The Best Sailing Shoes For The 2024 Season

The Best Sailing Shoes | Life of Sailing

The best sailing shoes are both waterproof and slip-resistant. Outdoor boots are popular, but specialty sailing shoes are available.

Traditional sailing shoes are typically made of suede or similar material and feature a low-profile design and relatively flat soles. Modern sailing shoes are designed for offshore use and made of waterproof synthetic material.

Table of contents

Types of Sailing Shoes

Sailing shoes come in two primary types. These are stylish traditional sailing shoes (which are made of natural materials) and modern waterproof offshore sailing shoes. Both are practical and useful aboard sailboats.

Traditional Sailing Shoes

Traditional sailing shoes have been around for almost a century. These shoes, also known as "yacht shoes," are made from suede leather and are soft and flexible. They're not usually waterproof, but they can be made more water-resistant using chemical treatments.

Traditional sailing shoes are primarily used as a style statement, but they can be quite practical for some sailors. After all, they were designed to be used on boats. They utilize a flat sole that features a unique non-slip texture, which was designed to give sailors traction on a wet deck.

Modern Waterproof Sailing Shoes

Modern waterproof sailing shoes are made from synthetic materials and engineered for traction on wet surfaces. These shoes are preferred by offshore sailing crews who need to stay warm and dry in rough weather conditions.

Sailing Boots

Sailing boots are often used in conjunction with full-body foul weather gear. These boots resemble snow or rain boots, and they're made of a waterproof material such as rubber.

Sailing boots are often reserved for foul weather, as they're heavier and more clumsy than modern lightweight sailing shoes. That said, every offshore sailor should have a set of waterproof boots onboard.

Best Traditional Sailing Shoes

Traditional sailing shoes are practical, stylish, and still widely available. High-quality examples can last for years, and they're a staple of yacht clubs and sailing organizations across the country. Here are four of the best traditional sailboat shoes.

1. Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe

Sperry practically invented the 20th-century boat shoe, and they're still the go-to shoe company for sailors across the world. The Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe  is an excellent introduction to traditional boat shoes.

Sperry's traditional Leeward shoe is a tan leather slip-on deck shoe made of a water-resistant hide. It features a rubber sole, which incorporates the Sperry anti-slip design that's popular across the line.

The design of the shoe is simple, and it's stitched together using thick and sturdy thread for long service life. Its water-resistant treatment makes it easy to clean and quick to dry should it become waterlogged.

This traditional marine shoe is both comfortable and stylish, making it ideal for regattas and dockside events. Despite its looks, the Sperry Leeward shoe is also practical. The Sperry Top-Deck line is popular with sailors and boat owners, as it stands up well to spray and slippery conditions.

2. L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs

L.L. Bean is another household name in traditional boat shoes. While not as ubiquitous as Sperry, L.L. Bean shoes are an excellent choice for traditional sailing footwear.

L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs  are made in the traditional boat shoe style. They're slip-on by design and feature a low-profile sole with a very slight heel. L.L. Bean uses a different sole design philosophy, opting for a non-textured material.

Counterintuitively, the L.L. Bean flat non-textured sole actually has excellent anti-slip characteristics. It's made of sturdy leather that resists sliding on wet decks, and it features slight outsole siphons to increase grip on wet surfaces.

The L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat shoe is constructed with durable yet flexible leather that is comfortable and easy to clean. It features a leather liner inside, which works well with short socks and wears evenly over time.

That said, the leather liner is designed to work with or without socks. This is a plus, as it makes taking the shoe on and off easy after a day on the beach or walking around the deck barefoot.

These shoes feature a lace-up top with leather laces. They can be tied and left in place, as this is a slip-on shoe. The L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe can be worn with or without socks, just like the Sperry mentioned above.

3. J. Crew Classic Leather Boat Shoes

J. Crew produces an affordable and classic-looking set of boat shoes that are ideal for a first set. These shoes are made of suede-like leather, and they feature a non-slip rubber sole with a traditional profile.

J. Crew Classic Leather sailing shoes  follow the stylistic trends of early boat shoes, yet they incorporate some modern materials that make them more practical for use on a sailboat. These include a non-marking rubber sole that's specifically designed to improve traction on wet and dry surfaces.

These J. Crew boat shoes feature leather laces in a way similar to the L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe. Like the L.L. Bean variants, these shoes can be worn with or without socks.

The leather is treated for easy cleaning, and they're hand-stitched for strength and longevity. The laces come through the sides of the shoe through grommets, which helps prevent the leather from wearing or breaking around the entry and exit points.

These classic boat shoes are a perfect first pair, and they're affordable enough to wear frequently. They also function as sailboat shoes, which is a plus as many new "boat shoes" are designed for looks only.

4. Sperry Gold Cup Original Boat Shoe

Sperry Gold Cup boat shoes  are a classic and premium boat shoe. It features the standard Sperry anti-slip sole and durable leather construction for long life and easy cleaning.

Like most standard Sperry shoes, the Gold Cup Original series is designed to be used on a sailboat or yacht. The shoe's design is based on the original Sperry, which was worn by sailors and yacht owners for decades.

Sperry shoe soles are lightly scored and made with a coarse rubber material that resists slip on wet decks. They're excellent for teak and fiberglass decks and add a layer of security to existing non-slip surfaces.

The shoes themselves follow the classic Sperry design philosophy. They're made from a non-suede leather that's water-resistant and dries out quickly, and they feature leather laces fed through 18k gold plated eyelets.

These shoes feature durable stitching that's used to extend their service life. Inside the shoe, a lambskin lining makes it comfortable to wear with or without socks. The Sperry Gold Cup shoe is a high-quality sailing shoe that's ideal for warm conditions.

Best Modern Sailing Shoes

Although modern sailing shoes lack the aesthetic appeal of traditional sailing shoes, they offer the added convenience of modern design and the functionality of synthetic materials. Here are four of the best modern shoes for sailing.

1. Atlantic Heritage Comfort Boat Shoe

The Atlantic Heritage Comfort Boat Shoe  combines traditional styling with modern functionality. It features a suede and stitched appearance and the design of a modern running shoe, and it offers superior support and anti-slip characteristics.

