Boats are simple, craftable transportation devices in Minecraft. Instead of swimming, which can take a long time, boats are easier and faster ways to travel in water. They're great choices for long distance journeys and fishing trips. Here is a guide on how to make one.

Make a Boat in Minecraft Recipe.png

Crafting a Boat

Step 1 Gather your materials.

  • Place three Wood Planks across the bottom three slots of the Crafting grid.
  • Place one Wood Plank one slot above the bottom-left Plank.
  • Place the last Wood Plank one slot above the bottom-right Plank.
  • All other slots should remain empty.

Step 3 Craft the Boat.

Placing a Boat in Water

Step 1 Place your boat on the water.

  • A boat can also be placed on land by right clicking. It can be controlled on land but its movement will be extremely slow. They also sink into ground so you may need to get out by destroying a block beside it.
  • The boat can be placed on lava, but it will break when you try to enter it.

Step 2 Get into a boat.

  • Boats are extremely fragile, and can break easily in a crash. To prevent them from crashing, slow down before you get near an island. If a boat does get destroyed in a crash, it will drop three Wood Planks and two Sticks. If the boat is destroyed by an attack, (skeleton shoots it) it will drop a Boat.
  • You can Sprint while using the boat to move slightly faster.

Steps to Use a Boat

1. place the boat onto water.

If you want to travel on water, you need a boat in Minecraft. If you don't have a boat in your inventory, you can quickly make one with a crafting recipe for a boat .

Add the boat to your hotbar and make sure that it is the selected item in the hotbar.

Next, position your pointer (the plus sign) on the water where you want to place your boat. You need at least four blocks to place your boat. You should see the block become highlighted in your game window.

Taking Inventory: Boat

#goatsbeforeboats? Not in this article!

Ahh, a life on the ocean wave! A home on the rolling deep! Where the scatter’d waters rave, and the winds their revels keep!Β

When the stresses of land-life get too much - the constant grind of mining, collecting resources, smelting them, and filing them into a series of carefully-sorted chests ( 'Ignore Duncan, kids! Minecraft is great! Buy ten more copies!' - panicking marketing team ) - the best medicine is our item of the week. Craft up a boat, grab a few supplies and your favourite pig, and set sail for shores anew.

minecraft sailboats

Boats were added to Minecraft alongside cacti in Alpha version 1.0.6, way back in 2010. They’re made with five planks arranged around the bottom of a crafting grid, plus a spade if you’re playing on Bedrock edition. Once you’re holding your finished boat, all you need to do to deploy it is to hit the use item button when facing some water. Splash!

Once it’s bobbing about, ready to go, a second tap of the use button will sit you inside. You can then use the normal movement controls to pootle around to your heart’s content - much faster than walking. When you reach your destination you can get out again by hitting β€œsneak”, and retrieve the boat by attacking it until it drops. Take THAT you lousy boat! That’ll teach you to be a convenient and wistful form of oceanic transport!

One thing worth knowing is that using a boat doesn’t deplete your hunger meter. This makes it a very handy way to travel long distances, especially if you don’t have any food handy. If you know you’re never going to use the boat again, you can also use it as fuel in a furnace, or sell it to a fisherman villager.

Humans have been building and using boats since prehistoric times. The earliest mariners that we have evidence of lived between 800,000 and 900,000 years ago on the islands of what is now Indonesia. Carved stone tools, made of non-local materials, have been found on the island of Flores - which was separated at the time from other populated islands by a 11.4-mile-wide strait.

The earliest actual boat that archaeologists have found is the Pesse Canoe - crafted from a hollowed-out tree trunk in what is now the Netherlands, about 8,000 years ago. Ancient civilizations around the Mediterranean made wide use of boats for trade and exploration.

Today, human civilization is totally reliant on boats - well, ships. Global distribution networks use cargo ships to transport everything from raw materials and food to chemicals and manufactured products. Naval power is vital to the militaries of coastal countries, and their fishing fleets are vital for their economies.

So next time you’re planning a long journey of exploration in Minecraft, take a boat with you! Just watch out for lily pads, or you’ll be treading water faster than you can say β€œwell that was a titanic success”.

Tutorials/Water-powered boat transportation

Water-powered boat transportation is a flexible and reasonably easy way to transport mobs and villagers along arbitrary paths (even uphill‌ [ BE only ] ) using only the power of flowing water, without the need for any tools more exotic than a bucket and pickaxe, and needing only three common materials (water, buttons‌ [ BE only ] or signs, and common building blocks). No rowing, rails, minecarts, redstone gadgets, or bubble columns are needed, just a boat and water. With proper water management, one can construct flowing moats around arbitrary areas in which a boat can circle endlessly. The boat can even change elevation up or down using only the power of water flow.

