Reinventing Iconic: On Board the Riva 110 Dolcevita

Iconic style on a larger scale – Riva brings the feel of its famous runabouts to its 33.5-metre superyacht. Risa Merl learns how...

Since Brigitte Bardot was first spotted on board her Riva Super Florida Nounours off Saint-Tropez in the 1960s, the Riva brand has been synonymous with glamour, speed and classic good looks. It’s a heady combination that has earned the Italian builder a loyal fan base. Vintage Rivas are so legendary, in fact, they are some of the few yachts to increase in value as they age – the last wooden-hulled Aquarama to be built was sold at auction for $975,000 (£763,000) nearly 40 years after its launch.

The question was, as Riva moved into building fibreglass motor yachts in the 2000s, could the style, grace – and success – of a classic Riva ever be replicated on a larger scale? The builder’s latest fibreglass flagship, the 33.5 metre 110' Dolcevita, is specifically designed in the hopes of answering this query with a resounding yes.

“Bringing the iconic Riva styling into a larger boat was the target since the beginning of the project,” says Giordano Pellacani, head of sales and marketing at Riva, under the Ferretti Group umbrella. “If you look at the previous [large] Riva models, they were not exactly in that style.” The Dolcevita is a step up from the 29.9 metre Corsaro model that, while good-looking in its own right, did not carry forward the trademark Riva styling to the same extent that the Dolcevita aims to.

Riva embarked on a thorough review and development process, spending twice as long in the planning phase as they usually would on a project. “We interviewed many customers and found they wanted something that reminded them of smaller Rivas, with attention poured into our classic details – but on a megayacht,” Pellacani says, referring to Riva’s trademark use of mahogany wood, gleaming stainless steel and rich leathers. These features loom large on the Dolcevita, but with a modern twist. The team at Officina Italiana Design – the exclusive designer of Rivas since 1994 – was inspired by classic Rivas but was careful not to create a retro boat. The new Dolcevita had to perfectly balance modern styling with the timeless luxury that clients associate with Riva.

“Riva design centres around clean, spare lines, resulting in elegant boats,” says the CEO of Officina Italiana Design , Sergio Beretta. “The 110' Dolcevita is in the spirit of Riva tradition. The lines are clean and elegant, including throughout the model’s interior, where the style was personalised to suit the owner’s requirements.” With an integrated flybridge and a silver-grey paint job, the 110' Dolcevita has a sporty look. Gaze closer, however, and you’ll notice sinuous exterior lines that are detailed yet well-balanced, providing just enough handsome Riva styling while meeting the design team’s maxim that less is more. The black windows on the main deck form a continuous band, a feature that defines the exterior but is best appreciated from inside, where such glazing allows for 270-degree views.

“The saloon has unusual windows that run for most of the yacht’s profile, creating a sense of visual space and breadth aft because there is no structure,” says Mauro Micheli, chief designer of Officina Italiana. “From an engineering point of view, it was an interesting challenge. The idea was, how can we give something to owners that no one else has in this size range? You might see windows like this on a much larger yacht, like Vava 2 or Musashi . But how could we create this atmosphere on a smaller yacht? When we told the engineers what we wanted, they said, ‘You’re crazy’.”

To conjure up an open feeling reminiscent of a Riva runabout inside a superyacht was no small feat. Riva’s engineers devised a “spider structure” that allowed for huge windows supported by minuscule mullions. Four transversal and four longitudinal pieces of stainless steel combine to make a frame that is attached to the hull, supporting the stress of the yacht and connecting the hull and superstructure. The result is what Pellacani calls “the crystal palace” – a light-filled interior with seamless windows, remarkable indoor-outdoor continuity and panoramic views.

The abundance of glass lets in massive amounts of light to the wood-filled interior, illuminating the high-gloss joinery. “We used a lot of wood, as per Riva tradition, but in this case we went for rosewood,” Micheli says. Rosewood is similar to mahogany, but has darker veining and a dense grain that makes it very durable, and the wood takes a polish well.

For 70 per cent of its boats built these days, Riva uses pre-engineered woods to avoid mistakes, knots or misalignments showing in the veneer. “For Dolcevita, we opted to use real wood and keep the defects in, we wanted to see them, then apply our love of detailing,” Pellacani says. “We use more material this way – because sometimes you need quite a big piece for the furniture – which is reflected in the price point.”

The wood is refined by a team of in-house carpenters, the same craftsmen who work on smaller Rivas. Real wood, in all its natural glory and coated in gleaming varnish, certainly elicits the richness of a classic Riva launch. Deckheads are raised and the ceiling inset with shining rosewood, which gives a warmth to the spacious saloon.

To complement the light-reflecting rosewood, Officina Italiana Design brought in a pale-grey matte finish for the walls, which matches the light grey sofa. The interior has an understated elegance. Classic nautical materials combine with modern furnishings, such as the glass dining room table paired with leather and stainless-steel chairs. “There are a lot of details in leather and stainless steel that is the leitmotif for the interior and exterior,” Micheli says. The Riva branding is signalled in this and in more literal detailing, like the curved silver door handles imprinted with a Riva logo.

Nine Dolcevita hulls have been sold so far, heading off to locations ranging from Asia and the Middle East to Europe and the US. Half of those owners already have a smaller Riva and were looking for something to represent their love of the brand on a bigger scale. Hull five was the first to be seen by the public at the Monaco Yacht Show last September; the first four were delivered quickly and are being enjoyed by their owners. The new offering seems to appeal to both to Riva loyalists and to those looking for interesting amenities in a smaller package.

Feedback from one owner, who was looking for “big boat features but on a smaller scale” inspired Dolcevita’s unusual layout. While nearly every large yacht has the guest passageway to starboard and the crew to port, this Riva has the hallway leading to the full-beam owner’s cabin on the port side.

