Irish Sailing League 2024 Gears Up For April Start in J80s With Howth, Kinsale and Royal Cork Yacht Clubs Signed Up

kinsale yacht club april league

Kinsale Yacht Club , Howth Yacht Club and Royal Cork are the first teams to sign up for the Irish Sailing League 2024, which promises to decide who is the best sailing club in the country and then the world!'

League Sailing is Club against Club, with each club represented by a team whose members must be members of that club.

Through a series of races, the winning team can claim their club is the best sailing club in the country. The winning team then has the opportunity to represent their country at the sailing Champions League, competing against teams from the best clubs in other countries that run a league affiliated with the International Sailing League Association.

Back for 2024, we have some great news!

The first league event is not far away and will be as follows;

Ireland has been granted a spot at all the qualifying events for the Sailing Champions League this year! The main qualifying event for which Ireland can secure a potential spot is in Warnemünde, Germany, later in July this year.

League Sailing breaks down many barriers to keelboat sailing. One key barrier is that the league provides the boats to guarantee fairness and competitiveness.

The winning team from the event in Ireland in April will be guaranteed a spot at this event, giving the club and team the right to showcase their club and their own talent on the world league stage!

League sailing has been hugely popular and successful throughout Europe and North America, and it can provide many answers to questions about sailing in this country.

There are other fantastic attributes to league sailing;

Intense short sprint racing

Fast exciting boats

Small numbers of crew (4-5 crew per boat)

Opportunity for multiple divisions

Opportunity to represent Ireland Internationally

Live tracking

Pubic engagement & sponsorship opportunities

The NOR and entry for the 2024 is now available online here

With committed entries from Kinsale Yacht Club, Royal Cork Yacht Club and Howth Yacht Club, now is the time to get your club's entry in!

Conflict Over Super Yacht Release

The super yacht S/Y a having been seized by the Bay of Gibraltar has brought much interest and intrigue in the sailing world. Indeed, the fact that the shipbuilding yard released the vessel only to get it seized and arrested does raise questions.

This is also sounded in the words of the owner that have been released in public media through his representative. These words show surprise in the way the shipbuilder has acted, especially a company that has a standing and reputation like Nobiskrug. The arrest of this sailing yacht is being viewed with disappointment by the customer. Continue reading Conflict Over Super Yacht Release →

Kinsale Yacht Club Gears Up To Host 80th Dragon Gold Cup

kinsale yacht club april league

This will be the third time that Kinsale Yacht Club (KYC) has hosted the Dragon Gold Cup, the first being in 1977 and the second in 2012. The venue is hugely popular with the Dragon sailing community and many international teams are expected to compete alongside a strong Irish contingent. International Dragon Association Chairman Gérard Blanc is looking forward to returning to Kinsale, saying, “Since the last Gold Cup in Ireland in 2012 I know that many international Dragon sailors are excited to be returning to one of their favourite venues in the southwest of Ireland. Kinsale is a fantastic place to sail, and a legendary social welcome awaits you. I plan to be there and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible”.

Already confirming their intention to race are crews from some 20 nations across Australasia, Asia, North America, and Europe. In attendance will be some of the best sailors on the planet including multiple Olympic medallists, America’s Cup veterans, World, Continental, and National Champions. The regatta will also feature a Corinthian Division for all amateur crews, who will race alongside the professional teams, whilst at the same time scoring in their own ranking.

Kinsale’s open ocean race area has minimal currents, excellent sailing winds, and is backed by southern Ireland’s spectacular coastline, including the famous Old Head of Kinsale. KYC is renowned for creating international regattas of the highest quality and for its generous Irish hospitality.

The Gold Cup has always been an event aimed at fostering camaraderie amongst the teams and their friends and family. In addition to a superb social programme, which will include opening and closing ceremonies and a special 80 th Anniversary gala dinner at Actons Hotel, plus après sailing daily and other social events, Kinsale is a wonderful holiday venue for those accompanying the sailors. This part of Ireland is famed for its stunning coastline and countryside, great walking, cycling, and horse riding, superb golf courses – one of which has a spectacular view over the race area – places of historical interest, water sports and so much more. Visit www.kinsale.ie for further information about the area.

Already several companies have confirmed their sponsorship of the event including principal sponsor Astra Construction Services Ltd, a Carrigaline based residential construction company, whose Managing Director Stephen McCarthy will also provide the committee boat for the regatta. TNG Swiss Watches are signed up as the official timekeeper and will be presenting time pieces to the Gold Cup Open and Corinthian Champion helms. Guinness and Cork City Council are also onboard as sponsors, whilst Actons, The Trident and Perryville House hotels will be offering special rates for competitors which can be booked via the event website .

Heading up the organising committee is Maeve Cotter, an experienced Dragon sailor with international event management experience. “I am really looking forward to welcoming our Dragon sailing friends to our lovely harbour for the Kinsale YC Dragon Gold Cup in 2024 and to celebrating the 80 th anniversary of this historic competition.”

History of KYC

KYC WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1953

Kinsale Yacht Club (KYC) was established in 1953. The club was first located in two cottages opposite the slip at Scilly, across the harbour from the current location and the first Commodore was John H. Thuillier.

The current clubhouse was purchased in the early 1960’s; Dick Hegarty oversaw the purchase as the Club solicitor. Over the decades the Club has been extended with the most recent refurbishment in 2013.

In 1978, the Club and its members funded and built the first marina. The Marina was extended in 2003 to its current layout.

Sailing & Racing

By the mid-1950’s, there were six boats racing in the club comprising of a dragon called ‘Sleuth’, two colleens, ‘Pinkeen’ and ‘Spalpeen’, an Uffa Ace, Dick Hegarty’s cruiser ‘Bedouin’ and a jollyboat sailed by the 70-year old Commodore Brigadier General Dorman. Jeanot Petch made an exotic addition to the already varied fleet when he built a Prout catamaran in 1957.

The fleet would leave the Bulman Buoy to port or starboard according to the wind, as the Commodore did not want to gybe that far out to sea! Later a 45 gallon drum was placed upriver and used as an upwind mark until the new bridge was built in the 1970’s. All the boats at that time were kept on swing moorings in the river. The Cork Harbour Dragon Fleet, based in the Royal Munster Yacht Club in Crosshaven, now the Royal Cork Yacht Club, moved to Kinsale.

Over time, dinghy fleets of Albacores, Mirrors, Flying Fifteens, Fireballs and Enterprises developed and junior sailing instruction began. Junior sailing now encompasses Optimists, Lasers and Toppers. One design racing takes place weekly  in International Dragons and Squibs. Cruiser Classes I, II, III & White Sail also race weekly.

HOST OF VARIOUS CHAMPIONSHIPS
