Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

best yacht location reddit

One man has died and six people are missing after a luxury yacht sank in freak weather conditions off the coast of Sicily.

The 56m British-flagged Bayesian was carrying 22 people - 12 passengers and 10 crew - when a heavy storm that created waterspouts struck early on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued and a search operation for those unaccounted for - who include the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - is continuing.

Here is what we know about the tragedy so far and how it unfolded.

What happened to the yacht?

Map of Porticello and Palermo in Sicily

The Bayesian was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning, witnesses say.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.

The storm was so fierce that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

The vessel disappeared beneath the water at about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST).

A doctor treating survivors said the ship "capsized within a few minutes".

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m (236ft) aluminium mast to break in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

However, divers on the search and rescue team have said the ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, raising questions as to whether the mast was broken.

The ship's unusually tall mast may have contributed to its sinking, according to Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the mast acted almost like a sail in the strong wind "especially with it being so high".

The extreme winds could have caught the mast and pushed the yacht over, he said.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said after the storm had passed, the crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

His crew took on board some survivors, including three who were seriously injured.

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, said he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 04:15 we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht sinking "with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Golunski, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica how she held up her one-year-old daughter Sofia to stop her from drowning.

She said the two of them and her partner James survived only because they were up on deck when the yacht sank.

They were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

Charlotte said: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves."

She added: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

What is the latest with the search?

Six passengers remain missing and the Palermo coastguard says the search and rescue operation is continuing "incessantly".

The search began on Monday and specialist divers have been working at the site since early on Tuesday morning.

One diver told Italian media the yacht was "practically intact" on its side at the ocean's basin, about 50m below the surface.

The ship's hull is obstructed with furniture and various objects, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

Divers are looking for ways to access the yacht's cabins, but they have just 10 minutes to search on each dive before they need to return to the surface, the Italian news agency Ansa has reported.

A 1cm thick glass window is also being considered as an entry point.

Francesco Venuto, a spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, told the BBC on Monday rescue teams fear the bodies of those missing "must be" in the boat.

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense. In these conditions, we should have found something by now," he added.

A specialist caving search and rescue diving team arrived from Rome on Monday, hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by Tuesday morning at the latest, the director general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said.

On Monday, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch sent a team of four investigators to carry out a preliminary assessment of the Bayesian's sinking, the BBC understands.

Who was on board?

PA Mike Lynch

There were 22 people on board when the storm hit, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

The body of one man has been recovered. He has not been formally identified, but the Palermo coastguard said he was the ship's cook. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Among the six people still missing is 59-year-old tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates".

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Afterwards, he told the BBC in an interview he had been able to prove his innocence only because he had the wealth to pay the enormous legal fees required.

The other missing people include Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is among the 15 people to have been rescued, with eight of those receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

Charlotte Golunski, her husband and daughter Sofia were also rescued and were unharmed, but taken to hospital for check-ups.

She said they had been on the yacht with a group of colleagues.

The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

A doctor based in Palermo said the "very tired" survivors were "constantly asking about the missing people".

Dr Domenico Cipolla told Reuters that one woman he treated described the trip as a "corporate holiday", with some of those on board "very young".

"There were a lot of work colleagues, friends, a few husbands, wives, or a couple of friends who had joined in," he adds.

What is a waterspout and why do they form?

A waterspout is similar to a tornado and can form over oceans, seas or large lakes.

The western half of the Mediterranean has experienced severe storms since the middle of last week.

Through Sunday night and into Monday morning, a zone of bad weather passed by the north coast of Sicily.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A waterspout is a tornado that has occurred over water rather than land.

"They can form during intense storms, on the base of cumulonimbus/thunder clouds.

"Turbulence, and the wind blowing in slightly different directions around the cloud, can cause rotation under the base of the cloud and the spout to form.

"Like tornadoes, they bring powerful winds, but instead of picking up dust and debris they cause a water mist around the column of rotating air."

What is the Bayesian, and who owns it?

EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The Bayesian yacht

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is understood to derive from the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Ms Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

A spokesperson for Camper and Nicholsons International, the firm that manages the 2008-built boat, told BBC Verify: "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared to tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

The best ship for every Starfield player

From the Shieldbreaker to the Wanderwell, cross the galaxy in style

by Ari Notis and Ford James

The Narwhal sits parked at the spaceport in New Atlantis so Starfield citizens can admire one of the best ships.

Choosing the best ship in Starfield is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. It’s not just your means of fast travel through the Milky Way. It’s everything from your storage locker to your crew’s quarters to the thing that protects you from space pirates. Your ship, in other words, is your home .

It’s nigh impossible to get the single best ship in Starfield early on, thanks to prohibitively expensive sticker prices. Bear in mind, too, that to pilot ships higher than class A, you’ll need to invest points in the Piloting skill (which requires destroying enemy ships, which itself requires a better ship).

Still, in short order, you’ll get plenty of money and skill points in Starfield , which should soon open up your options. Without further ado, these are the best ships in Starfield , including the best class C ship , the best free ship , and the best ship to buy .

And if you want to modify them to make them even better , our guide on how to use the Ship Builder can help, and learn where to buy ship modules for even broader customization.