“We looked at our bigger 40- to 50-metre boats, and one of the things they must have is a dayhead near the main saloon, because owners throw dinner parties and do not want people in the guest cabins,” Pellacani says. “So we decided to have a very large dayhead on the left side of the main deck.” This dayhead is tucked under the port-side superstructure, set in a wide hallway just before the door to the owner’s suite.

Like the saloon, the master cabin is adorned with rosewood, grey soft goods and carpeting, and chocolate-brown leather chairs. Stainless-steel details also decorate the raised ceiling and are used for the wardrobe door handles. A smoked glass wall across from the bed adds depth and conceals a television. This recurrent theme of “Riva details”, reaffirming the yacht’s ties to its heritage, is carried through into the guest cabins as well. Four are found below, with the layout customisable. The owner of hull five opted for three VIPs and one cabin with twins and a Pullman berth. The rosewood details are even seen in the guest bathrooms.

Exterior spaces aim to recreate the feeling of flying jauntily around the harbour on a much smaller Riva. One such space is the foredeck lounge, accessed via a stairway leading forward from the starboard side. This sunpad-laden spot encapsulates the feeling of sprawling out on the back of an Aquarama, but with even more comfort. The foredeck lounge can also be customised to the owner’s wishes: this one has a rumble seat all the way forward, while another Dolcevita has a spa pool built on the bow.

The stylish helm stations bear the hallmarks of a classic Riva with more wood, leather and stainless details. A second helm is found on the sundeck, which also brings in carbon fibre detailing in the hardtop.“The Riva tradition also is for the exterior area to have a lot of details,” Pellacani says. This presented another challenge, as all the exterior elements of the yacht – from the ceiling of the flybridge to the inside of railings to the bases of (fixed) deck furniture – are painted to match the hull and perfectly polished and flawless to meet Riva’s standards. “It’s very expensive and very detailed, and to paint these items and protect them from scratching during construction is challenging.”

Intense attention to detail is what makes Riva stand out, for instance installing screws and then painting their heads in the same colour as the hull. So it makes sense when Beretta says, “We don’t think of 110' Dolcevita as a ‘superyacht’ – she is simply a yacht built in the spirit of iconic Rivas.”

Iconic is an overused word. Many claim it, yet few are truly deserving. The undoubtedly iconic Riva runabouts like Ms Bardot’s are an exception. Only time will tell if the 110' Dolcevita will reach such legendary heights. So far she is certainly making Riva fans sit up and take notice – and place their orders, too.

Riva Aquarama

There are boats that look cool for a year. Others have such classic looks that can be reinvented from generation to generation. Then there are a handful that stand the test of time. The Riva Aquarama is one of those. Carlo Riva’s creation, celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August, was an instant hit when it arrived in 1962.

Three years later, no other boat enjoyed the Aquarama’s elevated brand status; the owners included movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison and a small group of royals, which added to the mystique in the public’s eye. But most owners were high-net-worth individuals who were willing to buy an Aquarama for about the same price as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Italy’s most expensive car in the mid-’60s.

The boat’s beautiful mahogany exterior, sexy curves, and American engines made it an unbeatable proposition for the rich and famous at a time when the world was searching for new, modern status symbols after World War II. The Aquarama—which took its name from the cinematic technique panorama—quickly found a home along the French and Italian Rivieras. But eventually it became synonymous with Monaco. The principality was fast becoming the upscale, James-Bondish gathering point of celebrities and royalty that seals its reputation today. A harbor of gleaming mahogany Rivas added to the allure.

Riva Aquarama

The Riva Aquarama was an instant hit when it arrived in 1962.  Riva/Assouline

“I know it’s an inanimate object, but if you have a passion and love for beautiful machines, as I do,” says Bruce Paddock, who owns the Aquarama Special Mistral II, “then you’ll identify with the design, performance and quality of the work. When you put those elements together, it creates a mystique and desire between the owner and the object.”

The Aquarama has been named the “Best Runabout Ever” by multiple boating magazines. I had the opportunity to write a book that will be published later this summer about the Aquarama’s history for the centenary of Carlo Riva’s birthday and the 60th anniversary of the first Aquarama, Lipicar—named after Riva’s three daughters, Lia, Pia and Carla. Before researching the book, I’d assumed the Aquarama was a typical Italian boat, long on style, short on engineering and performance.

How wrong I was. One of the highlights of the project was spending a day at the helm of Gala , an Aquarama Super (the second model in the series), which was hull number 425 built in 1970 on Lake Iseo, near Riva’s historic Sarnico factory.

Riva Aquarama

The boat was meticulously crafted from wood.  Riva/Assouline

Owned by Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi, Gala was a stunning wooden boat, with ivory-colored upholstery, a Calax-style steering wheel inspired by a 1958 Chrysler 300, and side throttles. Unlike most boats, the helm is on the left side. Riva had decided early on to model the Aquarama after the finest luxury cars with throaty American marine engines ( Gala had twin 320 hp Rivas, which were modified Crusaders). The hand-built wooden hulls were built on a production line like cars for quality control and timely delivery.

At the dock, Gala had a stately presence, with pinstripes on the light-colored mahogany foredeck, a beautiful reddish-tinted hull, gleaming chrome, and a wraparound automotive-style windshield which was radical for the day. The oversized steering wheel felt perfect for a boat that would’ve been compared to a Cadillac or Lincoln in its day. And the side throttles were also modeled on a car to make it more intuitive for new owners who were not necessarily boaters. The hull had been designed for ocean running—after Riva had been chided by a longtime friend for building “lake boats.”

