Bay Race of 36 nautical miles
Race Starts off Port Melbourne, at 1030 hours AEDT on December 26 (Boxing Day) every year.
Description:
Since 1979, the Boxing Day Dash (in the new media age, we just cannot use 'Cock of the Bay' anymore, but the Rooster lives on...) race has been the annual feeder event for the fleet to get down to the bottom of the Bay for the Offshore Start on December 27. It also attracts many entrants not venturing offshore, but who still wish to be part of the grand spectacle, as it starts off Port Melbourne and the winds its way down the Bayside suburbs of St Kilda, Elwood, Brighton and Sandringham, before finishing off Blairgowrie on the Mornigton Peninsula. This is a fleet or all in start, which means over 100 boats all get underway from the one line, at the one time. The Boxing Day Dash is possibly the largest, single day, single start race in the Southern Hemisphere.

The ORCV's Melbourne to Stanley yacht race starts off Queenscliff and finishes at Stanley in Northwestern Tasmania. It is held each year on the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Please also note, that this is a qualifying race for both of the Melbourne to Hobart races, the Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race but not required for the Melbourne to Devonport race. However, some crews still choose to do Stanley as practice for Australia's oldest ocean race across Bass Strait- the Rudder Cup.

Arguably Australia’s most challenging ocean race, the 41st Melbourne to Hobart Westcoaster will start from yhe Portsea Pier on Thursday 27th December 2012 The course takes the competitors out of Port Phillip Heads, across Bass Strait then down the rugged West coast of Tasmania, around the Southernmost tip of Australia, past Maatsuyker Island, before heading up the Derwent River to the finish in Hobart. This is a race run for yachties by yachties. It presents an amazing challenge to the participants and is run with a level of spirit and camaraderie not often seen. There are no fat wallet boats here, just great sailors working hard.

1230hrs 27th December 2012 at Portsea : 2
Australia's oldest ocean race (and the world's fifth oldest), the famous Melbourne to Launceston event starts on December 27, 2012. The winner receives (albeit quite briefly) the splendiferous 60 Guinea, Rudder Cup, as pictured below.
First run in 1907 and then a few years of each decade until the 60's, when it became an annual feature, the M2L is just perfect for the busy crew who have to back in Melbourne on or around New Year's Eve. Crews looking to go and stick their nose in it (Bass Strait, that is) for the first time also use the M2L as a thorough grounding in how to cross The Paddock. This race is resplendant with its own three-race series, as well. Additionally, it places you directly into some of the most stunning scenery in Tasmania and if you're a foodie/wine buff, well the Tamar and areas nearby are just a delight. So grab the gang, the golf clubs and switch off the mobile for a little RnR, Tassie style.
