Built by: Blohm+Voss of Hamburg, with interiors and exteriors designed by Terence Disdale. Launched in 2009, it cost $500 million (the equivalent of £623 million today).

The Club's a wonderful idea and long overdue. I've had teeth for years but that doesn't make me a dentist. I've had yachts for years, but I'm still glad of the opportunity to share knowledge and best practice, and help make ownership less opaque.

Those prepared to stand by their promises should be happy to have their undertakings written down. Transparency promotes trust, eliminates misunderstandings and builds stronger relationships. Drafting agreements is time-consuming and rarely cost-effective for individual transactions, Members will soon have at their fingertips a growing suite of ready-made, plain-language documents. So we’ve commissioned a suite of ready-made, plain-language documents covering most aspects of ownership, plus practical guides on their use.

Bringing owners together like this, it’s been hard to know where to begin. I think we’re starting in the right place with guidance and standardised agreements. These are what’ll make owning as straightforward as possible, as quickly as possible.

The former skipper and project manager John McLean knows the importance running a comprehensive project leadership, from inception to completion.

As an already very capable, competitive yachtsman John joined superyachting industry in 2007 while on sabbatical leave from Investment role in Mayfair London. Having completed a transatlantic on a 32 foot sailboat he relished a new opportunity. To date he has sailed over 200,000 miles and has worked for some of the largest vessels in the world and well known to owners in the industry. He has worked all the major superyacht hubs and enjoyed expeditions to the Arctic and other destinations. Leaving Captaincy behind him John went on to managing fleets of vessels and helicopters commercially. Specialising in the Maritime and construction and as qualified project manager John has a history of running successful projects. This has included set up successful businesses which has lead him realising his own dreams of a Classic Yacht. John is currently writing a book on Superyachting for owners.

Elisabeth McLean, originally from Sweden with a background in engineering, is also keen to be on the water. A proud design team member of the British America’s Cup contender for the 35th America’s Cup, she has previously worked for Dutch Luxury Yacht manufacturer Feadship in the Netherlands and as a consultant in London. Elisabeth is always quick to bring a fresh spreadsheet in for organisation and making things happen.

TSF Connect and METSTRADE 2023

Yacht Event

In November 2023, we went to Amsterdam for the Superyacht Forum TSF Connect, which unites key maritime professionals for networking and knowledge exchange before the METSTRADE show, the world’s largest exhibition for marine equipment and systems. It is an important event where super yachting professionals gather to discuss innovation, sustainability, and market trends. The interactive sessions and expert panels are essential for advancing the industry’s future.

Key highlights included strategic insights on the superyacht industry’s shift towards experience-based luxury yachting. A standout project discussed was Sindalah, a Saudi Arabian private island development, showcasing an ambitious marine and luxury facility plan.

We participated in the Owner Representation Programme workshop, which focused on evolving billionaire preferences and yacht hospitality. Environmental sustainability was a significant topic, notably the Yeti Index (Yacht Environmental Transparency Index), assessing yachts’ ecological impacts.

The event also touched on insurance, technological innovations such as AI in yacht design, and the future direction of the superyacht industry, emphasizing sustainability and advanced technology integration. It was a well-organized event with terrific presenters to share and discuss industry trends and prospects.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023

A Pinnacle of Luxury and Innovation

The Monaco Yacht Show stands as the crowning event in the yachting calendar, unmatched in its grandeur in the Mediterranean. The journey to Monaco, often marked by a crowded train ride, contrasts sharply with the opulence of the event itself. Upon arrival, the view from the top of the hill offers a breathtaking panorama of Monaco, setting the stage for an event steeped in luxury.

This year’s show was notably vibrant, signaling a robust post-COVID recovery in the yachting industry. The Monaco show entrance ushers in visitors to an impressively laid-out space around the marina, demanding a strategic plan to explore everything on offer.

Home to industry giants like Lürssen and Feadship the show also features a wide array of marine businesses, from yacht management to brokerage, all contributing to an undeniable buzz. A significant focus this year was on sustainability, emphasizing the industry’s shift towards greater efficiency and environmental responsibility.