The primary drawback of flat-soled shoes is that they can be uncomfortable, especially if you have foot, back, or knee problems. The Atlantic Heritage shoe eliminates these issues, as it offers the support of a modern shoe.

The primary selling point of the Atlantic Heritage shoe is comfort. It's designed specifically to offer all-day comfort when standing on the deck or walking alongshore. They work just as well on sand and gravel, and they offer elevation in all the right places.

The Atlantic Heritage shoe features a proprietary anti-slip sole, which is designed to provide traction without leaving marks. They stand up to water well, despite the fact that they're not technically waterproof.

2. DLGJPA Lightweight Aqua Water Shoes

The DLGJPA Lightweight Aqua Water shoe  series is a radical departure from what most people would consider a traditional boat shoe. These woven shoes are designed for grip and use in wet conditions.

The Aqua Water shoe series takes a different approach to water resistance. Instead of keeping water out, they're designed to let it flow around and inside of the shoe. The woven body of the shoe dries almost as quickly as it gets wet.

The Aqua Water shoe is a warm-weather shoe designed for wet tropical environments and water sports. They're especially useful for launching boats if you need to get in the water to guide the vessel.

The bottom of the Aqua Water shoe is perforated for quick draining. These shoes are highly breathable and ultralight, making them a comfortable and non-slip option for warm weather sailing.

3. Riomar Deck Driver Stingray Boat Shoe

Are you looking for traditional styling with a modern non-slip grip? The Riomar Deck Driver Stingray  is the perfect combination of style and modern materials for use in wet and dry sailing conditions .

A unique feature of the Riomar Deck Driver is the sole. It features a series of protruding rubber buttons that conform to the shape of the ground for optimal grip.

These shoes are non-marking, which is especially important for boats with polished white fiberglass deck spaces. The shoes are flexible and comfortable and designed to be worn with or without socks.

Riomar is a well-known producer of marine shoes, and the Deck Driver Stingray is the culmination of years of experience making high-quality sailboat shoes. These shoes are ideal if you're looking for an attractive and practical modern sailing shoe.

4. Swims Waterproof Penny Loafer

Here's a unique and modern machine-washable sailing shoe designed for comfort and good looks. The Swims Penny Loafer  is a well-executed take on an old design and an excellent choice for warm-weather sailing.

The Swims Penny Loafer is completely waterproof and designed for use in wet conditions. It's washable and contains antimicrobial materials to stay sanitary even in the worst conditions.

The shoe features a proven traction sole design with scoring and anti-slip compounds. It's ideal for walking around fiberglass or wooden deck and maintains traction when the deck is wet.

These shoes are designed to look like penny loafers, which means they're both stylish and comfortable. They can be worn with or without socks, but they're designed primarily for sockless use.

Swims Waterproof Penny Loafer sailboat shoes are currently available in light blue, gray, brown, black, and dark blue. Two-tone gray and neon green are available, and the rest of the colors feature a close-to-matching sole.

Best Sailboat Boots for Rough Weather

Warm weather and calm conditions aren't the only things that sailors encounter. Thus, it's a good idea to have a set of waterproof sailing boots to accompany your foul weather gear. Here are the three best sailboat boots for less-than-ideal sailing conditions.

1. Xtratuf 6 in Ankle Deck Boots

These modern deck boots are the perfect way to prepare for rough weather onboard a sailboat. They're comfortable and waterproof and slip on easily without any laces.

The lack of laces on these boots is more than just convenience. Laces pose a hazard on a sailboat, as it's easy to get them snagged on a cleat or trip while walking around the deck. The Xtratuf 6 Ankle Deck Boots eliminate this hazard.

Aesthetically, these are attractive boots that go well with foul-weather gear. They're not noticeably larger than standard fishing boots. In fact, they're lower-profile than most foul weather boots. That makes them an excellent choice for fair and inclement weather

These are low boots, as they only reach about halfway up the ankle. They're made of a waterproof rubber material that's comfortable, durable, and easy to clean. Xtratuf sailing boots also feature a flat non-slip sole for traction when moving about the deck.

2. Gill Short Cruising Boots

Here's a traditional sailboat boot that's designed for comfort, safety, and water resistance. These "short" boots are fairly tall and ideal for pairing with the waterproof pants from your foul weather gear.

Gill Short Cruising Boots  are designed specifically for marine use, which makes them ideal for keeping aboard a sailboat. The soles feature a proprietary design that offers durability and superior anti-slip properties.

These boots resemble traditional fishing boots or barn muck boots, but they're designed for waterproof use on slippery surfaces such as the deck of a sailboat.

They're comfortable and easy to clean, and they're a highly affordable option if you don't already have a pair of foul weather waterproof sailing boots.

3. Rugged Shark Great White Deck Boots

Rugged Shark is a household name in sailboat boots, and they produce a line of premium deck boots for foul weather use. These full-size boots are perfect for all sailing weather conditions.

The Rugged Shark Great White deck boot  is a serious heavy-duty deck boot. It's the "real deal," as they say, and this boot offers numerous advantages when the weather gets hazardous (or simply damp and uncomfortable).

These boots are roomy and waterproof, allowing sailors to wear warm insulated socks inside without fear of waterlogging. They work well with standard foul weather gear, and they're high enough to keep water out if the cockpit fills up.

These boots feature an anti-slip sole with corrugated scoring. This anti-slip surface is comparable to traditional deck shoes that date back almost a century. These are proven premium boots with the right combination of durability and flexibility.

Manufacturer:

In the warmer months, sandals are an ideal form of paddling footwear, especially for more casual canoe and kayak trips.

I know from previous experience that US brand Keen make some of the most advanced models of adventure-ready, water-suitable sandals on the market, so I couldn’t wait to slide my feet into a pair of the Drift Creek H2s and get out paddling, to see whether they would perform well enough to claim a place in our round up of the best kayaking shoes currently available.

How did they rate? Read on to find out.

Keen Drift Creek H2

Keen Drift Creek H2 sandals : look and feel

Not everyone is a fan of the sandals look – and I get that – but then again, not everyone has tried on a pair of Keen sandals, because this brand (along with Teva, it’s fair to say) has pretty much redefined the genre, especially when it comes to sandals designed for outdoor pursuits and waterborne adventures.