We didn’t find any big seas running around Lake Iseo, but the lake, with mountains in the distance, was a perfect backdrop to this 52-year-old beauty. Galassi, who had wanted an Aquarama as a child, believes that the Aquarama is the most perfect design ever. “The sound of the engines, the wood, the beautiful sweep of the hull, the performance,” he says, listing the attributes.

Riva Aquarama

Carlo Riva’s creation is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August.  Riva/Assouline

He forgot the word fun. It was such an enjoyable boat to drive, turning sharp with the twin engines. When the hull slapped it was a much softer sound than fiberglass. There was a sense of grace and performance, especially considering its age, that I hadn’t felt before. I had the helm a few hours but let the captain dock it, as the mahogany finish was flawless and I didn’t want to leave any scratches. I know it’s over-hyping it, but I have to say my day aboard Gala— probably because I knew so much about Aquarama’s history—was one of my most memorable days on the water after 30 years of testing boats.

Beyond the beautiful, varnished wood and chrome work, features like the bow anchor locker, with a clever self-retrieving anchor system, and the soft canvas top had a huge spring inside to make it easy to raise and lower the canvas when it started to rain. Wicker drink trays were built into the backs of the forward seats, and a beautiful sunpad was designed over the engines. The transom was sloped to allow easy access to the water. The details had clearly been set and then reset by Riva and his team.

Riva Aquarama

The owners included movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison and a small group of royals.  Riva/Assouline

Despite the beauty, Aquarama owners love to use their boats, rather than groom them for classic boat shows. “We put 650 miles on the hull during our first season, and that was on weekends,” says Sean Brown, who with wife Delphine, bought The Brown Knight in 1998 and keeps it at their home on Lake George, NY. “This boat runs the way boats should run—fast and stable with no trim tabs. I don’t want a show queen.”

Among American classic boat owners, who tend to favor domestic brands like Chris-Crafts and Garwoods, the Aquarama is an outlier. But there are large classic Riva collections, including many Aquarama owners, on Lake Tahoe, Lake George, the Great Lakes and freshwater lakes in Florida. Among the 760 completed Aquaramas, 650 are still around. The most historic models in the best condition continue to fetch high six-figure prices.

Riva 82 Diva Review: Prima Donna of Yachting

riva yacht review

We wouldn’t be wrong to declare Riva the most precious nautical brand, so every new model from Italian manufacturers deserves special attention – and even more so when it introduces several significant changes

Exploring the Sporty Exterior of Riva 82 Diva

The fresh style features of the new Diva are easiest to spot from the outside, because the new model looks like one of the modern crossovers, with side balconies and a large beach club, the logical continuation of which is the cockpit, separated from the aft platform by a glass wall. On the other hand, the new Riva has a very sporty, masculine silhouette reminiscent of sports cars of the 20th century, the most prominent detail of which is the stainless steel grill that covers the engine exhausts. The model also has a large top bridge with a hard cover, which doesn’t impact her sporty appearance, but is masterfully integrated into the silhouette.

Seventh Sense

When we first saw Riva 82 Diva moored in Cannes , we immediately noticed stern side opening, one of the freshest trends in yacht design, which significantly increases the surface of the sunbathing area. The stern platform lies very close to the sea, which enhances the ‘beach feeling’ on that part of the yacht.

Riva 82 Diva side view

Right next to the platform, there’s a garage, large enough for a 3.95-meter long jet-tender and hides it completely, both from view and from wear and tear. On it, there is a large sundeck separating the stern from the cockpit. In the cockpit, there is a lacquered mahogany folding table engraved with the Riva logo, and two longitudinal benches seating three people on each side.

Riva 82 Diva aft platform

The cockpit is neither visually nor conceptually separated from the aft platform, but seems to stretch towards the sea. The black glass that separates cockpit from the salon has a mirrored black layer enhancing the glazing of the surroundings, while the passages also have dark glass surfaces that allow maximum visibility from the cockpit.

The docking controls are hidden at the end of the left side passage, while on the right side there is a small sink that is handy for washing hands after mooring.

Riva Diva sunbathing area

The passage leading to the bow is protected by a tall gray railing that reaches hip level, and is see-through in the middle. There is an additional U-shaped seat on the bow, while the tip of the bow is equipped for anchoring.

The fly bridge stretches over 40 sqm and is extremely carefully appointed, with two large chaise longues aft, two chairs in front of them, and a large bar served by a long bench mid-bridge. In front of the helm, there is a large sunpad for up to four guests, protected by a hard top with a see-through central part. The helm station is on the left, equipped with two Simrad screens and cameras.

A Closer Look Inside: The Elegant Interior of Riva 82 Diva

Upon entering the main deck, we were pleasantly surprised by the layout and organization of the space. In the salon, on the left side, there are one freestanding armchair, one L-shaped sofa and a small lacquered mahogany table, while the TV is on the right. The refrigerator and a small bar are installed in the right side.

Riva 82 Diva interior, salon

Full-height windows in the salon allow daylight to seep in, while the dining room is separated and elevated, accessible from the salon via two stairs. Those stairs also enlarge height below deck, where the cabins are.

The most interesting point of the main deck is the galley, positioned right next to the helm, and boasting access to the deck on both sides, as well as a stove with a hood on the left side. The galley and the helm are separated from the dining room by a elevating glass partition incorporating a small bar, a solution that is as practical as it is elegant.

All the cabins are beautifully appointed, with elegant white paneled walls and floors complementing mirrored and lacquered surfaces of the contrasting dark wooden furniture.

Many details, sophisticated materials and fabrics, as well as delicate style make this new Riva the perfect example of the brand’s visual DNA, leaning heavily on elegance and charm.

