Boat of the Week: This Rule-Breaking 135-Foot Superyacht Has Been Turning Heads for More Than a Decade

Lord Norman

Love it or loathe it, there are no half-measures when it comes to the polarizing, mind-bending lines of the 135-foot superyacht Ocean Emerald .

That arching sweep of its steely-gray superstructure. The awkward, uncomfortable roofline as it swoops down to meet the pinched bow. Those harsh horizontal bars along the flanks that might not look out of place in a prison cell. Yet, see Ocean Emerald anchored out anywhere from St. Bart’s to St. Tropez, or Capri to Cape Cod, and she’s guaranteed to create an endless stream of Instagram posts.

When the yacht was launched back in 2009, she simply defied convention by breaking all the rules. Which is exactly what her designer, the legendary British architect Lord Norman Foster , wanted. Foster, now a feisty 85, does not do conventional. He’s given the world such landmark buildings as London’s 30 St. Mary Axe, better known as the “Gherkin,” the spaceship-like Apple campus in Cupertino , Calif. and the oceanliner-style Yacht Club de Monaco.

Camper

Ocean Emerald ‘s rewrite-the-rules profile is similar to Lord Norman Foster’s eclectic land-based architecture like the “Gherkin” building in London or Apple’s spaceship-like campus in California.  Camper & Nicholsons

One of his most publicized sayings describes his thinking behind this quirky superyacht: “As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown.”

While Ocean Emerald wasn’t his first foray into superyacht design—that was the Lürssen-built 190-foot Izanami , launched in 1993 (and renamed Ronin by Oracle’s Larry Ellison)—she was without a doubt his most controversial. Built by Rodriguez Yachts, Ocean Emerald features an all-aluminum hull and a lightweight composite superstructure. Power comes from a pair of 1,400-horsepower Caterpillar diesels that deliver a top speed of 18 knots and effortless 14-knot cruise.

Standout features include floor-to-ceiling windows, huge decks for entertaining, and three flights of wide teak staircases at the stern to give guests a workout while climbing from water-level to the top-deck jacuzzi. On board there’s accommodation for 10 guests in five cabins, plus a crew of nine. The spacious owner’s suite is on the main deck right at the front of the yacht, with views out across the bow.

Helm station

Even the helm station is highly unconventional, though it gives the captain a better forward view of the water than most super yachts.  Camper & NIcholsons

Ocean Emerald was actually one of three identical designs built between 2009 and 2010 for a fractional ownership program called YachtPlus. The idea was that someone could purchase an eighth share and get a guaranteed 30 nights annually on board. These would be split between the Mediterranean and Caribbean, with access to Ocean Emerald, or sister yachts Ocean Pearl or Ocean Sapphire. Lord Foster himself was one of the original investors. Ultimately, the project failed and the yachts were sold off. In 2013,  Ocean Emerald was snapped-up by British businessman Nigel Plaskett and moved to his home base in the Gulf of Thailand. He has been successfully chartering the yacht there for 10 weeks per year, charging around $113,000 a week.

If Ocean Emerald looks familiar, it might be because you saw her at the movies. Just before Plaskett bought the yacht, she made her film debut in the action-thriller “Point Break,” a re-make of the 1991 high-adrenaline, cult classic starring Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze. The yacht was filmed off the coast of Brindisi in Italy and used as the scene of a raucous party.

“No, it wasn’t love at first sight,” Plaskett told Robb Report about his first impression of the yacht. “But I do love things that are different and unique. And Ocean Emerald is definitely that.”

Lead

Ocean Emerald has two virtually identical sisterships. One of them, Ocean Sapphire , is also for sale for $6.98 million.  Camper & Nicholsons

The British-born engineer explained what quickly won him over was the yacht’s tremendous volume of interior space—around 30 percent more than a typical yacht of this size. During the seven years he has owned her, Plaskett has commissioned two full interior refits, using local Thai artisans. The last one, carried out last year, saw the interior go ultra-modern to match the yacht’s dramatic exterior. “She’s been a very successful charter yacht,” says Plaskett. “Of course, here in the Bay of Thailand there’s nobody else chartering. Russians, especially, love her because she’s so different.”

