It is also famous for its Wonders of the Ancient World in today’s Turkey.

Start your cruise from a popular seaside town in Turkey, such as Bodrum, Marmaris, Gocek, or Fethiye.

The Turquoise Coast was part of ancient Lycia, whose archaeological remains are numerous. The Aegean coast of Turkey abounds in curiosities and wonders. The Turkish coastline has excellent sailing conditions and weather. The best time to sail in Turkey is from April till the end of November . Weather is perfect and conditions are very favourable for long and relaxing sailing days.

The sun shines for more than 300 days a year in the seas around Turkey, so you will soak up plenty of sun on your rental yacht. Aegean and Mediterranean regions in Turkey have Mediterranean climate. These areas have a sailing season that lasts a bit longer than in other European destinations.

The peak yacht charter season and the hottest months are July and August. These months have very little rain, and the sailing conditions are excellent. The temperatures range between 28 and 35 °C. Preseason and postseason months are also a good sailing choice if you prefer fewer boats, but still warm and beautiful weather.

It is always advisable to read up on the winds specific for the sailing region you are about to visit. The two most recognizable winds you will feel when sailing in Turkey are meltemi and lodos . The Meltemi are hot and dry northerly winds that blow in the Aegean from mid-May to mid-September. The winds can arrive without warning and persist for days, even though they often swell in the afternoon and die down each night. These winds usually provide good and steady sailing for the region. However, be aware that they can be quite severe for short periods. The meltemi are the strongest in July and August. The other winds specific for Turkey's most important sailing region are called lodos , which are also fierce winds that blow from the southwest . Lodos occur in autumn and winter and bring waves. They are at their strongest in the afternoon and often die down at night but can sometimes last for days without a break.

Best Areas To Charter A Yacht In Turkey

There are three main areas to explore on a charter yacht in Turkey - the Lycian Coast, the Carian Coast and the Marmara sea near Istanbul.

Lycian Coast

The Lycian Coast is often considered in two parts – the East Lycian Coast and the West Lycian Coast. Heading east out of the main charter base of Gocek you will find some quite challenging sailing with legs between ports of up to 30 miles. The Seven Capes have an unnecessarily fearsome reputation though one would not recommend you take this route unless you have a decent amount of boating experience. Those who do sail here are rewarded with some spectacular scenery, including a blue lagoon and deserted bays with sandy beaches.

Heading west out of Gocek you will soon find the very sheltered Fethiye Bay which is just right for those with less sailing experience – gentle winds, many opportunities to anchor and one restaurant bays where you can relax for the evening. At Ekincik you can take a bus or shallow draft tourist boat to Dalyan and have a mud bath, feed loggerhead turtles and explore the ancient tombs that make the town so popular with visitors. Marmaris is a bustling metropolitan centre and is used as a jumping off point for those heading for both the Lycian and Carian coasts. Adakoy Marina is where most charter companies have their vessels, and you can use the vessel as a base while you explore the market, nightlife or beaches. Dalaman Airport is still the main way in by air – some 65 miles away from the city.

Marmaris is the first city of note on the Carian Coast, linking with the Lycian Coast. Thanks to the peninsulas and gulfs it is a short hop by road from Orhaniye but a much longer distance by sea. Out of Orhaniye you could take a trip east to Marmaris or west to Bodrum. The main airport is still Dalaman so figure on a longer transfer to and from the marina.

Bodrum is another major yachting base, and is a medium sized city in its own right with a ferry service to nearby Greek island Kos in the summer. From here you can explore the Turkish Riviera (as it is sometimes known) along the Gulf of Gokova – or cross the gulf for the Datca Peninsula.

The Marmara Sea is an inland sea that links the Eastern Mediterranean with the Bosporus and then the Black Sea. The Bosporus itself is an extremely busy waterway but if you want to relax you can soon escape the big ships and fast ferries.

Dalaman Airport is closest to both the Carian and Lycian Coasts. There are flights from several airports in the UK. From there you can be in Marmaris in around an hour by bus or taxi and in Gocek/Fethiye in far less time.

Antalya Airport serves the eastern Carian Coast but will involve a bit of travel to get to the main yacht charter centres of Gocek/Marmaris

Istanbul Airport is one of the main Turkish international airports and if you are flying in from most of the rest of the world will be your best destination. If headed to the Mediterranean Sea you can then fly or take a bus.

The Meltemi winds dominate the weather of the Aegean Sea in Turkey. The further west you go – as far as Bodrum the stronger the NW winds are during the day. The further east you go – around Antalya in the east of the country, the gentler these winds are during the day. These vary from day to day and throughout the day. The most comfortable time to sail in Turkey is during the morning every day during the holiday season. The winds tend to be lighter and steadier in the morning and can build to very exciting conditions come mid-afternoon.

Day 12: Kalkan

This is commonly enjoyed to celebrate special occasions like birthdays and weddings or to commiserate over a broken heart. Surely a fancy yacht charter on the Turkish coast is reason enough to celebrate?

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Just a month away from opening its doors, the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show has announced a brand new exhibition dedicated to showcasing large sailing yachts. 

Scheduled to run from 25-28 September, the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show celebrates its 33rd year with an elite collection of over 120 superyachts and luxury yacht charters in the beautiful Port Hercule. 

Featuring some of the world's most distinguishable shipyards, Monaco is the place to be to view some of the most elaborate and most expensive yacht charters in the world.

With many popular attractions returning for the 2024 edition, including the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, prospective France yacht charter guests will be able to explore an even wider variety of yachts this year with the introduction of the new Sailing Yacht Area.

Situated in the Dockside Area at Quai l'Hirondelle, the new zone is dedicated to displaying some of the most extravagant sailing yacht charters on the market along with some captivating models from international builders.

Welcoming a curated collection of luxury yachts to the inaugural appearance of the Sailing Yacht Zone, yacht rental highlights for the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show include 131.3ft (40m)  yacht charter STATE OF GRACE and the stunning 173.11ft (53m) sailing yacht charter DRUMBEAT .
