Sirena 42m Superyacht

In 2022, sirena marine unveiled sirena superyachts at the monaco yacht show, realizing their aspiration to cater to clients' yacht dreams across all sizes..

The shipyard boasts a track record of constructing intricate vessels of the highest caliber, with their foundational model range spanning yachts from 16 to 27 meters, having garnered numerous accolades. It was a natural progression for the brand to expand their offerings to include an innovative range of superyacht models at 35 meters, 42 meters, and 50 meters, further enhancing their appeal.

Sirena Superyachts has announced that the construction of their first 42-meter model is scheduled to commence this autumn. Luca Vallebona has been appointed to oversee the exterior and layout, while the interior spaces will be designed by the Italian studio Hot Lab, a member of The Viken Group.

Sirena 42m Superyacht

The design of the 42-meter Sirena Superyachts model can be customized according to the preferences of prospective owners. This includes the flexibility to position the owner’s suite on the main or upper decks, thereby enabling the creation of a dedicated dining space in the saloon, be it formal or informal. Additionally, it allows for establishing a guest area in the bow designed explicitly for exquisite dining experiences or pure relaxation.

The distinction between the interior and exterior becomes indistinguishable upon opening the sliding door at the bow of the owner’s cabin. The patio area is meticulously adorned with various elements, including a pergola, a pool, and a gracefully curved staircase that leads to the upper deck. This deliberate treatment guarantees that this secluded, unforeseen, and luminous space at the front of the boat seamlessly integrates with the overall design of the interior. Consequently, the forward cabin expands its outdoor area, resulting in a distinctive attribute within the contemporary semi-custom market.

Sirena 42m Superyacht

The remaining portion of the primary deck interior area is distinguished by an aft salon that seamlessly extends to the aft pool, positioned slightly lower, and designed to maintain a harmonious connection with the exterior. The salon’s windows are strategically placed to enhance this connection, and deliberate measures have been taken to minimize the presence of lateral pillars, enabling an unobstructed horizontal view that aligns with the surrounding landscape.

Sirena 42m Superyacht Interior

“The four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, with two VIP cabins featuring transverse beds and the entire partition that separates them from the guest cabins serving as a wardrobe,” continues Luca Vallebona. “Thanks to this solution and the en-suite bathrooms that separate them from the technical areas aft (garage and engine room), sound insulation in these spaces is well taken care of. In these cabins as well, the use of curved elements alternating with more rectilinear lines is evident. In general, through the use of curves, large fillets, and dynamic walls, I wanted to create the opportunity for an interior where there is always an element that can stand out from the rest, clear and not redundant.”

Interior design studio Hot Lab has carefully selected various materials, including natural beech and oak for the sofas, cotton and chenille for upholstery, and metal with a titanium effect for the deckhead panels. This deliberate choice of materials has resulted in a color palette that is light and desaturated. According to Hot Lab, this color range welcomes and accentuates the sun’s rays that permeate every area.

Sirena Yachts starts construction of the first 42M superyacht

42 meter yacht

When Sirena Marine launched Sirena Superyachts at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2022 it was the culmination of a dream to make clients’ dreams a reality at all sizes of yacht. The shipyard’s range of models, already established between 16-27 metres, now completes the brand’s appeal with 35-metre, 42-metre and 50-metre models.

Sirena Superyachts announces that the construction of the first 42-metre model is set to begin this autumn. Luca Vallebona has been selected to create the exterior and layout. The interior spaces wll be designed by Hot Lab, part of The Viken Group.

42 meter yacht

The layout of the 42-metre Sirena Superyachts model can therefore be tailor-made to the needs of any potential owner, with options that include locating the owner’s suite on the main or upper decks, which in turn allows for a dedicated dining area in the saloon or something less formal, and to create a guest area in the bow dedicated to fine dining or pure relaxation.

“The main layout features the owner’s cabin at the bow, a solution designed to provide direct accessto the forward patio, an open and private space that strongly characterizes my design proposal forthe Sirena 42M,” explains the designer Luca Vallebona . “Often, reference is made to large windows as a method to enhance the relationship between the interior and exterior. In the case of Sirena Superyachts, I wanted to take this concept a step further, ensuring not only expansive views of the landscape but also the possibility of physically stepping outside of the usually enclosed interior.”

