Built by the Dutch Masters at Holland Jachtbouw in 2012, RAINBOW is quite simply, the best of her breed. One of the most recently launched J-Class reproductions, Dykstra Naval Architects developed RAINBOW from the original plans of this 1937 America’s Cup winner and smoothed her lines to modern hydrodynamic standards, optimized to the new J-Class Rule. Her engineering and construction created a modern classic, built with “cutting edge” technology, engineering and materials, from her “hybrid” diesel/electric drive and electrical system, to her high modulus spar, carbon rigging and electro-hydraulic sail and boat handling systems.
RAINBOW is a true “dual purpose” yacht, serving equally successfully as a “silver service” charter yacht for up to eight guests, or as a grand prix racing yacht of the highest caliber. In cruising mode, the yacht has all attributes for easy operation; hydraulic sail handling, winches, thrusters, and a simple sail-plan. Her entertaining cockpit dresses for comfortable entertaining, lounging and dining, and her interior offers all amenities for gracious living aboard. For racing, pulpits & lifelines are removed as all deck areas are stripped and streamlined for the efficiencies required at the absolute pinnacle of yacht racing. RAINBOW’s record speaks for itself on both counts.

Canterbury J
The Canterbury J Class model originates from the Christchurch Model Yacht Club in New Zealand in response to the problems the club members were experiencing sailing models with finned keels in weedy conditions, a problem that all model yacht skippers will be very familiar with and the Canterbury design is a practical solution that remains very relevant to current social and racing skippers today. The objective of this original design is for a model with good sailing manners, that can be easily transported, can be made at comparative low cost and that can be raced in a variety of conditions including weed.
The Nottingham version is the same model when built and is recognised as such in the UK but as the hull is not taken from an approved Canterbury mould cannot be raced against other Canterbury's outside the UK. If you intend to race outside the UK then you will need to buy a Canterbury.
The principal difference between the Canterbury and the Nottingham is that the ballast for the Canterbury is external, being bolted up to the bottom of the hull to complete the keel whereas the Nottingham version has the same ballast placed inside the hull, which is now a full moulding. The rudder is also slightly different as the lower rudder pintle is different on the Nottingham version and the Nottingham rudder has a small cut out to accommodate the shape of the pintle.
I n other respects the model is the same. The same internal woodwork and deck can be used, also the rigs are the same. Those clubs in the UK that race J will generally adopt the Canterbury Association Rules and a link to these rules is provided on this site.
The build process is slightly different in so far as fitting the ballast externally will require that filler is used to smooth the joint between the ballast and the hull and the hull will then require painting to finish.
This picture shows the ballast, the same for both the Canterbury and the Nottingham 48. The model builder will drill two holes in the bottom of the Canterbury moulding and bolt the ballast up to the hull. The trim weight fits inside the hull and the aluminium strip can be used to support a lifting handle on the deck.
I suggest that a layer of filler is applied to the bottom of the hull and which will be squeezed out as the bolts are tightened, this should avoid any air pockets.

The J Class Endeavour yacht is a sailing yacht that was originally built in 1934 for Sir Thomas Sopwith, a British aviation pioneer and yachtsman. The Endeavour yacht was one of the most famous and successful racing yachts of the J Class, a class of sailboats that were used for racing during the 1930s.
The Endeavour yacht was designed by the naval architect Tore Holm and built by the Camper and Nicholsons shipyard in Gosport, England. She was designed to be fast and sleek, with a 131-foot (40-meter) wooden hull, a towering 173-foot (53-meter) mast, and a total sail area of around 9,000 square feet (836 square meters).
The Endeavour yacht competed in the 1934 America's Cup race against the American defender Rainbow, but was ultimately defeated in a closely contested series of races. The yacht was then sold to a new owner and continued to compete in various racing events throughout the 1930s.
After a period of neglect and disrepair, the Endeavour yacht was purchased by a new owner in the 1980s and underwent a major restoration that brought her back to her former glory. Today, the Endeavour yacht is still actively sailed and is considered one of the most iconic and beautiful racing yachts of all time.
The J Class Association has a wealth of information about the history of the J Class Yachts including the J Class Endeavour.