One of the show’s highlights was the array of beach platforms or ‘beach clubs’ at the yacht sterns. Turkish Bilgin Yachts, in particular, showcased a striking yacht featuring an Italianate swimming pool with fountains, a testament to the unique tastes of its owner.

The harbor’s atmosphere was electric – a hub for business dealings, networking, and community building. Off-water events, including numerous evening functions, added to the show’s dynamism.

Design-wise, the trend of using grey hues continues to dominate yacht aesthetics. Notably, Turkish yards made a strong impression, demonstrating their ability to deliver quality craftsmanship on par with established yards in Holland. The show was an eye-opener in terms of the capabilities and innovations being offered, with yards regularly undertaking large builds of 70-100 meters.

Cannes Yacht Show 2023

What’s Trending?

As I walked into the Cannes Yacht Show 2023, I immediately felt its central importance in the yachting community. Approaching the entrance, banners featuring both past and present celebrities hinted at the grandeur of the film industry that Cannes is famously known for.

The Cannes Yacht Festival was graced with great weather, showcasing a plethora of boats divided into two distinct areas: sail and second-hand yachts in one marina, and new yachts for sale in the main marina.

A noticeable trend was the increasing number of high-end day-boats for sale, each offering various options catering to different needs and preferences. Across both these and the larger yachts, a dominant trend was the use of anthracite grey, giving the boats a naval-like finish with an expedition feel. Particularly impressive was Nuova Marine’s Expedition Yacht, featuring large glass windows that offered an amazing sense of space for its size. Onboard, the yacht felt incredibly spacious compared to others of similar size, with meticulous attention to detail, especially in allowing easy owner access. The thoughtful design also facilitated efficient service with discreet access from crew quarters to the owner’s areas.

I hope to see these new expedition yachts start to incorporate ICE-rated or polar hulls, appealing to the more adventurous yacht owner. Additionally, the catamaran market is an exciting space, with Sunreef maintaining its luxurious stance, and new contenders like Alva offering impressive alternatives.

In the larger yacht segment, the usual big names were present, such as Bonetti and Bellagio. However, the absence of larger companies like Feadship and Lürssen was noticeable and could have added more gravitas to the event. Despite this, the six to seven impressive yachts on display showcased the ongoing evolution of the yachting industry. An interesting development was the adaptation of the rear section design, first seen on Alfa Nero’s swimming pool, now replicated in smaller super yachts as compact jacuzzis with a glass finish, adding a luxurious feel and an illusion of grandeur.

Overall, while the Cannes Yacht Show may not be as large as Monaco’s, it certainly holds its own in terms of location and atmosphere.

Revealing its first ever watercraft concept at the show, September 25-28, 2024, GreenJoy strutted its stuff with a picture perfect design as they worked with British full-custom superyacht tender builder Falcon Tenders .

The cinematic reveal held at Falcon's show stand in Monaco, QA26, September 25-28, 2024, found an appreciative audience. Creating a new category of unique catamaran tenders for yachts over 80 meters, the chic shuttles are customized to match the mother yacht or echo the car's marque. They are aimed at storing, carrying, and deploying the owner's personal low-profile vehicle from the garage to the road and back, no helicopter needed.

The vessel permits simultaneous loading and stocking of the extensive cargo bay while the car is being loaded. A platform called the "Pedastol," raises above the height of a point on land, then extends the "Red Carpet," a telescoping ramp with high friction coating, lowering until it lies flush on land. The system creates a stable bridge to the Falcon Tender's center of mass. The car then drives onto the ramp, at which point the Red Carpet and Pedastol lower until the car is completely enveloped and protected for transfer.

The Inspiration

Philip Greenberg is GreenJoy's marketing mind. His intuition that a James Bond-like amphibious tender would bring its own set of compromises in trying to connect land with sea for exotic cars led him to rethink the concept. Thus, a car-carrying tender presented an elegant solution that fit well with the superyacht owner who wishes to simplify the process of bringing his favorite motorcar on board.

This solution allows crew to deliver the owner, already in the car, directly from the yacht and ready to roll. Greenberg notes, "There are plenty of landing craft for deploying utility vehicles to the beach, but this is the first tender capable of delivering exotic, low-clearance cars directly to the road. Many owners already bring Ferraris and Bugattis aboard, but the system of cranes is clumsy, requiring massive yachts to enter the port just for owners to have to wait on deck. I expect we’ll be hearing from those owners soon.”