  • 1.1 Extending a straight channel
  • 1.2 Turning a corner
  • 1.3 Shifting to one side
  • 1.4 Example: Endlessly circling moat
  • 2.1 Basic up-step
  • 2.2 How it works
  • 2.3 Practical construction

Water management [ ]

The illustrations in this article control water using buttons. You can use either buttons or signs in Bedrock Edition, but you must use signs in Java Edition . Buttons require less wood to craft, and are easier to identify in the illustrations.

Signs or buttons are used to block the water at the end of the flow in a channel, forming a gap between one channel and the next. The current from the end of the first channel pushes the boat into the gap, and the second channel's current must pull the boat across the gap, otherwise the boat gets stuck in the gap. The trick to pulling the boat into the next channel is to use only one water source block on each channel, right next to one of the buttons, to create a flow away from the gap.

To make channels wide enough to transport a boat, and remain on a level surface without changing elevation (elevation changes are described later), the water flow must be managed so that the channel can turn a corner, or keep moving in the same direction. The schematics below illustrate a method of creating a corner turn, and methods of extending travel in one direction by shifting the flow over a bit when the water runs out from the water source block.

The flow direction is often diagonal in any implementation of a closed-loop flowing moat. This is fine. The important thing is to have one flowing region push the boat into the gap, and the next flowing region pull the boat out of the gap.

As the boat crosses the gap, it appears submerged briefly under the next flow until it clears the gap, after which it floats up. This is not a problem; the boat does not capsize. However, in Java Edition , it is a good idea avoid exceeding 4 blocks taxicab distance between water sources to avoid submerging the boat.

Extending a straight channel [ ]

Water flows only so far before it dies out. To continue the channel in the same direction, it needs to be extended. You can do this with a gap and either one or two water source blocks on the other side of the gap. Two water source blocks provide a flow straight down the channel, which moves the boat faster. These transitions can be stacked indefinitely.

Turning a corner [ ]

A corner involves creating a gap just before or after the corner, and starting the new flow on the other side of the gap. The new flow must flow away from the gap.

In the first example, the next turn or shift must be to the right, because that is the direction of the diagonal flow.

In the second example, the source block can be on either side of the channel, depending on the direction of the next turn or shift. The water should flow diagonally to the right if the next turn is to the right, and diagonally to the left if the next turn is to the left.

In the third example, you can have another straight flow only in the same direction; you cannot have a new straight flow perpendicular to a previous straight flow, or the boat cannot be pulled across the gap. The straight flow must end with a gap across it, and if the next flow is a turn, it must have a diagonal flow to pull the boat across the gap properly. Otherwise the straight flow can be continued with another straight flow.

Shifting to one side [ ]

Often you may want to continue a flow in the same direction but shift it to one side by one or more blocks, to align the flow with something ahead. You can stack these single-block shifts, making a diagonal channel, until the water runs out, and then you must create a new gap. Just make a channel that keeps shifting to the left or right as needed.

The directional shift (not the flow) can be perpendicular to the desired direction, or diagonal. The boat's movement is slightly faster with the gentler turn into a diagonal flow.

Either the first or second designs can be adjusted easily for a two-block shift.

Example: Endlessly circling moat [ ]

The smallest endlessly circling moat that can accommodate a boat.

The smallest circling pool that can accommodate a boat has one solid block in the center and four quadrants of water flowing from one corner of each quadrant. This design requires a 7Γ—7 area, 1 layer, 4 water source blocks, and 8 buttons or signs β€” one on each side of the central block and one on the wall opposite each central sign or button.

This can be used as an AFK pool for the purpose of continually moving to avoid getting kicked off a server. The advantage over a normal AFK pool is that you don't get hungry because you're in a boat.

Remember, in Java Edition you need to use signs, not buttons. You can use either signs or buttons in Bedrock Edition.

Floating uphill [ ]

In Java Edition , the simplest way to make a boat float uphill is to use soul sand to build a bubble column elevator, although this requires a foray into The Nether or an ancient city to obtain the soul sand. The technique described in this section for floating a boat uphill doesn't work in Java Edition because boats want to sink, whereas in Bedrock Edition, boats want to float.

In Bedrock Edition, it is actually possible to cause a boat to be propelled uphill using only the power of water flow; no fancy techniques like pistons or bubble columns are required. A boat can be made to float up a slope as steep as 1 ⁄ 2 (one block elevation per two blocks horizontal distance) with careful attention to water flow management.