While Ocean Emerald was reputed to have cost more than $24 million to build, she’s now up for sale with Camper & Nicholsons for $6.86 million. Want two? The yacht’s sistership, Ocean Sapphire, is also on the market with Zurich-based Schmidt Yachting for $6.98 million. Just don’t expect to cruise anywhere in either yacht and not be noticed.

On board with Nigel Plaskett, owner of divisive yacht Ocean Emerald

Nigel Plaskett, the owner of superyacht Ocean Emerald , tells Dominique Afacan what drew him to a boat that “looked like a hospital” when it was launched – and how he transformed it to a home from home...

Ocean Emerald is not for everyone. Like yachting Marmite, people tend to love her or hate her; in fact, there are entire internet chat rooms devoted to deconstructing and debating her design. Lord Foster is the man either to thank or to ridicule, depending on your opinion. It was, after all, the world-famous British architect who conceived that grey aluminium superstructure, which sweeps up from the bow and then, as if showing off, never stops, dropping back down aft to create an arching silhouette that wouldn’t look out of place in a Bond movie (the boat actually featured in the remake of Point Break ).

Alongside Foster’s other creations, the likes of London’s “Gherkin” tower and the Monaco Yacht Club, she fits right in, but out there on the water, Ocean Emerald stands quite apart. Such an attention-seeking boat might appeal to a superyacht owner with similar characteristics, one might imagine. With Nigel Plaskett at the helm, it’s more a case of opposites attract. This is a softly spoken, unassuming Englishman who just happens to love boats.

As a child growing up in Hampshire, the whole family would sail together, sowing the seeds of his lifelong passion. “It’s in my blood,” explains Plaskett, from his home in the Gulf of Thailand. “The first boat we had was a Senior 26 when I was just eight years old. Sailing wasn’t very popular in England at the time, but the Chichester Yacht Basin had just opened and somehow we all got involved. My brother Neil and I would go and help with work on the boat at weekends – cleaning, painting, sanding, whatever – and then we’d all jump on and go across to the Isle of Wight or around the Solent.” Plaskett’s ownership journey began soon after, when, aged just 15, he bought himself a small cabin cruiser on the Thames for £640. “I kept it for a year and then sold it at a profit,” he says. This early-won flair for business meant that joining his father’s new company, Trafalgar, aged just 16, was a natural next step. He joined the day after he left school.

Trafalgar, in its beginnings, was simply an import agent for engineering parts from Europe and Asia but soon Plaskett made the smart decision to change the business model and open manufacturing plants in the UK, where quality and service could differentiate it from the Asian companies that were undercutting Trafalgar. With Plaskett and brother Neil both on board, the company quickly prospered, growing to a 200-strong operation and turning over around £20 million a year. In 2001, Trafalgar was able to buy out its main competitor Spheric and eventually sold out as Spheric–Trafalgar to a Japanese company three years ago. “It’s nothing to do with us now at all,” says Plaskett, “we’re just enjoying ourselves!” At 58, the good life has come early.

Leisure time before the sale of the business was something of a luxury, and despite owning multiple yachts over the years, he was once more frugal in his purchases. A Sunseeker Superhawk here, a Bilgin 100 Jumbo there. Suddenly faced with freedom and fewer financial barriers, his buying motivations shifted. “Boating before could feel a bit like camping! I’d be rocking about at sea and I didn’t have proper sized bathrooms and things,” he says. “After we sold the business I wanted something more comfortable that I could go away on for long periods. That translated to about the 40 metre mark for me.”

Scanning the internet, he saw the familiar outline of the 41 metre Ocean Emerald , built by Rodriguez Yachts back in 2006. “The first time I had seen her was in Nice when I was purchasing my Bilgin 100,” Plaskett recalls. “The day I went to pick [the Bilgin] up, Ocean Emerald was doing a press day just after its launch. It wasn’t love at first sight, but I was definitely interested. I went up and had a good look around.”

Having dabbled in design and architecture himself, Plaskett gave the boat more time and consideration than most. “A lot of people see Ocean Emerald and immediately think she doesn’t translate to what a ‘normal’ superyacht should look like so they decide they don’t like her. Even I was guilty of that at first. But when you actually go on board and look around you realise that there is a tremendous amount of space for the size of the boat. The layout is good too – all the decks look on top of each other which is very sociable. At the same time, if you do want privacy, there are places you can escape to which are quiet.”

