A2 – FONTAINE DESIGN GROUP

  • SPECIFICATIONS

Cabot Lyman and his family have had a working relationship with designer Ted Fontaine for nearly thirty years.

The last Lyman-Morse/Fontaine Design Group collaboration was the well-known AMELIA. Launched in 2002, she is a 63′ center cockpit pilothouse design. Featuring, a shallow draft keel centerboard hull form, AMELIA is a fast and comfortable sailing platform.

We are pleased to announce that this proven and successful hull shape has been lengthened to 67’ and is available now as a semi-custom series – the A 2 .

Built to Lyman-Morse’s exacting standards, A 2   will be fast, comfortable, and long-legged, destined for anything from high latitude adventure sailing to island hopping in the Med, Caribbean or Maine. A 2  has an attractive profile, one that blends a low coachroof, center cockpit design with an attractive pilothouse with full standing headroom. The low profile pilothouse design is still unique because of the comfort and security provided by the low profile roof top. In fact, the top of the pilothouse is so low one can easily see over the top while standing or seated at the helm.

Layout and Design

Built to Lyman-Morse’s exacting standards, A 2   will be fast, comfortable, and long-legged, destined for anything from high latitude adventure sailing to island hopping in the Med or Caribbean or Maine.

The pilothouse is arranged with forced hot air heating and air conditioning as well as an abundant amount of natural ventilation; with two opening hatches and two removable windows aft making her close to a convertible top.  The center cockpit arrangement is a refinement of the many successful Little Harbor center cockpits that Ted Fontaine designed with all of the sail control lines led aft to the primary and secondary winches, both of which are within easy reach of the helmsman position behind the wheel.

The deck arrangement has been drawn to be as simple to sail as she will be to maintain.  Originally conceived as a low-maintenance deck with no varnished teak, the builder and designer could not resist adding a bit of varnished teak nosing to the pilothouse and coach roof as well as the teak cap rail to the bulwark.  The net result is undoubtedly worth the effort.

Because of her roots as a long distance family cruiser, the ocean going interior is arranged to provide comfort afloat for up to six passengers and crew in three double cabins.  The large main salon is accessed via the center line passage from the pilothouse.  Stepping down three steps, one finds oneself in a wide open salon area with convertible dining table to starboard that folds away neatly into a lounging cocktail table.  The interior decor is comprised of lightly painted bead board trimmed elegantly with glossy varnished mahogany.  Intricate beading along the perimeter of all doors and drawers provides a classical detailing to the interior joinery.  The main salon leads to the two symmetrical guest cabins.  Each features generously sized upper and lower berths and each cabin is outfitted with shared center line bureaus, a design perfected on the many Little Harbors penned by the Fontaine Group.  Each guest cabin has its own en suite facilities and appropriately sized hanging lockers. One of these cabins could easily accommodate crew.

Aft of the main salon along the port side one passes through a galley more typically found on yachts of much larger size.  Beautifully sculpted joinery, abundant counter space, a four burner stove located outboard with a double under-hung stainless steel sink inboard are all components of an excellent sea going galley. The galley is equipped with enough freezer and refrigeration space to keep a young family of six well fed for months at a time.

Opposite the large front opening refrigerator/freezer space, one finds a detailed electrical panel and large watertight door that leads into the walk-in engine room.  It is truly amazing what the designers have fit into this 67’ design.  Most yachts this size are designed with only the interior accommodations in mind.  Fontaine and his team have been able to achieve an excellent accommodations plan while providing an almost commercial quality to the engine room space.  Not one but two or even three people can fit within the engine room where access is provided by walk-through doors from the galley or aft owner’s shower.

The new design boasts additional waterline length added to create a more comfortable and voluminous aft cabin. The owner’s cabin is located aft of the galley where the motion in heavy weather is more comfortable.  The cabin is fit with an oversized center line walk around double berth with settees port and starboard.  The owner’s aft cabin is large and airy with cleverly placed hull ports and deck hatches.

The design brief called for a yacht that could go anywhere with a high level of performance and comfort.  She will be as light as is practical considering the stores and sea kindliness that Lyman-Morse has come to expect on a yacht destined for global travel.

An all up displacement of 60,000 lbs. fully loaded, of which 22,000 lbs. is positioned down low in an externally cast bulb keep, a carbon fiber mast with in boom furling systems and optional carbon rigging will provide exciting sailing performance.

Of course one can always design lighter, narrower, faster yachts, but the objective with this design was to make the fastest boat possible considering the requirements for a shallow draft hull, three private interior cabins, a walk in engine room space, comfort, sea kindliness, and extended range.