Unlike myriad other sandals, which have a devastating ability to make anyone who dares to wear them instantly seem extremely uncool, Keen’s Drift Creek H2s bestow most people with a proper adventurous look; you instantly feel like you’re some sort of rafting guide on the Colorado when you put them on.

They’re comfortable too, with a highly supportive midsole that supports your foot on and off the water.

Keen Drift Creek H2

Keen Drift Creek H2 sandals : design and materials

I should start by immediately making clear that the upper of the Drift Creek H2 sandals is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

This is ace for at least two reasons: a) it’s an excellent use of a discarded non-biodegradable product, and b) the synthetic nature of the material means it won’t get sodden with water and become heavy after immersion in water.

In fact, Keen make a big deal about the Drift Creek H2 being waterproof, which always seems a strange thing to say about open sandals – but it’s the water repellency of the fabrics they are talking about.

A mesh tongue extends across the front foot (to keep debris out), and the robust uppers are tightened with a brilliant bungee-and-toggle system, which supplies a good secure fit and makes it very unlikely that you’ll lose one of the sandals, even in the rough and tumble of fast-moving water.

The Drift Creek H2s feature Keen’s signature toe bumper, which has been paired back slightly in recent years (it used to be enormously bulbous) but still supplies excellent protection for your pinkies.

The sandals boast a substantial, shaped EVA insole, which supplies good foot support, and the robust KEEN.FUSION rubber outsoles offer excellent grip on all kinds of wet and slippery surfaces.

As beautifully breezy as sandals are, we all know they have a tendency to get a bit stinky, but the Drift Creeks come infused with Eco Anti-Odor to keep this under control (and they’re washable, too).

Keen Drift Creek H2

On-water  performance

I’ve been wearing the Keen Drift Creek H2 sandals for a variety of paddling, sea rowing, SUPing and shore-based coastal adventures over the summer, and it’s hard not to love them.

They cradle your foot brilliantly, protect your toes from stubbing injuries during put-ins and take-outs, and the outsoles deliver all the underfoot protection and traction you could ask for.

Of course, they’re not perfect. The mesh tongue keeps some sand, grit and small pebbles out, but a degree of debris can and will get into these sandals in certain conditions, which can be uncomfortable.

The open-heel design can leave the back of your feet exposed and open to rubbing on the deck of the boat (depending on your paddling position). And they’re not going to cut the mustard when it comes to keeping your feet warm during winter paddles.

But, overall, when it comes to balancing breathability, functionality, protection and style, the Drift Creek H2s are really top performers.

Supremely breathable, these comfortable but robust sandals are perfect for various paddle sports in the warmer months. Partially made from recycled plastic bottles, the Drift Creeks are lightweight and highly flexible, but still supply the terrific toe and sole protection you would expect from Keen. The lace-lock bungee system enables a seriously secure fit, and the EVA insoles have inbuilt arch support, making them comfortable to wear even if you’re on your feet paddleboarding for hours. The KEEN.FUSION rubber outsole offers excellent grip on slippery surfaces, and great levels of protection for your soles. They’re never going to provide enough warmth for winter use, but for kayaking, rafting, canoeing or SUPing in the summer, the Drift Creeks are a solid choice.

Whether it's your first time out on the water, going laser sailing, or your umpteenth sailing trip, a good pair of sailing shoes is essential to your safety. Designed specifically for use on wet surfaces and slippery conditions. They'll improve traction and keep your feet comfortable during long days on the boat.

In this guide to sailing shoes, we're highlighting the best sailing shoes on the market from top boat shoe brands and offering helpful tips to ensure you find just the right pair. So grab your sailing hats and let the adventure begin.

What Type Of Shoes Is Best For Sailing?

Sailing shoes are designed specifically for wet conditions, such as on a slippery boat deck or wooden dock. While some are fashioned after athletic shoes, others styles are closer to boots or gaiters. Those referred to as boat shoes or deck shoes are typically made with a canvas or salt water resistant leather upper, a non-marking rubber sole, and a slip-on silhouette similar to a loafer.

Do You Wear Socks With Sailing Shoes?

While some people prefer to go sock-free, most prefer to wear socks with their boat shoes. Without them, you risk getting painful rubs and blisters that can quickly ruin your day on the water. Stick with performance socks designed specifically for use in soggy conditions. Slip a pair of low-cut, no-show socks under your boat shoes for a laid-back, European look that doesn't fall short on protection.

What To Look For In Boat Shoes

Sailing shoes are designed for everything from dinghy sailing to deep-sea fishing, so you'll want to shop for styles designed specifically for your intended end-use. Here are a few key product features that make for a great pair:

Non-slip rubber sole

The primary purpose of sailing shoes is to provide traction. Look for pairs with non-slip, non-marking soles that keep you safe in wet, slippery conditions. Some soles feature durability and anti-slip properties.

Performance fabric

While traditionally crafted with leather, most pairs today are made with quick-drying fabrics with added breathability and water resistance.

Mesh construction

Many boating shoes feature strategically-placed mesh panels to improve ventilation and drain away excess water. They'll help keep your feet dry and comfortable all day long.

Adjustable fit

Any good pair of water shoes is designed with laces or adjustable straps for a customizable fit. If you're shopping for kids, stick with simple velcro straps.

Removable insole

Opt for a pair with fully removable insoles for easy cleaning and faster dry times. Slip them out in between uses so they can fully dry.

Antimicrobial treatments

The best boat shoes are treated with innovative antimicrobial treatments that minimize foot odors, prevent mildew growth, and keep fungal infections at bay.

Avoid flip-flops and open-toe shoes as they are an injury risk, thanks to the number of deck fittings on most yachts.

The 10 Absolute Best Boat Shoes for Men

horizontal black line

Cutting to the chase is the OG design that has never looked out of style and definitely never will. In fact, we believe that every man should try on this seaworthy style that has remained so popular for decades because they're just so comfy, you'll want to wear them all the time. The leather, for instance, is meticulously hand-sewn for enhanced durability and graceful aging. As you slip your feet into them, you'll also find yourself reveling in the secure, customized fit provided by the signature 360° lacing system. The tried-and-true outsole with razor-cut wave-sipping also offers unrivaled traction for true seafarers.