Smooth Cruising: Riva 82 Diva’s Performance on Water

On our test, the new model proved to be easy to maneuver, and we spent a truly enjoyable morning in the sunny waters of Cannes, chatting with the skipper, who was the one to bring the new unit from La Spezia to the Cannes boat show. He cruised peacefully at 24 knots, with a consumption of 570 liters per hour, with a full 6,000-liter fuel tank.

Riva 82 Diva aerial view

While cruising at 22 knots and 2000 rpm, consumption fell down to 490 liters, so we can roughly estimate the average fuel consumption at about 20 liters per mile. With 12 people on board, we achieved a maximum speed of 28 knots, but with – instead of the standard 2 x 1800 MAN V12 engines – the 1900-hp option, the speed easily exceeds 30 knots.

Our unit was equipped with a gyro stabilizer and fins, which helped make our cruise serene and calm. Built for the American market, the new Riva is equipped with a supertropical air condition system, as well as a more powerful 27 kW generator (standard is 17 kW). Finally, the last new feature is the ‘daily’ fuel tank, installed in the engine, room with a capacity of 2,500 liters.

The Riva 110 Dolcevita is a masterclass in understated excellence, as expected from such a powerhouse brand

The global market for motor yachts of this size is febrile, cut-throat and small. A successful production run of a new model might amount to a couple of dozen units over its three- or four-year life, often much less, while development costs are measured in millions. Certain truths are held to be self-evident. Ignore them at your peril. It’s a brave shipyard that takes a risk.

The designers of the new Riv a 110 Dolcevita can perhaps be forgiven if it bears a passing resemblance to a lot of other shipyards’ attempts to appeal to the same small set of customers. You can tell with a glance what you’re getting: a full-beam master suite on the main deck, four spacious guest ensuites down at the waterline in that beamy hull and a spectacular saloon with huge windows to open up picture-perfect views of the seascape.

What this analysis doesn’t acknowledge, though, is the power of the Riva brand. It’s double-edged. Its effects are felt both inside the shipyard and out. Some customers, still, are happy to suppress their powers of rational discernment and buy a boat simply because it has a Riva badge on the side.

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-running-shot-side-view

Back in the drought of the 1980s, such was the management’s reliance on this dwindling band of devotees that its complacency nearly sank the shipyard. Luckily it was saved, first by Stephen Julius and then by Norberto Ferretti, and to such effect that that happy band, apparently, is no longer dwindling.

Effortless chic.

Inside the organisation, the Riva name creates pressures that do not afflict other shipyards. Of course every successful manufacturer has its own production standards, but at Riva the designers and craftspeople are trying to satisfy standards which have been created for them by their company’s own mythology.

While it might not be realistically feasible, these days, to build their boats to a higher technical standard than other elite production shipyards, they nevertheless have to look like they do. Such are the expectations of romantics smitten by pictures of Brigitte Bardot in her plywood Riva speedboat .

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-cockpit

To take a stroll through a new Riva motor yacht is a visual and tactile experience of the kind you get in custom superyacht yards. The emphasis on surfaces and finish quality, whether it’s the steel and marble in the bathrooms or the leather and lacquer in the living areas, underlines the importance of creating the correct impression. It’s expensive, and it has to look expensive – but without trying too hard.

Understated excellence

The design language in the 110 Dolcevita is classic modernist, shown to best effect not just in the stunning saloon but also in the pared-back white panelling of the lower-deck corridor and in the absence of such distracting detailing as handles or hinges.

The cabins’ wardrobe doors would try the patience of the most dedicated design buff, staring back blankly and offering no clue whatsoever to the secret of how to get them open. (Push the vertical panel, insert fingers in rebate and pull.)

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-lower-deck

With a hull nearly 24ft (7.27m) wide and no shortage of height in its profile, the 110 Dolcevita can boast some well-proportioned accommodation spaces, with headroom of 6ft 7in (2.01m) or more pretty much everywhere, and full-size berths in all the cabins.

The double in the forward guest ensuite on the starboard side can split into two berths – each 31in (79cm) wide – and with its drop-down Pullman deployed this would make a popular kids’ cabin.

Noteworthy options in the 110 Dolcevita’s interior include a huge, full-beam VIP suite down below, formed by merging the two midships ensuites. You can also select a pair of folding balconies on the main deck, at each end of the table, which would make an unbeatable spot for dinner on a warm, still evening.

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-saloon

Even leaving aside these temptations, though, along with the assured interior design and exemplary finish, it would be hard at this stage to pinpoint exactly what the 110 Dolcevita offers that others don’t. Understated excellence is everywhere but those unique little touches that one expects of a Riva seem harder to come by.

Even the flooding tender garage – a superb system that sees the beach club platform continue its descent into the briny until the sea comes in to float the Williams 505 – is a Ferretti Engineering innovation, which has been seen on other yachts from the Group.

The internal steel frame of the superstructure, on the other hand, is something novel. Completely hidden, it all makes sense once you realise that those slender mullions and supports between the saloon windows, which make a spectacular success of such an expansive glazed area, simply wouldn’t be strong enough to support the flybridge if they were made of glassfibre.

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-flybridge

Up on the flybridge itself, meanwhile, the playfully mismatched glass panels in the hardtop might not be risky enough to be described as brave, but they are certainly unique, and as an example of the sort of flair that Riva buyers seek, they are both practical and pretty.

You won’t find anything like them in any other production boat. Their daring asymmetry provides a hint as to the core feature of the 110 Dolcevita – the design touch that provides the yacht with its personality, and helps make it a Riva.

You need to stand on the bow to appreciate it. Look aft, down the starboard side, and the walkway descends via the conventional external companionway to the main deck, from which you can enter the saloon via the side door, or continue aft to the cockpit.