The J Class yacht Endeavour is for sale – a rare chance to buy one of the most iconic yachts ever built
- Toby Hodges
- February 3, 2016
The J Class Endeavour, Britain’s worthiest America’s Cup challenger to date and often described as the most beautiful J Class ever, is still on the market
Arguably there couldn’t be at a better time to buy one of the most prestigious yachts ever. In recent years the J Class has enjoyed a complete resurgence ( see our J Class guide here ). The result makes for mesmerising viewing, as these most elegant, timeless classics are raced by the world’s best and regularly finish within seconds of each other. It’s like one-design racing for museum pieces.
We had the chance to sail Endeavour in December 2016 – and get this EXCLUSIVE VIDEO FOOTAGE
The J-Class Endeavour powers to windward at the 2012 St Barths Bucket
We have only seen Endeavour race competitively once in the last decade. It was fresh after her 18-month refit at Yachting Developments in New Zealand, when she stole the show at the St Barths Bucket in 2012. This showed the potential of the yacht with famous sail number JK4 in the modern fleet of carbon-rigged Js. Since then however, little has been seen of Endeavour as her owner favoured private cruising.
The J Class wave shows no sign of slowing however. There are more Js competing now than ever before. The Hoek-reconfigured J Class Topaz (J8) launched from Holland Jachtbouw in spring 2015 and Svea followed two years later.
The J Class yacht Endeavour arguably remains the jewel of the fleet. She is the yacht that has come closest to winning the America’s Cup for Britain. Her story reflects the history of the J Class and has helped shape the modern fleet we know today.
Endeavour was designed by C.E. Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholsons in steel in 1934 for aircraft manufacturer Sir T.O.M Sopwith. She was the only J to beat the original Rainbow and considered the most dangerous British challenger to the cup ever. On launching, Endeavour was declared ‘the perfect boat’ by someone that really knew his shapes, Nat Herreshoff.
The J-Class Endeavour in 1934, racing King George V’s Brittania
Sopwith took a scientific approach using his aeronautical experience, and the innovations lavished on Endeavour included the likes of four-speed winches, the first windvane linked to a dial by the helm, and a four sided jib with two clews and sheets, dubbed a ‘quad’.
Following a crew strike over pay, Sopwith replaced the 13 pro sailors with amateurs shortly before leaving for the America’s Cup in the states. This, together with taking off more and more ballast during the series, was largely seen as his undoing.
The J-Class Endeavour after decades in a mudberth
Endeavour sat in her Solent mudberth for three decades following the war, in the hands of a variety of owners. She was once saved from scrap and even sank in the Medina River in the seventies.
Beken’s picture shows the state she reached, a wreck with no rig, keel or interior. But it was when Elizabeth Meyer bought her in 1984, that her resurgence, and in time, that of the J Class, really began. Meyer had Endeavour re-configured by Dykstra Naval Architects, shipped to Royal Huisman and fully restored, before cruising and racing her all around the world.
J-Class Endeavour’s interior today, styled by John Munford
Endeavour underwent an extensive refit again in 2010/11 at Yachting Developments in New Zealand. Dykstra Naval Architects was responsible for the construction, sail plan and deck layout, and Jon Barret, who oversaw the yacht’s first refit as captain at Royal Huisman in 1989, project managed the refit.
The work involved the removal of 40T of material, including 14 deck winches. The remaining winches, hydraulics, electrics, engine and generators were all replaced over 100,000 man-hours. Endeavour left New Zealand with a new deck structure, new rig and sails, a new deck layout, an engine room upgrade and a new crew interior.
Her €17.5m asking price today is perhaps typical for a J Class. But to become a custodian of a cruise and race ready Endeavour, and at such an exciting time, would be priceless.

