Scottish Marina Celebrates 40 Years: Largs Yacht Haven

largs yacht haven scotland's finest marina

With 730 berths, and a safe and sheltered location on the Clyde at the gateway to the west coast cruising grounds among its many attributes, it’s not surprising Largs Yacht Haven continues to hold its reputation as one of finest Scottish marinas writes Sue Pelling .

About this Scottish marina

Largs Yacht Haven, which celebrates its 40 th anniversary this year, is located within the sheltered waters of the Firth of Clyde. Yacht Havens built and opened this Scottish marina back in 1984 from a stretch of virgin beach just to the south of the delightful coastal town of Largs and is now a notable Five Gold Anchor marina with a good reputation.

Not only does keeping a yacht in this marina offer peace of mind in terms of shelter and 24-hour security, but because of its convenient location – approximately 30 miles from Glasgow – Airport, and with train connections – it also attracts commuters as well as locals. The allure of berthing a yacht at the gateway to the west coast of Scotland and spending the spring or summer exploring the western isles has become more and more doable thanks improved travel links and budget airlines.

Its convenient location, and world class sailing area are also among the reason why Largs has become a favourite venue for hosting national and international sailing events. This Scottish marina is home to Largs Sailing Club, the Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing Club, Fairlie Yacht Club, and is the Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust . As you can imagine, it is a hub of activity throughout the year, with the August Bank Holiday Largs Regatta Festival, and the Scottish Two-handed Race Scotland’s two of the most popular local events, which regularly attract a huge following.

Given its broad appeal, you’ll find the facilities at Largs Yacht Haven are high end and offer everything you’d expect from a Yacht Havens facility including the group’s friendly helpful staff that ensure your stay is as stress-free as possible. The marina is staffed 24/7 and accessible at all states of the tide.

Passage Planning for this Scottish marina

The approach to this Scottish marina is via the Largs Channel and, from the south, is between Little Cumbrae Island and Farland Head on the mainland. Navigation lights mark the port and starboard breakwaters (occulting 10 secs). The deepwater approaches to the entrance are marked with a lit safe water mark. (L.Fl.10s).

Because the marina is well-protected by the adjacent Cumbrae Islands and the islands to the west it possible to enter the marina most conditions. However, in a big breeze, significant swell can develop in the Largs channel on the approach.

Cruising Aground

Given its location amidst lochs and islands, there is so much to see and do. The cruising is exceptional with interesting fishing villages and harbours to explore as close as a half-hour sail away. The inner Clyde provides an excellent opportunity for day cruising, while the more expansive west coast and Ireland are just a day’s sail away.

sailing-Clyde-Scotland-racing-near-Largs

For a short hop 4nm away, Millport at the southern end the Isle of Cumbrae is a good option. Known as the ‘Jewel of the Clyde’ this is a great spot for those with families because as well as a sandy beach, there are plenty of shopping, golf, fishing and cycling opportunities.

For another short passage, head to Rothesay (Isle of Bute) just 6nm north. This is a pretty fishing harbour and a lively town with shops, restaurants, and pubs just a few steps from the harbour. The visitor pontoons are in Rothesay harbour and nearby Port Bannatyne.

There is plenty to see and do on Loch Fyne too, with Tarbert 22nm from Largs. This quaint and atmospheric fishing village offers fantastic views from Robert the Bruce’s 14th century castle and it’s a great place for a hike to the pretty shell-lined beach at the end of Pier Road.

Sail approximately 16nm southwest from Largs and you’ll reach Brodick on the Isle of Arran. With plenty of hills and beautiful views it’s another great place for hike, plus the village has lots to offer including hotels, restaurants, and a golf course. Brodick Castle is also well worth a visit.

A trip to Troon Yacht Haven – sister marina to Largs Yacht Haven is a must because as a berth holder not least because you get reciprocal mooring. It’s just 20nm down the coast from Largs and is blessed with beautiful scenery, and some of the finest golf courses in the world. It’s also a recommended place for fine dining with cocktails on the terrace at Scotts, which overlooks the marina.

Largs is not that far, relatively speaking, from Ardrishaig either, just 32nm taking in the scenic Kyles of Bute. Ardrishaig marks the start of the Crinan Canal, which is effectively a short cut to the Argyll coast and islands, Skye, and the Outer Hebrides and beyond.

LARGS VOTED MARINA OF THE YEAR

UK boat owners have voted for Largs Yacht Haven as UK Coastal Marina of the Year 2017 as part of the prestigious Yacht Harbour Association (THYA) annual awards.

The award was proudly received by Carolyn Elder, Largs Yacht Haven’s Marina Director, at the London Boat Show. The ceremony was hosted by TYHA with sponsors GJW Insurance and British Marine.

The prestigious award is the highest accolade in the marina industry with only Gold Anchor accredited marinas nominated. After reaffirming its position as Scotland’s Finest Marina in late-2016 after being awarded Five Gold Anchors again for an unprecedented third successive time, Largs Yacht Haven has now gone one step further to be crowned the UK’s finest.

Commenting on the accolade, Carolyn Elder said, “ What a way to start 2017, we’re absolutely thrilled! I must praise our entire Haven Team for their hard work. It is our staff who really set our marina apart by setting extremely high standards and delivering an incredible service to our berth holders. ”

“ What makes this award extra special is that it was voted for by boat owners in the UK. We have been overwhelmed by the comments and votes we received. We’re extremely grateful to our berth holders and visiting boat owners who voted for us. ”

Once described by Olympic sailor Shirley Robertson as “ the perfect sailing venue ”, Carolyn is hopeful this award will bring a new wave of sailors to Largs, saying, “Largs and the Scottish west coast offers incredible sailing and motorboating opportunities for every type of boater. I really hope this award puts Scotland on the map for offering quality boating experiences.”