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-side-deck

Look down the port side, however, and the walkway takes you up a gentle slope to the flybridge, with access to the helm station, the upstairs dining table and aft to the sunbathing area.

Performance

It’s not just those hardtop panels that are asymmetrical. It’s the entire yacht, done in such a measured, understated way that you hardly notice. It’s very Riva.

The other thing that’s very Riva is the 110 Dolcevita’s performance. A Riva has to go well – speed is part of the brand promise – and a pair of 2000-series MTU V16s in a splendidly engineered machinery space provide a whopping 5,276hp.

riva-110-dolcevita-yacht-review-running-shot-aerial-view

Our test yacht, well loaded with around seven-and-a-half tonnes of fuel and water and the substantial tender in the garage, clocked a two-way best of 26.8 knots.

A heavy boat will always feel that way unless its power-to-weight ratio is unusually favourable, and that’s not an engineering possibility in motor yachts of this size. But the 110 Dolcevita had quite lively acceleration, running from tickover to 20 knots in 15 seconds, and to 26 knots in just 15 more.

In fact, it provided an involving drive, with precise if sedate handling, and a solidity in the cruise, which promises to translate into comfort on passage. It was quiet, and at a cruising lick of around 23 knots its safe range would be around 400 miles. Pretty impressive for such a big boat, but just what we expect from a Riva.

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

Divers have found five bodies in the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials told news agencies and local media Wednesday, leaving one person still missing.

Three bodies were brought ashore and two others were also found inside the shipwreck, Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, told the Associated Press, after divers were photographed by the agency unloading body bags. Cocina did not identify the deceased.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight – including a 1-year-old girl – were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Among the passengers was Mike Lynch, 59, the British founder of the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founder of the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. This summer, he was acquitted of all charges after a decadelong U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

Among those missing were Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and attorney Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York who represented Lynch in the recently concluded legal battle, and his wife, Neda. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among the survivors.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said.

with a slender form, ONE 16 transforms a jet ski into a 6-meter boat

Amor jimenez chito presents one 16.

The first prototype of ONE 16 has been launched and tested in Spain, available for sea trials throughout the summer in Puerto de la Duquesa, Málaga. Designed by Amor Jimenez Chito of Loveworks Design and ONE Water Toys, this innovative hull transforms a jet ski into a 6-meter boat , capable of hosting up to six people in addition to the rider. Its design features sleek, modern lines, with the main focus given to the functionality within the deck.

The ONE 16 allows jet ski owners to share their passion with friends and family. Some can sunbathe while sipping a drink and listening to music, while others can enjoy the adrenaline rush offered by the personal watercraft . When the jet ski is removed, the slide that houses its front transforms into an inviting pool, gently gliding into the sea. The anchor is located in the bow hatch, which has been conceived to be walkable to facilitate easy embarking and disembarking.

from jet ski to boat

Working on bespoke interiors and exteriors for yachts and superyachts, Amor Jimenez Chito understands the importance of having a clear brief, conducting market analysis, and identifying user needs. Prior to the design phase of the ONE 16, designer Amor Jimenez Chito conducted market analysis and identified user needs, leading to the creation of a hull capable of bridging the gap between the high-speed excitement of a jet ski and the shareable enjoyment of a boat. In recent years, the market has seen a rise in adventure boats: young owners seek experiences, and in the superyacht sector, this has been highlighted by the rising popularity of explorers.

The hull has been optimized for cruising speeds of around 18-20 knots, with a top speed of 30 knots when using a 170-hp jet ski. Standard equipment includes a Hertz or Fusion audio system and storage area suitable for a 12V portable refrigerator. A removable bimini provides protection from the sun, and boat buckles securely connect the jet ski to the hull. Its platform is plug-and-play, easy to connect in just one minute, and compatible with major brands such as Seadoo and Yamaha. In the bow area, there is a large table that, when lowered, converts into a spacious sunbathing area. Aiming to attract newcomers to boating, it is priced to be affordable, providing an accessible entry point to boating.

designed for both thrill seekers and sunbathers in the sea

The ONE 16 was born from analyzing the needs of many jet ski users. ‘While they enjoy the thrill of riding a jet ski, a significant share also seeks a more relaxed experience with friends and family. As a result, many owners sell their jet skis after a couple of years as they look for an alternative way to enjoy the water,’ says Amor Jimenez Chito. The ONE 16 was conceived to offer a solution that allows users to enjoy both the excitement of a jet ski and the comfort of a boat. It is also conceived to enable jet ski rental companies to expand their offerings to a wider range of customers, making it more appealing to groups of friends who want to spend a day at sea. Additionally, it can also serve as a tender for yachts starting from 20 meters or be used to transport people ashore or from the marina to a moored vessel.

Among the available options, in addition to a rigid bimini, wakeboard rack, and a premium audio system with a subwoofer, owners can choose from a wide range of vibrant, attention-grabbing colors of the hull and upholstery to make the boat reflect their personality. In the design process, Amor Jimenez Chito selected bold hues that invite a sense of adventure, intentionally moving away from the conventional white and blue. For further customization, the hull can be wrapped with a bespoke design.

Engineered by visma naval architects

After evaluating the feasibility of the concept designed by Loveworks Design, Cádiz-based Visma Naval Architects optimized the naval architecture, materials, and finally, the structure. The weight distribution was optimized to ensure that the jet ski can be easily inserted into the hull of the ONE 16 and that the boat remains stable even when all six people onboard are on the same side. As it can be coupled and decoupled with the jet ski, all required calculations and analyses were doubled: the naval architects studied the behavior of the hull with both the jet ski and the hull alone.