The concept involves a zig-zag water flow, changing diagonal direction at each step, while ensuring that all surface water is flowing, and the necessary deeper water at the step is used to buoy the boat up into the flowing water. As with the level-ground water management techniques described above, each section of water flow must push the boat across an empty space into the next flow, and the next flow must pull the boat out from the previous flow.

Basic up-step [ ]

To float a boat up a step, the construction requires blocks to form a channel with a step, four buttons (or signs), one water block, and one temporary block (such as dirt) to be removed as the final step.

In the blueprints below:

  • Stone represents the water channel.
  • The water flow direction is up in these illustrations.
  • The buttons are shown unattached in the diagrams. Each button is actually attached to the channel wall nearest to the button.
  • The incoming water is assumed to be diagonal flow up toward the temporary dirt block.

The final block to be placed is the water source block. The temporary block of dirt causes the water to flow over the step. Without the block of dirt, the water simply stops at the step. After the water is placed, destroy the block of dirt.

The incoming water in the lower channel should be upward diagonal flow toward the dirt block on the left. The water block on the left resumes the flow diagonally upward to the right.

Each successive step is a mirror image of the prior one. Here, the incoming water in the lower channel should be upward diagonal flow toward the dirt block on the right. The water block on the right resumes flow diagonally upward to the left.

Remember the dirt block shown is temporary. It must be removed after placing the water source block.

How it works [ ]

After the final dirt block is removed, the two-block-wide space in front of the step has a void space (occupied by a button) and a still-water block (where the dirt used to be). Another void space is upstream ("downhill" direction) one block diagonally from the void space at the step. Otherwise the channel is completely filled with flowing water. Because the boat is bigger than one block, it does not get stuck in either void space. The current pushes the boat diagonally into the still-water block at the bottom of the step, at which point the boat floats up into the flowing water above, and the boat continues on its way.

The boat is always floating downstream, but at each step, it runs into submerged still-water block that buoys the boat up into the next flow. In this way the boat can climb uphill.

The boat submerges while navigating the step, but mobs in the boat do not drown. The top half of a villager's head is always exposed when the boat is submerged.

Practical construction [ ]

Here is a simple procedure for constructing a water-powered uphill boat channel, using a step depth of 3 blocks for each 1 block increase in elevation. The example illustrates a channel that raises the boat in height by four steps, using only water power.

1. Create the channel steps and make walls around the channel. 2. Place dirt blocks at the bottom of each step on alternating sides.

3. Place a button behind ("downhill") and diagonally up from each dirt block and from each step. Add more wall blocks to accommodate the buttons. 4. Place a water block on the wall block diagonally up ("downhill") from each dirt block. Each wall block that gets a water block is indicated by a torch.

Black Myth: Wukong - How To Get Wind Tamer Vessel

Half-life game hits new peak player count 23 years after launch, minecraft's new breach enchantment makes a clear case for an armor rework, quick links, how to make a boat in minecraft, what can a boat be used for.

Minecraft players are placed in a vast open world with a variety of different biomes. Because of how large the world can be, players will likely need to get creative to make trips as fast as possible. Especially when they run across the enormous open oceans and lengthy rivers that the overworld in Minecraft has. In order to craft a boat in the game and make trips smoother, players can look to this guide for help.

There are a number of different reasons behind building a boat in Minecraft and, fortunately, the required materials are relatively easy to gather. In order to craft a boat, players just need 5 wooden planks as well as a wooden shovel.

RELATED: Minecraft Developer Diary Details New World Generation

The recipe for a boat in Minecraft 's Bedrock and Education editions calls for five matching wooden planks as well as a wooden shovel. In the Java edition, players just need to gather five matching wooden planks. Wooden planks can be created without a crafting table from wooden logs and to get at least 5 players just need to gather 2 logs. The shovel must be wooden and it be created with a combination of two sticks and a single wooden plank.

There are a number of different trees in Minecraft and these grow in different biomes . This means that regardless of where players end up in the overworld, a boat should be craftable. All boats share the same design but they can be crafted in six different colors. The color options are related to the wood chosen: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, or dark oak.

The main usage for a boat in Minecraft is transportation across the water. Oceans and rivers are often encountered in Minecraft and a boat is one of the quickest ways to get across. For those looking to make a quick path though, boats are quickest on ice.

Boats travel at a rate of 8 blocks per second on water, a mere 2 blocks per second on land but a wild 57 blocks per second and 72 blocks per second on regular ice and blue ice, respectively. Making a path in a player's base with blue ice ensures incredibly fast movement.