Best ship for beginners: Razorleaf

A menu shows the stats for the Razorleaf, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Complete the “Mantis” side quest Cost: Free

Fairly early into your playthrough, you will likely pick up a note titled “Secret Outpost!” from a dead Spacer. I found it during the mission “The Old Neighborhood,” while searching for the whereabouts of Vanguard Moara. Head to the Secret Outpost on Denebola I-b, and you’ll begin a quest titled “Mantis.”

Spoilers aside, as it is one of the best side quests in Starfield , you’re rewarded with some immensely powerful armor, along with the Razorleaf — one of the best class A ships in the game for anyone who is a fairly low level. It has a cargo hold with room for 420kg of stuff, so a slight downgrade on the 495 offered by the Frontier, but with almost triple the fuel and 100 higher hull protection, along with more powerful weapons, it’s a no-brainer. Especially since it has a shielded cargo hold with a capacity of 160, essential for smuggling contraband .

Best free ship: Kepler R

How to get it: Complete the “Overdesigned” side quest Cost: Free

After the “Starborn” main mission, linger around Constellation headquarters and talk to Walter. You’ll get the “Overdesigned” side quest, which sends you to the Stroud-Eklund offices to consult the company’s staffers on designing its new spaceship. Instinct would suggest you pick and choose ideas based on what you think would be best in a ship. Don’t do that. Instead, affirm literally everyone’s ideas. That will reward you with the best free ship in the game. (Consult our video walkthrough above for the detailed quest steps to “Overdesigned.”)

If you do it right, you’ll get the Kepler R — a class C ship with truly bonkers stats: six crew, 28 LY jump range, 805 shield power, 3,500 cargo capacity, and some pretty solid weapons to boot. Yes, the Kepler R is ridiculous-looking and, no, it would never in a million years sell on a legitimate spaceship market. But with stats like these and a price point of 0 credits, who cares about aesthetics?

Best class A ship: Wanderwell

A menu shows the stats and design for the Wanderwell, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Select the Kid Stuff trait Cost: Free

If you chose the Kid Stuff trait , your parents will be alive in the game and you can visit them, in exchange for 2% of your credits every week to support them (though that is capped at 500 each time). Give it enough time and, eventually, your dad will gift you the class A Wanderwell ship that he won while… gambling. Guess that’s what the cash you send home to help the family is going toward!

On the plus side, while it doesn’t have any Shielded Cargo like the Razorleaf, the Wanderwell does have a cargo capacity of 880, making it perfect for carrying all the resources you need to complete side missions. It only comes with two weapons by default rather than the standard three, so you’ll need to fork out a little to get it fully equipped, but with a jump range of 27 LY, it’s the next best upgrade after the Razorleaf.

Best class B ship: Shieldbreaker

A menu shows the design and stats for the Shieldbreaker, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Buy from New Atlantis Ship Services Technician Cost: 265,443 credits

This class B bad boy costs a fair whack, but if you’ve prioritized both main story and faction affiliation missions (both of which pay more than most side quests) and sold literally everything you’ve seen, you probably have enough credits in the bank for the Shieldbreaker . Once you turn your attention to side activities, such as destroying the Crimson Fleet and hauling thousands of resources across the galaxy, this ship can do it all.

With a crew size of five and a cargo capacity of 2,280 (none of it shielded though, unfortunately), there’s a lot of room here. Living up to its name, it also has relatively powerful weapons, and comes with laser that automatically target enemy ships.

Best class C ship: Silent Runner

A menu shows the stats and design for the Silent Runner, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Buy from HopeTech HQ Cost: 390,150 credits

Want to become a full time hauler? Look no further than the Silent Runner , a class C ship that’s essentially the Shieldbreaker’s older brother. While the Shieldbreaker is pretty good in combat, the Silent Runner is all about the cargo, with a whopping 6,060 cargo space. You can upgrade it further with weaponry of course, but this is the one to go for if you want to become a space trucker.

On top of the cargo space, it can grav jump up to 29 LY and has 1,164 hull, which is more than enough to hold off any Crimson Fleet or House Va’ruun members that come a-knocking. It’s also got 300 fuel capacity, which will get you almost anywhere in the charted galaxy.

Best ship for carrying cargo: Vanquisher

A menu shows the stats and design for the Vanquisher, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Buy from Stroud-Eklund Showroom in Neon Cost: 335,655 credits

The Vanquisher is a solid class C all-rounder, with 4,120 cargo capacity, 1,100 fuel, and 908 hull. Where it especially shines is its missiles, which do 149 damage, along with its 730 shield. It leaves room to be desired (read: upgraded) in the other weapon categories, but when your missiles are dealing that much damage, it doesn’t matter too much. It also may not be the most aesthetically pleasing ship, but at the end of the day, you’ll mainly be looking at the interior anyway.

Best ship for combat: Abyss Trekker

A menu shows the design and stats for the Abyss Trekker, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Buy from Ship Services Technician in Paradiso Cost: 347,230 credits

The Abyss Trekker is another class C ship that is by far your best bet if you plan on getting into plenty of dogfights in space. You won’t be carrying much loot with this as it only has 340 cargo capacity, but you will be able to take down any opponents you encounter thanks to the 100 missiles and 170 ballistics stats.