42 meter yacht

Once the sliding door at the bow of the owner’s cabinis opened, the interior and exterior have no real boundary. The treatment of the patio with elements such as the pergola, the pool, and the organically shaped staircase leading to the upper deck ensures that this secluded, unexpected, and bright space at the bow of the boat becomes an integral part of the interior space design. The forward cabin thus extends its outdoor space, creating a unique feature in today’s semi-custom market.

The rest of the main deck interior space is characterizedby an aft salon, which ideally continues outside, almost seamlessly, to the aft pool, situated a couple of steps lower. The salon’s windows emphasise the connection with the outside, and efforts have been made to reduce the number of lateral pillars to allow the view to span horizontally, parallel to the landscape.

In general, through the use of curves, large fillets, and dynamic walls, I wanted tocreate the opportunity for an interior where there is always an element that can stand out from therest, clear and not redundant.”

The version with the extended living area, in addition to an aft salon entirely dedicated to thelounge, offers two areas that can be highly personalized. The first is the area forward of the stairson the starboard side, an intimate space that can serve as a game room, sitting area, or studio. The forward part is designed as a comfortable and welcoming dining area. What enhances this solution once again is the brightness and direct contact with the outside provided by the patio it overlooks.

“We focused a lot on the transition zones, like the one on the main deck leading to the stairs and the owner’s suite,” Vallebona explains further. “Often, these connecting spaces are some what neglected from a compositional perspective, when they can actually become beautiful spatial ‘narratives.’ The organic shapes, the way the staircase to the upper deck interacts with the nichein front of it, also create the opportunity for a more dramatic entrance to the owner’s cabin. Just before reaching the door, the space expands with a concave wall, the space stops, highlighting that just a step further is the access to the most important cabin on the boat.

42 meter yacht

About the interiors, Enrico Lumini of Hot Lab , said “The effect we wanted to achieve is certainly that of a studied environment rich in detail, but at the same time one that did not become mannerist at all costs. The lines are essential, almost obvious, yet in their continuouschromatic and material contrast they find strength and richness.”

The Hot Lab team has chosen materials ranging from natural beech and oak to cotton and chenillefor the sofas, and metal–in a titanium effect–for the deckhead panels. The result is a light andvery desaturated colour range which, says Hot Lab, is capable of welcoming and emphasising thesun’s rays that flood every space.

The style combines Nordic design, essential and rigorous, with a more Mediterranean ambiance, soft and relaxed. “The environments are homogenous, with details that are always updated from cabin to cabin but which reflect the design to express coherence,” adds Lumini. “Although they are never identical, the lounges recall each other just as the cabins recall the public spaces, andthe decoration of the private bathrooms recalls some elements of the living areas.”

The interior, as it turns out, reflects the concept of the entire yacht–a waterborne dream home thatis adaptable to multiple needs, well studied, rich but not opulent, technically proficient and easy onthe eyes. It is, as the Hot Lab team suggest, an excellent celebration of the technical capabilities of a constantly growing shipyard and of full maturity expressed by the design studio.

“It has been a desire of the Sirena management team to work with Luca Vallebona and Hot Lab for a long time, and we are excited by the results of our collaboration,” enthuses Cagin Genc , CEO of Sirena. “The interiors are simply stunning, with stylishly realised options that allow forhighly personalised finishing coupled to design flexibility in layout that ties in perfectly with Sirena’s forward-thinking approach to general arrangements without impacting on engineering elements. Hot Lab captured the essence of Sirena’s unique superyachts and their innovative and inviting layouts, and we are confident our enthusiasm will be shared by our clients.”

Sunseeker 42M Ocean: Exclusive details and pictures of superyacht project revealed

  • Superyachts
  • Top stories

Sunseeker has released more details and new images of its most spectacular model yet, the Sunseeker 42M Ocean.

This flagship of the yard’s British-built GRP range breaks the Sunseeker mould in several ways. It’s the first to get forward-raked bridge windows, which combined with the plumb bow, vertical glazing and surprisingly aggressive profile give it a quasi-explorer look.

