Oceanco's 127 metre sailing yacht known as Y721 , rumoured to be Jeff Bezos's in-build superyacht, emerged from the shed for the first time this week. BOAT rounds up the best pictures of the project, which will become the largest sailing yacht in the world when delivered in 2022.

Emerging from the shed

The sailing yacht was glimpsed for the very first time earlier this month after rolling out of the sheds at Oceanco's Zwijndrecht shipyard. The record-breaking black-hulled superyacht is set to feature three masts and a bowsprit.

The scale of the project can be seen in this image against the shipyard workers watching the yacht emerge. While the designers of the project remain a secret, it is known that the yacht is built from aluminium and steel.

Prior to being revealed in October, the hull of the yacht was built in pieces at Oceanco's Zwijnenburg facility before being assembled in Zwijndrecht.

The bow and superstructure of the sailing yacht are clearly seen in this image. While the sale of the yacht was first reported in 2018, no other details about the project have been released until now. The yacht will be the largest yacht ever built at Oceanco.

The striking black shine of the hull is seen from below in this image. A new book published this year appeared to confirm long-standing rumours that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the owner of this secretive 127-metre sailing yacht. An excerpt of the book, named Amazon Unbound , was published by Bloomberg and describes the superyacht as “one of the finest sailing yachts in existence,” with "several decks" and "three enormous masts."

The teak decks of the superyacht can be seen from above in this image. Amazon Unbound also reported that an accompanying support boat is also under construction, though the details of this remain unknown.

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

Bezos ran into some trouble earlier this year when it came out that the Koningshaven Bridge in the Netherlands might have to be dismantled to let Y721 Koru pass through, as the megayacht’s 229-foot masts exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance. City officials briefly agreed to disassemble the bridge but then decided against it in the face of public backlash, according to The New York Times. That negative reaction included a threat from residents to show up and pelt rotten eggs at the $500 million behemoth.

Oceanco, the company that built Y721 Koru, ultimately decided against applying for the permit that would be required for dismantling Koningshaven Bridge, and the boat was instead quietly towed to another shipyard without its mast.

Bezos’s completed yacht will be accompanied by a 246-foot-long “shadow yacht” called YS7512, Damen Yacht’s largest-ever support vessel. It will fit 45 people onboard, feature a helicopter hangar and storage for Jet Skis and other water toys and is reportedly called Abeona , according to Boat International .

We may have just gotten our first glimpse at Jeff Bezos' new superyacht. 

New photos and videos surfaced over the weekend of a 417-foot yacht rolling out of a shipyard in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands. According to yachting publication Boat International , the vessel is known only as Y721 and is being built by Oceanco, a Dutch shipbuilder known for producing some of the world's largest and most luxurious ships.

The massive vessel is still unfinished, but photos published by Boat International and Daily Mail show a ship with a black hull and multiple decks. The project will be completed in 2022 and will become the largest sailing yacht in the world, Boat International reports. 

A spokesperson for Oceanco did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but the company told Boat International that it "values the privacy and confidentiality of all our clients and prospective clients and therefore does not comment on our involvement or non-involvement in specific projects."

Journalist Brad Stone was the first to report that Bezos had commissioned his own custom yacht. According to Stone's book, "Amazon Unbound," the Amazon founder commissioned a three-mast ship with several decks that's expected to be "one of the finest sailing yachts in existence." 

In addition to the ship, Bezos has reportedly commissioned a second, smaller, "support yacht" that will include its own helipad. Bezos' girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, is a helicopter pilot and Stone reported that Bezos has also taken flying lessons.

While massive yachts are often  an accessory of the mega-rich , Bezos, who is the second-richest person in the world with a fortune worth $193 billion , hasn't previously had a boat of his own. A viral photo in 2019 claimed Bezos was the owner of  a $400 million yacht known as the Flying Fox, but Amazon has denied that the ship belongs to Bezos.

Bezos does appear to be a fan of yacht travel, however. Throughout the summer of 2019 , he and Sanchez were spotted aboard multiple yachts belonging to their high-profile friends: first, entertainment mogul David Geffen's Rising Sun, and then fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg's schooner, Eos. And in February, Bezos and Sanchez were spotted aboard another yacht in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico .

The world’s largest sailing boat for the world’s second richest man is taking shape. We told you about the 127-metre yacht that Oceanco was building for Jeff Bezos: now we have the construction images of the boat commissioned by the CEO and main shareholder of Amazon, “stolen” as soon as the hull left the Dutch shipyard in Zwijndrecht.

The secrest of Jeff Bezos’ mega yacht

The yacht, for now known by her technical name of Y721, should already be delivered in 2022: once she touches the water, she will be the longest sailing yacht in the world. This record currently belongs to Sea Cloud, which is “only” 109.5 metres long (launched in 1931 under the name Hussar II). A record destined to be short-lived!

Bezos’s megayacht is also a record for Dutch company Oceanco, which specializes in building “giants of the sea” (one of the latest being the stunning 106.7-metre Black Pearl ). It has never built such a large yacht before, and it is also the largest recreational yacht built in Holland.

Classic lines and “double bow”

But let’s see the boat in detail, in its sparkling black colour, made of steel and carbon. What’s striking are the crazy sweeps of the stern and bow and the classic lines, at a time when design is increasingly moving towards vertical fore and aft.

The solution with a sort of “double bow” is strange. Mind you, this is a very different kind of double bow from the one seen on some ships and even on a 12-metre motorboat – the Canelli 39 Revolutio -, i.e. a double offset bow lying on the same axis to reduce friction and resistance to motion when the craft is travelling at low speeds and coming out of the water in a planing attitude. In the case of Bezos’ boat, the choice seems to be dictated by the desire to have a large “dolphin boat” integrated into the hull.

Three masts and Dyna Rig

We also know that the boat will have three masts, with a Dyna Rig system. The Dyna Rig was invented by Wilhelm Prölss in the 1960s. The DynaRig, which was successfully fitted to Black Pearl, works with independent rotating masts with self-supporting sail rig.

Each mast supports six spars which, unlike a conventional mast, have a preset curvature of 12%. The fifteen square sails are positioned between the spars in such a way that when they are hoisted there are no gaps between the masts, so they act as a single wing.

The sails are furled and stored in the mast, and can be hoisted in six minutes by powerful electric motors. The sails are adjusted by turning the masts. As there is no rigging, the masts and spars can be rotated to allow the boat to sail upwind. The first boat to install the Dyna Rig System was the 2006 Maltese Falcon built by the Italian boatyard Perini Navi.

30 knots under sail and 3,000 tonnes

The boat’s maximum speed under sail will be over 30 knots and under engine only 18 knots, weighing over 3,000 tonnes. There will be only 6, or at most 7, cabins, with a master suite in the bow, equivalent to a flat of at least 250 square metres. The sail area is equally monstrous, estimated at 3,500 square metres.

How do we know the boat belongs to Jeff Bezos?

A curiosity arises. Given the privacy surrounding these mega projects, how do we know that the boat is really Jeff Bezos’? In the book ‘Amazon Unbound – Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire’ by Brad Stone, the superyacht is described as ‘one of the most beautiful boats in existence’, with ‘several decks’ and ‘three huge masts’.

According to the book, a tender is also under construction. A tender that, we anticipated, will be 30 metres long and where the helicopter that cannot land on the “mother” boat can land, because the masts leave no room for a helipad.

It is also rumoured that Jeff Bezos’s ($177 billion fortune) superbank is the brainchild of the Amazion CEO’s girlfriend, 51-year-old Lauren Sanchez (TV anchor and entrepreneur), after a sailing holiday in Spain with fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg.