With a shield of 850 and hull of 1,031, it’ll take a lot to get this cyan-white ship out of the skies, but if you do need to get away, it has 950 fuel and can grav jump up to 25 LY.

Best ship to buy: Narwhal

A menu shows the stats and design for the Narwhal, one of the best ships in Starfield.

How to get it: Buy from Taiyo Astroneering in Neon Cost: 432,620 credits

The Narwhal is arguably the best — and certainly one of the most expensive — ship in the entire game. Setting you back more than 400,000 credits, this class C blue beast is incredibly well-rounded and can jump up to 30 LY, so you can go wherever you like. It can have up to seven crew members aboard, has 560 fuel, 2,118 hull, and 1,760 cargo capacity.

As a result, it does the job for hauling lots of materials (though isn’t the best for that), but if you want one ship to do as much as possible rather than switching between ships depending on what the current task is, the Narwhal is for you. Special shout out to its 114 ballistics and 82 missiles too, as they pack a serious punch.

[ Ed. note: Spoilers follow for the ending of Starfield .]

Best New Game Plus ship: Starborn Guardian

Starfield Starborn Guardian ship in orbit around a planet

How to get it: Start New Game Plus Cost: Free

Minor spoiler warning for New Game Plus here, so if you want to go in without any knowledge at all, you’re safe to stop reading and go for one of the other ships in this guide. However, once you do finish the game, New Game Plus will reward you with the Starborn Guardian , a class A ship that cannot be bought or stolen during your first playthrough.

The Starborn Guardian is one of the fastest pre-made ships in the game, can grav jump up to 30 LY away, and has two unique weapons in the Solar Flare Beam and Gravity Torpedo. With a cargo capacity of 950 and a hull of 649, it’s one of the best ships in the entire game, especially since you earn an upgraded one each time you start new game plus again. Plus it looks incredible — you can’t create anything like this in the ship builder.

The 5 most desirable cabin locations on any cruise ship

Gene Sloan

What is the best location for a cabin on a cruise ship?

As a cruise writer for more than 20 years , I've heard that question a lot, and it's not an easy one to answer. On any given cruise vessel, the best cabin location for one person might not be the best choice for another.

The ideal cabin for a light sleeper on a particular ship, for instance, might be a room tucked away in the quietest corner of the vessel. But another passenger on the same ship who cares more about the view might be happiest with a completely different spot.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On a typical cruise ship, cabins are spread out all over the place — high and low, and to the front, middle and back. Not that that's always the case.

Some cruise vessels — particularly river ships — have cabins clustered at their backs with public areas at their fronts. Other vessels, such as most of the ocean ships operated by luxury lines Seabourn , Silversea Cruises and Scenic Luxury Cruises , have cabins clustered at their fronts with public areas at their backs.

Cruise cabins also come in all shapes and sizes and with a variety of amenities and benefits. Some lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , offer a huge range of room options , from tiny, windowless "inside" cabins to palatial suites, in all sorts of locations on their vessels.

Indeed, there's such a wide variety of not only cabin locations but also types of cabins on ships that the best way to narrow down the choices of accommodations on any given vessel might be to assemble a list of cabins you definitely don't want to choose.

As it happens, we've already done that here at TPG in our guide to cabin locations you definitely should avoid .

Still, there are some broad categories of cabin locations on cruise ships that always are in high demand due to their prime locations.

Midship cabins

These are the cabins that you should seek if you're particularly prone to seasickness.

The big allure of a midship cabin is its stability. You won't feel the rocking of the sea in a midship cabin nearly as much as you will in a cabin toward the front or back of a vessel. This is because ships are like teeter-totters. They pitch forward and back around a central axis that barely moves.

If you are in the center of a ship, you are at the equivalent of the center of a teeter-totter. Even in very rough seas, you're not going to move nearly as much when the ship goes up and down in the waves as someone located at either of the far ends of the ship.

Note that it also helps to be low to the water if you're worried about seasickness.

On very large ships, where activity areas are spread far apart, midship cabins also offer the advantage of being at the center of everything. The main pool deck, for instance, is likely right above you when you are in a midship cabin — not a long walk away. Ditto for central interior areas.

Cabins at the back

There's something mesmerizing about being at the back of a ship overlooking its wake. When you are in the open ocean, you can see the long trail of churned-up water behind you, stretching seemingly forever like a road in the sea. It is tangible evidence of your journey. When you are pulling away from a port, you have the best view in the house.

I admit I could stand at the back of a ship for hours looking out over the water, and I'm a big fan of rear-facing cabins — as long as they have a balcony. I'm firmly in the camp that says rear-facing balcony cabins are among the best balcony cabins on any ship.

Often, the balconies on rear-facing cabins are bigger than the balconies on side-facing cabins, and they also feel quiet. There are far fewer balcony cabins at the back of a ship than on the sides of a ship, so you don't hear a lot of noise from your neighbors.

best yacht location reddit

If your cabin is at the rear corner of a ship, you might even have a balcony that wraps around two sides of the vessel. Those sorts of balconies are the ultimate in cool.

Note that on some ships, all or most of the rear-facing cabins are large, pricey suites, but this isn't always the case. Carnival Cruise Line ships, for instance, typically have quite a few non-suite accommodations at their backs.