However, the standout feature of the new 42M Ocean is its vast beach club. Fold-down quarter-cheeks on the stern section and twin Transformer platforms that can extend out flat or lower into the water make for one of the largest beach clubs we’ve ever seen on a boat of this size.

With a clever curved cocktail bar that slides out from the transom as well as slot-in bar stools, multiple sunloungers and freestanding furniture, there’s enough room for several groups of guests to congregate here without ever feeling on top of each other. In true superyacht style there is even a side-loading tender garage for a Williams 625 and a jetski.

Folding side balconies and twin Transformer stern platforms make for a huge beach club area

Two sets of teak steps lead up from this lower section of the beach club to a second split-level cockpit above. Centred around a spa tub that links the two different levels and has a glass sidewall and skylight providing a further connection with the beach club below, it adds up to the most comprehensive entertaining space of any craft this size.

As if this weren’t enough there are two further large outdoor socialising spaces, each with pools of their own. The first is the foredeck lounge which has the option of a tender crane and dock that doubles as a splash pool once the tender has been launched.

The second is on the sky deck, which sits on top of the raised skylounge but is still big enough to house a hot tub, bar, dining area and copious sunpads.

Sunseeker 131 yacht tour: Inside a fully-fledged tri-deck superyacht

The 42M Ocean’s bold new look is expected to appeal to a slightly younger demographic than its existing range of large yachts but also has the advantage of maximising interior volume. At 448GT its interior volume is over 30% bigger than the current Sunseeker 131 Yacht ’s measurement of 341GT. This allows for a spectacular open plan saloon and dining area on the main deck while still leaving space ahead of it for a huge master suite with a separate office, walk-in wardrobe and lavish bathroom.

The four identically sized double or twin guest suites occupy the midships section of the lower deck, while the space ahead of these is given over to a very generous crew area. With no less than four ensuite crew cabins as well as a comfortable mess area, it’s another potential game-changer; the old adage that a happy crew makes for a happy ship should make it a popular charter yacht too.

The sky-lounge aboard the 42M Ocean is another big step up from the 131. It makes use of the full beam using doors in the forward corners to give access to the side-decks that lead past the bridge and out to the raised foredeck terrace. To get from the sky-lounge to the foredeck on the 131 you need to walk through the bridge or face a long trek through the deck below and back up the steps to the raised bow area.

Sunseeker-Ocean-Club-42-yacht-exterior

Forward-raked bridge windows give the Sunseeker Ocean 42M a quasi-explorer look

The interior design schemes have all been developed by Design Unlimited and feature a very cool, contemporary look with modern low slung furniture that puts the focus on the views through the floor to ceiling glazing.

The Sunseeker 42M Ocean exhibits some radical thinking by the design team from its round-bilge, semi-displacement hull to the option of a hybrid diesel electric drivetrain to help boost range and allow for silent, emission-free cruising.

The 42M Ocean’s hull features a three-quarter-keel design that has been exhaustively tested using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as well as tank testing of a scale model at the QinetiQ facility in Haslar, the biggest free-running tank in the world. Chief Technical Officer Ewen Foster joked that the big-wave simulations were some of the best fun he’s had for ages.

Whereas the old 131 Yacht needed the bigger and heavier 3,140hp 4000 Series MTUs for a 23-knot top speed, the more efficient shape and modern build techniques of the 42M Ocean will allow it to reach a claimed maximum speed of 21 knots using a pair of MTUs more modestly proportioned 1,920hp 2000 Series M96Ls.

Large fuel tanks carrying 27,000 litres of diesel are expected to deliver a whopping range of 3,200nm at around 10 knots and 1,100rpm and well over 4,000nm at an eight-knot chug.

The first 42M Ocean is due to launch in spring 2023 and carries an estimated price tag of around £20 million. Three clients are already said to be close to signing contracts.

“Sunseeker needed to make a big statement and the new 42M Ocean does just that,” says MBY Editor Hugo Andreae. “The really clever bit is creating such a voluminous yacht that somehow still looks sleek and sporty.”

