Review of Seal 22

Seal 22

Basic specs.

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

Keel

DaggerBoard

The Seal 22 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.61 - 0.71 meter (2.00 - 2.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Seal 22 is 2.27, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Seal 22 is about 106 kg/cm, alternatively 596 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 106 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 596 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Broker's Comments

A lovely example of this extremely practical family sailer. With its drop keel and large removeable companionway, it provides a very sociable environment for all the family, or can be easily sailed single handed. It is ready to go, her condition being a credit to its current owner. This boat has been viewed and photographed by Ian of Boatshed Poole. Register or log in to see 42 more photos of this boat. The PSSA is the class association for Parker and Seal lift keel yachts and other types of shallow draft yachts. As an active, friendly club with almost 350 members, it organises rallies, social events and an annual race around the Isle of Wight. Seals and Parkers are British-built yachts, ranging in length from 21' to 33', mostly with lifting keels. They started with the Seal 22 in 1970, built by John Baker, and followed by the Seal 28 and Super Seal 26. In 1981, Bill Parker took over the range and added the Parker 21, Parker 27 and Parker 31. These then evolved into a high-quality range of cruiser-racers built by Parker Lift-Keel Yachts - the trailable Parker 235, the Parker 285 and the Parker 335. In 2009, Parker Lift-Keel yachts ceased trading.

Our interests cover:

Broker's Comments

A well presented example of the popular Seal 22. The Seal has a retractable fin keel that enables you to explore the shallows, run-up on the beach, trail the boat behind a car and use a drying mooring. She was built in Devon as a family sailing boat with similar performance to a dinghy but with the advantage of accommodation for weekends away. The unusually wide companionway opening gives very easy access to and from the cockpit and gives the interior a feeling of light and space. This particular boat comes with a solid looking trailer as well, making her easy to relocate and store ashore.

Broker's Comments

The Seal 22 is a seaworthy and easy to handle day sailer, with potential for trailering. With the lifting keel it also makes an ideal boat for exploring the shallows. An interesting and useful feature of the Seal 22 is the large companionway entrance; there is no bulkhead and the boat therefore opens up to form an “inner cockpit” - an ideal place to get out of the weather, whilst keeping a look out. This innovative design feature also creates a larger interior than other boats of a similar size, providing four berths and six at a pinch!

On visiting the boat, I was struck by the upkeep and simplicity of controls. This tidy pocket cruiser would be ideal for exploring rivers and coastlines and suitable for anybody starting or looking for carefree sailing.

BTC-22: Half the size, double the fun

David Harding

  • David Harding
  • June 12, 2020

As the first sporty 22-footer we have seen from a British builder in a long time, the BTC-22 is set to fill a significant gap in the market, as David Harding found out

A BTC-22 on the Solent

For 22ft, the BTC has a generous cockpit and a pleasing turn of speed to rival larger boats. Credit: David Harding

Product Overview

  • Sprightly performance
  • Surprisingly roomy accommodation
  • Good range
of options
  • Some production details still
being refined
  • Footbrace needed in cockpit for crew
  • Keel winch needs lower gearing

Time was when anyone wanting a lively 22ft (6.7m) family cruiser with a lifting keel was almost spoiled for choice.

Popular home-produced examples included the E-Boat, Evolution 22, Seal 22, Anderson 22, Atlanta Catch 22, Fox Terrier, Eclipse, Limbo 6.6, Timpenny 670 and Skipper 700.

Then there were alternatives such as the Jaguar 21, Parker 21 and Parker 235, not to mention European offerings such as the Etap 22.

EDC-22 aft

The chines are softer than on the wooden prototype but the hull shape still provides a degree of form stability. Credit: David Harding

So what happened? Well, for some time now, would-be buyers in the UK in search of a trailable boat of this size have had a choice between a European lake-sailer and something that strikes a rather more traditional note.

Modern trailable all-rounders suited to British coastal waters have been few and far between, leaving those in search of one to find and import a boat themselves and then face the possibility of having the only one in
the country.

