McGruer of Clynder Gareloch One Design (GOD) for sale in Rhu United Kingdom
Miles Stratton Marine Sales Ltd
Rhu United Kingdom
Make & Model
McGruer of Clynder Gareloch One Design (GOD)
MEASUREMENTS
Description.
This is a unique opportunity to own a bit of history as these fine McGruer built, classic Gareloch One Design racing yachts reach their 100 year!
They sail as a class and "Zoe" is looking for a new owner to enjoy her and the unique camaraderie that goes with the fleet. As an owner you will be part of history,
Gareloch One Design - Zoe / No.10
- Zoe has had a new paint job professionally carried out by Miller Marine. - A cradle comes with the boat, which is part of the local GTA trailer association. This means she can be taken home if you have the space. - She is in ready to sail/race condition with all necessary equipment to meet the class sailing rules.
Gareloch One Design history
The fact that the Gareloch One Design class is still complete and active after 99 years of sailing belies a turbulent history of migration from home waters after the invasion of the Norwegian Dragons – introduced to British waters by Clyde owners. At various times the class has been active on the Gareloch, the Firth of Forth and at Aldeburgh in Suffolk.
In the 1950’s the single-mindedness of John G.D. Henderson – whose family have been intimately involved with the class from its conception to the present day – brought about the return of the migrants from all points to the waters of their birth. That labour of love, together with further tender loving care and restoration by local boatbuilders over the ensuing 50 odd years has ensured the survival of these delicate and beautiful boats with a tough will to survive – and an endearing place in the social structure of the local sailing scene.
It is hard to believe that boats built down to a price – less than £160 – should have lasted so well. It says something about the skills and quality of workmanship and materials available almost 100 years ago.
The first mention of a proposed class in the minutes of the Gareloch Yacht club is October 22nd 1923 and by April 1924 the first boat afloat – Athene – was being trial sailed. At the club’s opening regatta of 3rd June 1924 the first batch of ten boats – Galatea, Athene, Dione, Ceres, Halcyone, Thalia, Iris, Hermes, Thia and Zoe – were racing, the owners having drawn lots for their boats in the interest of fairness.
Reputedly in the space of only 6 weeks, McGruers built 5 further boats to the same design but known as the Royal Forth Yacht Club – Spray (now Luna), Cockelroy (now Zephyrus), Fintra (now Catriona), Jean (now Circe) and Rosemary II (now Teal). The 16th boat – Juno – was built in 1928, now a mere youngster of 95.
There was some come and go between the Clyde and Forth fleets during the early years and, of course, team racing for the Barge Cup from 1934. But by 1936 on the Gareloch and 1937 on the Forth, the Dragon class began to take over.
In 1937 most of the Forth fleet was purchased – along with Iris and Athene – from the Gareloch, by members of Aldeburgh Yacht Club; the ideal answer to their search for a reasonably priced class to replace their ageing Sibbick designed Whitewings. Luna, Catriona, Thalia, Athene, Iris, Juno and Circe raced as a class on the Alde 1937-39 and 1945-1954 and finally in 1955 minus Athene. At the end of the 1955 season they were transported back to McGruers to begin the almost complete regrouping of the class in home waters.
Appropriately perhaps, when the Henderson family boat of old, Iris, was returned from Aldeburgh in 1957, the class was complete for the first time on the Gareloch.
Since 1957 all 16 boats have been based on the Gareloch, where they have given enjoyment, keen racing and pride of ownership to yachtsmen of all ages. The last time the whole fleet raced was in 1984, but most years see around 10 boats afloat with a good turn out at the first race of the season. Regular events are the matches against the Howth 17 Class from Dublin, Fairy Class from Belfast and HMS Neptune from the Faslane Submarine Base, as well as the Yvonne Armstrong Memorial Trophy which is raced for by local teams of cadets. Finally there is the Gareloch World Championship held in late July for the 50th Anniversary Cup, which was presented by the RNCYC in 1974.