Sunseeker-Ocean-90-yacht-under-construction-poole

The new Sunseeker Ocean 90 currently in build in Poole is due to make its show debut at Düsseldorf 2021

About the Sunseeker Ocean series

The new 42M will be one of three new Sunseeker models to bear the Ocean name along with its focus on outdoor living. The first to arrive, and currently the smallest of the range, will be the Sunseeker 90 Ocean, which launches imminently and is destined for a world premiere at the Düsseldorf boat show in January.

Unlike the 42M, the 90 sports a familiar Sunseeker deep-vee planing hull capable of speeds up to 30 knots, albeit with a tweaked forefoot and a little more buoyancy aft that counters the extra weight of the beach club and tender garage. The fuel tanks are also bigger than usual, as is the 1,800nm range at 12 knots.

Above the chine, the 90 Ocean is a long way removed from any previous Sunseeker with a bluff bow and an exceptionally broad beam of 23ft 6in (7.2m) creating plenty of interior volume as well as that beach club.

The third model to carry the Ocean tag is the flagship 499GT Sunseeker 161 Yacht , which has now been redesignated as the 50M Ocean. This all-aluminium Sunseeker is being built at Icon Yachts’s yard in Holland. The first of these has been signed but is still some way off completion.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST SIRENA 42M SUPERYACHT WILL BEGIN THIS AUTUMN

Sirena Superyachts, unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2022, is set to start construction on its first 42-metre model. The Sirena 42M will feature exterior and interior layouts by Luca Vallebona and interior design by Hot Lab. The interior has been developed in layout and style with careful consideration to the design and flexible layout ethos the shipyard offers

When Sirena Marine launched Sirena Superyachts at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2022 it was the culmination of a dream to make clients’ dreams a reality at all sizes of yacht.

The yard is no stranger to building complexity at the highest levels of quality – their foundational model range, spanning yachts from 16 to 27 metres, has picked up several awards and plaudits, so it was a natural extension to develop an innovative range of superyacht models at 35 metres, 42 metres and 50 metres to compliment the brand’s appeal.

Sirena Superyachts announces that the construction of the first 42-metre model is set to begin this autumn. Luca Vallebona has been selected to create the exterior and layout, while the Italian studio Hot Lab, part of The Viken Group, has been chosen to design the interior spaces.

A tailor-made layout

The layout of the 42-metre Sirena Superyachts model can therefore be tailor-made to the needs of any potential owner, with options that include locating the owner’s suite on the main or upper decks, which in turn allows for a dedicated dining area in the saloon or something less formal, and to create a guest area in the bow dedicated to fine dining or pure relaxation.

“The main layout features the owner’s cabin at the bow, a solution designed to provide direct access to the forward patio, an open and private space that strongly characterizes my design proposal for the Sirena 42M,” explains the designer Luca Vallebona.

Once the sliding door at the bow of the owner’s cabin is opened, the interior and exterior have no real boundary.

The rest of the main deck interior space is characterized by an aft salon, which ideally continues outside, almost seamlessly, to the aft pool, situated a couple of steps lower. The salon’s windows emphasise the connection with the outside, and efforts have been made to reduce the number of lateral pillars to allow the view to span horizontally, parallel to the landscape.

The version with the extended living area, in addition to an aft salon entirely dedicated to the lounge, offers two areas that can be highly personalized. The first is the area forward of the stairs on the starboard side, an intimate space that can serve as a game room, sitting area, or studio.

“Often, these connecting spaces are somewhat neglected from a compositional perspective, when they can actually become beautiful spatial ‘narratives.’ The organic shapes, the way the staircase to the upper deck interacts with the niche in front of it, also create the opportunity for a more dramatic entrance to the owner’s cabin. Just before reaching the door, the space expands with a concave wall, the space stops, highlighting that just a step further is the access to the most important cabin on the boat.”

Interior intrigue

“The shipyard asked us to create a fresh, elegant and at the same time innovative design,” says Antonio Romano, commercial director and partner of The Viken Group and co-founder of Hot Lab. “We developed with the yard various stylistic solutions that could satisfy owners with very different needs while allowing the shipyard to standardize production as much as possible, to be able to offer a very personalized product in terms of design and functions, but solidly uniform in engineering and structural aspects.”