Related: Everything you want to know about cabins and suites on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Cabins at the front

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of forward-facing cabins. For starters, there is nowhere on a ship more prone to movement than the front of a ship. Forward-facing cabins also often lack balconies, for reasons I will explain in a moment.

All that said, many cruisers just love forward-facing cabins. They love them because the view can be spectacular, particularly as you arrive at a new port. Also, some people love the idea of being at the very front of a ship and being able to see where they're going.

Related: Why it pays to upgrade your cruise cabin

best yacht location reddit

Forward-facing cabins also sometimes come with extra space. This is because they sometimes incorporate the oddly angled interior spaces that exist at the front of ships, which often have slanted fronts. As mentioned above, forward-facing cabins often will not have balconies, as the wind over the bow of a ship that's underway is such that a balcony isn't practical. Instead, they'll have large windows — sometimes floor-to-ceiling windows — that offer stellar views.

Cabins surrounded by other cabins

Light sleepers, take note: The best place to be if you want the best chance of not being bothered by noise is a cabin that is surrounded by other cabins. This means a cabin that has a cabin directly above it and a cabin directly below it, as well as cabins on both sides.

To find such a cabin is harder than you might think. On the typical ship, the top deck of cabins is directly below the pool and activity decks, which can be noisy during the day and even into the night (yes, the noise sometimes will waft through your ceiling). The cabin deck just below that top deck of cabins can be a good choice.

But go a couple more decks down, and you're often right on top of interior entertainment decks that are home to music lounges, theaters and other noisy venues.

Related: 15 ways cruising newbies waste money on their first cruise

If the ultimate in quietude is your goal, you'll also want to avoid cabins anywhere near elevators, passenger launderettes and other areas that draw foot traffic. It can take some studying of deck plans, but as seasoned cruisers know, it's worth holding out for a cabin that is far away from anything that could keep you up at night.

Cabins near the spa

If you're a big spa fan — the kind who can spend hours on vacation getting treatments — you'll want to get a cabin right near your ship's spa. Trust us. Walking long distances across a bustling ship in your robe and slippers for a spa appointment can be a bit, well, weird.

Cruise lines cater to spa lovers with special spa cabins that are close to the spa and come with special spa amenities. These might include plush bathrobes and slippers to wear on your way to the spa, upgraded toiletries, scrub kits, aromatherapy diffusers and even yoga mats. The cabins sometimes also come with spa discounts, unlimited spa lounge access and other spa-related perks.

Lines that have designated spa cabins on some or all ships include Celebrity Cruises , Carnival, Holland America , Azamara and MSC Cruises .

On Celebrity, the spa cabins — called AquaClass cabins — come with exclusive access to a special spa restaurant called Blu.

If you're interested in a spa cabin, you'll want to book far in advance. They often sell out early.

Bottom line

There is no right answer to the question of what is the best cabin location on a cruise ship. The perfect location for a cabin for one passenger might not be the perfect location for another.

That said, there are certain places on cruise ships that are better than others when it comes to cabin location, including the front and back of vessels. There's nothing quite like being able to look forward from your room when on a ship approaching a port or to watch the wake of the ship from a rear-facing cabin.

Best Trailblazer ship upgrades in Star Wars Outlaws

Here is how to upgrade your ship in Star Wars Outlaws and the best upgrades to prioritise

Looking for the best Trailblazer upgrades in Star Wars Outlaws? The Trailblazer is Kay Vess's trusty ship, navigating her across the galaxy in Star Wars Outlaws . Although, it requires a fair few upgrades before it's in fighting shape.

If you've just unlocked the upgrade menu and are a bit lost or you're wondering how to even access the upgrades, we have you covered. Below is an explainer of how to unlock Trailblazer upgrades along with a list of the best upgrades to prioritise first in your playthrough.

How to upgrade the Trailblazer

There are various upgrades for the Trailblazer that affect things like speed, missiles, durability and capacity. These all require Credits and specific upgrade materials that you can gather as you complete various jobs in Star Wars Outlaws (or from bartering with syndicate merchants if you have a good reputation with them).

To see how far you are progressing towards an upgrade, navigate to the ' Vehicles ' tab from the main menu and select the Trailblazer. Once you have enough materials to perform an upgrade, you must visit a ship mechanic to install them. There is usually a ship mechanic in every major city, represented by a ship and spanner icon on the map.

Star Wars Outlaws screenshot showing where to find a ship mechanic in Mirogana, Toshara.

There is one such mechanic near the docking bay in Mirogana and another near the landing pad in Jaunta's Hope.

The upgrade menu will only become available once you progress through the main story enough to have completed the 'Underworld' quest and have gathered the fuel injectors Waka needs to repair the ship.

Complete the following 'New Tricks' mission from Danka and you'll get the chance to take the Trailblazer into space. Unfortunately, it takes a bit more work into the main story to get to true galactic travel.

Best Trailblazer upgrades

Star Wars Outlaws screenshot of the Trailblazer ship upgrades menu in-game.

The best Trailblazer upgrades in Star Wars Outlaws to prioritise first are:

H-RD Duralloy Hull

C-k10a rapid fire cannon, c-10 plasburst cannon.

