More details about the course.

The RYA Powerboat level 2 course is aimed both at those new to boating and those that have boated a while that want to improve their boat handling. Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your time with him/her: Boat Handling including in confined spaces Approaching and securing to a buy Anchoring Leaving and coming alongside Handling a boat at planing speed Man overboard Launching & recovery Navigation to include charts, tides, buoyage Undertaking a passage The ‘Collision regulations’

rya powerboat level 2 belgium

The vast majority of the time on this course is spent on the water.

The time that you do spend in on theory will cover: The types of craft and their respective advantages/disadvantages; engines & drives; use of power tilt & trim tabs; safety checks; personal buoyancy; awareness of other water users; application of the collision regulations (IRPCS); local bylaws; towing and being towed; communication with other craft; emergency action; distress signals; fire precautions and firefighting and rope work.

On the second day of the course we spend time looking at charts, tides, buoyage and using a compass. Using these skills we then prepare a short pilotage plan and execute it to put into practice the skills developed it in the classroom.

Essentially day one of the course is aimed at developing your ability to competently handle the craft in close quarter situations whilst day two develops the ability to navigate and then puts this into practice ensuring you have the ability to undertake short inshore passages.

Once you have reached the standard at which we can award the Level 2 certificate. Should you wish, you can go on to apply for your ICC from the RYA. The relevant form can be downloaded which coupled with a photo and a copy of your certificate will get you your licence. If you are a member of the RYA then your ICC is free else it costs approximately £43. Coincidently joining the RYA costs about the same so we would generally advise that you join then get the ICC free.

“It is very important to me that my students do not make mistakes like in this picture below. I explain everything and exercise with them as often as needed so they are capable to drive their boat safely”

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course lasts 2 days and has been developed for people who want to learn how to independently drive a fast motor boat up to 10 meters. • WHAT TO BRING?

RYA Level 2 Powerboat training

The course offers the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to drive safely with a fast motorboat. You do not need a (Dutch) boat license or practical experience to start this course. The vast majority of the students obtain their certificate in 2 days. In exceptional cases it may turn out that someone will still need an extra course day. If this is the case we will inform the student at the end of the first day.

The RYA Power boating course is internationally recognised and is mandatory for renting a fast motorboat abroad. Furthermore, it is also a required diploma for future deckhands, employees on superyachts / tenders and cruise ships, expats and at the request of insurance companies. Experienced boat owners, who want to learn to master the navigation techniques, also reserve this practical boating course at RIB School Scheveningen. And also because it’s just very educational and fun!

For Dutch passport holders, the powerboat certificate is not a valid document in the Netherlands. According to the law, a Dutch national must be in possession of the Dutch boat license (vaarbewijs), which is completely theoretical.

We strive to teach a maximum of 2 – 3 people at the same time in order to give optimal attention. You are alternately skipper and co-skipper. The course is pretty intensive. This allows you to progress quickly and to learn from each other.

Why choose for Rib School Scheveningen?

  • We have more than 15 years of experience training the Police, Department of Waterways and Public Works, expats, deckhands, expedition staff, off shore crew, etc.
  • Out of more than 300 reviews our score is 9.8
  • The Rib training is held on our 8.0m or 8.5m Rib with 300 HP
  • The Zodiac training is held on our Zodiac Miler’s MK 5 HD
  • We are in the near proximity of the North Sea. An exiting and challenging place to navigate.
  • Outside the port we do not have restricted areas with speed limits, so great for training our high speed turns and MOB.
  • The port is great for all manoeuvring exercises with various types of vessels and sailing yachts.
  • Our office is located at only 50 meters from our boats, which is convenient and efficient
  • During the training everyone will be provided with all the necessary gear from Helly Hansen.
  • During the day it is free parking, just in front of the entrance of our office!
  • Scheveningen is a popular destination for water sports, restaurants and beach life, with a big variety of hotel accommodation.

When is our next course?