Sarah Hanna, the Chairman of TYHA, commented, ” Customers voted in unprecedented numbers for Largs Yacht Haven proving that this 5 Gold Anchor accredited marina provides an exceptional experience for its customers. The marina team, led by manager Carolyn Elder, should be very proud of this achievement. ”

Portavadie Marina were also picked up recognition as runners-up in the Marina of Year (for Marinas with under 250 berths), showing that Scotland’s facilities are showing the way for the rest of the UK.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF LARGS YACHT HAVEN

largs yacht haven scotland's finest marina

1984 – 2024

Largs Yacht Haven means a lot of things to a lot of people – whether it’s your starting point for adventures afloat, a stopping point on a longer voyage, a favourite destination for food, or a favourite place to watch the world go by. But, before it began creating memories for boaters and visitors alike, the area to the south of Largs was a sandy beach originally owned by Lord Glasgow. The Beginnings The area to the south of Largs was a natural sandy beach which lent itself to dredging and land reclamation, ultimately creating a new marina for the Firth of Clyde. With the expertise of the Kalis family (of Lymington Yacht Haven, Hampshire) the vision of a new marina village began to take shape the early 1980s. The main concept of the construction was to do a ‘cut and fill’ exercise, using the dredged sand to reclaim the land area and simultaneously provide sheltered deep water behind breakwaters. Fast forward a few years and Largs Yacht Haven opened its first bridgehead in 1984, providing a new style of marina operation in Scotland. In contrast to many other marinas in the region, Largs permitted marine businesses to freely operate from the site, sub-let refunds were introduced to encourage visitors, and Largs Yacht Haven quickly became a thriving marina village, openly welcoming the public and creating a tourist attraction in its own right. A First For Scotland In 1996, Saturn Sails moved its business operations to Largs Yacht Haven, taking occupancy of its new, state-of-the-art sail loft. The sail loft, which was the first purpose-built loft in Scotland, was uniquely designed to include sunken pits in the floor to allow sail cloth to stay flat on the machines, allowing for high quality manufacturing.

largs yacht haven scotland's finest marina

Little by little, with continual investment and new facilities being added, Largs as we know it today began to take shape. Largs Sailing Club and the RYA Centre of Excellence opened in 1999 following the second highest lottery grant of the time. Shortly after, a new championship slipway was built allowing the Club to host national and international dinghy events, followed by Scotland’s first purpose-built indoor heated marine showroom occupied by Euroyachts. A Royal Connection The Royal Family has a longstanding connection with sailing and the marine industry. The family is known for enjoying time on the water with many Royals also being boat owners. Through her connections to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), we are proud to have welcomed The Princess Royal to Largs Yacht Haven on several occasions. Her visits, many with her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, have often coincided with yacht and dinghy regattas hosted by Largs Sailing Club allowing The Princess Royal to view the facilities ashore as well as going afloat to watch the racing. In 2014, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust opened its Largs Yacht Haven base to allow the Trust to support more young people around the UK. More than 400 young people have been supported in rebuilding their confidence after cancer and the Trust has two uniquely adapted vessels in Largs to accommodate young people who suffer from physical needs. “Largs Yacht Haven is a true water sports centre; a nautical village in its own right.” “Largs Yacht Haven and Largs Sailing Club have helped put Largs on the map as a water sports destination with international allure. Largs Yacht Haven breathes respect for nature… it is green in both the literal and figurative sense. Environmental awareness is obvious throughout the marina, while the marina manager and marina team lead by example.” – The Yacht Harbour Association Assessor, 2019 Present Day Fast forward to present day and Largs Yacht Haven is now the largest and most popular marina in Scotland with over 700 berths, boatyard space for over 300 boats and dry berthing for a further 100. With restaurants, cafes, shops and a variety of marine services on site, the marina has become a unique destination for landlubbers and boaters alike. The marina was Scotland’s first to receive the highly acclaimed Five Gold Anchor award in 2007 and now supports employment for over 100 full-time jobs for the community. The vast cross-section of watersports activities on-site puts Largs on the map internationally, becoming a highly renowned destination across yachting, dinghy sailing and racing communities. www.yachthavens.com

Largs Yacht Haven

Largs yacht haven has to be one of the finest marinas to start exploration, or indeed to provide a base for ongoing exploration, of the west coast of scotland..

Well known as a beautiful sailing and cruising destination, the area can be a slog to reach for anyone living south of the Border. However, Glasgow is just an hour away by train or a 40-minute car journey, and with its big airport and rail connections, access from much of the rest of the UK suddenly becomes easier.

The town of Largs itself has a very touristy feel, meaning it can be a little barren in the winter months but full of buzz during the summer. The marina is not in the middle of town, so it is a short walk to the various amenities there. However, on site there is almost everything you would need and, though major provisioning requires a trip to town, anyone visiting for more than a day would also want to head that way.

Naturally sheltered

Both the island of Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae do a good job of protecting the marina entrance. This makes entry surprisingly easy even in an onshore breeze

Event venue

Thanks to the sheltered waters in the Largs Channel, many classes choose the venue for big championships, meaning the on-site sailing club can be busy as can the waters surrounding the marina

Facilities onsite

Most of what you need can be purchased in the marina itself, with restaurants, delis and chandleries all on site. However, a walk into Largs itself is required for bigger or specific items

Largs Sailing Club

The Sailing Club is not directly affiliated with the Yacht Haven but welcomes visiting yachtsmen and the two have a strong relationship

Cruising grounds

Being on the west coast of Scotland, you have immediate access to some of the world’s best loved cruising grounds. With the many nearby islands and lochs, options for day and weekend sails are numerous

Walking into town is doable but is roughly 1km away. In Largs there are the usual shops, plus family attractions like the Vikingar viking experience building