The boat was originally built as one of a series of four for YachtPlus, a co-ownership scheme that didn’t work out. Her multiple owners (including Lord Foster himself) were eventually taken over by one buyer, who later sold the boat to Plaskett. “I feel I got a reasonable deal,” he says, although he won’t reveal the price he paid. Today, he recoups some of the cost of ownership through charter, but the benefits for him go beyond the financial. “For me, charter is a hobby,” he explains. “I still have a property company in the UK but I employ someone else to run it for me so it doesn’t stimulate the brain. With charter, I end up doing a bit of management and a bit of sales. It’s good for me.”

While the boat is chartering in Thailand , which usually ends up being about six to 10 weeks a year, guests will find Plaskett on board too, with no exceptions. “The Thai mentality is to say yes to everything and not to offend by saying no. I am there to manage the crew in that respect, though I try to fade into the background for the sake of the clients,” he says. Most of his guests come from Russia and Europe with the odd day charter from China – and while 99 per cent of charters have been a resounding success, Plaskett will not tolerate bad behaviour when it comes to treatment of his crew. “If anyone treats them like dirt, I will throw them off, simple as that,” he says. That has happened once, but the juicy details are sadly off limits.

Plaskett, who lives in the Gulf of Thailand for 10 months a year, is well-qualified to recommend the best itineraries to his guests. “The nicest trip is usually to Ko Chang or Cambodia then across to Ko Samui, Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan, and finally back up to Bangkok. It’s a triangle that ticks a lot of boxes – there’s a good mix of authentic Thailand alongside more luxurious tourist spots within easy reach.” Ocean Emerald was actually the first superyacht to get a charter licence in Thailand, but the bureaucracy and barriers surrounding the process have meant that few other boats have followed. For Plaskett, there’s a long way to go to perfect charter laws in Thailand. “In their current state, most owners wouldn’t want to get involved. All the government departments are arguing with each other,” he says.

Tricky visa issues are navigated by employing local crew through his Thai company. “I find the crew here better than their Western counterparts to be honest,” he says. “In Europe there are so many regulations, whereas here the mentality is different. They just want to get the job done. In the Med, you only need to walk around a marina to see the number of crew sitting doing nothing. That never happens on Ocean Emerald .” The fact that crew are paid well above the national Thai standard must also make it easier to find and retain talent, and in fact, many of Ocean Emerald’s nine crew have been with Plaskett for years, moving with him as he progressed from boat to boat.

Beyond charter and crew complications, Plaskett felt that there were also design issues to iron out, a result, perhaps, of having an architect at the helm rather than a traditional yacht designer? “I like the fact that architects dabble in boat design,” he says. “My only feeling is that they should perhaps work alongside the specialists, too. Ocean Emerald was very much designed for looks over practicality. Things like storage space are missing and the top deck was literally an open space when I bought it. There was no nice bar or spa pool – architects are prone to forget those bits and sometimes prioritise concept over detail.”

Having built and designed a few of his own homes in the UK, Mallorca and Thailand, putting everything right was half of the appeal. “When the boat was first launched, it looked like a hospital,” he recalls. “Everything was white inside, it was very cold looking. I wanted to make it warmer and more homely.”

He worked with local companies in Thailand to design bespoke furniture and set about creating a total change in ambience. The four guest cabins downstairs are next on his list, with plans for a more flexible layout so that when fewer guests are on board, cabins can be extended. “Like many boats of this size you lose so much space with the garage and the toys at the back. Once you take the crew area out, you’re left with very little room for the other cabins. It’s a bit out of sync really – you’ve got a very luxurious master suite and then you cram in four bedrooms.”

For most of the year, though, it is just Plaskett and his friends and family on board and so lack of space is not an issue. His brother Neil often leaves his Sunseeker 96 behind in the UK and comes out to Thailand for some sunshine; even when the boat is parked up in Ocean Marina, Nigel is on board every day. “The temperature is so much more pleasant on the sea so I’ll often use her as my office,” he explains. “I wanted the boat to be a home from home.”