What we love most about these OGs is that they now come with an OrthoLite insole to envelop your underfoot in comfort and provide shock absorption to each step. Coupled with the inclusion of an EVA heel cup that adds an extra layer of cushioning, we were even able to travel in these shoes for hours.

A wise word, however: while we found Sperry's boat shoes effortlessly easy to break in, they do tend to stretch ever so slightly with each wear. Therefore, we warn against sizing up here for these.

These boat shoes combine timeless aesthetics with modern features, and we were impressed by both their everyday performance and luxurious feel. Firstly, the smooth and plush linings caress your feet while ensuring a snug fit, and the fully cushioned footbed blessed with OrthoLite® high rebound foam offers unparalleled all-day comfort and flexibility. In our walking test, we found that each step is cushioned and supported by their footbed, ensuring our feet stay fatigue-free.

In addition, the lightweight and durable EVA sole provides optimal traction and stability, making these boat shoes perfect for both on-deck activities and casual outings. All in all, we love how you can confidently navigate various terrains with ease in these while still embracing a timeless summer style.

If you're new to the boat shoe game and don't want to quite commit to Sperry-levels of preppiness, these are a happy medium. We were blown away by how comfortable and athletic they are with the look of a sneaker, but the level of ventilation, structure, and durability you need to hit the beach. The fabric also has both moisture-wicking and odor-reducing properties to keep your feet cool and dry. The brand's proprietary knit feels silky smooth on the skin and is breathable so you'll stay fresh throughout the journey.

Designed for everyday wear, The Tree Skipper's cushioned sole really impressed us with its comfort as well as flexibility that mimics the natural movement of your feet. Style-wise, we love that whether you're running errands or exploring new horizons, these shoes will nicely fit into your wardrobe.

Sperry Authentic Original Float Boat Shoe

Authentic Original Float Boat Shoe

It's no secret you'd be seeing Sperry at least a couple of times in this guide, but to those who have yet to discover their water shoe styles, we recommend checking them out. Our Fashion Director says that these are perfect for going in the water and enjoying getting your feet wet, yet protecting against rocks.

In our testing, we were impressed by its strong grip, courtesy of the brand's non-marking outsole with molded Wave-Siping™ tech. The holes placed on the upper and the sides are, you guessed it, perfect for draining the water out as well as for breathability. Fit-wise, we love its snugness due to the dynamic upper, but over time it does get loosened up a bit so we recommend sizing down a half.

Cole Haan 4.ZERØGRAND Regatta Boat Shoe

4.ZERØGRAND Regatta Boat Shoe

Cole Haan again hits it out of the park on everyday comfort and versatility with these modern, sporty-looking boat shoes that are suitable for life on and off the water. Featuring a breathable mesh upper, these shoes offer excellent ventilation and quick drying capabilities. In fact, the nylon-based mesh not only keeps your feet comfortable but also breaks in soon as you slip in your feet to take the guesswork out of the fit. The Anchortrac™ outsole, on the other hand, is specifically engineered to keep you steady on your feet, whether you're on a boat or exploring the beach.

And, worried about water getting in? Don't be. These are also water shoes with a drainage system to accelerate water removal—no more soggy shoes slowing you down. And the brand's signature GRANDFØAM footbed absorbs shock and provides rebound with each step to keep your feet refreshed and energetic throughout your voyage.

SWIMS Braided Lace Loafer

Braided Lace Loafer

These are driving loafers moonlighting as boat shoes, and we love it. Featuring a ventilation and drainage system on the upper and sides, these shoes ensure optimal breathability and moisture management, making them perfect for swimming, pool parties, and generally any summer activity that involves water. The breathable fabric wicks away sweat and moisture as well while being able to withstand light rain or wet conditions.

In our experience of wearing water shoes, we pay extra attention to the outsoles to see if they're actually grippy, and the non-marking rubber here really impressed us with specially crafted treads that enhance grip and stability on slippery surfaces. Offering a true-to-size, no-breaking-in-needed fit, we recommend these boat shoes for avid travelers, city commuters, or outdoorsy adventurers in general who like to get wet.

Higley Tie

Set sail for summer style with these Clarks boat shoes that are as close to going barefoot as you can get without, well, going barefoot. Crafted with a breathable textile upper, the Higley Tie allows your feet to stay cool and fresh, perfect for those scorching summer days. We love how the outer of the shoes naturally contours to the shape of our foot, ensuring a customized fit that feels like an extension of yourself.

But what sets these boat shoes apart is their high rebound footbed that cushions each step while absorbing impact and shock to relieve pressure, and we found them indeed great for walking and standing all day. Additionally, the footbed is treated with Cleansport NTXTM technology, offering odor control and promoting good foot health.

The upper of these boat shoes is also worth a shoutout. Not only does it exude a classic sophistication to your look, but the breathable fabric linings inside also ensure optimal airflow, keeping your feet cool and comfortable throughout the day.

We also love how versatile they are. Whether you're strolling along the shoreline or navigating the urban jungle, these boat shoes effortlessly adapt to any setting and pair very well with shorts or cuff jeans. Best Sailing Shoes | Yachting Shoes for Men and Women

Are you heading on deck and need the best sailing shoes to ensure grip? You’ve come to the right place. I have tested a variety of boat shoes for sailing over the years so I know just what to look for in a pair of boating shoes.

There are a variety of different types of yachting shoes, so it’s all about finding a pair that will suit your lifestyle best. And if you were worried about how they will look, you actually get extremely versatile boating shoes these days that can work for both sailing the seven seas and waltzing across the land.

Best Shoes for Sailing

If you are looking for the best shoes for a yacht, then you need to know exactly what traits they need to be suitable for sailing. Here’s exactly what you need to look for when you’re in search of the best shoes for sailing:

They need to be suitable for the deck of a boat, so having non-marking rubber soles is a must. You need to have enough grip to stop your from sliding, but they can’t be dark rubber or they will cause skid marks and damage the surface of the boat.