This presents us an opportunity to take the recent trend in yacht design towards automotive inspiration a step further, creating vessels with particular cars in mind and on board."

Heesen Unveils New 200 ft Superyacht Project: Monte-Carlo

The project has been designed with modern owners in mind, focusing on privacy, wellness and sustainability.

The annual Monaco Yacht Show is the main event on the calendar where the superyacht industry gathers together to reveal what they have been working on. At this year’s show – which runs September 25 – 28 – Dutch superyacht builder Heesen Yachts has revealed its latest project, aptly codenamed Monte-Carlo . Stretching over 200 ft in length, Monte-Carlo is a new steel FDHF superyacht of vast proportions.

The design of this new vessel was undertaken by British studio Harrison Eidsgaard and is comfortably one of Heesen’s most ambitious projects to date. This new yacht has been tailored to the wants and needs of a modern owner, particularly those looking to spend extended periods onboard.  

Extended over four decks, this new yacht is one of the largest in Heesen’s history, with features that have been inspired by current trends in the market. “It is unusual for us to build a four-decker, but we have had a few requests for such a boat from former clients, so it made sense to create one,” said Heesen CEO, Niels Vaessen. “We are addressing a key market that are looking to maximize space and experience on board to share with family and friends.” 

Throughout the design process, privacy was always a significant consideration, a trend that has risen in many owners – post-pandemic – who are looking to spend longer periods on board and potentially work from their yacht. Of the four decks on Heesen’s Project Monte-Carlo, an entire deck is dedicated to the owners, featuring both a master suite and an expansive office area.

“It is a very open master suite, with the bathtub, shower and office all interconnected,” said designer, Peder Eidsgaard. “The benefit of this arrangement is that an incoming owner can easily toy with the space devoted to each area. The potential is huge, you expand the master suite to include a private foredeck with its own sundeck, jacuzzi and a fold-down balcony to starboard. From his/her office, the owner can walk straight out onto the balcony and take a seat.”

In addition to the expansive owner’s deck, guest accommodation can be found entirely on the main deck forward, and is comprised of four large staterooms and a fifth full-beam VIP stateroom.

At the stern of the yacht is an impressive 247-sq-ft pool with glass sides, creating the illusion that passengers are swimming in the sea. On the main deck, there is a ‘ beach lounge ’ – a relaxed and informal dining area that can accommodate up to 14 guests – in addition to an outdoor kitchen and sky lounge seating area.

As well as privacy, new superyacht owners are also interested in wellness , with Hessen’s Project Monte-Carlo ticking that box with a dedicated center on the lower deck. Current mock-ups suggest this space will feature a large gym, sauna, hammam and massage room.

As yacht builders look to make the superyacht industry more sustainable , Heesen has technically enabled Project Monte-Carlo for serial hybrid propulsion, as there is space for a large battery bank. The vessel has also been future-proofed with space for hydrogen combustion or fuel cell when it becomes readily available.

“We see that our owners are increasingly interested in minimizing their environmental impact,” said Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s general manager for design and development. “By planning the yacht around tried-and-tested green solutions, we are helping them make good decisions that don’t add a lot of time and cost to the build.”

Feadship unveils the Concept C, a silent superyacht with all-electric propulsion

Inspired by diamonds and deep pockets, the Dutch shipbuilder revealed its annual concept design at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show

Concept superyachts play a similar role to the concept car, in that they represent a tantalising vision of a future that’s technically just out of reach . The difference, of course, is one of scale; it might cost millions to bring a concept car to physical life, and even more to make it fully functional, but a 75m superyacht concept is only ever going to exist as a virtual proposition.

Feadship Concept C

This is the new Feadship Concept C, the Dutch shipyard’s annual foray into the spectacular and speculative that’s timed to drop during the Monaco Yacht Show 2024 (25 – 28 September), the industry’s biggest and most glamorous shindig. A 75m motoryacht, the Concept C exists only as these renderings, but Feadship believes the proposed systems and technologies are very much part of its future.