We do not have fixed training dates, but rather agree on a date in consultation with each other. Please register on the form and let us know in which time period you would like to do the training. We organise a course nearly every week between March and October and it is usually possible to make a reservation at the Rib School Scheveningen in the short term. We have 7 instructors and 4 training boats.

As with any charter, you’re responsible for paying the fuel for the boat. Please contact us if you’d like a quotation for a rental and course pack.
Own boat tuition If you already own a powerboat, or if you have a friend who owns a boat, we’re more than happy to run your Powerboat level 1 course on your own boat. Please contact us if you’d like a quotation for a rental and course pack.

Recognition in Spain

Unlike the United Kingdom, Spain requires that skippers hold a boat licence to operate boats flying a Spanish flag. The same rule applies if you buy a boat or rent a boat. Navigating the waters with an RYA qualification in Spain varies depending on several factors including the boat’s flag state, the pilot’s nationality, residence, and the boating location. Here’s a summary:

UK Citizens or Residents : Post-BREXIT, Spain recognizes RYA qualifications for UK citizens or residents. This makes it easier for them to rent boats or sail their own in Spanish waters. UK-flagged boats require no additional steps, but boats under the Spanish flag need registration for authorization; the process is automatic and simple.

Non-UK Citizens with Non-Spanish Flagged Boats : To navigate in Spanish waters, a valid boating license from the boat’s flag country or the skipper’s country of origin or residence is necessary. RYA qualifications are generally accepted if recognized in the skipper’s home country. Carrying proof of a qualification’s acceptance, such as a letter from an insurance broker, is advisable.

Non-UK Citizens with Spanish Flagged Boats : The General Directorate of Merchant Marine allows EEA citizens and those from specific countries to skipper Spanish-flagged recreational boats with a license from their home country. In practice, most boat clubs and charter companies accept RYA qualifications.

Overall, while RYA qualifications are highly regarded, their acceptability in Spain is nuanced and varies based on specific circumstances, especially concerning the boat’s flag state and the skipper’s nationality or residency.

As a school recognised by the Spanish Maritime Authority, The Boat School can issue a Spanish Boat Licence to students who have successfully completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. This option is not available for every course.

You can find out more about the Spanish Boat Licence here.

International recognition

On successful completion of an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries (Recognition) automatically qualify for an ICC issued by the RYA (see the tab “ICC”).

The ICC is widely recognised as evidence of competence in most European countries.

On successful completion of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries automatically qualify for an ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) issued by the RYA.

The UK ICC is issued by the RYA issued in conformity with Resolution No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party on Inland Water Transport. The certificate is available to a person who fulfils the following eligibility criteria:

1) has reached the age of 16. 2) is physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft. 3) holds the Powerboat Level 2 course completion certificate. 4) meets the nationality requirements.

Who can get an ICC from the RYA?

The following countries have NOT yet adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and you are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL issue you with an ICC.

Albania Andorra Armenia Azerbaijan Bosnia and Herzegovina Canada Cyprus Denmark Estonia France Georgia Greece Iceland Israel Italy Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Liechtenstein Malta Moldova Monaco Montenegro Netherlands* Poland Portugal Russian Federation San Marino Serbia Slovenia Spain Sweden Tajikistan The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Turkey Turkmenistan United States of America Uzbekistan

*The Netherlands has adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE; however, the Dutch Government has given the RYA special permission to issue the ICC.

Who can’t get an ICC from the RYA?

The following countries have adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL NOT issue you with an ICC. If you are a national of one of the countries on this list, you should be able to obtain an ICC from your own Government provided you are able to meet their requirements.

Course content

Achieving confidence in close quarters boat handling in harbours is an important element of this course. In addition, we will teach you driving at planing speed and doing high-speed manoeuvres on open water. You will also practice man overboard recovery, and cover the collision regulations as they apply to powerboats.

This course is available as 2 consecutive days.

