Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Dawn 39

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 284.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Dawn 39 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.91 - 2.01 meter (6.27 - 6.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Dawn 39 is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 3HM 35P diesel engine at 30 hp (22 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.6 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 151.0 liters (39 US gallons, 33 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Dawn 39 is 1.80, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Dawn 39 is about 211 kg/cm, alternatively 1183 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 211 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1183 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 22.05

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 37m 2 (398 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

The Dawn 39 is a 39.33ft masthead sloop designed by David Alan-Williams and built in fiberglass by Pointer Yachts (UK) since 2001.

The Dawn 39 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a very high performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a fast cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally small. There is a short water supply range.

Interior joinery work is a combination of solid hardwood, veneer faced plywood and solid slatted style lining panels, all in Teak. To say the finish is superb, is an understatement. A generous and comfortable aft cabin has a full size double, there is plenty of storage throughout, she has a big and well laid out galley with twin sinks, big fridge and veg box. "U" shaped saloon settee, single settee opposite with pilot berth above, heads with full standing headroom and a forecabin which is perfectly designed. It is almost impossible to fault the boat. Broker's Comments

The Dawn Class 39 was originally built as the Contessa 38, after being modified in the transom area the new design was put into custom production for the more discerning yachtsman. The quality of build and fitting is simply stunning. She is a sea boat of the highest calibre with looks and practicality to match. No expense has been spared in her preparation or presentation. Viewing is strongly recommended as the pictures and words cannot impart the true nature of this fine yacht. See "more photos" to view 39 internal and external photos of this vessel. Contessa 32 – Yachting Monthly review

  • Theo Stocker
  • April 15, 2014

Theo Stocker takes an in-depth look at this iconic cruiser-racer, on an early season trip out of Sunderland

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

What’s she like to sail? The Contessa 32 is one of the most successful cruiser racers of the last 30 years – and it’s easy to see why. She’s a joy to sail on the wind, quick on a reach, and well set up for spinnaker work downwind. With a dry weight of over four tonnes, a deep forefoot leading to a long fin keel and a skeg-mounted rudder, she’s a solid sea-boat that will see you through all seasons of offshore sailing. All that and she’s still winning races on handicap. The deep cockpit felt very safe, and the proper gunwales made working on deck feel secure. The grabrail attached to the aft edge of the sprayhood made stepping onto the slightly narrow sidedecks easy. With the sprayhood and dodgers in place it did feel a little too cocooned and visibility to windward was a bit limited. She is heavier and slower on the helm than a fin-keeler with a balanced spade rudder, and she needs 12 knots or more to really get going. But all of that pales into insignificance when you’re at the helm. She’s made to sail and she does so beautifully, cutting through the waves in a way that makes you want to let her keep going. Given a chance, she’ll eat up the sea miles, whether that’s around the cans or crossing the North Sea to Norway. What’s she like in port and at anchor? She manoeuvres predictably under engine in port. With the rudder immediately aft of the prop you have instant control when going ahead. Astern, it is a fact that she will walk to port and so as long as you work with that, you’re fine. A solid anchor and plenty of chain mean Charlotte can anchor almost anywhere with confidence and her low-windage hull shouldn’t be prone to sailing around her anchor. While the hull shape limits living space below decks – anyone over 6ft tall will have to stoop slightly – there is a surprising amount of stowage. There’s space to sleep six, and Alan’s had nine for dinner around the large fold-out saloon table before, but living on board with a full crew would be a bit cosy. The galley gives plenty of space to whip up hot meals for your crew in port or at sea. She is a comfortable and homely boat inside, with some of the old charm that you no longer get from sitting in a tupperware box. Would she suit you and your crew? It’s hard to imagine many crews for whom a Contessa 32 wouldn’t meet a good number of their criteria. She’ll take you to Greenland and back without any qualms. She’ll happily potter out for a daysail or a weekend away and give you somewhere to get away from it all. The next weekend, she’d be just as happy racing around the Isle of Wight and would still have a chance of winning. She’s a true sailing boat and built for mile after mile of satisfying cruising, and solidly built – she will look after you in pretty much anything. She’s not a modern boat, so if you are going Mediterranean island hopping and want space to for an extensive bathing platform or a sun-deck, she can’t really help you. But that’s not what she does. For Alan, who often sails her singlehanded, or with a couple of crew on longer trips around the British coast, she’s the ideal boat. She certainly suits her canine crew Charlie, who was introduced to her at three weeks old and has happily accompanied Alan ever since, almost entirely ‘without accident’, as long as he gets his morning walk before departure. The Contessa 32 is a versatile, trustworthy companion of a boat that is game for pretty much any type of adventure you might suggest.