The team took the same multiple-configurations approach when it came to deciding the interior design too, blending a clever mix of linear and curved geometries and drawing on a palette of natural and warm materials contrasting with cold and precious surfaces in a design language that combines richly textured fabrics with a large number of plants.

“The effect we wanted to achieve is certainly that of a studied environment rich in detail, but at the same time one that did not become mannerist at all costs,” offers Enrico Lumini, Partner and Head of Design at Hot Lab. “The lines are essential, almost obvious, yet in their continuous chromatic and material contrast they find strength and richness.”

Style icons

The Hot Lab team has chosen materials ranging from natural beech and oak to cotton and chenille for the sofas, and metal – in a titanium effect – for the deckhead panels. The result is a light and very desaturated colour range which, says Hot Lab, is capable of welcoming and emphasising the sun’s rays that flood every space.

The style combines Nordic design, essential and rigorous, with a more Mediterranean ambiance, soft and relaxed. “The environments are homogenous, with details that are always updated from cabin to cabin but which reflect the design to express coherence,” adds Lumini. “Although they are never identical, the lounges recall each other just as the cabins recall the public spaces, and the decoration of the private bathrooms recalls some elements of the living areas.”

The interior, as it turns out, reflects the concept of the entire yacht – a waterborne dream home that is adaptable to multiple needs, well studied, rich but not opulent, technically proficient and easy on the eyes. It is, as the Hot Lab team suggest, an excellent celebration of the technical capabilities of a constantly growing shipyard and of full maturity expressed by the design studio.

“It has been a desire of the Sirena management team to work with Luca Vallebona and Hot Lab for a long time, and we are excited by the results of our collaboration,” enthuses Cagin Genc, CEO of Sirena. “The interiors are simply stunning, with stylishly realised options that allow for highly personalised finishing coupled to design flexibility in layout that ties in perfectly with Sirena’s forward-thinking approach to general arrangements without impacting on engineering elements. Hot Lab captured the essence of Sirena’s unique superyachts and their innovative and inviting layouts, and we are confident our enthusiasm will be shared by our clients.”

Istros: Inside the award-winning renovation of the historic 42m superyacht

A bold and eco-aware project has turned a neglected classic into the comfortable, modern 42m yacht Istros

It was a momentous year: 1954 was the first time a British monarch travelled to Australia, it was the year the Americans tested an H-bomb in Bikini, the year the Soviet Union stopped asking for reparations from West Germany – and a Dutch yard finished the construction of 42 metre Istros .

The post-war reconstruction had rewarded enterprising Greek shipowners, such as Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos, whose massive fleets allowed them to create two of the world’s most iconic yachts. For Onassis, that was 99 metre Christina O, the converted anti-submarine frigate that went on to host every mid-century celebrity from Winston Churchill to Marilyn Monroe; for Niarchos it was 115 metre Atlantis.

The Pappadakis family invested in fewer tankers but did well enough to finance the construction of Istros, which was then the largest yacht built in The Netherlands. Good thing a couple of nosey Dutch reporters were at the Amsterdam De Vries Lentsch shipyard for the launch, to record for posterity details such as the yacht’s radar, white private telephone – both of which were pretty cutting-edge in 1954 – and violet-blue bathrooms.

The size and luxury of his yacht notwithstanding, the family patriarch did not enjoy the limelight and taught his children the art of going unnoticed in a crowd. This may explain in part why Istros – which was known for a time as Andros – left very few breadcrumbs that would allow her history to be retraced. Little is known, therefore, about Istros’s next half-century.

We do know she had a fan club, however. An admirer snapped her up and embarked on a major refit about eight years ago, but the project came to a screeching halt. It happens, family and business circumstances change, and passions rise and fall. Another suitor came along but perhaps realised that the project was a bit much to handle – Istros was left to languish tied to a quay in Malta.

That’s where captain Tristan le Brun first spotted her. He was there with the successful charter yacht Etoile d’Azur , a 30m Moonen which he and the owner had refitted, and he decided to take a closer look at Istros under the cover of night. He was intrigued, but made no further intimations of interest at that time.