Amongst other you will learn

  • Preparation: launch and recovery, safety equipment, lines and fenders and fuel tanks.
  • Boat handling and manoeuvres: starting and stopping, use of kill cord, steering controls, securing to a buoy.
  • Boat handling and manoeuvres: effects of current or tide, high and low speed manoeuvring, propeller controls, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside and man overboard.
  • Theory and background: types of craft and engine, maintenance checks, IRPCS (International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea), weather forecasts and emergency actions.

How to prepare yourself for this course

In order to get the most out of your course, we offer you the possibility to do our online pre-course knowledge quiz. The quiz helps you to test your knowledge and to assess whether you need more preparation in some areas.

Ability after the course

At the end of the course you should achieve a level of seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a small powerboat safely by day in familiar tidal and non-tidal waters under normal conditions.

RYA Course

Course Duration – 1 day

Our one-day First Aid course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries, or on cross-channel passages. This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

Marine VHF SRC

Marine Radio SRC Course and Exam

This RYA Marine radio SRC (Short range certificate) course and exam for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A vhf radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held. Bottom line is that you need an RYA VHF Radio License otherwise known a Short Range Certificate.

RYA Course

ICC  Assessment

Course Duration – 1 Day

The ICC (or to give it its full title International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It was historically known as the International Certificate of Competence.

(Where evidence of competence is necessary, is intended for British recreational boaters operating UK registered Pleasure Vessels and is based both on what we understand the law to say and boaters’ experiences in the country. The RYA generally recommends carrying the ICC as evidence of competence in other European countries).

If you’d like further info or want to find out more, use this form to get in touch with us.

RYA Course

Advice; To prevent disappointment book early . There are limited course dates available. 2021, 2021 and 2023 almost all courses were fully booked. Course dates for 2025 are already available in the Training Calender .

A 2-day course  starting at 09.00 until approximately 17.00 on a 7 meter XS RIB with a 200 horsepower engine. Location; Ambachtsweg 59, 1271 AL Huizen, office nr 5 (with a lovely view over the harbour and the old chalk ovens) at Watersport Centrum Huizen, inland waters (25 minutes by car from Amsterdam)

Language =Englisch

A maximum of 3 students  (and 1 certified instructor), minimum age 18 years (as stipulated by Dutch Law for boats who can run over 20 KM an hour)

The course is aimed  at providing you theoretical knowledge and lots of practical training during daylight in favourable weather safely using a powerboat. The aim is to be in the boat on the water for 70% (or more) of the duration of the course. It is the most popular practical course provided.

The PB 2 certificate is generally seen as a requirement for working on super yachts  (as well is often the RYA Short Range certificate and RYA First Aid certificate).

(this is not a course intended to learn to become a racing driver on a powerboat, then you need to look for another company/course)

On day 1 we are in and in the vicinity of Huizen harbour, learning the skills for safely manoeuvring and handling the boat. If this goes as required on day 2 we will make a trip.

Students are requested to make a small  passage plan for day 2 in the evening of day 1 at home, each for 1 part of the trip mentioned below. All have to make a safety brief (if you already want to read about take a look at this website (full of useful information)  SafeSkipper.

We start in Huizen harbour and go to Almere harbour. From there we will go to the fast speed boating lane, doing some boating in planing speed. From there we will be going to Naarden Harbour and we will be getting fuel and having lunch on board. Then via the island ” Schelp”  (using depth meeter for navigation) back to Huizen harbour. During the trip we will be doing all practical skills learned, like manoeuvring, turning in confined spaces, boating in planing speed, coming alongside,  navigation, MOB (Billy) exercises,  rules of the road, etc. So everyone will gain a lot of useful real experience.  As result of this trip we will be having lunch on board on day 2.

No prior experience  is required, this course suits starters as well as a those who wants to be more prepared to use a powerboat.

