4 bodies found inside the Bayesian, Mike Lynch family yacht, amid search

Four bodies were recovered inside the Bayesian superyacht on Wednesday, more than two days after it sank off the coast of Italy , setting off an exhaustive search for six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .

Two of the bodies discovered earlier on Wednesday were brought to shore. One body recovered was a heavily built man, Reuters reported.

Six of the ship's 22 passengers, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, went missing after the yacht plunged under the water just before 5 a.m. on Monday as a storm swept across the area. Americans are among the missing, officials have said.

The U.K.-registered yacht belonged to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was also on board and was rescued. The tech tycoon was recently acquitted on fraud charges after a year under house arrest.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook, was found dead on Monday, according to the coast guard.

The rescue mission saw a diving team, helicopters and multiple coast guard ships deployed to search the water. Fifteen people were pulled from the water on Monday, and eight were hospitalized in stable condition.

A 'black swan event'? Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank

An investigation opened by local prosecutors into the cause of the disaster is ongoing. Experts have pointed to a water spout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the heavy weight of ship's mast, one of the largest in the world.

The 184-feet-long ship was made by Italian ship manufacturer Perini in 2008.

Lynch set off on the cruise late last month to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. that marked a decade of legal challenges, the Associated Press reported .

One of his lawyers and a character witness for Lynch during the trial were also on board and vanished when the boat went down. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the four people found.

Here are the passengers who were declared missing.

Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch

Mike Lynch, 59, is co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and founder of venture capital fund Invoke Capital. 

Sometimes known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was slapped with charges after HP said it had uncovered deceit and a major accounting scandal within the firm. He spent a year on house arrest after being extradited from the UK.

In early June, at the end of a 12-week trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was also cleared on a charge of securities fraud later that month.

Lynch and Bacares have two daughters and six dogs, all named after engineering parts, according to the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a profile of Lynch from last month.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was also among the missing. She was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times. 

Hannah is the younger of Mike Lynch’s two daughters, the Times reported . Mike Lynch told the outlet that his daughters had grown up with their father being publicly accused of fraud. 

Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox, among other companies. Bloomer acted as a character witness on Lynch’s behalf during his fraud trial. 

Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain told Reuters in a statement that the firm was deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected. 

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told BBC that he is processing the news and the family is waiting to hear updates.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC. “We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed.”

Jonathan Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a psychotherapist of nearly three decades and former teacher. She specializes in anxiety and stress. She studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge.

Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo

A lawyer with Clifford Chance, Chris Morvillo was among the team that represented Mike Lynch during his trial. Morvillo is an American citizen. 

He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, and he worked on the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 

Morvillo was a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and Villanova University. 

Neda Morvillo, his wife, owns a hand-crafted jewelry company under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri. The company’s website said she has been designing and making jewelry for over 20 years.

In a post on LinkedIn after the conclusion of Lynch’s trial, Chris Morvillo acknowledged his family for their support during the case. 

“And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.  None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. 

And they all lived happily ever after…."

Yacht-Drama vor Sizilien: „Fahrlässigkeit“ – Kachelmann zieht harten Vergleich

Was führte zum Yacht-Drama vor Sizilien? Wetterprofi Kachelmann kritisiert, die „Bayesian“-Crew hätte sich auf das Unwetter in Italien vorbereiten müssen.

Palermo – „Wir haben es nicht kommen sehen“, das ist bislang die einzige Aussage von „Bayesian“-Kapitän James Catfield. Nach dem tragischen Yacht-Unfall in Sizilien türmen sich nun die Fragen. Wie konnte das Segelschiff so unerwartet von einem Tornado getroffen werden? Auch unklar, warum das Schiff während des Unwetters eine halbe Seemeile vor der Küste Italiens vor Anker lag.

Yacht „Bayesian“ ankerte bei Unwetter vor Sizilien – Kachelmann überzeugt: „Niemand wurde überrascht“

Das Video einer Überwachungskamera zeigt, wie die „Bayesian“ beim Sturm in weniger als zwei Minuten sank. „Es ging alles sehr schnell“, erinnert sich auch der deutsche Kapitän Karsten Börner, der mit der „Sir Robert Baden Powell“ in unmittelbarer Nähe war und die 15 Überlebenden vor dem Ertrinken rettete .

Wurden die Crew und Passagiere der Luxusyacht im Schlaf vom Unwetter überrascht? Der Wetterexperte Jörg Kachelmann kann sich mit dieser Erklärung nicht anfreunden. „Nein, es hat natürlich niemand geschlafen und nein, nichts kam ‚überraschend‘“, schreibt der Meteorologe auf X (Twitter).

