About Marina

On behalf of the management and staff of American Yacht Harbor, I would like to welcome you to St. Thomas. Whether this is your first visit to our beautiful island, or you are practically a local, we hope you find the information needed to make your arrival and stay a memorable one.

You will be staying on St. Thomas in the Red Hook area where American Yacht Harbor plays host to an impressive array of sport and pleasure boats, as well as megayachts.

A renowned fisherman’s paradise, the marina offers easy access to the big-game waters of the Virgin Islands. Whether it be dinner-sized or trophy worthy, our staff is always available to help you with your prize catch.

Our surrounding marina village is highlighted with multiple shopping, dining, and entertainment options, however, if there is anything that I or the IGY team can do to make your stay with American Yacht Harbor a more memorable experience, please don’t hesitate to ask! We are here to make sure you have an enjoyable stay, not only here in the marina, but also in St. Thomas.

Arrival information details.

Advanced reservations are strongly recommended at American Yacht Harbor. We cannot guarantee available berthing for guests arriving without a reservation.

11:00 am 2:00 pm

When feasible, we request an estimated time of arrival 24hr in advance so we can be fully prepared for your arrival and minimize any inconvenience. Upon arrival into Red Hook, contact the marina office on VHF Channel 16 or 11 to obtain a slip assignment. A skilled dock attendant will report to the slip to assist with docking, line handling, and connections. Once comfortably settled, we ask that you visit our marina office to check-in. The staff will answer any questions you have.

Upon departure, we request you contact the marina office 1-2 hours prior to departure to ensure all items are in order.  A receipt can be provided at the marina office or emailed upon request to the email address provided at the time of check-in.  If all items are in order, please hail the marina office on VHF Channel 16 or 11 if you would like assistance with disconnection and lines.

Early Check-in / Late Check-out

If a slip is occupied after 11:00 am on the day of your scheduled departure, an additional night’s dockage will be charged to your account.

We will do our absolute best to accommodate your requests whenever possible.  In most cases, if your slip is available prior to 4:30 pm on the day of your arrival, or after 10:30 am on the day of your departure, we will allow you to remain in the slip at no additional charge.  Prior arrangements must be made with the marina office for early arrival or delayed departure in order to avoid unnecessary charges.

Temporary Slips

In the event an early check-in and/or late check-out is unable to be accommodated in your currently slip, we will try to accommodate by making another slip available until such time your slip is available or you are ready to depart the marina.

In the event a temporary slip is made available to you, and you do not relocate the vessel, the marina reserves the right to charge you two times (2x’s) the original daily rate for each night you occupy the temporary slip.

This is necessary as at times, the marina operates at full occupancy and failure to relocate the vessel could negatively affect other guests.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Please note:  Cancellation policies are subject to change. Please refer to your reservation confirmation or contact the marina office direct for confirmation of cancellation policy. Cancellation requests must be submitted directly to the marina. Any cancellation requests received through the IGY Marinas website are not considered proper cancellation.

Yacht Haven Grande and American Yacht Harbor teamed up with My Brother’s Workshop to support a local middle school. Marina teams and volunteers split into groups and assisted in the clean-up of storm debris left over from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Five full loads of debris were disposed of. In addition, teams comprised of employees, local businesses, owners, captains and crew participated in helping The Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School rejuvenate some of its outdoor area for the children. They built new picnic tables, benches and planter boxes.

American Yacht Harbor Marina Rules

To make your stay with us more enjoyable, the following set of guidelines should be followed. These are merely suggested rules of etiquette and regulations to make the Marina and its facilities more enjoyable for all customers.

  • Do not leave garbage on the docks to be picked up.  Garbage should be bagged, tied and then properly placed in designated receptacles, or placed in the garbage truck, not loosely scattered or abandoned.
  • Oils and fuels should be disposed of properly and not in the Marina trash can.  Please ask for assistance when disposing of oils, fuels, or chemicals.  Your concern for the environment helps.
  • Try not to introduce any effluents into the Marina Lagoon.  Use holding tanks if possible.
  • Do not attempt to turn on your own water and electricity.  Please have a dock attendant take care of this so you can be properly metered in and out.  Using pliers or screwdrivers will damage the equipment, for which you will be charged.  It is suggested that you read meters along with our dock attendant to ensure accuracy in your metered charges for utilities.
  • Anyone caught taking water from another yacht’s tap shall be responsible for the entire water cost of the metered yacht.  Please use your own water.
  • Keep power cords and water hoses in a neat and orderly fashion so that no one will trip in the dark or while carrying objects.
  • Please wash sails on lawn areas where water outlets and drying spaces are available, or do so aboard your yacht.
  • When marking anchor chains with paint, use paper or cardboard beneath your chain to keep wet paint off the docks and other customers’ shoes.
  • When cleaning dinghies, make sure you rinse debris and growth off of the docks when finished.
  • Lock your boat when leaving it unattended.
  • Lock your dinghies and outboard at night, especially when left unattended.
  • Try to keep excessive noise down after 10pm as a courtesy to other guests.
  • Boat repairs being performed at the docks should not include grinding and/or power sanding.
  • Barbecue and cooking in general is prohibited on the docks.  Barbecue and cooking should be done on board in suitable equipment and be self-contained.  Any other way is dangerous and frowned upon.  Kindly clean up after yourself when finished.  Charcoal ash and debris are not to be disposed of into the lagoon.
  • When docking, keep bowsprits and davits over water’s edge and not protruding across the docks.
  • If bright deck lights or spotlights are to be used at night, avoid pointing them at nearby boats, especially down at or into their cabins.
  • Please be sure to keep all pets on a leash for the safety of your pet and surrounding patrons.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