At home before the course.  You are requested to read the book you will receive, learn some knots (there are some videos available on youtube accessible via the page  FAQ ), look at video’s regarding flares and lifejackets, this will safe some time which we then can spend on the water!  You can also find a lot of useful and interesting information ons the page   downloads . Please take a look. On facebook you will  also find more photo’s and videos. We do not send any newsletters, if you want to know what is happening and coming please follow us on facebook .

Price 699 euro (includes the 2 days course, certification, petrol for the boat, boat insurance, start power boating book, use of sailing jacket and pants, use of life jacket, drinking water on the boat, sun lotion, certified instructor, free parking, marina fees, lunch (bread), coffee and tea (and of course cookies) , and VAT)

  • f you use a banktransfer as payment from a non dutch bank account payment must be completed  directly.  Any later date for payment completion and your booking will be rejected.  Unfortunately some bad experiences in the past.
  • If your postal address is outside the NL the course book will be handed over during the course (due to high postal charges)

The course dates are guaranteed  independent of the number of enrolments (that is our risk, not yours), only unsafe weather can lead to planning a new date (rain does not influence the course).

Take with you , 1) flat non slipping waterproof shoes (to keep your feet dry and warm), 2) 1 passport photo ! (required for your certificate if you pass the course successfully), 3) cap, 4) sunglasses,  5) waterproof  long fingered gloves (to keep your hands dry and warm) 6) Valid legal identification (pasport)

You are required

1) to be 18 or older (Dutch legal retirement for fast boats)

2) hold a valid health insurance

If the course is passed successfully a UK RYA PB 2 certification for Powerboats < 10 meter is issued (valid for inland and coastal waters). This is often a requirement for boat rental in many countries.

———————————————————————————————-

ICC from the RYA

For driving a fast boat (can go faster then 20 KM an hour) in The Netherlands on inland waters you require an ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You need to be 18 years or older (Dutch law) . There are equipments requirements as well for fast boats (kill cord, lifejackets, fire extinguisher 2 kg) , please check the download equipment on boat document.

In order to request an ICC issued by the RYA (valid for 5 years), for powerboats up to 10 meters) you need to check your nationality first and check if you comply to the all the RYA  requirements. Check the RYA website for latest information. For example,  you have to provide sufficient evidence of your identity and nationality,  look at part 2 and 3 of the ICC application form. It is your legal responsibility to check the latest and complete information on the RYA regarding ICC issuing, Safe Haven Training can not make judgements about legal address, nationality etc, only you can. Safe Haven Training is not the RYA head office, so we can not speak on behalf of the RYA. Invest the time to prevent disappointments, please check via the link the RYA website (it is complete and very informative).

Nationalities like British, Italian, US, Swedish , Greek, French, Italian, Maltese, Taiwanese  for example are possible if you comply to all RYA requirements.

The below mentioned nationalities do NOT comply (list is subject to change)! If your nationality is in the list below the RYA can NOT issue an ICC. If you have a double nationality 1 of them should not be on the list below.

Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Ukraine. This RYA list (correct at 01/10/2020) is subject to change, check via the link the RYA website . (Look at ICC note 2 on the page of the link).

If you comply to the requirements the route for an ICC (valid 5 years) power for boats up to 10 meter of lenght is

  • PB 2 certificate (by completing this course successfully)

For inland waters please also read the CEVNI page .

An RYA issued ICC without CEVNI is not valid for inland waters in The Netherlands!! For  Dutch fast boats (means if the boat CAN go faster than 20 KM an hour) you are required to be 18 years or older.

Also you have to comply certain mandatory equipment on fast boats. You can find more information on the website (in English, or Dutch or German) of Varendoejesamen

We receive a lot of questions from a many nationalities, if you ask a question regarding ICC per email please first read the RYA website , mention in your email: Nationality (or if you have 2 mention both), age, boating in the inland waters  or coastal, can the/your boat go faster then 20 km an hour, what is the length of your boat in meters (exactly).

Tackling RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

Former rya communications officer and editor of inbrief, emma slater, shares her experience of the rya powerboat level 2 course..