Given the versatility of a good 22-footer – capable of crossing the Atlantic, as the Anderson and E-Boat did, yet small enough to trail to new cruising grounds – it’s refreshing that, at long last, a British builder has introduced a new one.

Down below on a BTC-22

Below decks the cabin is simply but neatly finished, the flow-coasted inside to the hull and deck allowing easy access to fittings and fastenings. Credit: David Harding

It comes in the form of the BTC-22, designed by Buckley Yacht Design and built in Southampton by Composite Mouldings (CML), which is also run by the Buckley family.

Although CML might be an unfamiliar name to many, it was born out of Blondecell (Tradewinds, Cromarty 36 et al) and has built over 400 Hawk 20s for Reid Marine.

Supplying composite mouldings to builders such as Oyster, CML is experienced in resin infusion, structural analysis and the use of carbon- fibre and aramids.

A man sailing a BTC-22 in the Solent

Jib sheets can be cross sheeted for single-handing sailing. Credit: David Harding

With this sort of experience to draw on, as well as involvement in the design of Alex Thompson’s Hugo Boss, the combined forces of CML and Buckley Yacht Design should be more than capable of producing a trailable 22.

But what sort of boat is the BTC?

I sailed the first production version to find out.

Despite having only recently appeared in production form, the BTC-22 has been in development for some time.

I sailed her when she was first launched in 2016 as the RTC-22, and again two years later following refinements in several areas.

THE TEST VERDICT

We have needed something like the BTC-22 for a long time.

The demise of the earlier British-built 22s and, more recently, the discontinuation of boats such as the Elan 210, has left a gap in the market for a wholesome, versatile, trailable boat of this size that offers space, pace, economy and simplicity.

BTC-22

Despite a north-westerly wind, gusting 30 knots at times, the swing-keeler coped well. Credit: David Harding

Many of the European lake-sailers I have tested have lacked stiffness and felt uncomfortable in lively conditions, especially at sea, while the alternative ‘trad and tan’ approach doesn’t appeal to everyone.

After several years of development, the BTC is still a ‘work in progress’ because CML and Buckley Yacht Design have been working on her alongside other projects.

At long last, however, it looks as though she’s nearly there and I’m sure plenty of people will be ready
for a boat like this.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

With the choice of options and keels the BTC has the potential to appeal to a wide audience.

I would like to sail a production version in choppier waters to see how snugly the swing keel fits in its case, because keel ‘judder’ when you bounce over a wave,
and banging when the pressure comes off downwind,
are sometimes mildly disconcerting features of swing-keelers.

CML has the experience and technical know-how to cope with such challenges and, on the whole, construction looks reassuring.

BTC-22

The BTC is undoubtedly the epitome of the trailable 22, and a reminder of why boats of this type were once so popular. Credit: David Harding

The core in the hull and deck incorporates PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) derived from 1,400 recycled plastic bottles, so you
can even put a tick in the ‘green’ box.

Chosen for its structural qualities quite apart from any environmental considerations, PET is also used in the resin in the
deck, while the hull laminate incorporates vinylester
and E-Glass.

All told, there’s a lot to like about the BTC-22. Most of the bits that matter look and feel robust and solidly engineered. As she’s also roomy, well mannered, pretty quick and sensibly priced, I see little to hold her back.

Dear All, information please, does the above boat take to the ground happily as in a swinging drying out mooring, been on the seal web site not much info.i am mainly thinking of the lifting mech been jammed up, also any comments good or bad re these boats. thanks

mainmarine

Due to the stub keel they will lean, unless you fit legs or the mud is deep enough. Lifting mechanism is a basic screw jack pulling wire strop. Easy to sail, like a big dinghy. Malc

Well-known member

The lifting keel on the seal 22 has a ballast bulb which stays underneath the boat. The keel mechanism is therefore unlikely to get jammed up by mud and gravel being forced up the slot. Watch out that the rudder doesn't lift off the pintles when she dries out, though. Cheers! Neil

steviewhitts

We have two Seal 22's in our Club - one dries out upright quite happily on soft mud; the other dries out on a harder shingle bottom and leans over to one side due to the stub of the keel as explained in other posts. Hope this helps.