Another challenge was the interface between the personal watercraft and the hull, which has been studied from both a structural and hydrodynamic perspective. ‘We had to ensure continuity with the design of the hull, maintaining the waterlines unaffected and avoiding unnecessary resistance. It was crucial to keep the flow within the boundary layer, maintaining laminar flow, and preventing turbulence around the interface between the jet ski and the hull,’ explains Manuel Viseras, CEO of Visma Naval Architects.

Following the plans developed by Málaga-based engineering firm KDKomposites was responsible for building the prototype. ‘The biggest challenge was to manufacture a boat with the exact draught, to ensure an easy connection with the jet ski, and obviously to ensure the required buoyancy and optimal stability. We are proud to say that we were able to build the boat according to the optimal weight distribution and structure given to us by the naval architects,’ says Oscar Bustos, CEO of KDKomposites, and former professional sailor.

Relying on this team of naval architects and boat builders, Amor Jimenez is already looking at the future development of the brand. ‘Currently, we are manufacturing the second unit of the ONE 16 using vacuum infusion methods, which will help us lower the weight of the hull, thus further improving performance. Once ready, this second unit will be designated for charter use.’

Riva Domino 86

riva yacht review

ytgnov17riva525.jpg

I’ve confessed it before, and I’ll admit my weakness again: I love classic mahogany Riva speedboats. Aquarama, Tritone, Junior, it doesn’t matter, I love ’em all. As a result, I tend to review each new Riva model with great expectations and, at the same time, a rather high bar to clear. The Domino, a new 86-foot speedster, doesn’t disappoint.

A year ago, we brought you news of the then-latest Riva yacht, the 92- foot Duchessa (“Hold That Lineage!,” December 2008). You might wonder why Riva would introduce another new model so soon and so close in length, but these are two entirely different animals. The Duchessa was a large yacht made smaller, a downsized but still very luxurious offshoot of Riva’s voluminous flagship, the 115-foot Athena.

The Domino, by contrast, is an upscale version of a smaller boat, owing much of her inspiration to the 63-foot Vertigo and 68-foot Ego models. Her profile is low and sleek, reminiscent of earlier Riva sportboats, and her beam is nearly two feet less than that of the Duchessa. As any designer will tell you, that difference means less volume and weight, a higher length-beam ratio, and the expectation of better performance. The Domino delivers in spades, reaching a top speed of 38 knots and doing it with very little fuss. She is a luxurious yacht, to be sure, but is considerably closer to her mahogany speedboat roots than her larger sisters.

riva yacht review

The Domino incorporates a disappearing aft bulkhead found on many of the smaller Riva dayboats, enabling her guests to enjoy the feeling of an open boat when the weather is cooperative. There’s a difference, though, that is not apparent upon first glance at her exterior. This is not a hardtop sport cruiser, but rather, she has a full flying bridge worked into her low profile. As a result, there is no opening panel in her hardtop above the salon, as on smaller Rivas. Instead, a fixed glass panel forward of the flying bridge brings lots of light into the dining area and lower helm, and is fitted with a sliding shade to block the sun’s rays when desired.

It’s a nice compromise that enables the Domino to retain a sporty, open feeling below while still providing the amenities of a flying bridge, with three helm seats and a large sunpad. The helm station forward starts out low and then folds down when not in use to lower the profile even further. Consistent with this theme, there is no windshield on this first hull, but Riva tells me one is being considered as an option on future Dominos. In consideration of this styling emphasis, the side rails around the flying bridge are fairly low, and nonexistent forward and aft, so a bit of care is in order for topside guests while underway.

The railing situation is better on the main deck, where a second sunpad is located on the foredeck, well protected by bulwarks and sturdy rails at the sides. Grab rails also surround the comfy six-place dinette that lies between the sunpad and the pilothouse windshield. Aft, there are safety gates to either side of a spacious U-shaped sitting area, which can be open or shaded at will, thanks to a retractable awning that extends from the back of the flying bridge.

The gates guard steps that lead down to the integral swim platform. A retractable passerelle extends up to 14 feet for access to the aft deck when stern-moored. Between the steps, an opening transom lifts to reveal a garage for storing a RIB and a personal watercraft.

riva yacht review

The deckhouse is essentially one large space, and when the aft bulkhead is fully open, it creates a rather magnificent space for entertaining, whether underway, on the hook, or dockside. In addition to the sitting area at the transom, there’s also a dinette for six on the aft deck. Should you prefer to dine inside, a table for eight guests slides out of the port houseside between the salon and pilothouse. Salon seating includes two double sofas and one triple, all in white leather. A 46-inch TV and a CD/DVD/MP3 system with an iPod docking station links to speakers in the salon, pilothouse, aft deck, and flying bridge. One of my favorite features of the salon and dining area is the double row of windows. The upper section allows a great view when standing and the lower section when seated.

Forward, the pilothouse is shielded from the salon and dining area by a partial-width centerline bulkhead that incorporates stowage on the aft side below the mirrored TV. Three helm seats are located on the forward side. These are fixed in position on hull number one, but future builds will include adjustable mounts for flexibility and improved comfort at the wheel. Sightlines from the helm are great looking forward, and by taking a step or two to either side, the salon windows and glass aft bulkhead allow the helmsman an excellent view all around. If that’s not enough, doors to either side of the helm provide access to side decks that run the length of the Domino.

riva yacht review

From the pilothouse, stairs to port lead down to the galley. A single opening port provides light and air to this compact but well-equipped space. To the starboard side of the pilothouse is another staircase, this one leading to the guest accommodations. Directly off the lower guest foyer is a day-head with shower that also serves as the head for the starboard stateroom, which is fitted with twin berths.

A second stateroom to port also has twin berths, but one can be relocated to create a queen berth when desired. This stateroom also has a larger head, which allows room for a bidet in addition to the toilet, lavatory, and shower. At the bow is a VIP stateroom with an island queen berth. This stateroom also has a fully outfitted head, as well as twin hanging lockers. Overhead, a hatch opens to the foredeck for light, air, and emergency escape.

