The Hanover 377 is a Brazilian-built supersize bowrider that falls in the middle of the company’s 12-model lineup, ranging from 25 to 52 feet length overall. The 377 has a black fiberglass hardtop with forward-leaning supports that accent a sleek profile, giving the boat the impression of being in motion even when it’s static. Hull sides slashed in black conceal the many windows that account for the bright interior belowdecks. The outside amenities for entertaining include twin L-shaped lounges in the cockpit and three lounge seats with adjustable backrests in what Hanover calls the bow “solarium.”

Also aft are a Kenyon grill, a fridge, a sink and twin bar stools. At the helm, there’s a flat-black dash (read no reflections) with controls for the MerCruiser shifters and Lenco trim tabs, the optional joystick and two 11-inch Raymarine displays. The 377’s twin bucket seats are nicely upholstered and fully adjustable.

Inside the cabin are a few surprises for a boat this size, including 6-foot-5-inch headroom and a lounge forward that converts to a queen berth. There is also a galley with a microwave, an induction cooktop, a fridge and stowage. The enclosed head has a 27-by-36-inch stall shower with teak seating and 6-foot-2-inch headroom. Aft, the guest stateroom has a wider-than-queen berth (65 inches) and 9-foot headroom.

Underway, the Hanover 377 is fast, fun and well-mannered. With the upgraded 350 hp MerCruiser 6.2MPIs paired to Bravo Three drives, the boat topped out above 37 knots, while its handling felt like a boat half its size. There was zero cavitation in spite of cranking the wheel hard into turns. At a cruise speed of 20 knots, the 377 achieved nearly 1 nautical mile per gallon.

Owners can also choose 350 hp and 400 hp diesel-engine options from MerCruiser and Volvo Penta, respectively.

Solidly built from the hand-laid fiberglass hull to the through-bolted rails, and finished in fine fabrics with a choice of trims and colors, the Hanover 377 is a delight-to-drive express cruiser from the dock to the sea and back.

How it Started

Hanover Yachts launched in 1984. It started off as a fiberglass manufacturer. By 1994, it switched to boatbuilding. Today, there are 12 models ranging from 25 to 52 feet long.

Boat Test: 2023 Hanover 377

If you remember “The Girl from Ipanema” (RIP, Astrud Gilberto), then you’ll know the feeling I had when I first saw the Hanover 377.

“When she passes, each one she passes goes aaaahh .”

This new Brazilian beauty is 37-ish feet of delights, from the big cockpit that easily held nine of us on our test hop to the cabin as bright and airy as the beach at Copacabana.

Stylish and sophisticated, this Latin beauty is a big bowrider marked by a rakish black hardtop with an opening sunroof and black hull slashes, which hide the windows that keep the cabin bright.

Though the boat is clearly intended for day entertaining with the option to overnight in surprisingly luxurious comfort, one pervading question among all those who toured her at recent boat shows was: “How can it be so inexpensive?” The base price is $385,000, but that includes a long list of standard equipment—from MerCruiser power to Raymarine electronics to a 6 kW Onan genset—so there are no corners cut.

Interior and Accessories

Putting on my marine surveyor hat, I poked through the bilges (spotless and gelcoated) and into lockers (beautifully finished), and then scratched my head. I wasn’t surprised to find that the 377 meets European CE Class B requirements for yachts up to 200 miles offshore in winds to 40 knots and seas to 13 feet. The hull also carries a five-year warranty.

The answer is that Brazil has low labor costs, but that’s only the beginning; the country also has huge resources for everything from wood to fiberglass resin to the stainless steel used on handrails. The bottom line is the Hanover 377 may be low-priced, but there is nothing cheap about it. Take the twin bucket seats, where I planted my rear at the helm. They were well-padded with flip-up bolsters, impeccably upholstered, fully ­adjustable and comfy—very upscale.

Brace yourself because there is a seemingly endless variety of upholstery options (leather and vinyl), exterior finishes (15 colors), interior colors (eight) and flooring options, which include the synthetic teak on our test boat. Our test boat had oak cabin floors and bulkheads, with teak on the cockpit sole. 

The cockpit’s L-shaped settees face each other, while the outdoor galley (with a Kenyon grill, fridge and sink) on the transom takes advantage of the wide platform and the fold-down starboard side, which creates a beach and has room for partying at the sandbar.

The skipper gets a matte-black dash with a pair of Raymarine 11-inch monitors, MerCruiser (or Volvo Penta) shifters, the optional joystick, Lenco tabs and the aforementioned seats. A deep walkway (safe for kids) to port leads forward to what Hanover calls the “solarium” with triple lounges that feature adjustable backs atop the cabin.

A second delight in this South American import is the cabin, which is far larger than I expected, starting with 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom, which is unlike the usual cave on many day trippers. A wraparound settee forward converts into a queen berth, and the enclosed head features a separate stall shower (27-by-36 inches) with a teak seat and Lucite door. The aft cabin, tucked under the cockpit, has a wider-than-queen berth (5 feet, 5 inches) and a startling 9 feet of headroom under the helm for pulling on your britches. The cabin also has a mini galley with a microwave, one-burner induction cooktop, fridge, and stowage for morning coffee without tiptoeing out to the cockpit galley.

But the fun really starts when you punch the ignition to power up. Our test boat had the ­upgraded MerCruiser 6.2 MPFI inboard gas engines of 350 hp linked to Bravo 3 dual-prop contra-­rotating sterndrives. First, the 377 comes up flat and fast without needing to nurse the trim tabs to maintain forward visibility. Once on plane, the 377 handles like a much ­smaller boat.