While you can choose between a sailing boot, sneaker, deck shoe, or slip slop, there needs to be some sort of non-marking grip to make them appropriate for boat wear .

Men’s Sailing Shoes

If you are looking for men’s sailing shoes or men’s deck shoes, then you’ve come to the right place. These are some of the best shoes for sailing boats on the market currently.

Alibress Men’s Water Shoes Lightweight Quick Dry Aqua Beach Shoes

These Alibress men’s water shoes are ideal for sailing on the high seas because they have rubber that allows you to stick to the boat, but it is light in color so will not mark the boat. They are also lightweight, which means they won’t weigh you down while you are trying to make your way across the yacht.

Their quick dry characteristic also makes them ideal for wearing onboard a boat because even if they get soaked, they won’t stay that way for long. Apart from wearing them onboard your yacht, you can also wear them on the beach and while hopping across rocks.

Cheston Men’s Women’s Barefoot Quick Dry Aqua Water Shoe

These unisex Cheston boat shoes are great for those who like to feel like they are barefoot but have in fact got shoes on. These shoes dry extremely quickly and have thin rubber soles that allow you to stand surdy on deck.

The best part of these shoes is that they come available for both men and women. Their easy close strap also make these a great choice for those who don’t enjoying tying their shoes or feel that it is a waste of time.

Sperry Men’s Authentic Original 2-Eye Boat Shoe

If you really want to look the part of a yacht owner, then these Sperry boat shoes are the real deal, and the perfect shoe for someone spending time onboard but still wanting to look good. While they may not have the quick drying benefits of water shoes, they are authrnetic and look the part.

Their thick white rubber soles allow you to stick to the deck while still providing no chance of marking the deck. If you want to easily waltz around the boat while looking swarve doing it, then these shoes just might be for you.

Columbia Men’s Slack Tide Slip PFG Boat Shoe

These Colombia men’s slack tide boat shoes are ideal for those that like to wear boat shoes that look like sneakers. They are plane black with white soles, ideal for wearing aboard a boat or yacht. These are not water shoes so they don’t dry quickly, their real strength lies in sticking to the deck rather than slipping.

If you are looking for the ideal deck shoes for sailing, then you can’t go wrong with this good looking pair of shoes for sailing.

Women’s Shoes for Yachting

If you’re looking for the best boat shoes for women then you’ve come to the right place. I have personally tried and tested a handful of these great sailing boat shoes and these are a couple of my favorites.

yachting sandals

Hey Dude Women’s Wendy Women’s Lace-Up Loafers

These women’s water loafers look just like the sailboat shoes we’ve come to expect. They are laced up, giving them an extra layer of sophistication which is ideal for sailing a boat. Not only do they look great but they’re incredibly practical too.

Their white rubber soles mean they will provide you with a level of stickiness (for want of a better word), that will keep you grounded to the boat.

DLGJPA Women’s Quick Drying Water Shoes

These DLGJPA Women’s Quick Drying Water Shoes are the perfect fit for women who like to get their hands dirty on the deck. If you happen to get completely soaked while sailing a yacht, these quick-dry shoes will dry out in no time.

They are easy to fasten with their pull-tight laces and they are fitted with a white rubber sole ideal for gripping to a boat. They come in a variety of colors so choose a pair that will go best with your boat outfits.

Roxy Women’s Ahoy Slip-on Boat Shoe Sneaker

These Roxy Women’s Ahoy Slip-on Boat Shoe Sneaker are great if you plan on being on a boat, but not for ladies who plan on sailing the boat themselves. This is because they’re a little too fashionable for heavy-duty sailing activities.

Their rubber soles allow them to grip to the deck nicely, but because they slip on and off rather easily, they are not suited to any kind of athletic activity. Let’s just say these are not water shoes for sailing.

Columbia Women’s Slack Water PFG Slip Boat Shoe

These Columbia Women’s Slack Water PFG Slip Boat Shoes have a casual sneaker look but are really rather practical. They slip on an off, but will not come off during rigorous activity. Their white rubber soles also provide you with ample grip, allowing you to make your way across the deck with relative ease.

COMPARISON TABLE – THE BEST SAILING SHOES

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SAILING SHOES

Type of sailing.

Equipment and clothing that you require for sailing very much depend on what type of sailing you’ll be doing. Whether it’s dinghy racing or classic cruising, your footwear needs to be right.

DINGHY SAILING

Dinghy sailing is probably the wettest kind of sailing (unless you’re into extreme performance yachts!) and so your dinghy sailing shoes need to cope. Dinghy sailing also involves shifting your body and weight quickly so clumpy shoes just aren’t going to cut it.

To keep your feet warm and easy to move in wet conditions, most dinghy sailors wear wetsuit booties. Made from neoprene , these types of boots come in different thicknesses depending on what temperatures you’ll be sailing in. Some dinghy sailing booties also have reinforced top sections so they don’t wear out when you’re feet are under the straps.

Cruising tends to be a much more laid back affair than dinghy sailing and shoe choice is much larger. From deck shoes to sailing wellies, your footwear choice will depend on your boat, the conditions and whether you need to go on deck or not.

The main consideration for cruising sailors is a non-marking sole. Black rubber marks are a big no-no on any boat! Cruising shoes should be reasonable waterproof in case waves come over, but also grippy, comfortable and easy to clean.

While many cruising yachts can also race, the act of racing is a more extreme form of sailing. What does that mean? It means that you’ll probably have a lot more water washing along the decks and into the cockpit.

Yachts may also be more heeled over when racing than other types of sailing so it’s easier to slip. If you want to do some racing or will be sailing a racing yacht, grippy soles are a must. Sailing shoes should also be waterproof and with a low-profile so you can move quickly should you need to.

LOCATION AND WEATHER

Will you be sailing on a lake? At sea? In big waves? In flat water? Will it be cold? Hot? Tropical? No one wants cold feet right?

If you’re sailing in a cold water area, you should plan your shoes for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Why? Because when the wind crosses water, it will often cool to the temperature of the water. Even on a hot, sunny day, sailing can get chilly if the water is cool.

In cold weather, numb toes can be a real problem. If you’re planning on cold water sailing then remember to leave room in sailing shoes for warm, thick socks.