Superyachts have been having a hard time of late, mostly before the court of public opinion. No one needs a superyacht, let alone deserves one, and some people deserve one rather less than others. That hasn’t stopped the apparently undeserving from being the industry’s most important customers. And just as car companies have the thankless task of implementing tasteless customer requests, yacht builders are at the whim of clients and interior designers who believe wholeheartedly in the status value of elaborate soft furnishings.

In that respect, a concept yacht is a chance for a boatyard to explore off-kilter aesthetic avenues as well as a refined, tasteful modernity. In the case of Concept C, that task was given to De Voogt Naval Architects, Feadship’s in-house team of designers. Created to celebrate the brand’s 75th anniversary (diamonds are a theme here), the 75m hull has classically elegant proportions (a homage to the late Frits de Voogt, who died in December 2023, and who came to define Feadship’s modern era).

Within that glittering white hull are a number of visual and technical innovations. The diamond theme resurfaces again and again, notably in the faceted edges of the balustrades, the glass-walled pool and even the custom furnishings. At the core of the boat is a glazed atrium, that brings light down into the owner and guest suites below decks.

Overseen by senior designer Ruud Bakker, the design team also worked alongside Amsterdam diamond-cutting workshop Gassan Diamonds to explore the art of faceted patterns and the transmission of light. Another source of inspiration was contemporary architecture that blurs the boundaries between indoors and out. As the shipyard notes, ‘these concepts [were used] to amplify guest contact with the sea, a relationship that owners note sadly tends to fade as yachts get larger’.

In section, Concept C has a series of half decks, rather than the conventional arrangement, which does away with long corridors, and allows the central atrium to illuminate more levels. A ‘floating’ staircase and platform-style lift move through this vertical space. The latter is a signature feature, rising up to the top of the vessel where it cantilevers out over the upper deck to become a ‘private crow’s nest’. Towards the rear of the hull is a partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge, with side terraces that can be lowered to create an al fresco seating and dining area, along with a bar. Towards the stern, you’ll find a gym and a spa.

Of course, being fully conceptual means the rigorous detailing and compliance required to bring these features to life hasn’t been fully thought through, let alone costed, but Feadship’s customers are the kind of people who would sign up to bring such ideas to life. On a more practical level, the Concept C showcases pure electric propulsion, a development of the system successfully deployed in the 2015 Savannah, originally commissioned by the late Swedish-Canadian mining magnate Lukas Lundin.

Further innovations take the form of an onboard DC electrical grid run by methanol-powered fuel cells, paired with lithium-metal batteries. The industry is under pressure to be seen to be working towards more sustainable, efficient methods of propulsion; few modes of transport can match a 75m superyacht in terms of emissions per passenger. Nevertheless, there’s an argument that the heady development costs of hybrid, fuel cell and electric systems are best swallowed by billionaires so they can ultimately filter down to everyone else. C goes even further with its proposed wave-actuated fins, which can be extended out to generate energy from waves as well as provide additional stabilisation.

Energy saving is very much the vibe about the concept. Those classic lines and dominant superstructure have the added bonus of shielding glazing from direct sunlight, cutting down on the need for artificial cooling. Feadship is also working on moving its processes to ‘low impact’ steel and aluminium, a long-term ambition to source materials that have a much lower carbon footprint. Suggested accommodation is 12 guests in five staterooms and one owner’s stateroom, while a crew of 19 is required to keep all this ship shape and running smoothly.

That’s assuming that someone steps forward with the chutzpah and chequebook to make the Concept C happen. ‘We could start building concept C tomorrow or incorporate any of her sparkling innovations in the design development of a full custom Feadship knowing they are truly functional and buildable,’ the shipyard says. It’s more likely that certain facets of this ocean-going diamond will emerge in future builds as the superrich realise that even they are impacted by the world’s finite resources.

$300M super yacht spotted in San Diego Bay: Who does it belong to?

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A one-of-a-kind super yacht was seen steaming into the San Diego Bay Thursday morning, but who does it belong to?

The San Diego Web Cam livestream caught the moment on video around 9 a.m., showing a 387-foot-long yacht making its way to America’s Finest City.

According to Marine Traffic , a website that tracks ships and vessels as they travel across the globe, the vessel’s name is LAUNCHPAD and is listed as “pleasure craft.”