A competitive sailor who studied economics before becoming captain at the age of 22, he occupies whatever idle time he has searching boat listings and sorting the boats that are for sale by category. A few years after his Malta encounter with Istros , he was engaged in one such search – this time for a new project that the owner of Etoile d’Azur might enjoy – when he noticed that the classic boat was on the market.

“It was easy to get the owner excited about this because he loves projects. He is in yachting because he loves beautiful machines and that’s why we get along,” he says. “Before the refit of the Moonen 97 , we already had looked at doing a restoration but eventually concluded that it wasn’t worth it.” Instead, they focused on other challenges, doing “double seasons in charter and two Atlantic crossings”. Once they ticked off all those boxes, they found themselves in need of a new challenge. Istros looked like the right project: a pedigreed yacht with loads of charm at a very attractive price.

“The owner told me, ‘let’s buy it but keep it to ourselves and carry on researching the project’,” Le Brun says. They priced the cost of materials and asked several shipyards for bids. Le Brun was very keen on working with Feadship, but it took time to agree on financial terms. It helped in the negotiations that the project also appealed to Feadship , which has been building its heritage fleet, as well as launching new yachts. Eventually they reached an agreement and work began in Malta in late 2018.

Even the best-laid plans sometimes hit a snag, and the refit of Istros proved to be a bigger challenge than anticipated. First, there was not much available in terms of archives and drawings; the specs of the original engines, for example, were non-existent. Because of their age and of the way they worked, the owner and captain had decided to replace them. “The owner likes elegant things, but he is very modern. Neither of us like old things. And we weren’t interested in turning Istros into a museum piece,” Le Brun says.

The original engines were not practical for a yacht that was going to charter frequently, and they weren’t efficient. “To reverse or go forward, you had to turn off the engine and restart in the other direction. Some people love that,” Le Brun says, “but that was not for us. We wanted a magnificent boat that could move in and out of port like any modern yacht.”

They took the decision to repower the yacht with two fuel-efficient C18 Caterpillars. What no one expected was that the original engines, weighing 36 tonnes, represented more than 15 per cent of the boat’s weight – by comparison, the new engines are two tonnes each, with the gearbox. That was very significant in terms of the yacht’s stability and would warrant an enormous amount of lead ballast.

Another discovery helped derail the initial plans – extensive corrosion all around the steel superstructure had particularly weakened window and door frames. The owner and captain wanted the yacht to be compliant with Lloyd’s and the classification society said that to comply they had to replace the original teak doors with watertight ones anyway. Eventually, it became clear the better path forward was to excise the problematic superstructure.

“ De Voogt Naval Architects came up with the solution of building a new superstructure in aluminium, much lighter than steel, and that we could make with good frames and good doors. Today what costs the most are man hours, more so than materials,” Le Brun says. In other words, it’s more cost-effective to buy new aluminium than spend months repairing corroded steel. “On all levels, it was the most logical solution.”

Before cutting the original superstructure off, the refit team did a full 3D scan that would be used to build a new structure. Then Istros left Malta on a barge bound for a metal specialist in The Netherlands where the partially riveted steel hull would undergo additional repairs. Finally, in August 2019, the yacht arrived in Makkum for 11 months of detailed work and outfitting.

“A ship that is 65 years old holds surprises,” says Pieter Dibbits, manager of special projects at the Koninklijke De Vries shipyard. It wasn’t an easy time in the project, but everyone was invested in a successful outcome.

To that end, the yard had to reinvent the way it works, Dibbits says. They had eight to 10 drawings to go by, compared to the usual 5,000-plus available on a new build. Back in the 1950s, a boatbuilder worked very differently – they relied on their eyes and feel rather than precise mathematics with a tolerance measured in millimetres. And the original boatbuilder had a very good eye. “She is a rather narrow boat, which is part of her beauty, and she has many curves, (in fact) there is not a straight line on her,” Dibbits says.

Part of the challenge was to preserve the beautiful balance the original boatbuilder had created but also to make her better able to accommodate modern comfort and what comes with it – lots of electrical cables and pipes.