STROMA has been a much-loved family yacht, which has looked after us in all conditions. Her stunning looks are what attracted us to her (as we had always admired her smaller cousin, the Contessa 32) and what we will miss most when we move on. She has a great turn of speed, and some good results in passage races to prove it, but most of all she is a delight to sail.

We have over our 9 years of ownership invested significantly in STROMA. The boat has always had a minimum of 8 weeks ashore where she has been anti-fouled, the engine and sail drive serviced, new anodes fitted and any other repairs undertaken. But in addition to this the following major upgrades have been undertaken; all through hull fittings replaced 2014, standing rigging replaced 2015, new sails 2016, engine and sail-drive removed, refurbished and replaced with new engine mounts and new sail drive diaphragm 2019, all windows and hatches removed, refurbished with new glass and the topsides professionally painted, the teak decks professional refurbished and new sea toilet installed in 2020, new B&G navigation and radar systems installed in 2021, new sprayhood 2022.

STROMA will pass to her new owners in great condition and with a huge range of extras that are listed in her detailed Berthon sales particulars. Having retired with the plan to undertake more adventurous cruising involving spending much longer periods of time aboard, we are looking to buy a larger yacht with more cabins and space below.

Fresh Water & Water Heating System:

  • Hot and cold pressurised water system to galley and heads.
  • Hot water via calorifier and immersion heater.
  • Salt water pressured anchor wash.

looks brand new is originally Fracas & now "Saga" owner had spared no expense in updating 10yrs or so ago & a broken forestay. will require a of the masthead & conversion to wire stays & quality interior , but was done 5yrs ago with barrier coating & has been cleaned by diver owner's wishlist comes out to ~$24k quote from respected rigger. This includes & pulling for rerigging
I am looking at it as a good opportunity to get a proven performance boat that is ready for according to my preferences & has been cared for meticulously (other than broken forestay from storm 3 or 4yrs ago). I've reached out to a to take a look at the Landfall '38 as it already has the , , and a better layout for cruising. If it's a clean on the balsa-cored , it may be worth it, but the foam-cored Contessa 39 may win out for me.

and somewhat similar in appearance ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DESIGNS. The 39 mentioned by the original poster I believe was built primarily as a race boat and is somewhat rare. The tooling for the 38 was apparently also used by another builder besides Jeremy Rogers to built the Dawn 38.

And here is the Contessa 39:

Very different .

I have sailed the Dawn a very traditional British design at the time and a beautiful boat.

. In getting further , it seems Saga was brought over from the UK for & cruising in the 90's, went to an owner that got into flying more than sailing, then went to the current owner. It has functional , , , and upgraded , gauge, etc. Will need some to get in tip-top shape, but that is to be expected with nearly any boat .

Thank you all for the feedback & wish me luck on the next steps!

Any boat built by Jeremy Rogers in the 70's was very well constructed. The Contessa 32 is a with a rich of ocean passages, etc. Notably one came through the infamous 1979 Fastnet race in good shape. The 39 is more than cruiser so be sure that is what you want. Good luck!

sedan and someone’s offered him a mint 1962 E-type for practically nothing.

Of course it’s an impractical car. It has only two seats and a tiny trunk. With nasty understeer if you let off the in a curve.

Seriously. The is a fine boat but in a different league. Doug was at the top of his . And Roger’s built! Semicustom with foam and kevlar in the hull - well cared for too. Compared to a volume production boat with a balsa ?

Buy the Contessa.

called it a farm, but could use a few more. Love the tiller, no chains to break. I will be leaving for St Helena after close of all systems and a few more . Prior boat was an O'Day 39 which sailed great but I believed lacked the structure for long term sailing.

You can buy my boat after I die or fall off which ever is first!

Boat: Olson 40
. I raced quite often on the boat for several years. Milt could easily have afforded a , but 39 feet is what fit behind his house in Huntington Harbour. Milt spent whatever he wanted on all his boats.