The main Trailblazer upgrade types to familiarise yourself with are weaponry, defence, propulsion and passive systems. Of these, the H-RD Duralloy Hull is pretty much a must-have. This is mostly due to its auto-repair function that can help you keep the ship intact automatically in combat without you having to juggle systems.

As you traverse space there will be plenty of pirates, opposing syndicate thugs and imperial troops that will pick a fight with the Trailblazer. As such, you'll want to also kit the ship out with advanced weaponry like the C-K10A Rapid Fire Cannon that fires at multiple targets at once.

Similar to the previous upgrade, the C-10 Plasburst Cannon is a fantastic offensive option if you're tired of being bombarded by pirates in space. This upgrade equips the ship with the ability to deal a charged shot at foes for increased damage.

If you need help getting specialised parts for ship upgrades, look to the 'Faction Stock' section within any merchant's menu. To shop from this contraband inventory, you'll need to pick up contracts from syndicates and build a good reputation with them. You can also visit the black market in Mirogana for occasional ship parts or raid imperial and syndicate bases.

That rounds up our guide to the best Trailblazer upgrades in Star Wars Outlaws. For more Star Wars Outlaws tips and tricks, check out our guide to the best Speeder upgrades , tips to make Credits fast or our guide to all Expert locations in the game and gain new skills for Kay Vess.

[top 10] no man's sky best ships (and how to get them).

Living ship flying through space

Ships can be so beautiful, soaring through the vastness of space! Aesthetics are everything.

Deep in space, far from any respectable source of civilization, you suddenly find yourself surrounded by sentinels. They are after you and your ill-gotten gains. What do you do? If you aren’t careful or don’t have the proper ship, you will likely find yourself blown into the next generation with a destroyed ship and a lost inventory.

But do not fret! I am here to tell you it doesn’t have to end that way. Well, if you are smart about how you choose your ship that is. I am going to tell you the top fifteen ships that will help you avoid meeting the icy grip of death deep in space. We will also go over the best methods for finding your ship in the ever-expanding universe that is No Man’s Sky (NMS).

If you have spent any time in NMS, you will likely realize what a feat it is to hunt for a specific ship. With theoretically infinite galaxies and space stations, it is difficult to decide where to begin. But like most good stories, we are going to start at the obvious spot. The beginning!

Before we get to the beginning, however, I wanted to share which solar systems have the best odds of finding each class ship. The odds are based on the economy rating (poor, average, wealthy, outlaw) and change in class as we get progressively more wealth.

  • C-class ships can be found anywhere but have the highest odds in poor systems and outlaw systems
  • B-class ships are most commonly found in average or wealthy systems
  • A-class ships show up in (you guessed it) the average or wealthy systems
  • S-class ships are incredibly rare, they show up in outlaw systems the most often, but only a 5% chance (better than average or wealthy which only hold a 1% and 2% respectively)

Since there are no duplicate ships (as each is an individual instance for each player) we are going to break this up into a manageable-sized bite. We will identify the top fifteen ships you can find based on their base stats (that is, without adding upgrades to your ship.)

I am here to be your CarFax of the No Man’s Sky universe, I will give you the specs on all the ships that you should need to find your way safely through the vastness that is space.

#10- RNG gods be kind! Your starting ship, a C-class fighter, that is.

Body Image

From small beginnings your adventure begins...

Now, this might strike you as obvious, but the best way to start in No Man’s Sky is to keep the starting ship. It is free, barely damaged, and as a C-class fighter, it has the following boosts to its stats

  • Between 8%-15% damage boost
  • No Boost to shield
  • Between 5%-15% Agility
  • Very High Maneuverability (Between 388-445)

How do you find starting the ship:

You spawn on a planet, and it has crash-landed close by. Since money is tight in No Man’s Sky at first, it makes the beginning easier if you can manage with this ship. It won’t help you conquer the galaxy but will let you travel through it.

#9 Solar C-class Ship

Body Image

Soaring through space in a solar starship!

Solar class ships arrived in Endurance update and they are incredibly useful. They are the best second ship to acquire. It has the most balanced stats, and the best C-Class ship that units can buy. Another big reason to buy a solar ship is that you don’t need to charge the launch thrusters all the time. Fuel can be hard to come by and it is never fun to run out in the middle of exploring.

All solar ships can recharge the launch systems while flying through space. That saves you energy, materials, and units all while flying through space. On top of the solar sails looking cool, the C-class ship only costs at most up to 7 million units. While it can take you a bit to save up enough units, if you trade in the old ship, it is manageable during the early days of the space journey. It also adds two boosts to your from ship number one, adding a boost to your hyperdrive and the shield!

Their stats include all categories

  • Between 8%-15% boost to Damage
  • Between 8%-15% boost to Shield
  • Between 8%-15% boost to Hyperdrive
  • Between 5%-10% boost to Agility
  • Has High Maneuverability

How to find a Solar C-class Ship:

They are most commonly found in Outlaw Stations, but you can encounter them in any star system. Outlaw Stations are labeled by a skull on the galactic map. This ship is a solid second ship and will help you survive until we get to our next stepping stone ship.

#8 Fighter B-class Ship

Body Image

Your enemies won't know what hit them!