“We decided to make the superstructure slightly higher, about 10 centimetres, and the bulwark is also a little higher, so that the lines are the same,” Dibbits says. “It was a chilling moment to see the superstructure land on the hull that it had never seen. It fitted like a glove and the lines are spot on. From a distance you won’t be able to tell that the superstructure is higher. It turned out amazing.”

There are many details that are not visible at first glance. The shipyard moved bulkheads to accommodate a new modern layout suited to charter and new machinery. This entailed moving several portholes laterally. To avoid having to install storm shutters on the lower portholes, the yard came up with a custom-made solution borrowed from a new build project: they made a hatch using two layers of tempered glass separated by a void and sealed it in a watertight frame. The class society approved a similar solution for the portholes. “We had it tested and it is stronger than steel,” Dibbits says.

The shipyard also replaced the original teak masts with identical-looking structures built in aluminium and clad in a wrap that mimics teak. The same wrap is used on watertight doors that replace the original teak ones. “Not only does the wrapping look like teak but it also feels like teak,” Dibbits says.

The funnel, which on many classic yachts becomes an ornament (sometimes used to store deck chairs or brooms and brushes) still works as a conduit for the clean exhaust produced by a very modern class-approved Capstone microturbine. “It’s funny,” says the captain, “when we start the turbine, a little steam rises that looks like a white cloud.”

The owner wanted the interior to be modern, comfortable and family-friendly. To this end, he decided to keep the original teak wheel in what is now a paperless wheelhouse. Children, he thought, would get a kick out of turning it, but he did not care if it still worked.

The shipyard could not abide the idea of a decorative wheel and so they rigged it to work with the modern electronics. “It works flawlessly; that’s the only thing we used on sea trials,” Dibbits says. “All (the captain) has to do is to make sure he disengages it when the kids play with it.”

The traditional teak wheel is an eye-catching piece in the otherwise white pilothouse. “It looks like it’s made for Captain Haddock,” says Tracey Canavaggio of Van Geest Design . The designer, who does work for Feadship, was introduced to the captain by the shipyard. The boat was classical enough; they did not want darker woods and historical references, they wanted something fresh and livable.

“It was clear it would be a family boat, uncluttered, simple to live and practical for the crew,” says Canavaggio who handled the project with design partner Pieter Van Geest. “We started with a Scandinavian design, minimal lines but keeping it warm as well, and because it’s going to be mostly in the Med, we said let’s keep it white and crisp,” she says.

The main idea was that of a beach house for carefree living. The cabins have large comfortable beds and the showers stalls, all with bench seats, are spacious. The materials are easy to care for. The children’s cabin is part of a two-cabin suite in the aft section of the boat and has bunk beds, because kids love to climb. They gave the crew direct access to the galley on main deck and had a good time outfitting the galley with all that’s needed to serve up quality meals and drinks.

Contrasting with white bulkheads and ceilings, are oiled teak floors, dark stained spruce details and touches of colour for throw pillows and accessories.

Almost nothing was pulled off a shelf in a boutique. The owner introduced the designers to Belgian furniture maker Reul Frères and together they created nearly all the innovative, stylish furniture on board.

Most of the outdoor furniture is built out of Corian, including the outside of sofas that look as smooth and shapely as eggshells. Because the yacht has a lot of camber, they devised a creative way to fasten the furniture to the deck using two disks on wedges. “You turn them until you find the right curvature,” Canavaggio says. They also designed foldable deck chairs built in teak, stainless steel and linen. They are wide, sturdy, stable and elegant. Like Istros herself, they are a mix of classic and modern – timeless but new.

It’s unavoidable that people will ask, could the owner have built a new Feadship and get the same results? The answer is no. “If you try to build the same boat new, you would not be able to do it (because boatbuilding and rules have change so much). You can’t just make a replica. It’s not how it works,” Dibbits says.

“A new boat is just not the same. When you get on board an older boat, you know it has a history. You can feel it. It’s psychological but it is also the way it looks,” the captain says.

Istros no longer has blue-violet bathrooms or a big white telephone. But she has plenty a nosy reporter can marvel at – an internet-based TV system, fast induction phone chargers, flat panel antennas and a small turbine that spins on air bearings to power them all. She is a better version of her former self.