Aft of the twin cabins and down a few more steps is the full-beam master suite, located amidships for maximum comfort at sea. Large hullside windows, apparent in the Domino’s profile, extend nearly the length of the stateroom port and starboard. They provide an unparalleled view, whether from the queen berth fitted to port or from the leather sofa and armchair in the spacious sitting area to starboard. A 32-inch TV, again hidden in a mirror, faces the berth from the forward bulkhead.

riva yacht review

The Domino is in that magic size range that would allow for owner operation, but should crew be preferred, quarters are located between the owner’s stateroom and the aft engineroom, with private access via a protected stair from the aft deck. The space includes two twin-berth staterooms, one small head with shower, a compact crew mess, and a washer/dryer.

From the crew quarters, a watertight door provides quick and easy access to the engineroom, home to the pair of 2,400-horsepower MTU diesels that power the Domino to a top speed of 38 knots. This is at a partial fuel load, and Riva is one of the few builders who actually provide data in their published specifications for predicting speeds at other loadings. In the case of the Domino, a knot is lost for each additional 2,650 pounds of displacement. Perhaps if other builders were as candid, their owners would be more careful about taking so much unnecessary gear along for the ride.

The Domino is a great interim step between Riva’s range of smaller dayboats and their big motoryachts. It retains much of the Riva runabout spirit while providing a lot more capability than a smaller hardtop cruiser. If you want a bit more in the way of creature comforts but aren’t yet ready to give up the sporting life, the Domino may just be the lady for you.

Yamarin 88DC 2024 Review

The flagship of the yamarin fibreglass boat range, the 88dc is a low profile half cabin cruiser with sports boat handling, ride and performance..

This Scandinavian styled, racy-looking rig is a furiously fast offshore day boat with the features and amenities of a family weekender.

We tested this cool cruiser offshore from the Gold Coast with the Surfers Paradise skyline our backdrop, the morning sun glinting off the high-rise buildings on the glitter-strip.

Finland boat manufacturer, Yamarin, is making inroads into the Australian market, following the introduction of this sport boat brand to local shores earlier this year.

Yamarin also produces the Busta alloy fishing boat range and Cross sports boats and bowriders, the latter made with a plate aluminium hull topped with a fibreglass deck.

All Yamarin boats are made in Finland by parent company, Inha Works Ltd.

A few months ago, we published reviews on the impressive Yamarin Cross 62BR and Yamarin 63DC.

This time around we were able to secure the Yamarin range-topper, the ultra-impressive 88DC (Day Cruiser) paired with Yamaha’s epic 425hp V8 four-stroke outboard.

As you can imagine, the Yamaha XTO 425 packs a mighty punch – accelerating the Yamarin 88DC to a top speed approaching 50 knots. Yes – this is one very fast day cruiser.

Price and equipment

The 88DC is the flagship of the Yamarin fibreglass boat range. Other models include the 60DC, 63DC, 67DC, 79DC, and the 80DC.

Similar to its siblings, the 88DC is very well equipped. There are enough features and amenities in the standard boat to keep everyone happy.

Package pricing starts at $383k when the boat is paired with a white-coloured Yamaha 300hp extra-longshaft four-stroke outboard engine.

Included in the standard boat is a low profile, timber-trimmed cabin complete with a double berth, stand-alone head compartment with toilet and shower, as well as a transverse berth/storage space beneath the helm station deck.

Other key features include a deluxe helm station with Yamarin’s Q+ multi-function onboard computer system (with 2 x 16-inch flush-fitted displays); stereo with speakers; a tilt-adjust steering wheel; as well as a pair of helm bucket chairs and a port side bucket chair fronting the lockable cabin door.

yamarin 88dc 4797

Overhead is the low profile toughened glass, centre-opening windscreen with heavy-duty stainless steel frame and windscreen wipers.

Elsewhere, the 88DC has a moulded aft cockpit seating area with removable cushions; a garage/enclosure compartment for the optional bimini cover; forward anchor locker; 45L fresh water tank; 30L black water tank; interior lighting; opening hull windows; cabin ceiling windows; 12 volt and USB sockets; Yamaha Y-COP immobiliser; boarding platforms and ladder; cup holders; transom fender/rope lockers; cockpit entertaining/storage unit with sink and stove; cockpit table.

The 88DC is rated to accept Yamaha’s largest outboard engine, the XTO 450 Offshore. Our test boat was optioned with the slightly less powerful XTO 425.

Packaged with the big Yamaha V8, our test boat price climbs to $440,480.

This higher price also includes the Yamarin Deluxe option package – which adds the pull-out bimini cover; sunbed in aft cockpit; harbour cover; trim tabs; twin battery system; bow thruster; cockpit refrigerator; and shore power.

With the Touring package also fitted, the 88DC gains an electric anchor winch, shower on bathing platform, and a heater or air conditioner.

Hull and engineering

The Yamarin 88DC has a maximum length of 8.8m and a wide, 2.90m beam.

As such, the 88DC is not trailerable here in Australia – but it is the perfect size to keep at a canal-front home, in a marina pen, or dry-stacked at a marina.

The Yamarin’s distinctive looking fibreglass hull, with its upright, steep-stem bow shape is exceptionally soft riding in chop and offshore.

The hull deadrise is modest at 19 degrees at the transom, but the bow has a very fine wave cutting vee angle forward to cleanly part the waves.

yamarin 88dc 4414

There’s not a whole lot of flare in the topsides, yet the hull rides smooth and dry offshore.