Moving onward, evolving and adapting are important. When you inevitably cross paths with a fighter plane, make sure it is a B-class, and buy it. This ship will provide you with more damage and shields, and while it loses some boost to the hyperdrive, it has high maneuverability.

The base stat boosts for Fighters in the B-class are

  • Between 24%-45% boost to damage
  • Between 8%-15% boost to shield
  • Between 15%-20% boost to agility
  • Very High Maneuverability

How to find a Fighter B-class Ship:

These ships will be relatively affordable and they shouldn’t require much searching. You have the best odds of finding these ships in Vykeen-controlled systems that have an average or wealthy economy. If you go explore the space station here, it shouldn’t be long until you see one arrive.

#7 Solar B-class Ship

Much like the Solar C-class, these ships have balanced stats that will help you survive the vastness of space, whether you are a merchant, bounty hunter, or outlaw. It might have slightly less damage than the Fighter B-class we just discussed, but it helps you to advance through space significantly faster with an added boost to the hyperdrive ability.

The base damage output is only slightly lower, which is for the low range of the bonuses. The range for the solar ships is 23% to 45% bonus to damage, whereas the fighter class bonus is 25% to 45% bonus damage. This two percent is easily made up by the time and effort you save by having a more efficient hyperdrive.

The base stat boosts for solar ships in the B-class are

  • Between 23%-45% boost to damage
  • Between 8%-30% boost to shield
  • Between 15%-30% boost to hyperdrive
  • Between 10%-20% boost to agility
  • High Maneuverability

How to find a Solar B-class Ship:

It has been brought up that solar ships have a higher spawn rate in outlaw stations, but there is a higher spawn chance for B-class, A-class, and S-class ships in wealthier systems, so you have a better chance by finding a wealthy system and hanging out in the hangar. Wealthy systems are labeled in the galactic map under the economy category with words such as advanced, affluent, booming, flourishing, high supply, opulent, prosperous, and wealthy.

#6 Living Ship

Body Image

Not an alien invasion, just cool ships. Well, unless you consider yourself an alien.

A break from those solar ships. The living ship is a unique ship that showed up during the Origins Story Missions. This was an update. The lore speaks of them as a living ship that showed up as a result of a Korvax experiment. The player needs to complete a mission to build their first Living Ship.

I won’t go into the details of this in this article, so to avoid spoilers. These ships are all S-Class ships and they are excellent ships to have. They have great boosts

  • Between 50%-75% boost to damage
  • Between 15%-38% boost to the shield
  • Between 75%-95% boost to hyperdrive
  • Between 10%-15% boost to agility
  • Low Maneuverability

All Living ships are S-Classes, but the low maneuverability and the low agility both make your odds of surviving space attack lower. Overall they aren’t at the top of the list for our journey.

How to find a Living Ship:

As mentioned above, you acquire this ship through a storyline known as Origins. This storyline has you build the ship parts, follow the path of a dead traveler, and rewards you with a living ship. This ship also requires a lot of time to build and materials to find, as opposed to just buying your ship.

#5 Solar A-class Ship

Body Image

When they are landed they still look cooler than the other ships!

A solar ship is the next best ship, as you approach mid-game. Usually, at this point in No Man’s Sky, you will be preparing to need materials that are found on more dangerous planets. At least if you are like me and prefer to just fight the sentinels and rob the Gek of their precious metals.

This solar ship is much better than all A-class ships except the Fighter A-class ship, which we will take a look at later in the list.

The base stat boosts for solar ships in the C-class are

  • Between 45%-60% boost to damage
  • Between 23%-38% boost to shield
  • Between 30%-45% boost to hyperdrive
  • Between 20%-30% boost to agility

One important stat to point out is the boost to the agility of the ship. At A-Class, it becomes very close between the solar ships and the fighters, as they only differ by the amount of damage output. Depending on your play style you might want to switch these, but for most people, this is the next best ship to have.

How to find a Solar A-class Ship:

One thing to note with No Man’s Sky and hunting for that perfect ship: as we move onward up the ranks, from B-class to S-class, the odds of encountering them rapidly drops. A-Class ships have, at their highest odds, a 28% chance of showing up. The best plan is to jump from wealthy system to wealthy system until you encounter the ships. Each time you land in a galaxy, the ships that arrived reset, even if the models won’t.

One trick for hunting for that “special ship”: dropping a save beacon, and if your ship didn’t arrive right away, reload the save. It speeds up ship hunting greatly if you don’t mind this method.

#4 Solar S-class Ship

Body Image

Let those sails fly!

No surprise to anyone that these made the top 4 ships on this list. Honestly, these ships are probably the best class to use if you want a balanced play style. With this ship, you can dispatch the occasional pirate and save a lot with regard to fuel costs.

  • They have great stats across the board
  • Between 60%-75% boost to damage
  • Between a 23%-50% boost to a shield
  • Between a 38%-50% boost to hyperdrive
  • Between a 35%-40% boost to agility
  • and high maneuverability

They are a great ship to use, and they look the coolest out of all non-exotic ships, including the living ship. The ability to charge while flying is probably one of the most useful recharging abilities in the game. It charges the launch thrusters AND these ships have the best pulse engine stats (after upgrades) in the game. Makes for easy hit-and-run attacks on freighters.