Speaking of homes, might Plaskett want to try his hand at building a boat from scratch, given that he’s already triumphed with his own properties? A firm negative. “The houses were enough!” he says. Perhaps venture into sail, then? Turns out, he’s already ticked that one off his bucket list. “I’ve actually got a sailing yacht, O’Lina , a 27 metre, but I’ve given it to my son to look after. I much prefer Ocean Emerald .”

The yachting community might still be in two minds about this unusual boat, but she has, happily, found her biggest fan in Nigel Plaskett.

Thailand’s Super Charter: Ocean Emerald

  • August 4, 2021

With Thailand reopening to tourism, Phuket is back on the wish list of holiday-goers and there are few more memorable ways of cruising the area’s coastal delights than on Ocean Emerald, one of Asia’s most iconic resident superyachts. Words: Chrissie McClatchie. Photos: Camper & Nicholsons.

Designed by Lord Norman Foster, the 41.3m Ocean Emerald had a refit in 2009

A country where natural beauty collides with a rich fabric of cultural influences and a bounty of fresh flavours, Thailand is a traveller’s dream. Here, in the heart of Asia, gentle crystalline waters lap against a shock of pure white sand, framed by lush forests of green that hint at the verdant interiors that await.

It’s a country that promises clear blue skies and the good life, whether that means stripped-back yoga on the beach or five-star fanfare.

As a superyacht destination, Thailand’s appeal has been on the rise for the last decade or more, especially with the investments in infrastructure both the public and private sector have made. It’s hardly a surprise. Along with the natural attractions, easy flight connections from around the globe plus a selection of first-class marinas and other facilities and services are driving this growth.

As we start to dip our toes back into travel, Thailand is emerging as one of the first countries in the Asia-Pacific region to reopen to visitors. And with the advantages of private yacht holidays in this current climate needing little explanation, the realisation that this slice of tropical paradise is now within reach is welcome news for all.

CAMPER & NICHOLSONS

Currently based in Phuket, Ocean Emerald is a renowned yacht for charter with Camper & Nicholsons and her core Thai crew can’t wait to welcome guests back on board to share their beautiful country.

With her distinctive grey exterior and sweeping, curved superstructure, the 41.3m yacht was designed by Lord Norman Foster and launched by Rodriquez Yachts in 2009, and she’s been revitalised following a 2019 refit. As always, she turns heads wherever she goes.

Ocean Emerald’s superstructure is iconic

With a tremendous amount of interior space compared to many yachts of her size, she can sleep 10 guests comfortably in five luxurious staterooms. Her accommodation is wonderfully versatile.

Most notably, two of the lower-deck double cabins can transform into a second full-beam master suite with his and her bathrooms. Such a configuration is a fantastic value-add for two families wishing to charter together.

Her two spacious saloons both enjoy a powerful connection with the surrounding scenery and plenty of natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. Her interior spaces offer a choice of formal dining options, a bar, games station and an extensive movie library.

The main-deck saloon benefited from the 2019 refit

As dusk falls after sunset aperitifs on the sundeck, the upper saloon can be transformed into ‘party central’ complete with a state-of-the-art lighting system – it’s the perfect venue to dance the night away.

Other attractions include a fully-stocked toy garage, sundeck Jacuzzi surrounded by sunpads, on-deck barbecue, and ample lounging and dining spaces all protected by sunshades. The alfresco life can be enjoyed any time of the day on her characteristic cascading decks.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

A seven-day sample itinerary on Ocean Emerald will see you arriving at Phuket Yacht Haven or Ao Po Grand Marina to a warm welcome from the captain and crew, then a cool drink and tour of the yacht as you settle in for departure.

The upper-deck saloon can be adapted for special occasions

Day two will feature memorable cruising through Phang Nga, with its storied landscape of limestone cliffs (karsts), rocks and small beaches.

At anchor off Koh Hong, it’s time to test your kayaking skills as you explore the labyrinth of lagoons while spotting the area’s unique animal life such as fiddler crabs, mudskippers and crab-eating macaques.

In the afternoon, set sail for the Phi Phi Islands, one of the settings that has made this stretch of paradise a star of the silver screen. Away from the crowds, there are plenty of quieter bays to drop anchor for a spot of snorkelling or to find land-based attractions such as caves or sublime viewpoints.

