yacht, you will have a private oasis from which to experience this once in a lifetime vacation. 

If you are more adventurous, take her out for a couple of weeks or more and venture north to the Princess Louisa Inlet or the Queen Charlotte Islands of BC.  Or take the whole summer and head to Alaska!

The Details

Pacific Shadow is available for crewed charter.  Perfect for 4 couples or 2 -3 families, she sleeps 11 guest comfortably.  She has 5 staterooms (4 guest and 1 for the crew) all with ensuite heads (bathrooms for you landlubbers) and a day head (or powder room) on the main level.  

She also includes a 13' RIB dinghy with a chart plotter/fish finder, crab rings and fishing gear.  Back on board, there are two bars where you can drown your sorrows if you don't catch anything.  

Charter is handled through the Northwest's premier chartering company.  They can arrange everything from crew to food.