After further investigation, it appears this specific super yacht was originally commissioned to Russian oligarch Vladimir Potanin, who was listed on multiple sanctions lists . It eventually left the Dutch shipyard it resided in when the sale to its news owner — an American — was approved.

According to Yacht World, the LAUNCHPAD sold for around $300 million. It’s rumored to boast features like a tennis court, a helicopter deck, a private cinema, a gym and deck jacuzzi. The yacht is likely able to host up to 24 guests.

So who is enjoying this luxury super yacht along the coast of San Diego? Here’s a hint: he’s behind the vision of what many now know as the “Metaverse.”

The LAUNCHPAD belongs to none other than Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg — the richest man in all of California and the fourth richest person on the globe, according to Forbes’ World’s Billionaires List .

Why Zuckerberg has ported in San Diego remains unknown, though you may want to keep an eye for a chance to see the mogul in person.

World News | Italian prosecutors open shipwreck and manslaughter investigation into superyacht sinking

Termini Imerese prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed the investigation has been launched, but hasn’t identified a suspect.

“We are only in the initial phase of the investigation. We can’t exclude any sort of development at present,” he told reporters at a news conference.

Cartosio said his team will carefully consider each possible element of responsibility, including those of the Bayesian’s captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision, the yacht’s manufacturer and others.

“For me, it is probable that offences were committed, that it could be a case of manslaughter, but we can only establish that if you give us the time to investigate,” he said.

The main question investigators are focusing on is how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

Initially, civil protection officials said they believe the yacht, which featured a distinctive 246-feet aluminum mast, was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.

Investigators were also asked why the crew was almost entirely saved, except for the chef, while six passengers remained trapped in the hull.

Local official confirmed that most of the bodies recovered were found in the same part of the yacht — on the left side and closer to the surface — suggesting that passengers had sought safety in the cabins where the last air bubbles had formed.

Deputy Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said it was likely that the passengers were asleep, adding that one of the main focus of the investigation is to ascertain whether they were alerted by someone.

Cammarano confirmed that one person was on watch in the cockpit.

Rescuers on Friday brought ashore the last of seven bodies from the sinking of the Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged luxury yacht that went down in a storm near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy early Monday. The sailboat was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers.

The seventh victim was Hannah Lynch, 18, the daughter of Mike Lynch., whose body was recovered Thursday. He had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States. His wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors.

Rescuers struggled for four days to find all the bodies, making only slow headway through the interior of the wreck lying on the seabed 164 feet below the surface.

Prosecutors said the recovery of the Bayesian will be crucial for the investigation, but noted it will be a long and complex process, which will be paid for by the owners.

The other five victims are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef.

Illinois Is Home To The First Non-Alcoholic Brewery In The Midwest

This is a sign of the times!

While we've seen a rise in trends like Dry January , hop-flavored N/A seltzers, and alcohol-free distilled spirits, this Illinois -based brewery is covering new ground here in the Midwest.

Having lived in West Michigan when the craft beer scene was first on the rise I can attest to never having gone thirsty while living in Grand Rapids, MI a.k.a. Beer City USA .

However, with the record number of brewery closures and sales we've seen over the last few years like Open Road in Wayland or Tapistry in Bridgman , it seems like the craft beer bubble is about to burst.

That's why I'm so intrigued by this new concept in Illinois. Sure there are plenty of non-alcoholic beers you can buy off store shelves, but an entire taproom dedicated to N/A  brews? Tell me more!

Located just outside of Chicago in Naperville, Illinois, Go Brewing  is,

...one of the country's first (if not the first) breweries focusing exclusively on non-alcoholic beer and NA beverages.

Launched in 2023 you'll find nearly a dozen N/A brews available in their taproom in addition to online! In fact, last year they sold over $23,000 in online orders, a number they will no doubt crush in 2024. Remember, since there's no alcohol that allows them to sell freely-- in most states.

While I can't say I'm the target audience for Go Brewing , I certainly have many friends and acquaintances who prefer not to imbibe. I commend owners Joe and Heather Chura for creating a space for  everyone. 

You want to grab drinks with friends. You don’t want to wake up feeling like crap. And the two shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.