"Everyone was more than kind!! If I could give first place trophies to them all I would!! Especially all the girls in the office!!"

"All the dock employees are kind and helpful."

How far is it from the port to American Yacht harbor?

We will be on the Allure in September. We will be going on an excursion that leaves from the American Yacht Harbor, Red hook. Does anyone know how long of a taxi drive it is and the approximate taxi fare cost for 4 people?

The taxi from Crown Bay is approx. 30 min (maybe 40 min with heavier traffic) and around $20 - 22pp roundtrip, it's not a published rate but that's close.

Have a great day!

Forgot to mention there are some fun bars right there overlooking the harbor if you have time after the excursion - Island Time is upstairs overlooking the marina, and Big Banboo is a few steps toward the ferry terminal.

Being from New York, we have some pretty awesome sushi restaurants. But this one?? Outstanding. The food is delicious- perfect combinations with sushi and perfect size- the pieces are nice to bite into because they don't fall apart. We recommend the spicy tuna on crispy rice, the goin back to cali roll, the rolling rainbow roll, and the off da hook roll (all pictured). The service was quick and very accommodating- and they also recommended items that they enjoyed. The ambiance is nice- we went for our dim light date night on vacation together. Tip- The restaurant is a bit small so try to make reservations beforehand!

We had dinner at Raw during a recent trip to St. Thomas. Our first impressions were good: nice staff, menu looked good, and they had a happy hour menu. However, we also saw that there were only 6 fish available, one of which was boiled shrimp (which we never eat). A pretty unimpressive line-up for a sushi bar. We started with the miso soup, RAWkin' tacos, and a red snapper maki roll. The soup was good, the tacos better (we added a 4th taco so we each had two). The tuna in the tacos was good, but the overall taco was just OK. The over abundant sauce drowned out the fish. That was the beginning of a trend for the evening. The red snapper maki roll was small (happy hour size) so no real bargain there. It was also our first taste of the rice used at the restaurant, not so good. That issue continued throughout the evening. We also started with a carafe of hot sake, which was tasty. We had several carafes throughout the evening! :-) We moved to the regular menu and ordered the hamachi carpaccio. The dish included the fresh hamachi, asian slaw, arugula, and sliced jalapeno. No sauce on this plate, so the fish was the star. Fresh and served at the right temperature. We ordered sashimi next: salmon, (more) hamachi, red snapper, and tuna. The fish was good, all tasted fresh. We moved on to specialty rolls next, and tried the Four Tuna and Don't Vessup rolls. Both rolls suffered from the rice deficiency noted above. The seemed old, a bit dried out, and simply not the quality one would expect at a top-notch sushi place. Both rolls also suffered from the over-abundance of spicy aioli sauce. Not sure why sushi places do that... the good ones don't. Service was OK, not great. The sushi chefs were responsive, but our waitress (who we think was new) was pretty slow. For the prices charged, we expected much better-quality food. Raw missed the mark on quality and available fish. With so many dining options in the area, we won't be back.

My partner and I went to raw and had a perfectly good experience. We made a reservation, which was very much needed. Also, if you've haven't been in the area parking can be challenging. Give it a couple of drive thrus and you'll find something. I got the teriyaki chicken which I thought was gonna be a bit more substantial. It was hella yummy although you only get one strip. I honestly could've eaten five of these. I also got a bowl of white steamed rice. The rice was weirdly cold and dry. My friend got the surf and turf roll which had steak and crab. He said it was good but the rice also was on the dry side. The restaurant itself was very clean and everyone was nice. We'd come back and try other things with a better informed opinion.

Sushi was fair. It was prepared colorfully. However, it seemed rather dry, and the sauces were not very bold and flavorful. The drinks were very basic. They tasted as if it was just rum and a storebought mixer. For the price, they should have had actual recipes. We weren't offered a table. The waitress sat us right in front t of the sushi bar. The entire restaurant was open for seating, but she acted like we needed a reservation. Might go back during the busy season and try again..??

They are closed on Sundays and Mondays but this is not listed. We went there on Monday and they were closed

I wanted something fast and relatively cheap for the area so one of the shopkeepers told me about it. I got the poke bowl which was just okay. I was really nothing spectacular about it I wasn't amazed but it was tasty then the less. I think if you were looking for affordable and decent option this would be worthwhile. I didn't look for parking because I took a taxis everywhere when I was around but I do see a lot of people walking in so there should be street parking available if it's needed service was a little off the waitress forgot to give me a few items but I let that slide. If you're in the area you might want to check it out

Excellent sushi and service. The normal maki rolls were actually pretty large portions which was nice for the price! Get the edemame to start it was so good!!