Players can also turn to boats in order to transport materials, animals, and even villagers. Because boats can carry up to two creatures at a time, players have been able to effectively 'trap' the animals and villagers they want in them and transport them back to their base. This is especially useful for exotic creatures that only live in specific biomes and for those Minecraft players who plan on breeding villagers to make trading easier.

Other, less common, usages of boats include as fuel in a furnace (they burn for 60 seconds) and as a tradeable good with master-level fishermen in villages. A boat can also be exchanged for an emerald in Minecraft .

Minecraft is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and various other platforms.

10 Cool Minecraft Dock Designs

Building a dock in Minecraft is a convenient way to extend your base into the ocean. Docks can be practical and used for catching fish or as a place for storing your boats.

There are many different shapes, sizes, and materials available when it comes to building a dock in Minecraft. The size can range from a small fishing dock to a full “town on the water” with boats. Since most docks are built with wood in real-life, wood is one of the most common building materials.

Minecraft Dock Design Tips

There are many things you can add to your dock design to make it more useful and look better. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Buildings – Small survival homes or shops can be built directly onto the water or just on the shore.
  • Fishing Spots – An area to be used specifically as a fishing dock. This could be a small square or a long walkway into the ocean.
  • Boat Structures – Large, stationary boats with sails anchored to your dock.
  • Boat Storage – Boats in Minecraft are very small, but you can make a section to place some boats into the world.
  • Walkways – Lighted and decorated walkways on the ocean.
  • Markets – A large square out on the ocean with shop buildings or tents.
  • Beacons – Building a beacon near your dock can provide increased movement speed.

Here are our top picks for the best Minecraft dock designs and ideas to give you some inspiration.

1. Fishing Dock

This is a great example of a small fishing dock that includes some small buildings, lighting, boat storage, and areas for fishing. Since it is so small and compact, it can easily be built on most bodies of water.

Since this dock design is mostly made out of wood, it would not be too difficult to build in any survival world. The buildings can even be used as a storage chest area for all your fishing and boating supplies.

2. Minecraft Harbor

A little more industrial-looking dock design with buildings on the shore, a large wooden platform on the shore, decorative storage boxes, and some ships built on the water.

A really cool addition is the windmill build off in the distance! You could also substitute with a lighthouse or other ocean related building.

3. Simple Wooden Dock

This small fishing dock is probably one of the most simple designs you will find. The use of fences as poles into the water (along with a fence underneath for support) is a fantastic idea.

It would be a cool building idea to build a basement or underground area below the house.

4. City Docks

If you’re building an urban city on the water, don’t forget to build a little bit into the ocean! This Minecraft dock design has a great walkway and decorative walls along the ocean, grass square for trees, and stairs going down to the ocean level.

This design is not made from wood, but the material choice definitely suits the buildings around it. For a dock like this, you could use white concrete blocks or even just regular stone.

5. Medieval Dock (with Shops)

These docks are fairly small and focus a lot on the buildings on the shore. Building using Medieval architecture is a good idea for docks because boats were a major mode of transport in that time period.

Some ideas for the buildings could be to keep quality Minecraft food inside or have a little shop. Connecting the rail tracks to a minecart system will also allow easy access to the ocean!

6. Pirate Cove

If you enjoy building with a pirate theme, this is definitely the dock design for you. You will probably need to find a good location that feels like a hidden cove or bay. After all, pirates don’t usually live right out in the open on the beach!

Doing your potion brewing here might be a good idea, or even storing your valuables like gold and diamonds.

7. Cargo Dock

This Minecraft dock idea is designed around unloading massive container ships. Due to the size and scale of this build, it may be better done on creative mode!

Since this design is more urban, installing a Minecraft texture pack is a smart idea.

8. Ocean Town

A cool idea for an ocean dock in Minecraft is to add lots of buildings and make a full town. As seen in this video, it is easy to add buildings right along your walkways and even add some height to those buildings.

When building a bigger town, it might be smart to build some decorations for the town. Some ideas could be to build some statues or add some seating areas with trees.

9. Village Docks

If you’re building a village right on the water and want some docks built nearby, this design will work nicely. The use of walls and stairs going down to the dock area gives the feeling that the dock is quite separate from the village.

10. Warehouse Pier

A neat little warehouse with large doors and a small dock nearby. The warehouse can be used to store goods and the railway can be connected to other rail systems.

Stacking blocks outside like pumpkins, watermelons, and chests is a great idea as well.

That concludes our top picks for the best Minecraft dock designs . Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Leave a comment below!