The notes above were originally compiled by Iain McAllister
Join the class
A great opportunity has arisen for anyone who wants to own a lovely historical sailing yacht.
These elegant yachts were built by the famous McGruers of Clynder, 99 years ago. They still race as a one design class on Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons, right through summer on their Gareloch home waters. At other times they may be seen cruising the Clyde and local lochs.
The fleet is so accommodating that beginners can buy a boat and be taught sailing by members of the class. Gareloch One designs are the perfect platform to learn the skills of sailing and racing. Being easy to sail the skills are learnt quickly and before you know it you will be trading paces in this tactical sport.
The fleet owners and crews organise great social events which span the generations. Whether you are a young aspiring 8 year old or a canny 80 something these is fun to be had. The class has endured due to it's inclusive ethos and all are welcome.

The Classic 1988 Feadship Ice Bear is up for bid with Boathouse Auctions. Well kitted out for ... [+] sportfishing, she is also a luxurious superyacht.
In 1988, a beautiful new Feadship yacht was built at the Dutch shipyard for Jim Moran. He named it Gallant Lady . Moran, an automotive entrepreneur, would go on to build scores of yachts, seven of which were Feadships. All of his Feadships shared the name Gallant Lady.
The fourth Feadship build in the Gallant Lady sequence, this particular edition gained not only length but also in detail far beyond her predecessors. Built with a relatively flat shear and raised bow to the main deck level, the most notable design detail would prove the vertical glass rimming the observation deck.
Ice Bear is a true sportfishing yacht, as illustrated by the two fixed fighting chairs backed up by ... [+] a gallery sofa for spectators, and a raising storage compartment behind the sofa to store and protect precious fishing rods and reels.
A Little History
Gallant Lady IV would later be renamed Ice Bear upon becoming the private yacht of Jim Scott, Jr., Chairman and CEO of construction and engineering firm Kiewit, and friend of Warren Buffet. Designed and built with all the expertise and craftsmanship expected of a Feadship, Ice Bear's classic design holds her own quite well with contemporary yachts.
Scott owned Ice Bear until his passing in September of 2021. Under his ownership, the yacht was exclusively used for private groups and was meticulously maintained, putting her in a class of her own with regard to condition.

Two 1,175 hp Caterpillar engines drive Ice Bear to a maximum speed of 15 knots with a cruising speed of 13 knots. A true trans-Atlantic traveler, Ice Bear has a range of 4,850 nautical miles.
Interiors were originally designed by Paola Smith and Jan Moran. Ice Bear's five spacious cabins accommodate 10 guests, with a full beam main deck master suite embracing a study, seating area, and generous windows. Four additional cabins on the lower deck, two doubles and two twins, are also designed with seating areas and en suite baths. Crew accommodations secure berths for 11.
Ice Bear's upper deck saloon beckons for a film or a casual gathering, with plentiful seating, a big ... [+] screen, and lots of windows.
A sky lounge gives guests a panoramic perch even while underway. The observation lounge on the upper deck offers another option for gathering protected by expansive glazing and graced with a wide angle view. The main deck dining area in the main saloon is served by a full galley with generous work spaces, double oven, grill, stovetop hobs, double sink, spacious refrigeration, and ample storage.
The bridge deck has a large seating area perfect for cinema viewing, a discreet and convenient day head, captain's quarters, and the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse, while serving as command center to the captain and crew, also accommodates guests with a pair of elevated sofas with high tables.
Two fighting chairs on the aft main deck make for exciting action. The raised sofa seating gives the ... [+] gallery of spectators a great view while keeping them safe.
On the main aft deck, two fighting chairs take the spotlight, with raised sofa seating in a pleasant curve for keeping the spectacle in view. Behind the sofa, a hydraulic storage space rises to reveal the prized fishing rods and reels. For other water activities, a 28-foot Shamrock sportfisher sits transversely atop the upper deck. An 18- foot RIB tender is also on board.