A deep hydro-dynamically shaped centerboard extends the draft from the 6.5’ fixed draft to over 12’ when lowered, enabling excellent upwind sailing angles while minimizing wetted surface off the wind.  A retractable hydraulic bow thruster is fitted forward in the forepeak allowing for easier maneuvering in tight quarters.

Designer Comments

Cabot Lyman and his family have had a working relationship with designer Ted Fontaine for nearly thirty years. The relationship started in 1983 when Fontaine, while managing the Ted Hood Design Group, drew the lines for the 55′ ketch JANMAR for a customer of Cabot’s.

After completing JANMAR, Cabot approached Fontaine to design the Sequin 49, an aft cockpit, shallow-draft centerboard ocean voyager. Three were built including Cabot and Heidi Lyman’s own CHEWINK, a boat built for him and his family to sail around the world with his young family. In fact, Cabot and Heidi just returned from a month aboard CHEWINK in the Caribbean.

In 1991, after returning from the family sailing sojourn Lyman continued the relationship with the newly established Fontaine Design Group collaborating on three highly respected cruising yachts including the building of the 60′ aft cockpit cruising sloop WINDWALKER. Upon completion of WINDWALKER, work commenced on building the composite hull, deck and internal structure for Dana and Martha Robe’s 65′ pilothouse sloop SARA JANE.

Prior to A2, the most recent Lyman-Morse/Fontaine Design Group collaboration was the well-known AMELIA. Launched in 2002, she is a 63′ center cockpit pilothouse design. Featuring, a shallow draft keel centerboard hull form, AMELIA is a fast and comfortable sailing platform.

Friendship 36: A New Sailboat from Ted Fontaine

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: January 4, 2013

Friendship 36 rendering

Yacht designer Ted Fontaine spent his formative professional years apprenticing to, and then partnering with, the legendary naval architect Ted Hood at Little Harbor Yachts. Fontaine, who grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, learned his lessons well. When he struck off on his own in 2001, before he became renowned for his fleet of superyachts, he created a handsome daysailer called the Friendship 40, based on an old Friendship sloop he used to see in his local harbor. More Friendships followed, including 53- and 75-footers. Now, with the introduction of the new Friendship 36, you might say Fontaine has returned to roots.

The satisfied owner of a Friendship 40, who loved his boat but had one issue—the nearly 4-foot draft that precluded him from mooring it in the shallow Long Island cove near his home—commissioned the 36-footer. The 36 will draw a mere 32 inches. To achieve this shallow draft, Fontaine modified the underbody, incorporating a deep V-shaped hull and increasing the ballast ratio to accentuate stiffness under sail. The shallow “delta-shaped” hull is also equipped with twin rudders to maximize steering control.

While the design is certainly suited to fiberglass construction, hull number one is being built in Maine by Rockport Marine —well known for their restoration of classic beauties like Bolero and Adventuress—of cold-molded wood over laminated wood frames with plywood bulkheads. But with a full carbon-fiber spar package, this “woody” will hardly be a slave to tradition. In fact, with fully powered, push-button controlled winches, furlers, mainsheet, backstay, and boom vang, the 36 will be a familiar sibling to owners of her slightly bigger sister, the Friendship 40.

A June launch is anticipated. In the meantime, check out Fontaine’s new website for more information and details on other designs from the Portsmouth, Rhode Island-based naval architect and his associates.

Tackling moscow by train and boat.

Our first full day in Moscow started fairly late since we were still catching up on sleep.  Around 1, we finally were able to get our act together and get out the door.

We stopped by a cafe to get some breakfast and headed over to the Red Square.  Since the festival is going on, we had to go through metal detectors.  Once we cleared security, we reached the State Historical Museum which provided an entrance to the Red Square.

fontaine yacht design

We walked the length of the Red Square, passing by the Kazan cathedral.

fontaine yacht design

Under normal conditions, the Red Square is a large walking area with the State Historical Museum on one end and St. Basil's on the other end.  On the sides is the Kremlin wall on one side and then the GUM shopping mall and the Kazan cathedral on the other side.  Presently, the walking area has been considerably narrowed and the fesitval grounds occupying a large space between the Kremlin and the mall.

We even asked a stranger to take our picture!

fontaine yacht design

After walking around the Red Square, we had to leave to meet up with our Metro Tour.

Moscow has famously pretty metro stations so metro tours are quite popular.  We booked a relatively inexpensive tour through a tour group which met outside of the Red Square.

On our way, we passed by the Kremlin gardens and the tomb to the unknown soldier and the eternal flame.

fontaine yacht design

We soon met up with our group which, fortunately, was only 5 people.  Our guide told us that we were going to visit 8 stations during the 1.5 hour tour.