Noticeable from the photos is the anchor at the bow which is suspended from the stem so that it is ready to drop at a moment’s notice.

The test rig was also optioned with a bow thruster for maximum manoeuvrability at docking speeds.

Internally, the 88DC is very well equipped, and I found the fit and finish to be excellent throughout.

Like the smaller Yamarin models, the 88DC conforms to European CE and Australia standards for safety and flotation.

Runabout or cuddy cabin?

The 88DC is the latter of course – but you wouldn’t know it from the outside as the cabin has a very low profile, topped then with a curved glass windshield.

Due to the 8.8m length of the hull, the exterior topsides appear to be quite low – but there is more depth/height here than you might first think; there’s enough in fact to conceal a full size cabin with full standing headroom at cabin entry.

The cabin layout is unusual but effective. One step down from the helm station, there is a port side upholstered lounge bench seat, beneath a handy storage/clothing cupboard.

Immediately to starboard is the stand-alone head compartment with electric toilet, vanity with sink and pull-out shower rose, as well as overhead lighting and hull-side window.

Moving forward, the 88DC has a double bed which angles across from the starboard side up to the forepeak.

yamarin 88dc 4745

The ceiling and cabin surrounds have a smooth white gelcoat finish which is offset by dark, diamond-stitched upholstered vinyl side panels - which stretch the length of the cabin.

Berth cushions are upholstered using a neutral coloured cloth material which blends in nicely with the light-coloured timber veneer trim and the dark upholstered side panels and curtains.

Other features include tinted/smoked ceiling and cabin side windows, ventilation hatch, forepeak mirror, interior lighting, and storage compartments beneath the double bed and port side lounge seat.

In the rear of the cockpit, behind the single cabin step, there is a crawl-space leading through to a surprisingly large transverse double bed.

It is not easy for adults to climb into – and there’s very little headroom - but it would be ideal for a pair of youngsters.

This 2.0m long aft transverse bed/storage area can also be accessed via a gas-strut opening hatch behind the two helm chairs up in the cockpit.

At the helm.

There is enough space behind the broad dash and windshield to fit two bucket helm chairs side-by-side - in addition to a third chair over to port.

The chairs have flip-up front bolsters for maximum comfort when sitting or standing.

The starboard side bucket seat pair is mounted above a moulded storage box - behind which is an aft facing seat and the hatch to gain access to the sub floor berth/storage space.

The port side bucket chair also sits above a moulded fibreglass box which incorporates cutlery storage drawers as well as the galley unit - which comes standard with a sink with freshwater faucet, fold-out bench space and stove.

yamarin 88dc 4812

Our test boat was also optioned with a refrigerator.

Fronting the twin bucket chairs is a wide, angled fascia panel which easily accommodates the two included Yamarin Q+ 16-inch multi-function displays.

Yamarin Q+ is a multi-function onboard computer system which can be setup to display Yamaha engine data.

Other functions include chart plotting (using Navionics charts) and sonar, internet/hot-spot connection, boat user manuals, boat theft protection/position monitoring and more.

In the centre of the dash, moulded steps lead up from the floor to the centre-opening windscreen to provide access onto the foredeck for disembarking over the bow – where there are sturdy hand rails to make that task easier.

Reconfigurable cockpit layout

The rear cockpit is all about comfortable, reconfigurable seating and lounging.

There’s a moulded L-shaped box lounge on the port side, and stretching across the transom, as well as an aft facing seat behind the skipper to starboard.

Naturally, each seat box contains a storage compartment and is topped by comfy, well padded vinyl upholstered cushions and backrests.

A cockpit table slots into the floor to service the port side L-shaped lounge – but can also be reached by those sitting opposite and further forward to starboard.

yamarin 88dc 4783

The L-shaped lounge also converts into a sunbed with additional cushions and infill boards.

Behind the rear bench seat backrest is the garage/compartment from which you can open and easily erect the included bimini cover.

Other noteworthy features in the rear of the Yamarin include the starboard side entry steps, storage/gear lockers to each side of the single-engine outboard well, stern cleats, and twin rear boarding platforms with starboard side telescopic ladder.

On the water

The Yamarin 88DC is a big, fast and capable offshore sports runabout and day boat.

It’s also sleek and good looking – though not in a traditional US Scarab/Cigarette race boat way.

Instead – and to its credit, the Yamarin 88DC is clearly Scandinavian, unmistakably modern.

But that’s enough about its looks. How does the Yamarin 88DC perform? In a word: superb.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time zooming about offshore from the Gold Coast, as the 88DC is very fast, very smooth, nicely balanced.

Did I mention it was fast? Paired with the Yamaha 425hp V8 four-stroke the 88DC accelerates to a top speed of 47 knots. And getting there is a heck of a lot fun.

yamarin 88dc 4290

Mind you the Yamarin’s speed can be deceptive. It gathers in a wave, rather than hitting you with a rush – as the 88DC feels so solid and well-planted that you don’t always realise how fast you are going – until you look down at the GPS.

And that’s what this flagship Yamarin is all about – effortless performance and handling coupled with an interior layout that suits day boating and overnighting equally well.

As an aside, we were unable to conduct our usual full performance trials on this boat/engine combination. However, in the table below we have listed the performance data gathered overseas on the Yamarin 88DC with the slightly more powerful Yamaha XTO offshore 450.

Performance (when paired with a Yamaha XTO 450)

Range on 95% of the 300L fuel supply at 3500rpm: 167.5nm

The Yamarin 88DC is a cool, capable sports day boat and weekender. It’s very fast and fun to drive, soft and seaworthy in the rough stuff, solid and stable at rest.

These performance attributes combine with a surprisingly spacious cabin and an abundance of seating/storage space to make the Yamarin 88DC a fine choice for family boating.