On the flip side, if you’ll be sailing in warm seas and hot sun, you’ll need breathable sailing shoes that won’t leave your feet sweaty. Shows made from leather, mesh or GORE-TEX are usually very breathable.

Sailing shoes come in all sorts of materials, mainly suited to conditions and environment. Dinghy sailing shoes need to allow you to swim in them should you capsize, hence being made out of neoprene. The thicker the neoprene, the warmer they’ll keep your feet.

Other sailing shoes can be made out of rubber or plastic. These materials are waterproof, making them good for cold water sailing. Rubber isn’t breathable though, so for warmer weather, leather or breathable synthetics are a good choice.

Non-marking soles are crucial for any type of boat. A passenger or crew member with a marking sole is liable to be made to walk the plank. Luckily, it’s hard to find marking soles in the sailing shoe industry. All the sailing shoes featured in our reviews have non-marking soles.

Grippy soles are important as decks and cockpits can get very slippery. However, deep tread isn’t necessarily good and can pick up stones and gravel ashore which then scratch the gelcoat and wood on a boat.

Neoprene booties usually have reinforced soles for longevity and extra comfort when walking up dinghy ramps. Cheaper booties might lack this feature and could wear out much faster but are great for beginners .

Uncomfortable shoes are terrible so it seems like a no-brainer to buy comfortable sailing shoes. But there’s often more to it than ordinary shoes.

For instance, will you always be wearing socks? Sometimes, you might need to get out on deck quickly when you have to reef a sail . You may not have time to put socks on, so can you still wear and walk in your shoes without them?

Do you find shoes often rub? If so, finding shoes with a softer opening might be a good idea. Blisters can get infected in saltwater environments, especially if you’re sailing in the sub-tropics and tropics.

Best Men’s Boat Shoes: 6 Styles for Every Sailor

  • Steve Walburn
  • March 23, 2023

The best men's boat shoes for sailing are designed to meet specific use cases. Here are 6 top sellers that cover the waterfront with both style and substance.

yachting sandals

Picking the best men’s boat shoe for your type of sailing doesn’t have to be complicated, but often it is. On one hand, you can go with a basic two-eyelet deck shoe, or topsider, as it is sometimes called. On the other hand, well, everything else.

In sailing footwear, the variety of form, function, and price can be staggering. Options range from bottom-dollar canvas loafers that have all the integrity of cheese cloth, to designer deck shoes that cost more than some chart plotters.

In between are myriad options to choose from. Some ofd the best boat shoes focus on technical performance, while others emphasize style. There are deck shoes specifically built for everything from dinghy racing to offshore passage-making.

No matter your need, it’s important to first define your use-case priorities. A Vendée Globe competitor probably isn’t going to be well served with a pair of discount leather topsiders. Just like a dinghy cruiser doesn’t need a high-dollar racing trainer.

Whatever your sailing category, focus first on fit, traction, and drainage. If your feet are often wet, look past all-leather deck shoes and lean into mesh shoes with synthetic uppers and, preferably, integral drainage.

If you are frequently moving about the deck, such as while crewing on a race boat, stability and traction should be a top consideration.

With these points in mind, here are six highly rated men’s boat shoes that will cover most sailing applications from deck to dock.

6 of the best men’s boat shoes

Chatham deck ii g2.

Specifications | Sizes: 6 through 15 with some half sizes | Colors: blue, chestnut, chocolate, walnut | Construction: Leather

Reasons to Buy:

– Classic two-eye deck shoe. – Good shock absorption. – Lace-up design for fit and stability.

Reasons to Avoid:

– Premium price. – Doesn’t dry as fast as a synthetic shoe. – Sizes run large.

When it comes to the traditional two-eye deck shoe, nobody does it better than Chatham. The G2 collection is their top-of-the-line topsider for both men and women and is one of the best boat shoes on the market.

It features waxed walnut leather for water and stain resistance, along with waxed thread and non-corrosive eyelets.

Some of the best moccasin-style men’s boat shoes can feel a little flat-footed. That’s why the Deck II G2 incorporates proprietary cushioning and anti-bacterial insoles for all-day comfort. The shoe also is backed by a 2-year guarantee.

And, of course, the siped rubber sole is just what you need to stay on deck in slippery conditions.

Sperry Men’s Billfish 3-Eyelet Boat Shoe

Specifications | Sizes: 8 through 13 | Colors: Tan Beige, Dark Tan | Construction: Leather with mesh panels

– Affordable price. – More cushioning than most 2-eye topsiders. – Good ventilation and drainage.

– May be too bulky for warmest climates. – Some buyers warn of quality control issues

If you need more support than a two-eye shoe but still want the moccasin style, take a look at Sperry’s Billfish boat shoe .

It incorporates an extra eyelet on top of a beefier platform for sneaker-like performance in a grippy, non-marking boat shoe. And it still has the classic moccasin look.

As the name suggests, the Billfish is built with fishermen in mind. But it’s also an excellent choice for sailors who need extra cushioning and stability while moving about on deck.

Despite its bulk, the Billfish keeps weight down by incorporating mesh side panels. This feature also promotes moisture wicking and minimizes foot odor.

The siped rubber sole is cupped around the rand. That means the grippy surface extends up and around the outstep, instep, and heel for better traction on angled or uneven surfaces.

This shoe might feel too beefy for the tropics, but in most temperate climates, it’s a great buy from the inventor of the original deck shoe.

Decathlon Tribord Sailing Boat Shoes 500

Specifications | Sizes UK 5.5 through UK 12 | Colors: Dark Chocolate | Construction: Leather

– Very affordable. – Traditional topsider style.

– Available only in one color. – Stiffer and not as well made as pricier models.

It is hard to go wrong with a pair of leather topsiders for under £40. While the Tribord 500 might not lead the field in a comparison of the best men’s boat shoes, Decathlon leads the way in affordable water sports gear and apparel with its Tribord sailing brand.

The Tribord 500 boat shoe is a traditional two-eyelet topsider with the same leather uppers and lacing as found on higher-priced brands, but at a greatly reduced price.

These are shoes you can use and abuse for as long as they last and then dispose of or donate without feeling guilty.