Honestly, a lot of the stations blended in to me so I won't be able to give you a detailed description of all of them.  However, I did learn that there are 222 metro stations and the trains come every 2-3 minutes reliably.  For that reason, Moscow > DC.

One of the first metro stations we visited had bronze statues all over of various depictions.  Many of the statues had superstitions tied to them.  For example, for a statue of the dog, it's held that if you rub the nose of the dog, you'll have good luck.  Consequently, most of the statue is tarnished - except for the nose.  I joked to Tomas that they probably rotate the "good luck" portion of the statue to ensure the entire statue gets polished.

However, I do remember some of the stations.

Novoslobodskaya is a station adorned with stained glass on the walls.

fontaine yacht design

There was also Belarusskaya, which paid tribute to Belarus.

fontaine yacht design

Another station which name I cannot remember but had pretty mosaics in the ceilings.

fontaine yacht design

My favorite station was Komsomolskaya.  It's the busiest station and a hub for other connecting trains.  It was built during Statlin times and he wanted the station to embody beauty to set a good first impression to Russia.

I'd seen pictures of it beforehand since it's the most famous but it's so much more impressive in person.

Look at these ceilings!

fontaine yacht design

Overall it was a very interesting tour.  Not sure of any other city which could offer a metro tour.  DC certainly can't...

After the tour, we headed back of the hotel to rest for a bit.  We had purchased tickets to a tour hour boat down the Moscow river.  The tickets were good for any time on any day and the boats left every 20min.  We decided to knock the tour out that day and headed over to the pier.

We arrived at the pier and saw a boat by the company we had purchased from boarding.  We approached and they shook their head and said it wasn't the right boat.

So we waited for another boat.

Another boat came along by the same company we had purchased from so weapproached them.  Again - we were told it wasn't the right boat and the boat we were looking for was coming.

A third boat came along which was NOT by the company we had purchased from.  By this point, it had been longer than 20min waiting and I was starting to suspect that the correct boat was actually one of the ones which turned us away.   We approached the 3rd boat to ask if they knew which boat we should be on.  However, when we approached,  they waved us aboard without scanning our tickets.

So, we boarded the 3rd boat....which was definitely not ours.

We settled into an upper deck, open air table to take in the views.

We passed by pretty buildings.

fontaine yacht design

The somewhat impressive cathedral of Christ the Savior.

After about hour on the cruise, Tomas remarked that it had been about an hour so we should be turning around soon.  I reminded him that we actually had no idea how long this cruise was or where we would be dropped off.  Since we were on the wrong boat.

Fortunately, it did turn around and took us back to the pier.

For dinner, we decided to go to this burger place, Black Star Burger, which our guide told us about.  Tomas really liked his - I thought mine was OK.  It was a decent size patty with a mountain of Cole slaw on top.  We've realized that apparently Russians dislike getting their hands dirty while eating so some restaurants will give out gloves to use.  This particular restaurant gave out black gloves.

Tomas modeling our dinner.

fontaine yacht design

Since little mum has been asking about pictures which show my feet, I assume she wanted to see my new shoes.  I recently bought Allbirds which are suppose to be super comfortable walking shoes which you wear without socks and can be washed.  I didn't wear them too extensively beforehand, so that was probably my first error.  I also didn't bring another pair of good walking shoes,  which was likely my second error.  The Allbirds were great the first two days without socks.  Midway through the third day, my right foot was quite unhappy. Left foot was a trooper. So, now I have a bandaid on the heel of my right foot and wear socks.

ARABESQUE, Custom Friendship 50

Absolute unrivaled quality is synonymous with the Friendship Yacht Company. Incorporating all the elements from his ever-successful Friendship 40, designer Ted Fontaine has created the FRIENDSHIP 50 to be a luxury daysailer / weekend cruiser whose concept has been imitated, but by no means equaled. Custom designed and built for an experienced yachtsman and previous owner of a Friendship 40, ARABESQUE is as exquisitely appointed as a bespoke sailing yacht could be.

All sailing functions are placed within arm’s reach of the helm enabling precision push button control for the mainsail sheeting and furling, genoa sheeting and furling and the Code sail sheeting and furling. The sailing cockpit is as large as would typically be found on a much larger yacht creating the perfect venue for a cocktail cruise for up to 8 guests comfortably situated around the varnished teak cockpit table. This yacht is the sailing version of a luxurious waterfront living room, ARABESQUE brings a new sense of ease to a day at sea with unmatched elegance and style.