The reason Apogee has a boat stepped is because the bridge into Huntington Harbour is 27’ at low tide. So all of us with sailboats in HH had tabernacle spars, where the mast leans forward, using the boom as a lever. The backstay would be unpinned from the top of the hydraulic cylinder and attached to the top of the end of the boom. Lines ran from the boom to the shrouds to keep the boom on centerline as the mast was lowered and raised. Did this every time going out, and back home. Very easy, very reliable. Made mast super easy, no needed. And no down below! I absolutely hate stepped masts.

The fact that Jeremy did so well with his 39, including during Fastnet ‘79, was certainly part of the decision making process, as Jeremy alluded to in his letter.

Its very small below compared to a cruiser , much less room than a . However, its an excellent layout for sailing. Excellent.

The layout of Apogee was spot on, and changed in minor ways to ensure every line led perfectly, leverage was appropriate, clearance for the handles, etc. No detail was overlooked.

The Vogels eventually the boat to someone who added , , , and so on. It all looked well done, but boy did all that stuff complicate what was an elegant boat.

The two things I did not like:

The did not have enough balance, so was painful, like being hit in the arm every 30 seconds. We traded off at the every 30 minutes for this reason. While this makes sailing a lot more fun — everyone gets a turn — I would get a better . Rudders need to be replaced, after 40 years its probably time.

On Apogee, the laminate includes Kevlar. Kevlar absorbs aggressively. If you crack the hull, you might find the structure compromised fairly quickly (months), as spreading through the Kevlar will cause extensive, invisible, . If the boat seems surprisingly flexible, that is what happened. If the boat is still stiff, very likely no problem.

I know Kevlar was very expensive: the material was much more expensive, and the labor to laminate the Kevlar was much more expensive. I do not remember how much more, but on the order of doubling the price of the boat. I do not think people understood the risk of Kevlar then, and many people today still do not.

The Dawn Class concept is for yachts with elegant sheerlines, bow and stern overhangs, seaworthy performance,  well balanced hull lines, stability to carry a generous sail plan that is split into manageable sized sails,  a boat to view at a mooring with feelings of pride in ownership and an eagerness to go sailing.

This style emulates the character of well known designs and yachts created in Lymington.   The designs of Laurent Giles are well recognised for their distinctive lines and sheerstrake.  Jeremy Rogers built Contessa yachts have a big reputation for crossing Oceans, being safe family boats with a distintive style.

The design for the Contessa 38 was created whilst working as in house designer for Jeremy Rogers.  The brief was to create a big sister to the iconic Contessa 32.  After Contessa Yachts built many boats, the molds for the Contessa 38 were modified to become the Dawn Class 39 and to continue the range of what is best described as the ‘Lymington Style’ classic blue water yacht.

Characteristics for Dawn Class Classic Cruising Yachts:

Balanced overhangs with curved bow profile. Full pronounced sheerline and caveta board,  with slight tumblehome in topsides that are not of excessive height. Moderate length/beam and displacement/length ratios.  Good stability with angle of vanishing stability in excess of 130 degrees.  Low C.G. lead bulb with steel keel used as fuel tank & return fuel heat sink. Skeg hung rudder for directional stability in a seaway, incorporating semi-balanced rudder to assist docking maneuverability.

Masthead cutter rig with full length batten mainsail.  Safe cockpit with protective coamings and the mainsheet clear of the cockpit.  Full head room and long low profile coachroof.  Comfortable interior with plenty of grab handles in a seaway, for short handed sailing and guests.

This Dawn Class 43 is building in Cornwall UK.  The husband and wife boatbuilding team of Tony & Val Williams are building the boat themselves.

As well as building a timber Giles 38, they have fitted out a Contessa 38 and also  built a Dawn Class 42 Brychan 1

Dawn Class Cruising Yacht

Cruise at any time of the year in this classic.  There is a diesel fired heater that will kept you warm and an airy layout down below that will keep you cool in the summer.  This  yacht is very comfortable down below and on deck while sailing.

For night passages, the deck layout is safe and the sails are easy to handle.  The yacht is built with a strong structure and has a big engine.

Blue water sailing offshore is the biggest design advantage because it also give you a smooth ride over the waves close to shore.

Take up a mooring in a secluded basin and the family will be inspired to explore a tranquil environment.   The galley is fully furnished.  There is ample water for showers and a well designed area for the sink and toilet to give complete privacy.

Your guests will have a real bunk that is comfortable at sea and in the marina.