Powerboat speeding through the water

I don’t profess to be an amazing sailor, but I have completed a few courses and have some sea miles under my belt. However, when it comes to power boating, I’m a complete novice.

Working for the RYA's communications team, I’m often out in RIBs working with the RYA’s video producer, interviewing boaters, and taking photos. I have watched and admired the skills of our RIB drivers as they whizz around racecourses keeping ahead of the action and manoeuvre effortlessly into what sometimes appear to be the tiniest of gaps and gently apply the throttle for a smooth ride.

After numerous outings holding on at the back, I decided it was time I got my hands on the throttle, so, along with my colleagues James and Chris, I signed up to tackle the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course to get some skills of my own.

Hear how James, Chris and I got on when we visited one of our local training centres, Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC), where our instructor Jon Kirby put us through our paces and honed our skills to claim our PB Level 2 certificates.

Why did you want to take the course?

Chris: It’s a course that I have wanted to do for a while as a sailor with access to RIBs, as it gives you an understanding of using powerboats but more importantly, for me, access to an ICC .

Emma: I wanted to take the course so that when I’m out on the water doing interviews if I needed to take control of the boat, I would know what to do. Also, I think it’s a really useful skill to have.

James: As the RYA’s video producer I’m often out in RIBs so I needed to know how to drive one in case of an emergency.

What were your expectations or concerns for the course?

Emma: I was hoping that we would have lots of time actually doing the skills. I knew there would be classroom elements to the course, but I’m a practical person and learn best by doing. My biggest concern was the possibility of doing something wrong and crashing the boat!

Chris: Truthfully, I wasn’t expecting so much hands-on experience. I was expecting a fair amount of it to be classroom based, so was surprised at the amount of time we had in the boats. I knew the course was about boat handling skills and safety, as I have friends that have done the course. The only concern was how cold the weather was going to be!

James: I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but being a novice on the water I was concerned about the pace of the course and if I’d be able to keep up with the boating terminology.

Chris and James classroom learning

Can you talk us through what you did on the course?

Chris: The course I did at SWAC was a 2-day course. Firstly, we were introduced to the RIB. We were shown around all areas of the RIB explaining what things were and what they did, but most importantly the kill cord and grab bag . After this we talked through and then launched the RIB from a trailer. It was then out on the water where we did some basic manoeuvres so we knew how the boat would handle, figure of 8’s forwards and backwards etc. Then it was into the classroom to talk about weather and first aid . From here it was back out on the boat to do some tight space handling, followed by some slow speed approaches to a mooring buoy. We also discussed COLREGS in the classroom and when we were on the water.

On the second day we were using a bigger RIB with twin engines. To start the day, as a group we did some navigation work, planning where we were going and the length of time it would take. We were then off to the RIB, where we started with some slow speed handling in confined spaces to get used to how this bigger RIB handled. It was then time to fuel up which involved tackling a lock. From here we started our passage plan and did some high-speed turns. The emphasis here was about the whole boat communicating and being part of what we were doing. After lunch we did the return passage where we did a lot of man-over-board practice. We finished our time on the water with some final coming alongside practice and close quarters handling. It was then back to the classroom for a bit of rope work.

Emma: As you can see from Chris’s account it was a pretty full on two days but great fun. Our instructor was excellent at answering any questions or concerns we had and giving us all plenty of time to really get to grips with what we were learning. One thing I did find surprising was when we launched the RIB for the first time how easy it was to push the trailer with the RIB on it and manoeuvre it to the water, easily managing to do it on my own!

James: I was pleased that before we did anything we had a briefing with our instructor so he could establish what level of experience we all had.

Instructor on a rib with students

What part of the course did you enjoy the most?

James: I loved that the course was very practical and even when you’re not driving the boat you are always busy helping the driver and learning from the instructor.

Chris: I think the most enjoyable part was all of the boat handing I did. It was great to have someone there telling you what you needed to do, but also not being so involved that you weren’t feeling that it was all in your control. Probably the best part is when you complete your first small space manoeuvre.