How to find a Solar S-class Ship:

In the deep recesses of space, where the RNG gods smile upon you. Just kidding. But it does come down to the drop rates for S-class solar ships. In the systems that are listed as being more likely to find a solar ship, Outlaw systems, there is only a 5% chance of finding one. The good news about this? This is the highest spawn rate for S-class ships out of all of the space systems.

Even in wealthy systems, there is only a 2% chance of S-classes spawning, and even less in the other two. If you find one in a poor economy PLEASE take a screenshot and share it.

#3 Fighter A-class Ship

Body Image

My personal favorite, even if it isn't the best ship in the game.

Final 3 ships, here we go. The fighter A-class is one of the best ship classes, allowing you to get hours of usage despite not being the best ship in the game.

This ship ends up being one of the best in the game. High damage, high agility, high maneuverability, and a decent shield. Honestly, the reason it is ranked this high is the importance of the high maneuverability and damage. Being able to make those sharp turns while dogfighting makes the difference.

Stats of the Fighter A-class

  • Between 75%-90% boost to damage
  • Between 34%-30% boost to shields

This brings up a major point for the other ships, the ability to make things die very quickly. Most ships have a decent boost to hyperdrive, BUT, it doesn’t matter how far you can jump if you get jumped. Better to be able to obliterate/survive an assault in the stars than have to fix your ships.

How to find a Fighter A-Class Ship:

The best place to find an A-Class starship would be in a Vykeen-controlled system that was wealthy. You are looking at about a 30% spawn rate, which is the best spawn rate for all spaceships. It shouldn’t take you very long if you are patient and have enough units to drop. It is not super cheap to buy an A-class outright. Especially if you can find a top-tier one, with the best stats, it can run in the price range of 49,000,000 units.

#2 Fighter S-class Ship

Body Image

Looks like an A-Class, but better.

These ships will make you death incarnate. You can blast your way through any ship in the galaxy without care. I love them because on principle I dislike authorities, and the sentinels check that box. If you are looking to live the Vykeen lifestyle and obliterate sentinels left and right, go with this ship.

The only downside to these ships is the low shields compared to other S-ranked ships:

  • Between 70%-90% boost to damage
  • Between 24%-38% boost to shield
  • Between 35%-45% boost to agility

If this boost to the shield were higher, it would have bought itself a first-place ribbon. But not quite there. Truly a fun ship to blast your way through space, plus it gives you a great boost to survivability as you escape sentinels after raiding planetary deposits, or simply for mining on the surface of the planet.

How to find a Fighter S-class Ship:

As I said for the S-class solar ship, these are fairly uncommon to come across. The best thing to change these odds was Outlaw systems. Find yourself an outlaw system and land, and pretend to be Han Solo. Except you aren’t going to shoot anyone (probably). The rate of spawn goes up to 5%. All it requires is time and units.

#1 Exotic class Ship

Body Image

Ooooooh. Shiny!

Finally, here we are at the end of the list, the best ship for late game for a balanced play-through.

Exotic ships.

This is not solely because they are cool looking, or the go-to for “best ship in the game.” These ships simply have a very well-rounded base stats, thus easier to have as a high-powered ship.

They boast the following stats

  • Between 70%-90% boost to shield
  • Between 40%-50% boost to agility
  • And high maneuverability

These ships essentially take the best of all of the ships and smash them together into one glorious lump of metal barreling through space. The two most important stats are the shield and the damage, as you can survive a long time and you can blast anyone who shows up to fight you.

But aside from that, it helps you lower the cost of exploring, making it easier to go further and make some distance toward the center of the universe. It helps you with both the storyline but also simply for deep space exploration.

How to find an Exotic Class Ship:

These have a very low spawn rate, as they are the strongest ship class in the game. They have a spawn rate of 1%-2%. The rate is higher in any wealthy system. There is still some debate on whether or not Outlaw systems have a higher spawn rate, maybe I will run a test see (unless one of you wants to, then I would love that data!

Your best bet is to find a trading post on a planet, as more ships are there overall. If you use the save/reload trick, you will have a much higher chance of finding one here. If you don’t there are still more ships that land at trading posts, thus increasing your odds of getting this ship.

Crashed ships or shipwrecks?

I couldn’t find any statistics or odds of ships showing up from distress signals. Sounds like another data collection project to pull off…

No Man’s Sky is a beautiful game, yet somewhat unforgiving. There are infinite planets, systems, galaxies, and ships. Laced with plants, unforgiving terrain, creatures that will fight you, and a whole array of ships to shoot out of the sky. This challenge with this is just putting in the time and having the units. So get out there and find your dream ship. See you, space cowboy.

Charter Season: 7 of the World’s Best Yachting Locations

From the French Riviera to the British Virgin Islands, Luxury Defined explores seven glamorous yachting destinations around the globe

Does anything even approach the romance, adventure, and freedom of cruising the Seven Seas in a luxury yacht? The vessel is built to enhance, embrace, and refine every aspect of life at sea. The best designs emphasize space, fixtures, finishes—and creature comforts.

The superyacht dials all that up to 11 by maximizing livability with such amenities as swimming pools, personal watercraft (a minisub , anyone?), satellite links, private chefs, outdoor entertainment decks, cinemas, even helipads.