Factors Affecting Cost
Buying a yacht in Russia is a rather time-consuming and lengthy process that requires the participation of professional yacht brokers. Depending on the condition of the vessel, the year of manufacture, the quality of its equipment, class and size, the acquisition cost can vary greatly. There are several indicators on which the cost of buying a yacht will depend :
- Manufacturer, or shipyard - the most famous manufacturers with expensive products are concentrated mainly in European countries, and the most budget yachts are assembled in shipyards of the countries of Asia and the Middle East;
- Equipment - sometimes the internal filling is made to order, and in some cases it is standard equipment with less power, comfort, speed, etc. In this regard, the cost of ships even from one manufacturer can vary greatly;
- Ship design;
- The age of the yacht.
Also, sailing yachts for sale in Russia cost the buyer less than similar motor lengths, but yachts with a history do not always cost less than recently launched ones. Often, the previous owners are engaged in the modernization of the vessel, installing expensive additional equipment on it or customizing the yacht - in this case, the price for it increases significantly. And sailing yachts often participate in regattas, where they can take prizes and eventually acquire a name - this also leads to a rise in the cost of the vessel.
Note that the cost of a yacht in Russia will be significantly different depending on the length of the vessel. You can always check the final cost of the vessel with a yacht broker, and since this market is very lively, the price can change even during the time during which you pick up a yacht.
You can find out the price of the selected vessel and its technical parameters in our catalog, and you can leave a request for purchase directly on the website, online. To choose a yacht for purchase , you can use the help of our broker for the sale of yachts - our specialists are in collaboration with their colleagues around the world to be able to cover the entire market. Ask our manager your questions to get detailed information on the yacht you are interested in.
We wish you success in conducting transactions on the yacht market!

IJE - a broker's view.
Published 21 September 2021
Senior Partner and Senior Sales Broker Peter Brown talks to Burgess News about IJE, one of nine new additions to our sales fleet .
Watch the ije video below and take the virtual tour at the bottom..
Describe IJE
The owner has a dream build team, one that has built several yachts. Each is a remarkable achievement and IJE, it's safe to say, tops them all. She is a tour de force and the longest Benetti ever built.
The briefest glance will tell you that the beautifully balanced exterior lines bear the distinctive signature of sought-after star studio RWD. The owner's team worked very closely with them to perfect the look of decks seeming to float one above the other.
Inside she has wonderfully informal beach-house style, airy, welcoming and restful, which is perfect for a family yacht. Another stamp of excellence is expert naval architecture by PierLuigi Ausonio.
Most appealing features?
In the main saloon the full-height glass walls can slide back to open the space up. The difference that makes is hard to explain but it completely changes the environment.
Sound becomes softer and you can hear the sea, the air and light change to make it a shaded outside space. The entire experience is so much more restful. It's a break-through piece of design.
The main deck aft has a good-sized pool, open-air dining, a bar, several different lounge areas including a TV lounge - everything families need to spend the day together.
There's a fully equipped lower deck gym with one of the largest sea terraces I've seen on a yacht of this size, and opposite is the tender and toy garage, which is packed with the latest kit.
She has two 12m (40ft) tenders on the foredeck to take extended families ashore together. That longer length means they're faster, more comfortable, carry more people and equipment and have better range.
There are eleven cabins for 22 guests, including a private owner's deck with walkaround sidedecks and a bedroom suite with direct access to the foredeck helipad.
An elevator connects lower to bridge decks and there is corridor access from the lower deck lobby to the beach club so that all generations of the family can enjoy step-free time together.
There's a dedicated cinema, a very private nightclub complete with fully equipped bar, lighting and sound systems and DJ station, and a bridge deck games room with access to the aft deck's firepit lounge.
The main deck has a beauty treatment room and hair salon and a massage room equipped to double as a hospital. She has everything any family could want or need for extended cruising.
Need to know?
Right from the start, she was intended to be a world-cruising family yacht, one that could take the owner and their family cruising in any part of the world, places where the weather is not always reliable. To keep everyone on board comfortable, underway or at anchor, she has two sets of Naiad stabilisers.
In more and more locations anchoring is not allowed to protect reefs and seabeds so she has been fitted with a Rolls-Royce dynamic positioning system to hold position without having to anchor.
Operating in the Mediterranean, yachts are generally well catered for and there are plenty of diversions ashore. When you get off the beaten track, which IJE was designed and built to be able to do, the infrastructure can become indifferent, distances greater, comfort and entertainment on board more important.
IJE delivers the same seven-star experience anywhere in the world. She has always been professionally maintained and was designed to facilitate regular maintenance - another benefit of built-in experience. She is a remarkable achievement and her next owner will be the first to appreciate that.