Emma: Much like Chris I really enjoyed the hands-on part of the course, taking control of the throttle and making the decisions about how to manoeuvre the boat, park it, and turn it around.

What elements of the course did you find difficult?

Chris: I did have a bit of difficulty doing some of the slower manoeuvres like approaching the buoy, but the more time I spent doing these, the more and more confident I got.

James: The most difficult aspect of the course for me was the rules of road, but John explained it really clearly to me and kept reinforcing what he was telling me when we were on the water which made things much easier to understand.

Chris and James on the water

Was it easier or harder than you thought?

Emma: Surprisingly I found it easier than I thought it was going to be, even when we moved into the larger RIB which did have me quite worried the first time, I saw it. But having John close by did help build my confidence.

James: It was easier than I thought. Once you have a basic understanding of piloting the RIB it then becomes more about the rules of the road and how the tide and wind will affect your passage.

Chris: I think it was harder than I was expecting, some of the slower speed handling was very difficult to start with.

What did you learn from the course?

James: Tons. It was a real eye opener.

Chris: I learnt a lot, the main thing being that you always wear a kill cord, but also some great techniques and skill of boat handling in confined spaces.

Emma: I learnt loads, especially the skills needed for manoeuvring in small spaces and bringing the boat alongside and the importance of always wearing a kill cord and communicating with others on board.

Level 2 powerboat group

Why do you think this is a good course to do?

James: I think anyone that’s thinking about putting themselves at the controls of a RIB needs to go on this course, for their own safety and the safety of their passengers.

Emma: The course gives you a really good appreciation of how important it is to know what you are doing when out on the water and build knowledge and confidence handling your boat.

Chris: It’s a great way for people to learn about using RIBs and powerboats and gain experience and knowledge that will make them safe on the water. I personally think all boat owners should have a qualification like this.

How will you be using the skills you learnt?

Emma: It means that when we have to go interview, film or photograph people on the water I can drive one of the RYA RIBs and not always have to rely on a third party to take us.

Chris: I have gained an ICC so I will hopefully be using my PB2 qualification when on honeymoon this year, but mainly, it’s to support the team when they have filming/interviewing duties on the water.

James: The general understanding I have gained from attending the course has given me the basic skills to drive the RIB and what to do in an emergency and how to avoid those situations in the first place.

Will you be doing any more PB courses?

Chris: I'm thinking about doing the Advanced or Safety Boat courses next.

What would you say to someone else thinking about taking the course?

Emma: Just do it. You’d be surprised what you can achieve in just two days. The course is full on but loads of fun and you’ll come away with loads of new skills.

Chris: Do it, it’s a lot of fun and a great way to learn something on the water in two days that gives you an internationally accepted qualification.

Tackling RYA Powerboat Level 2 Powerboat Handling

rya powerboat level 2 belgium

RYA Senior Communications Officer and Editor of InBrief, Emma Slater, shares her experience of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course ...

I don’t profess to be an amazing sailor but I have completed a few courses and have some sea miles under my belt. However, when it comes to power boating I’m a complete novice. Working for the RYA's communications team, I’m often out in RIBs working with the RYA’s video producer, interviewing boaters and taking photos - and have watched and admired the skill of our RIB drivers as they whizz around race courses keeping ahead of the action, manoeuvre effortlessly in to what sometimes appear to be the tiniest of gaps and gently apply the throttle for a smooth ride.

After numerous outings holding on at the back I decided it was time I got my hands on the throttle, so, along with my colleagues James and Chris, I signed up to tackle the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and get some skills of my own.

Hear how James, Chris and I got on when we visited one of our local training centres, Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC) in Southampton, where our instructor Jon Kirby put us through our paces and honed our skills to claim our PB Level 2 certificates.

Why did you want to take the course?

Chris: It’s a course that I have wanted to do for a while as a sailor with access to RIBs, as it gives you an understanding of using powerboats but more importantly, for me, access to an  ICC .