4.5 stars- Came here for dinner and had a great meal! We ordered the edamame, spicy tuna crispy rice for apps and the poke bowl, rawkin roll, four tuna roll, red snapper sashimi and spicy tuna maki roll. Food was quick and all delicious. Lost a 1/2 star because we seemed a little forgotten once the place got busy. Nevertheless, would still recommend this spot for a sushi fix!

Snagged a spot on a Monday night at the sushi bar, though I would recommend reservations if possible as it can get pretty busy. Interior is very new and cozy. We ordered a couple of drinks, poke bowls and the miso shellfish roll. Drinks were great, my favorite was the matsuyama mule as it was very refreshing in this warmer weather. I was a bit disappointed in the miso shellfish roll, it boasted lobster-crab-shrimp salad, but only tasted of imitiaton crab meat. On the other hand, the poke bowls were top notch. Fish was very fresh and the toppings added wonderful contrast to the bowl. Not bad for being right in the heart of red hook, its worth a shot if you're here.

"moscow harbor".

Hitler and his staff kept driving German troops onward to Moscow to impel Imperial Japan to enter the war.

american yacht harbor photos

Top Image: German troops in Russia courtesy of the National Archives.

The eminent WWII historian (and close friend of The National WWII Museum) Dr. Gerhard Weinberg often begins his lectures with a reminder to the audience that "the earth is round." This bit of commonplace wisdom serves to remind us that the events on any one front of the war necessarily had a major impact on all the others, and that it is impossible to discuss the various fronts in isolation.

If you ever need reminding of the "roundness" of the globe, all you need to do is to look back to the first week of December 1941. Two great events took place in that fateful month: the massive Soviet counterattack in front of Moscow on December 5 and the Japanese strike at Pearl Harbor on December 7.

Just a coincidence, you say? After all, it is a long way from Moscow to Pearl Harbor, some 7,000 miles, and that is about as far away as you can get on planet Earth. How could one of these events possibly have fed into the other?

It’s simple. Just remember Weinberg’s Law. The earth is round. The German defeat in front of the Soviet capital was the result of many factors, but above all of a serious German logistical overstretch, with replacements lagging behind losses, spare parts and fuel hard to come by, and reinforcements altogether absent. The drive on Moscow petered out in late October, with the arrival of the autumn rains, restarted briefly when the mud froze, then got stuck together with the hard freeze and snow of mid-November. The Soviets even liked to brag about two of their most stalwart and heroic commanders: General Mud and General Winter. By any reasonable standard, the time had come for the Wehrmacht  to take stock, consolidate a good defensive position, and then use the new line as a jumping off point for an offensive in 1942.

Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs: Picture Collection, New York Public Library. The New York Public Library Digital Collections, 1942.

But that did not happen—quite the opposite, in fact. The Germans kept pressing forward, suffering soaring casualties for decreased gain, and today we know one of the reasons why: Hitler and his staff kept driving the troops onward in order to impel the Japanese to enter the war.

The Führer knew the Japanese were considering a strike on the United States. Back in March, he had promised Japanese Foreign Minister Matsuoka Yosuke to support the Rising Sun in any war it launched on America. The Japanese, disappointingly, had refused to jump, deciding to spend the year in seemingly endless negotiations with Washington. They refused to jump in July, when the Wehrmacht  was carving up the Red Army like a roast, and they were hardly going to do so if the Germans suddenly looked like losers in front of Moscow. Hitler desperately wanted Japan in the war. He was impressed with its military tradition, its never-say-die soldiers, and, of course, its big blue water navy, the wartime Reich's most serious strategic deficiency. A Japanese attack would keep the United States distracted and reduce the amount of American materiel flowing to the Allies: all good things for Berlin.

And so, the Wehrmacht  kept going long past the point of diminishing returns, inching forward until advanced German formations were ridiculously close to Moscow, just 10-12 miles. In getting there, however, the Germans had fought themselves down to the last man and tank. German divisions were the size of battalions, and companies the size of squads. Frostbite injuries were rampant and winter clothing scarce—not because the Germans didn’t know it was going to be cold in Russia in December, but as a result of a deliberate decision to prioritize ammunition and fuel for the final forward drive. This ghost army was easy prey for the vast Soviet counteroffensive that opened on December 5, with no fewer than 17 fresh armies assembled just for this purpose.

Of course, the Japanese finally did take that long-awaited plunge, two days later, on December 7. They did so on their own schedule, for reasons of their own that had little to do with Hitler's operational decisions. But in hesitating as long as they did, they were one of the reasons that the Germans kept grinding forward, and the lateness of their strike on Pearl Harbor was one key driver in the German disaster before Moscow.

Like the wise man says, the earth is round.