A self-sustaining private island in Canada that can only be reached by boat or helicopter is for sale
- An island off the coast of Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia, Canada, is for sale for $7.3 million.
- Strum Island has a luxurious lodge and amenities for guests who want to escape a stressful world.
- The current owner won't be able to spend as much time there and has listed it for $7.3 million.
A private island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, is on the market at $9.95 million Canadian dollars, or about $7.3 million.
Strum Island is home to a luxurious lodge, and visitors can use the grounds for hunting, sailing, or just entertaining family and friends.
The 10-acre property is one of over 350 islands in Mahone Bay, which is about an hour's drive from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The current owner, Richard Goldenberg, told Business Insider that people currently pay to stay on the island like they do for a hotel.
Goldenberg said that the original developer thought Strum Island was beautiful — one of the few spots from which you could see and easily access the nearby town of Mahone Bay.
According to listing agent Mariana Cowan, of Coldwell Banker Maritime Realty, the property was conceived by its original owner as an escape from 9/11-era fears and stresses.
"That was the initial reason why he built the home, post-9/11, to have that getaway. That was very important to him as the initial developer of the property," Cowan told the National Post . "That is how it came about — to build this wonderful property as a safe haven."
Goldenberg also noted that whoever purchases the island could live there if they wanted to.
It's one of the closest islands to the mainland, making it ideal for anyone who doesn't want to be too far from civilization. But because of some of the island's features — from gardens to fishing opportunities — you might not ever have to leave.
Take a look a this luxurious getaway in Canada.
The developer purchased Strum Island in 2001 and started construction on the lodge in 2003.
The seawall was the first major step in construction. It's made up of a circle of five- to 10-ton boulders that surround the island.
The property took about 16 years to complete.
After construction finished in 2019, Goldenberg became a partner.
One of the obstacles to building on an island is that you must travel back and forth between the mainland for materials and supplies.
"Most of the stuff comes in on a barge," Goldenberg said. "The barge loads up the building material, brings it over to the island, and then it's used for construction."
The main lodge is 9,500 square feet.
The lodge has six bedrooms, each with its own bathroom.
There is also a two-story guest house.
There's another building on the island that has two apartments used for staff, according to Goldenberg, that can also be used to house even more guests.
The staff were provided by the property management and did cleaning, laundry, and cooking.
The island is only a three-minute boat ride from the mainland.
The town of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, one of the closest access points to the mainland, can be seen from the island.
Nearby Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, which is classified as a historic site by UNESCO, is only a 12-minute drive away from the dock on the mainland.
The property is being sold with two boats included, the listing says.
All the furniture is also included in the purchase price.
If you want an even faster mode of transport, there’s a helicopter landing pad on the island.
Strum Island is about 70 miles from Halifax Stanfield International Airport, the closest major airport.
There’s an undersea cable connecting the island to the mainland’s power grid.
There are also propane generators to provide backup electricity just in case the power goes out.
The property has its own well, so visitors are not reliant on the mainland for water.
There's an aquifer under the island that supplies the island with water.
There's a sewage system underground as well.
There are also gardens to grow your own food.
There are over 50,000 plants on the island and a greenhouse on the property as well as a vegetable garden with blackberries, strawberries, and more.
Fishing also provides another way to secure food without traveling to the mainland.
"There are an abundant number of different species of fish there at different times of the year that can easily be caught from there," Goldenberg said.
"There are fishing companies that will be happy to pick up guests right up the island and take them out for day trips to go fishing," he added.
If the weather gets turbulent, there are double-paned windows to protect from wind.
There are also three different types of heating systems in case it gets chilly.
The average annual temperature in Mahone Bay is 64 degrees.
"The current it has comes from the south, so it's probably a little bit cooler than Cape Cod," Goldenberg said.
Goldenberg and his two partners are selling the lodge because of a lack of time to visit.
They're involved in another construction project in California and won't have time to be on the island for the next few years.