DAWN CLASS 50    Built in Steel

Dawn Class 74                                                           design 38

The concept is to create a yacht which portrays the timeless elegant lines of the "classic yacht", whilst using the best of modern construction techniques and equipment.  A yacht that has true blue water sailing capabilities to make voyages to interesting places and which can be handled with the minimum number of crew.

Wooden construction with epoxy coating is used to enhance the feel of a living boat without compromising the strength.  The lines are clean and fair with long overhangs giving a well balanced hull.  The moderate displacement hull has a tall rig and large sail plan to drive it.  The required stability is achieved from a lead bulb keel with a low centre of gravity.  The semi balanced rudder is hung on a skeg/bustle which gives good directional stability.

The interior has a live-in open plan arrangement amidships with the four double cabins forward and aft.  Careful use of laminated curves and angles, produces many interesting shapes and perspectives. The large aft cabin has ensuite bathroom.  Two sea-berths are arranged on the starboard side aft with a day toilet.  The stairway, with oilskin locker under, sweeps down into the saloon leading onto the navigation area.  The large galley opens out to the dining unit, with a lounge area opposite and a stove heater. The saloon has a central octagonal skylight to produce a bright interior. The split cabins forward share a toilet/shower room.

The largely flush deck has a central cockpit and cabin coachroof with skylights over the fore and aft cabins.  The fore end of the cockpit has shelter under the doghouse. The jib sheets are led aft to a grinder system, whilst the cutter rig staysail is self tacking. A 12 ft dinghy can be stowed on deck forward.  The mainsail has full length battens to eliminate flogging when sail handling and make it easier for short handed sailing.

The current owner (27 years) of this Contessa 39 has keep this vessel in excellent condition.  He has sailed with his children on the great lakes, solo sailed offshore and continued to tweak this vessel for safety, speed and comfort as an ocean going yacht. It is dry, clean and appears to be very solid.  As a broker, I find that sailors who want to "solo" or 'race" are always trying to convert a cruising yacht to meet their needs. With this yacht, no conversion needed, she is already to go! No need to find a mate to sail with you, just take off and enjoy all the oceans have to offer! Its amazing to see a vessel like this offered for under $60,000!  Very afforabable!  Live the Dream! Call today for more information!

Sails are all North and include near new main and jib.

The Best Sailboats for the High Seas?

dawn 39 sailboat

At the St. Petersburg Boat Show month last month, I had the pleasure of seeing delivery skipper and author John Kretschmers presentation on what he called sailboats for a serious ocean. I have reservations about any ideal boat list, but Kretschmer, who reviews boats for Sail Magazine and whose most recent book Sailing a Serious Ocean is available in our online bookstore , has the ideal background for this sort of work, and a list like this is undeniably helpful for wannabe cruisers who need a place to start their search.

I certainly wouldnt limit my search to boats on such a list, but by paying careful attention to the pros and cons of each, you can find something that suits your own aspirations.

Here are the boats Kretschmer suggests: Contessa 32, Pacific Seacraft 34, Pretorien 35, Cape Dory/Robinhood 36, Valiant/Esprit 37, Prout Snowgoose 37, Alajuela 38, Privelege 39, Freya 39, Passport 40, Caliber 40, Baba 40, Hallberg Rassy 42, Taswell 43, Hylas 44, Norseman 447, Beneteau 456, Outbound 44, Hylas 46, Kaufman 47, Tayana 48, Hylas 49, Amel Maramu 53, and the Sundeer 60/64. For a brief capsule summary of each, be sure to check out his website.

The list is hardly definitive. There are plenty of good boats that arent featured, and some of these would be ill-matched for the wrong sailor-Kretschmer clearly pointed this out during his talk. I like how the list presents a good cross-section of the various shapes and sizes for a boat in this category. For example, Kretschmer includes the Prout Snowgoose and Steve Dashews Sundeer 60, boats that, notwithstanding their successful record at sea, fill an outlying niche.

If I were going to expand the list, one of the heavier-displacement microcruisers like those I blogged about would be a nice addition. Although I would be wary of promoting even the most formidable of this breed as well-suited for a serious ocean, John Neale of Mahina Tiare Expeditions includes one of them, the Dana 24, on his own list of recommend cruising boats . Neales much broader list of boats is accompanied by a very helpful discussion of design elements to consider.

What got me thinking about formidable cruising boats was our series of reports o n sailboat construction , focusing specifically on structural details. Although there are plenty of excellent coastal cruisers on the market, once you start talking about offshore duty, scan’tlings (the dimensions for structural components) take on far more importance.