If you are seeking ultimate stability, arch support, and performance, perhaps look elsewhere. But if you want a budget-friendly boat shoe that will do what you need without breaking the bank, then look no further.

Buy from Decathlon

Helly Hansen Skagen F-1 Offshore

Specifications | Sizes: 7 through 13 | Colors: Phantom EBO (white), Racer Blue, Navy | Construction: Mesh upper with EVA midsole.

– Advanced technical performance. – Good foot protection. – Comfort and stability.

– High price.

Well known for its high-performance clothing, Helly Hansen makes an equally big splash with technical footwear for boaters. The Skagen F-1 Offshore should be in any discussion of the best men’s boat shoes.

This is a sneaker-style shoe designed with ocean sailors in mind. The synthetic mesh upper is breathable and lightweight, and it is built on a thick, rugged sole for cushioning and foot protection.

The removable EVA insole is treated with antibacterial technology to reduce foot odor and fungi, which will keep you comfortable on long passages.

At first glance one might mistake the Skagen F-1 for a running shoe, except that it features an aggressive non-slip sole designed specifically for working on a wet deck.

It is also one of the best-looking sailing shoes on the market, though at a premium price.

Buy from Helly Hansen

Musto Dynamic Pro II Adapt

Specifications | Sizes: 7 through 12 | Colors: Vallarta Blue, True Navy, Musto PLA (white/blue) | Construction: Mesh with TPU overlay

– Designed for racing. – TPU welded frame for support. – Good shock absorption

– May be too much shoe for casual sailing. – Expensive.

Serious racers need a serious shoe, and Musto’s Dynamic Pro II performs from heel to toe and everywhere in between.

The unique lacing system is elasticated to snug the shoe against the top of your foot, ensuring a comfortable custom fit.

A breathable mesh upper promotes drainage and reduces weight. The mesh is reinforced by a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) welded overlay to protect and stabilize your foot. That TPU frame also extends over the toe box for extra protection.

OluKai Moku Pae

Specifications | Sizes: 7 through 15 | Colors: Multiple shades of blue, white, and gray | Construction: Lined mesh

– Great aesthetic. – Collapsible heel for slip-on ease. – Non-marking and good traction.

– Might not be as stable as high-performance trainers.

Olukai is a brand more often associated with Hawaii-inspired sandals than sailing shoes. But their Moku Pae model brings the same Aloha vibe to a serious boating tread.

Like all of the best men’s boat shoes, it is as comfortable and stylish off the water as on a boat. A full mesh upper and stretch tongue with no-tie laces add to the contemporary aesthetic.

The collapsible heel make the Moku Pae both a shoe and slide, depending on your mood. But this footwear is not built only for style points.

An EVA midsole enhances comfort, and Olukai’s wet-grip rubber sole and tread pattern provide sure footing on deck.

The Moku Pae is available in a range of colors and sizes, and it tends to accommodate wide feet better than many traditional boat shoes.

History of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Foundation of yuzhno-sakhalinsk.

The Russians first visited Sakhalin Island in 1742. In 1805, the Russian-American Company sent Adam Johann von Krusenstern, a Russian admiral and explorer, to Sakhalin to hoist the Russian flag on the island. Officially, neither Russia nor Japan claimed Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. In 1855, a treatise on friendship and the border was signed in Shimoda, which marked the beginning of diplomatic relations between Russia and Japan. According to it, Sakhalin remained jointly owned by the two countries.

The settlement of Sakhalin by Russians was mainly due to exiled convicts. In 1869, Sakhalin was officially declared a place of exile and hard labor. In 1875, the St. Petersburg Treaty was signed between the Russian Empire and Japan, according to which Sakhalin completely went to Russia and the Kuril Islands - to Japan.

In 1881, according to the order of the military governor of the Primorsky region, Major Vladimir Yantsevich was appointed head of exiles in South Sakhalin. He received the following instructions: “For the settlement of those who are finishing their terms of hard labor, a place that is quite convenient for arable farming should be chosen. The selected site, if possible along the main road from south to north, should be planned, divided into sections and, as a new settlement, named by some permanent name.”

In 1883, Yantsevich applied for the approval of the names of four new villages founded in the south of Sakhalin: Solovyovskoe, Mitsulskoe, Vladimirovka (future Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk), and Vlasovskoe. In 1885, 57 people lived in Vladimirovka, in 1895 - 130 people. In 1897, there were 150 residential and commercial buildings here: a church, a school, a post office, a hospital, a mill, trade shops, a number of government buildings, and a lot of residential log houses.

More historical facts…

Japanese period in the history of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

In 1905, after the defeat of the Russian Empire in the Russo-Japanese War, according to the Treaty of Portsmouth, part of Sakhalin south of the 50th parallel was ceded to the Japanese Empire and became the Karafuto Prefecture. The northern part of Sakhalin remained under the control of the Russian Empire.

In 1908, Vladimirovka was renamed Toyohara (“bountiful plain”). In 1915, the settlement received the status of a town. The Japanese made their own plan for the development of the town with a clear rectangular planning system with the direction of streets along the railway and perpendicular to it.

The building density was high, as a result, a significant number of residential buildings were without outbuildings, sheds and other ancillary buildings, as well as yards. On the outskirts of the town there was a well-maintained park with an artificial reservoir. In 1920, the population of Toyohara was 14,176 people, in 1935 - 28,459.

On February 11, 1945, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill signed an agreement in Yalta on the conditions for the USSR’s entry into the war against Japan. Among the conditions were the return of South Sakhalin to the USSR and the annexation of the Kuril Islands. In August 1945, Soviet troops entered Toyohara.

This is what Toyohara looked like from the words of Dmitry Kryukov, head of the civil administration of South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, who arrived in the town in September 1945: “The town mainly consists of wooden buildings. The houses are adjacent to each other, timber-frame, plastered. Many of them look good, but they are cold.” The majority of the population were Japanese and Koreans.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk - the capital of Sakhalin Oblast

On February 2, 1946, Yuzhno-Sakhalin Oblast was formed on the territory of South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. On June 4, 1946, Toyohara became its administrative center. It was renamed Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (“South Sakhalin City”).