Many thanks to all

Seal 22 Mk 2 - Boat Details

An Angus Primrose design for John Baker Ltd. this is the Mk11 version built in the mid to late 1970's. These are relatively fast boats for their size, yet are easy to handle. The lifting keel is an iron casting, with a wide base to keep the centre of gravity low, and it partially retracts to reduce draught. The draft is only 0.61M with the keel up but 1.22M with it down. These boats make ideal day sailers with good accommodation and seaworthy enough for longer coastal cruises. swiss replica watches https://www.topwatchesmall.com

This Seal 22 was purchased by her current owner three years ago and is now sadly for sale due to unforeseen circumstances. Her cabin is surprisingly spacious and the accommodation could be rearranged in order to enable one or two small children’s berths to be created in the forecabin. The Seal 22 is an ideal boat for a young family looking to start sailing and this example offers some scope for improvement cosmetically. A twin axle, braked, RM road trailer may be available by separate negotiation or, if the purchaser does not require the trailer, the vendor has stated that he may be willing to transport the boat to her new home at a reasonable cost. Alternatively, the boat’s current mooring on the northern Broads may be available to the purchaser until Easter 2011 subject to agreement from the mooring owner. Currently lying afloat

Broker's Comments

The Seal 22 was designed by Angus Primrose as a weekender, although some have accomplished longer cruises. She is an ideal boat for drying out in harbours or on moorings with her drop keel or for exploring shallow estuaries. She is clean and tidy externally but needs TLC inside and a little bit spent on some new equipment. However she offers good value at the price and is an easy and enjoyable boat to sail. These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Broker's Comments

Here we have a Seal Sinbad 22 trailer sailor complete with twin axle road trailer. This delightful vessel has had just three owners and the current owner has enjoyed the boat on the Norfolk Broads for the last 5 years. She has a lifting keel which makes her a breeze to trail anywhere you wish to sail. Complete with Jeckells main and foresail plus a spinnaker this boat is capable of club racing and has partaken in such events with the current owner. The boats sail number is 289. She has been out of the water for most of last year due to the Covid-19 issues and the owner is now unable to use the boat due to recent health issues. Her Boat safety Certificate has expired however the owner has commissioned a fresh 4 years certificate to be issued by the end of July. So the boat will have a fresh BSS on her for the new owner. She has the added benefit of a single 10hp Yanmar diesel inboard engine on shaft. She benefits from also having a compact galley plus a sea toilet and also pressurised hot water. She can sleep 5 so is a quite spacious and flexible vessel at a very attractive overall package cost.

These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

US military revises account of what happened to 2 SEALs who died trying to board Yemen-bound ship

Both navy special warfare operator 1st class christopher j. chambers and navy special warfare operator 2nd class nathan gage ingram were lost at sea., by lolita c. baldor | the associated press • published january 31, 2024 • updated on january 31, 2024 at 2:33 pm.

U.S. officials are revising their preliminary findings on what happened to two Navy SEALs who died during a mission to board an unflagged ship that was carrying illicit Iranian-made weapons to Yemen.

Based on further review and interviews with personnel involved in the operations, U.S. officials said Wednesday that Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J. Chambers was boarding the boat on Jan. 11 and slipped into the gap the high waves had created between the vessel and the SEALs’ combatant craft. As Chambers fell, Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram jumped in to try to save him, according to U.S. officials familiar with what happened.

In the immediate aftermath, U.S. officials had indicated that Ingram had fallen in and that Chambers had jumped in after him. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing review of the mission, said the change is based on new information that has been gathered.

Both Chambers and Ingram were lost at sea, as efforts to find and rescue them were unsuccessful.

The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet is conducting an investigation. That probe is expected to examine whether the SEALs were properly equipped and trained for the mission, whether procedures were followed, and any decisions regarding the timing and approval of the raid, including the weather and the state of the seas.

Chambers, 37, of Maryland, enlisted in the Navy in 2012 and graduated from SEAL training in 2014. Ingram, 27, of Texas, enlisted in 2019 and graduated from SEAL training in 2021.

  1. SEAL 22

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  2. Review of Seal 22

The Seal 22 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well. The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which ...