For any sea traveler, though, the best leg of any voyage is the voyage home . This edition of Luxury Defined showcases the world’s most livable yachting destinations, and the homes that equal—or even exceed—superyacht luxury.  Welcome home, sailor, home from the sea.

1. The French Riviera

French Riviera coastline

Perhaps the most glamorous seaside destination in Europe, the French Riviera , or Côte d’Azur, draws the sailor and sunseeker alike. Picture-postcard villages and chic beach resorts line the coast from the cosmopolitan glitz of Saint-Tropez and Cannes to the unspoiled beauty of Port-Cros.

The winter resort city of Nice, with its ample sunshine, white sand beaches, and special events such as the Cannes Film Festival attract a who’s who of international glitterati. West along the coastline, past the jet-set destination of Saint-Tropez, the island of Porquerolles awaits, with a peaceful escape from the bustle of the mainland.

2. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy

Coast of Italy

Sardinia’s Emerald Coast is a playground for the jet set, and its dramatic, unspoiled coastline and luxury marinas draw yacht folk from all over. The marine grottoes of Cala Gonone and the rock formations of Capo Testa, shaped by centuries of sea winds, are favorite attractions.

While the quaint towns of Carloforte and Castelsardo provide local color, the exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers dining, a clubhouse, and spa services. Sailors can explore the tiny islands of the Maddalena archipelago or the white sandy beaches and rocky cliffs along the Gallura coast. Tranquil sunset viewing turns to fine dining and sizzling nightlife in the exclusive restaurants, clubs, and discos of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo.

3. The Greek Islands

Greek islands

Surrounded by its “wine-dark” seas and thousands of islands, ancient Greece prospered with a maritime culture that became the cradle of Western civilization.

There is plenty left to explore, from the natural beauty of its uninhabited isles to the beaches and cosmopolitan nightlife that have made islands such as Mykonos into global destinations. Yachters can stop for an archaeological exploration on Rhodes or Delos, a night on the tiles in the tavernas of Athens, to the nightclub scene of Mykonos, Corfu, and Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.

The adventure starts in the ancient seaport of Piraeus, in southwestern Athens. Zea Marina is one of the finest, full-service marinas in the Mediterranean, offering 670 berths for vessels up to 492 feet.

4. The Bahamas

Yachts in The Bahamas

The 700 islands of The Bahamas begin at Bimini, just 45 miles off the coast of Miami, and stretch 500 miles southwest to the islands of Great Inagua and Little Inagua, neighboring the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Bahamas were made famous by Ian Fleming (the islands featured in the James Bond spy thrillers Casino Royale , Thunderball , The Spy Who Loved Me , Never Say Never Again , and License to Kill ). But they’ve been a haven for sailors and swashbucklers since the 18th century.

They’re a paradise below the waterline, too, for sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Palm-lined beaches, nature preserves, world-class golf courses, and colorful Colonial-style villas welcome seafarers ashore.

5. The Florida Keys

Florida Keys

The Florida Keys arc southwest from Virginia Key in the Atlantic Ocean (just south of Miami Beach) to Loggerhead Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote seven-island archipelago in the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off Key West. The islands are easy to navigate. Cruising in the Keys can mean a leisurely and scenic sail through the shallow interconnected basins of Florida Bay or a more adventurous trip out on the open waters of the Atlantic.

But it’s not all plain sailing. Mariners can drop anchor in a coral cove to swim, snorkel, or fish, or drop anchor in Islamorada, the “Sportfishing Capital of the World.”  Of course, a trip to the Keys is not complete without a visit to continental America’s southernmost city, Key West, otherwise known as the Conch Republic—a place described as “close to perfect and far from normal,” where flip-flops are the official footwear and every day the sunset is applauded.

6. The British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

One of the world’s great sailing destinations, the BVI comprises four main islands—Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. There are 50 more islands and cays, including Necker Island (Sir Richard Branson’s private paradise) and Salt Island, home of the wreck of the RMS Rhone, and hundreds of tiny palm-lined islets, sandbars, and rocky outcroppings to navigate, bounded by the beautiful Sir Francis Drake Channel, named after the Elizabethan admiral.

There are countless draws for mariners: calm currents, steady trade winds, and protected bays. It’s a treasure trove, quite literally—some say it’s buried on Norman Island at the southern tip of the archipelago, made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . Today, The Bight, one of the BVI’s most popular (and beautiful) anchorages, enchants seafarers with its sea caves, wreck-diving, and the infamous Willy T floating pirate bar and restaurant.

7. Bermuda

Bermuda

Bermuda has been the crossroads of the North Atlantic voyage since the town of St. George’s was settled by shipwrecked sailors in 1609. Between March and November each year, racing yachts from around the globe arrive in the harbors of St. George’s and Hamilton parishes to compete in regattas organized by Bermuda’s many sailing clubs. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the island’s temperate climate is a year-round draw for leisure travelers, who come to cruise the island’s Great Sound and soak up the sun and local culture. The warm waters are ideal for scuba diving, whether it’s to explore marine wildlife habitats or historic shipwrecks that dot the reefs around Bermuda’s perimeter.