On January 2, 1947, Yuzhno-Sakhalin Oblast was liquidated and its territory was included in Sakhalin Oblast, a separate region of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On April 18, 1947, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk became its administrative center.

In the spring of 1947, the mass repatriation of the Japanese began. By August 1, 1947, 124,308 people left Sakhalin, almost half of the local Japanese. During 1947-1949, about 400 thousand people were brought to Sakhalin from the central regions of Russia, Primorye and the Far East. By 1949, only 2,682 Japanese remained on Sakhalin - those who managed to obtain a Soviet passport. The Koreans from Sakhalin were not forcibly evicted, so most of them stayed. In 1959, the population of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was 85,510 people.

In subsequent years, the appearance of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk changed again - the frame houses built by the Japanese were demolished. Today, except for the railway and some buildings of that time turned into museums, almost nothing reminds of the Japanese period in the history of this city.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk - Features

Sakhalin Oblast is the only region in Russia located entirely on the islands. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk stands at some distance from the sea coast, about 25 km from the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Chekhov Peak (1,045 m), one of the highest peaks of Sakhalin, rises to the north-east of the city. Locals call the city simply Yuzhnyy.

Sakhalin Island is part of the temperate monsoon zone. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is located on a plain surrounded by hills, due to which its climate has certain peculiarities. In summer, it can be very hot in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and in winter, due to the lack of wind, severe frosts. The coldest month is January with an average daily temperature of minus 12.2 degrees Celsius, the warmest month is August with an average daily temperature of plus 17.3 degrees Celsius. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is equated to the regions of the Far North.

The city is located in an earthquake-prone area. The probability of strong earthquakes is relatively high. The distance from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Moscow is 9,140 km by road and 6,640 km in a straight line.

The majority of the population is Russian, but the proportion of Koreans is also high (about 20%). Out of 43 thousand Sakhalin Koreans, most of them live in the capital of the region. In the city you can also find representatives of the indigenous peoples: Nivkhs, Ainu and Oroks, but their number is very small.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is the largest transport hub on Sakhalin. Anton Chekhov Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport offers regular flights to such cities as Vladivostok, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Moscow, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Seoul (South Korea), Sapporo (Japan), Tokyo (Japan).

In Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, there is a high level of air pollution due to the high motorization of the population and the location of the city in the valley, which slows down the dispersion of harmful substances.

Today, it is one of the dynamically developing cities of the Far East, the production and intellectual center of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Oil and natural gas production, as well as their processing, are the most important components of the local economy.

This is one of the most visited cities in the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is often visited by cruise ship passengers (mostly Japanese citizens). Restaurants of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk offer dishes of Russian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Uzbek, Georgian, Italian cuisines.

The architecture of the period of the Karafuto Prefecture gives a special flavor to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Today, in the city there are about 40 objects of cultural heritage of this period. In the future, tourism should become the basis for the economic development of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Special thanks to Vladislav Yarowind for the photos of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Main Attractions of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local Lore - the central museum of Sakhalin Oblast founded in 1896. It is housed in a very picturesque Japanese building constructed in the Imperial Crown Style in 1937. Its diverse expositions are devoted to nature, history of the indigenous peoples of the islands, culture and development of Sakhalin. Kommunisticheskiy Avenue, 29.

Sports and Tourist Complex “Gornyy Vozdukh” (“Mountain Air”) - a ski resort and sports complex, existing, according to one version, since the days of the Japanese Karafuto Prefecture (1905-1945). Today, it is one of the most dynamically developing ski resorts in the Far East of Russia.

The unique location of the complex - in the center of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk - allows guests to find themselves in the world of winter sports in just a few minutes. The ski resort offers 10 slopes of various difficulty levels for both beginners and professionals. Their total length is over 23 km. The ski season lasts from December to the end of April.

It is one of the main organizers of excursion tours in Sakhalin Oblast: sports, excursion, business tourism, as well as ecological tourism. The complex has a network of hiking and cycling routes. There are also restaurants and cafes here.

Museum and Memorial Complex “Pobeda” (“Victory”) - a square with a cultural and educational center, where you can find historical expositions dedicated to the Russian-Japanese and World War II. A T-34-85 tank is installed on a pedestal in front of the building. Pobedy Avenue, 1.

Sakhalin Regional State Art Museum - the only art museum in Sakhalin Oblast with over 11 thousand works of art. Museum of the Book of Anton Chekhov “Sakhalin Island” . This museum is dedicated to Anton Chekhov’s trip to Sakhalin in 1890, as a result of which he wrote the book “Sakhalin Island”. Here you can find the following collections: “Painting”, “Graphics”, “Written Sources”, “Photo Materials”, “Numismatics/Phaleristics”, “Household Items, Arts and Crafts”, “Sculpture”. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Park of Culture and Rest named after Yuri Gagarin - the most beautiful recreational area of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk founded in the Japanese period of the city’s history in 1906. In 1968, when the famous cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin died in a jet crash, the park was renamed in his honor. Today, this place attracts visitors with its amazing landscapes and an abundance of entertainment. Sakura blooms here in spring. Detskaya Street, 1.

Resurrection Cathedral - the first church in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk built in the 1990s. This one-domed cathedral in the pseudo-Russian style looks surprisingly graceful and is located in the immediate vicinity of Gagarin Park. Svyatitelya Innokentiya Boulevard, 3k1.

Cathedral of the Nativity . The height of this church, consecrated in 2016, is 77 m, which is why it effectively dominates the surrounding landscape. Accommodating up to 1,000 people, it is built in the Novgorod style with a gilded dome surrounded by four bright blue ones. Inside, you can admire the five-tiered iconostasis in the Russian style, decorated with 98 icons. The outer walls are decorated with mosaics created in Jerusalem. Ilarion Troitsky Street, 1.

Chekhov Peak . Several picturesque mountain peaks are located in the vicinity of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The highest one (1,045 m) is named after the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov. The trip to the top takes several hours. From the height of Chekhov Peak you can admire the city itself, the waters of Aniva Bay and the Sea of Okhotsk. On a cloudless day, you can even see the northern tip of the Japanese island of Hokkaido. There is a small Japanese temple at the top of the peak.