„Fahrlässigkeit“: Kachelmann vergleicht Yacht-Unglück in Italien mit Kreuzfahrt-Katastrophe der Costa Concordia

Kachelmann kann nicht nachvollziehen, warum die „Bayesian“ nicht auf das Unwetter vorbereitet war. „Alle Computermodelle haben am Sonntag (18. August, d.R.) starke Gewitter für das Umfeld von Porticello vorhergesagt“, erklärt er und fügt hinzu: „Das Ausmaß von Fahrlässigkeit, dass das Schiff dort war, hat schettinske Dimensionen.“

Mit „schettinske Dimensionen“ bezieht sich Kachelmann offensichtlich auf Francesco Schettino, den Kapitän, der 2012 für das Unglück der Costa Concordia verantwortlich gemacht wurde. Schettino wurde als „Kapitän Feigling“ bekannt, weil er das Kreuzfahrtschiff als einer der Ersten verließ, nachdem es unter seiner Führung gegen einen Felsen gefahren war. Bei dem Unglück kamen 32 Menschen ums Leben und Schettino wurde zu 16 Jahren Haft verurteilt.

Gewitter brachen um 2.45 Uhr vor Sizilien los: Hätte die Crew der „Bayesian“ reagieren müssen?

Selbst wenn die Crew sich „geweigert“ hätte, die Wettervorhersagen zu beachten, hätte sie laut Kachelmann lange vor dem Unwetter aufwachen müssen. Die ersten Gewitter brachen laut Wetterdaten gegen 2.45 Uhr vor Palermo aus, die Yacht sank gegen 4 Uhr. „Noch genug Zeit, alles für den Super-GAU bereits zu machen, den es zweifellos geben wird“, so der Meteorologe.

Einige Medien aus Italien vermuten, die „Bayesian“ hätte ihre Anker nicht rechtzeitig lösen können, was bei Unwetter katastrophale Folgen haben kann. Auch die Nähe zur Küste war problematisch. „Auf dem offenen Meer kann ein Schiff extreme Wettersituationen grundsätzlich besser abwettern als dicht unter Land, wo im flacheren Wasser Wellen eher brechen und das Schiff gefährden“, erklärt Bootsbauer Jan Maas der FAZ . Tiefsee-Experte Philippe Epelbaum schildert bei IPPEN.MEDIA , dass eine große Welle, die zu viel Wasser an Bord spülte, zum schnellen Untergang der „Bayesian“ geführt haben könnte.

Was führte zum Bootsunglück vor Sizilien? Kachelmann hofft auf Ermittlungen zu fahrlässiger Tötung

Kachelmann sieht es offenbar nicht ausreichend, von einem Unwetter-Unglück vor Sizilien zu sprechen. Er mahnt: „Es ist auf einen Staatsanwalt zu hoffen, der sich mit fahrlässiger Tötung auskennt und hilft, dass sowas nicht mehr wieder passiert. Es hätte nie passieren dürfen.“ Beim Untergang der Luxusyacht kam mindestens ein Mann ums Leben, sechs Personen werden noch vermisst, darunter der britische Tech-Milliardär Mike Lynch . (moe)

Divers searching for the last person missing after a superyacht sank off Sicily found a body Friday, presumed to be the teenage daughter of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who also perished. 

The discovery, confirmed to AFP by the Italian coastguard, brings to seven the final death toll in the sinking of the "Bayesian", which went down off the Italian island before dawn on Monday. 

The bodies of Lynch, a celebrated tech entrepreneur and investor, and four other passengers were found on Wednesday and Thursday, with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah the only one still missing. 

Emergency services had found the body of another man, believed to be the yacht's chef, a few hours after it sank in a sudden storm. 

Lynch had invited friends and family onto the sailing boat to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case. 

But as the 56-metre (185-feet) British-flagged yacht was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo, it was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado. 

It sank within minutes. 

Italian authorities launched what they called a "delicate" search operation involving specialist divers, boats from several emergency services and helicopters.

Fifteen people had been rescued from the ship, including Lynch's wife, who is believed to have been waiting in a Sicily hotel for news of her husband and daughter. 

The 18-year-old Hannah had just finished her end of school exams and had a place to study English literature at Oxford University, according to UK media reports. 

Friends of the teenager told The Times newspaper that she was kind and clever, as well as a staunch feminist.

The bodies of Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were recovered on Wednesday.  

Morvillo's firm Clifford Chance paid tribute to the lawyer and his wife, saying all were "heartbroken at the tragic passing... and still coming to terms with this terrible loss".

The Bloomer family described their "unimaginable grief", saying Jonathan and Judy had been together for five decades. 

"Our only comfort is that they are still together now," the family said.

The Lynch family has yet to comment publicly.

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and so quickly, when other boats nearby were unaffected. 

On Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built Bayesian in 2008.

He told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

"Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap," he said.

Lynch, 59, was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The Bayesian, owned by his family, boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

Raising it would likely cost some 15 million euros and take "six to eight weeks", according to the salvage engineer who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which sank off Italy in 2012.

To recover the yacht, the mast could be removed on the seabed but the boat would be lifted up whole using a giant crane and a team of 40 specialist divers, South African engineer Nick Sloane told the Repubblica daily.