Emma: I wanted to take the course so that when I’m out on the water doing interviews if I needed to take control of the boat I would know what to do. Also I think it’s a really useful skill to have.

James: As the RYA’s video producer I’m often out in RIBs so I needed to know how to drive one in case of an emergency.

What expectations did you have for the course? What did you think it would involve? Anything you were concerned about before doing it?

Emma: I was hoping that we would have lots of time actually doing the skills. I knew there would be classroom elements to the course but I am a practical person and learn best by doing. My biggest concern was the possibility of me doing something wrong and crashing the boat!

Chris: Truthfully I wasn’t expecting so much hands-on experience. I was expecting a fair amount of it to be classroom based, so was surprised at the amount of time we had in the boats. I knew the course was about boat handling skills and safety, as I have friends that have done the course. The only concern was how cold the weather was going to be!

rya powerboat level 2 belgium

Chris (left) in the classroom

Can you talk us through what you did on the course?

Chris: The course I did at SWAC was a 2 day course. Firstly we were introduced to the RIB. We were shown around all areas of the RIB explaining what things were and what they did, but most importantly the kill cord and grab bag. After this is we talked through and then launched the RIB from a trailer. It was then out on the water where we did some basic manoeuvres so we knew how the boat would handle, figure of 8’s forwards and backwards etc. Then it was in to the classroom to talk about weather and first aid. From here it was back out on the boat to do some tight space handling, followed by some slow speed approaches to a mooring buoy. We also discussed ColRegs in the class room and when we were on the water.

After lunch we did the return passage, when we did a lot of man-over-board practice.

Probably the best part is when you complete your first small space manoeuvre.

rya powerboat level 2 belgium

Chris at the throttle

Emma: Much like Chris I really enjoyed the hands-on part of the course, actually taking control of the throttle and making the decisions about how to manoeuvre the boat, park it, and turn it around.

Was it easier / harder to do than you may have thought?

Emma: Surprisingly I actually found it easier than I thought it was going to be, even when we moved into the larger RIB which did have me quite worried the first time I saw it. But having John close by did help build my confidence.

James: It was easier than I thought. Once you have a basic understanding of piloting the RIB it then becomes more about the rules of the road and how the tide and wind will affect your passage.

rya powerboat level 2 belgium

James getting some instruction before we get underway

Chris: I think it was actually harder than I was expecting, some of the slower speed handling was very difficult to start with.

What did you learn from the course?

James: Tons. It was a real eye opener.

Chris: I learnt a lot, the main thing being that you always wear a kill cord, but also some great techniques and skill of boat handling in confined spaces.

rya powerboat level 2 belgium

Chris and I listen closely to Jon’s instructions

Emma: I learnt loads, especially the skills needed for manoeuvring in small spaces and bringing the boat alongside and the importance of always wearing a kill cord and communicating with others on board.

How will you be using the skills your learnt?

Emma: It means that when we have to go interview, film or photograph people on the water I can drive one of the RYA RIBs and not always have to rely on a third party to take us.

Chris: I have gained an ICC so I will hopefully using my PB2 qualification when on honeymoon this year, but mainly, it’s to support the team when they have filming/interviewing duties on the water.

James: The general understanding I have gained from attending the course has given me the basic skills to drive the RIB and what to do in an emergency situation and how to avoid those situations in the first place.

Customer reviews

A fantastic weekend of sailing, almost 130 NM in all, with a relaxed, but fully engaging skipper. Great set up and brilliant on the admin. Thanks Stef, Tom et al!

I did a weeks coastal skipper course getting ready for my yacht master and I have to say it was one of the best training weeks I’ve had - our training instructor was superb, exactly the sort of person that you want. He could inspire, provide discipline and impart knowledge as well as let you learn through your own mistakes. Tom and Steph run an excellent operation there and I highly recommend it. They’re flexible and very helpful when it comes to your journey into being a qualified sailor.