Thrown into a hard-over turn at near top speed, it banks and spins with no cavitation, thanks to the solid bite of the Bravo 3 sterndrives. Some boats encourage you to get up to top speed and then just blast along. This is not one. If you ever harbored the notion of doing doughnuts just for the heck of it, the 377 will satisfy your urges.

Time to plane was a smidge over 6 seconds. It was also quiet-running, hitting just 84 dB(A) on our sound meter at wide-open throttle; harbor speed was a whispery 69 dB(A).

Power choices start with the standard MerCruiser 300 hp, and you can opt for the 350 hp Merc on our test boat or choose either 380 hp or 400 hp Volvo D6 diesels. An outboard version of the 377 is also available. Hanover has allocated room in the engine room for the optional Quick X10 gyro. 

If you’re shopping, there’s not much similar at this price. Sea Ray’s Sundancer 370 ($878,898 base) is about the same size but 5,000 pounds heavier, with a similar layout and better finish. 

This Brazilian import is priced at entry level but punches far above its weight in quality and amenities. 

As the song says, “When she walks, she’s like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gentle.”

The 400-foot-long Kismet embarks on her maiden voyage in the Med

When it comes to exclusive enclaves, it’s pretty hard to compete with Monaco. The world’s elite flock to the tiny principality on the French Rivera for its sunny weather, sophisticated hotels and casinos, spectacular shopping and other financial reasons. They love to drive their fast cars down the famous roads leading into the city, and they love the speed and power of the legendary Monaco Grand Prix, too.

But as for the absolute pinnacle of luxury, it doesn’t get much better than owning a superyacht. And for the select few who happen to be shopping for a superyacht, there’s one place to see nearly all of the best, and biggest, and most technologically advanced yachts that money can buy (in addition to the tenders, and limousines, and private submarines, and luxury cars that go along with a superyacht) in one place: The Monaco Yacht Show , which starts next week.

Renaissance is massive

During the show, the docks of Monaco’s famous port are always filled with numerous yachts longer than 250 feet. But this year, the largest superyacht in the show is 400 feet long! And lots of superyachts in the 300-foot-long range will be there, too.

So, if you are lucky enough to be in Monaco later this month, I’ll see you there. But if you not, here’s a sneak peek at the five largest yachts that will be on display.

Kismet underway

What can I say about the 400-foot-long Kismet (which was built by Lürssen , features an exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard and an interior design by Reymond Langton Design and is available for charter with Cecil Wright ) that can help you understand just how big a 400-foot-long superyacht is? How about, since it measures 40 feet longer than an American football field (including the end zones), it’s safe to say that Kismet would only just barely fit inside the Jacksonville Jaguars EverBank Stadium. And that’s only if it could somehow be lowered from the top with a crane!

But since these photos and that explanation can’t really convey just how big Shaid Kahn ’s (the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars) new 400-foot-long superyacht is...The only way you’ll really be able to understand just how big the Jacksonville Jaguars owner’s new yacht is to see it for yourself in Monaco next week. It’s going to be largest yacht at the show and has raised the bar on what’s possible when it comes to designing, building, owning and chartering the largest yachts in the world.

And since Kismet has already spent her first season in the Mediterranean and is available for charter through Cecil Wright (instead of being hidden away for a private owner like many yachts in this size range are), you, too, could experience what it’s like to live the superyacht life aboard one of the largest and most opulent vessels in the world.

So, if you looking for a charter yacht that costs roughly $3 million per week, the Monaco Yacht Show will be the place where you can see just how opulent Kismet (and theses other superyachts too) for yourself.

‘Renaissance’

The 367-foot-long, 7,200-gross ton, Bannenberg & Rowell -designed Renaissance is um, a “really big superyacht.” But what intrigues me the most is that unlike most superyachts that can only accommodate 12 guests per charter, Renaissance has been designed to swaddle 36 guests in superyacht luxury.

As you’d imagine, this yacht has it all. Open-air dining on five decks and a dining room with 18-foot-tall ceilings on the main deck. A sushi bar. A pizza oven by the huge pool. And of course, the requisite DJ stations when it’s time to party. There’s also a massive cinema that has seating 19 guests on lower deck—the perfect place to just Netflix-n-chill.

The all-new exterior lines of Oceanco H3

I’ve seen lots of superyacht designs come to life thanks to the hard work, dedication, perseverance and love that the large fraternity of superyacht designers, builders, artists and countless others pour into every spectacular new yacht that gets launched.

But I must admit, after seeing the 344-foot-long Oceanco -built (and rebuilt) H3 (first launched in 2000) emerge after an intensive 3-year-rebuild, I’m at a loss for words. I’m in awe, actually. Because after spending time at Oceanco with the project team and the owner's representative , I understand why this project is way more than just a refit.

It’s been transformed into a brand-new yacht with every modern comfort, but also retains its…soul.

The sustainability impact of this project is also pretty awe-inspiring to me, too. According to Oceanco’s team of engineers, simply using an existing hull instead of building an brand-new one resulted in a 50% reduction of carbon emissions for the build. And since H3 has been repowered with smaller yet much more efficient engines (and her top speed has been reduced slightly), the yacht burns much less fuel than she previously did as well. Delivery time was reduced by 25% as well, and hopefully we see more projects take this approach in the future.