The upper deck also offers alfresco dining

The following day’s destination is Koh Lanta National Park and its wealth of islands, home to dramatic limestone cliffs, winding mangrove rivers and secluded beaches. Together, the sparsely populated Koh Ngai and neighbouring Koh Muk and Koh Kradan form a golden triangle made for island hopping.

On day five, sail to Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai, two remote islands regarded among the most beautiful in southern Thailand – you’ll feel like you’ve escaped from the rest of the world. Both islands have sublime beaches and are a delight to explore by tender or kayak, while the surrounding reef is an explosion of vibrant colours.

Accommodation is headed by a luxurious master suite

Koh Ha, which means ‘Five Islands’ in Thai, is your treat on day six and divers can come face to face with a rich array of marine life in a central lagoon framed by a large sandy bay. Your last night in Thailand will be memorable, whether it’s an intimate beach barbecue arranged by the crew or a louder celebration onboard the yacht before you set sail for Phuket the following morning. www.camperandnicholsons.com

This spectacular and contemporary 41 meter masterpiece has been designed with a strong emphasis on space and light and has five suites for up 12 guests. Throughout the yacht’s interior, the architects maximized the amount of natural light by incorporating extensive floor- to-ceiling windows and walls of light-coloured hardwoods with high-gloss finishes. The design is most successful in the airy master suite, a full-beam residence with two private terraces.

FEATURED: Charter OCEAN EMERALD for 10 days at a rate of 109,000 Euro + ALL. This represents a 20% discount for all dates from now up until 1st November 2021. Other offers are welcome for consideration.

Ocean Emerald has an ultra-modern look designed by world-famous British architect, Lord Norman Foster. This iconic superyacht has a striking silhouette that sees the superstructure line sweep up from the bow and drop down to the stern in a dramatic curve that can’t help but turn heads wherever it goes. This design creates extensive deck space and dramatic cascading exterior staircases, as well as increasing the window size providing an influx of natural light to the interior.

A full interior refit in 2019 saw the introduction of a stylish contemporary design throughout the yacht. From wall fabric to custom-built sofas, every element of the interior was touched on. The main deck salon makes the most of Ocean Emerald’s floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows creating a powerful visual connection with its surroundings. Here you will find a formal dining area and plenty of space to relax in luxurious comfort. In general, Ocean Emerald offers a tremendous amount of interior space compared to many other yachts of this size.

Ocean Emerald’s accommodation is comprised of five suites, in which up to 12 guests can be comfortably accommodated. The master suite is full-beam and is positioned on the main deck with a spacious en-suite shower-room and access to two private balconies on the bow. On the lower deck there are two VIP double cabins, a third double with two Pullman berths, and finally a twin cabin with another Pullman berth completing the offering.

The refit not only updated the style of the interior, but it too resulted in the added flexibility of the lower deck accommodation. Should guests wish, they have the option of transforming the two VIP double cabins into a second full-beam master suite with a spacious lounge area and his and her bathrooms. This is a fantastic value-add for two families wishing to charter the yacht together, or for those guests who simply would like a bit more space.

On the upper deck there’s a second salon continuing the sophisticated modern atmosphere which features a further formal dining option, a bar, game station and an extensive movie library. There’s also a state-of-the-art lighting system that transforms this space in the evening, great for a party, and the adjoining aft deck is ideal for alfresco dining with the option of a retractable shade for those hot summer lunches.

On the sundeck you will find sunpads surrounding the generously-sized Jacuzzi, lounge chairs, a further alfresco dining option, and a bar.

Ocean Emerald’s core Thai crew deliver a warm welcome and an outstanding level of service. The yacht can also boast two Chefs, one a French gourmet and the other Thai, so cuisine on board is an exciting fusion of specialties.

Further facilities for guests to enjoy include jetskis, kayaks, a wakeboard and waterskis, scuba diving equipment for use by those who are qualified, and a whole host of inflatable and towable toys that can be pulled from her tender – which can achieve 40-plus knots!

Ocean Emerald is a versatile superyacht that can easily switch up the gears from a relaxed family charter to a glamorous party yacht.

Ocean Emerald is available for charter in Thailand, Malaysia and the surrounding countries. The unspoiled Anambas Islands are particularly beautiful from May to October and the stunning Mergui Archipelago of Myanmar is a great destination between November and April.