A few years ago we touched on this subject in our Mailport section, encouraging readers to suggest their own nominees for a list of what we called at the time, tough boats, vessels that were built to take a beating, requiring minimal care and upkeep.

Here are some of the boats that were suggested from our readers: Mariner 36, Cal 34, Morgan 43, Swan 43, Bermuda 40, Island Packet 26, Mariner 47, LeComte Northeast 38, Westsail 32, Dana 24, J/35, and the CSY 44.

Id be interested in hearing of other nominees for this list, or other good resources for sailors looking for a short list of good offshore boats.

For those who are frustrated to find that their own ideal boat isn’t on anybodys list, I wouldnt be too miffed. The best line Ive heard in a while on this topic came from Steve Callahan, the author of the survival classic Adrift , who gave a presentation at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Show . When I asked Steve, who has sailed extensively on both multihulls and monohulls, what type of boat he preferred, he said, quite seriously. Well, at the end of the day, the best cruising boat is the one that you are on.

On watch: this 60-year-old hinckley pilot 35 is also a working girl.

Interesting list. I am fond of Hylas of which you chose three models. However, I am suspect of their yard and construction techniques and do not have confidence that they are as strong as they are beautiful. Only one Hallberg-Rassy was selected, which is a far more robust and dry sailing boat than the Hylas. Passports make a good boat as does Cape Dory and several others on your list. Didn’t four sailors die on a Beneteau in 2018? Over all it is a decent list.

I believe this is the accident you’re talking about in which a Beneteau and it’s bolted on keel parted company.

Almost all of the sailing clubs in San Diego rent Beneteaus out. They are a decent coastal sailboat. I have a couple friends who have even made the crossing to Maui in them..not me, not ever. I consider them a living room boat. Having said that, I am certainly no expert so its just my opinion. If I am crossing an ocean I want a capable kindly strong boat with redundancy built into critical systems.

Curious to think what people think about the early 70s Swan 43 as a cruising boat for a couple with occasional guests for a round the world trip? I have an S&S 30 which is too small but I do have some bias towards their designs. Add a watermaker and some power generation and off you go… Any thoughts?

Are Motor Sailors like the Nauticats or Fishers ocean worthy ( if their pilot house windows and sliding doors are lifeboatified ? )

Walt Schulz’s Shannon 43 is a beautiful, sea kindly, comfortable and sturdy bluewater boat. Walt had not only the ICW and Bahamas in mind when he designed and built 52 of them. He designed for ocean cruising. He believes his boats should outlive him and still sailing for generations. We sailed the Chesapeake, Bahamas, Caribbean and Pacific to Australia on a Shannon 43 ketch. She took great care of us and is still turning heads.

Great article! John Kretchmer is one of my fave modern day sailors. While there is only one Crealock design on John’s list, and the Dana is added on John Neale’s list, I was surprised not to see a Crealock/ Pacific Seacraft 37 mentioned. But there are so many great serious off shore boats, it’s hard to narrow it down to 10. Here’s a few to think about. Cape George Cutter 36. Biscay 36, tradewind 35, Rustler 36, Nicholson 31 (never talked about) and 32. Seldom seen on top 10 lists, but great boats. Thanks for the article.

Great comment and interesting to note that the first four of your additions are those currently entered in the 2022 Golden Globe Race – kind of the definition of a blue water boat.

Hey! I know this is somewhat off-topic however I needed to ask. Does operating a well-established blog like yours take a massive amount work? I am completely new to writing a blog but I do write in my journal everyday. I’d like to start a blog so I will be able to share my experience and feelings online. Please let me know if you have any kind of recommendations or tips for new aspiring blog owners. Thankyou!|

The Ericson 41's solid build and stylish 1960s lines offer an offshore-ready cruiser with class. The slender cockpit means you can brace yourself with a foot on the the leeward side. Which, as it turns out, makes you look classy as well. (Photo/ Bert Vermeer)

  2. Dawn 39: big sister to the Contessa 32

The waterline length of the bigger boat is proportionally longer though. The Contessa 32 has a 66% WL length compared to 76% on the Dawn 39, which should give good hull speed. The hull is balsa cored above the waterline for stiffness, as are the decks. Williams rounded the bilge in the forward sections to reduce pounding when heeled.

  6. Review of Dawn 39
