Massive superyacht with helicopter pad docks in Victoria
A 62-metre superyacht has made B.C.'s capital its latest port of call.
The three-year-old Anawa yacht, built by Netherlands-based Damen Yachting, arrived at the Van Isle Marina in Sidney on Sunday, before travelling down to Ship Point in Victoria on Monday.
The superyacht, estimated to be worth $100 million by website superyacht.com , could still be seen docked in Victoria's Inner Harbour on Tuesday.
"Key features of the Polar Class yacht include a fully certified helideck and hangar, two tender garages, a dive store and plentiful storage facilities to ensure 30 days autonomy on the water," said superyacht magazine Boat International in August 2020, when the vessel was first unveiled.
According to Boat International , the Anawa is just one of 190 motor yachts in the world that measures between 60 to 70 metres, and is in the top five per cent of vessels in terms of length overall.
Website superyachtfan.com reports that the Anawa is owned by Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann, who has an estimated net worth of 15.2 billion USD, according to Forbes Magazine's list of the world's richest billionaires in 2023 .
The 83-year-old started his career in investment banking before becoming a controlling shareholder of Anheuser-Busch InBev, a brewing company that makes more than 500 brands, including Budweiser, Stella Artois and Modelo.
Lemann also has stakes in Restaurant Brands International, which is the parent company of Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs, according to Forbes.
The Anawa has an annual operating cost of about $10 million, according to superyachtfans.com.
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) says it has hosted superyachts before, but this one is particularly large.
"It is most likely the largest ship we've had moored at Ship Point," said Stella Garcia, manager of communications for the GVHA.
Anyone interested in looking at the vessel should make their way down to the harbour soon.
"We can't tell you how long it's going to be here for, but we do hope to see it again," said Garcia.
"It's a rare thing and I think that's what makes living in a port city so exciting."

A 95-metre superyacht priced at $200 million was spotted cruising through False Creek before docking in North Vancouver.
Attessa V Yacht was built in 2010 by Blohm and Voss, a German shipbuilding and engineering company. It arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday and moved over to a dock in North Vancouver on Wednesday morning.
AV can entertain 24 guests in 12 rooms and has a crew of 33 people. It features a large swimming pool on the deck, a private movie theatre and a jet pool jacuzzi.
The superyacht was designed by Michael Leach Design and soars in ’speed and style.’
It costs $10 to $20 million per year to run the yacht.
Website SuperYacht.com lists the owner of the AV as Dennis Washington, an 88-year-old American billionaire whose net worth is listed at US$6.4 billion and is ranked number 397 in Forbes' richest people in the world .
Washington, from Montana, claims to be ‘self-made’ and owns a copper mining, marine transportation and heavy equipment business, according to Forbes. He is married with two children. In an interview with Forbes.com, Washington said his passion is boats.
Washington’s network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.
The AV Yacht was previously known as Palladium and is listed as an award-winning superyacht. It was previously owned by Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian oligarch and previous owner of the Brooklyn Nets. The yacht drew attention when The Late Show host Stephen Colbert visited Prokhorov on the yacht.
Superyachts flocking to Vancouver Island
Superyachts flock to B.C. every year. One recently drew attention in B.C.’s capital when a Brazilian billionaire docked in Victoria.
The 62-metre-long vessel called the Anawa was docked at Ship Point on May 30, clad with its own helicopter on deck.
Billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann owns the yacht, according to Superfanyacht.com. Forbes.com says the investor-philanthropist lives in Switzerland and is worth $14.8 billion.
Anawa was custom-designed and built in 2020 by Damen Yachting. It’s one of the company’s SeaXplorer class of vessels, billed as “long-range, luxury expedition” yachts.
It can carry 12 guests and 15 crew plus a captain, Damen said.
Back in 2020, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones's yacht was spotted in the waters off Vancouver Island . The "Bravo Eugenia" is worth an estimated quarter-billion dollars.
The superyacht is designed to use 30 per cent less fuel than other vessels of its size and class but it doesn't skimp on amenities. The "Bravo Eugenia" can accommodate 14 guests and 30 crew members and features six guest suites, a beach lounge, spa and gym.
On Tuesday, the AV Yacht wasn’t the only yacht drawing attention. A 32-metre vessel called the Snowbored was passing through False Creek with the final destination of Galiano Island.
The Snowbored, built by Westport in 2003, is a 32-metre vessel with a satin cherry wood interior, and a sundeck sporting a hot tub, wet bar, and lounge pads. It also has a fighting chair and rocket launcher for sport fishing, and can launch a Novurania tender and Yamaha waverunners.
In a statement to Glacier Media, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says anyone wishing to view the Attessa V in Vancouver's inner harbour area by boat "is urged to ensure they do so from a safe distance." "We love seeing boaters and paddlers out enjoying the waters that make up the Port of Vancouver," says Jason Krott, manager of marine operations and fleet. "Our focus is working with all users to build the awareness and understanding needed to support a safe shared space for recreational and commercial traffic."

Billionaire’s Super Yacht Spotted In Los Cabos

The $100 million mega yacht belonging to a Brazilian billionaire has been spotted in the waters off the coast of Los Cabos. He was also spotted enjoying himself on the beach and walking around the waterfront.
Tourism companies in the area said they were impressed to see the yacht, which is named ‘Anawa’, anchored in the bay of Cabo San Lucas. The boat is owned by a Brazilian businessman and investor called Jorge Paulo Lemann.
The billionaire was originally born in Switzerland, and is now regularly recognised as one of the richest men in the world by Forbes magazine. His fortune is valued at roughly $17 billion, making him the 27 th richest man in the world.
The multi-million-dollar yacht is over 63 feet in length and cost more than $85 million euros ($100 million). The yacht is also registered as the official permanent base of Mr. Lemann’s helicopter, a Helibras 350, which has also been seen flying over the bay in Cabo San Lucas.
The mega yacht has four decks, with capacity for 12 passengers alongside twenty crew members. It also has two Caterpillar C32 engines which gives it a maximum speed of 13.5 knots. Aside from the Anawa, he also owns another super yacht called the Karima.
Jorge Paulo Lemann is the founder of investment company 3G Capital which is where most of his wealth stems from. The company is well-known for partnering with Berkshire Hathaway to make acquisitions such as Burger King, Heinz and Kraft Kraft Foods.
He is also a majority shareholder and former board member of Board of Directors of the company Anheuser-Busch InBev brewery (Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois). He was also a founding shareholder and chief executive of Brazilian company, Banco de Investimentos Garantia, which he sold in 1998 to Credit Suisse Boston.
Lemann is far from the first celebrity to visit Los Cabos in recent months, with the area attracting a whole host of celebrities from music stars to actors. Most recently, Cardi B was spotted with her husband Offset flying into Los Cabos in their private jet. While there they relaxed on the beach and visited some of the areas nightclubs.
Also spotted were household names, Justin Bieber and Michael Jordan. Bieber visited with his wife Hailey for a relaxing getaway, while Michael Jordan returned once again to pursue his passion for golfing.
The influx of celebrities is setting Los Cabos apart as one of the world’s luxury destinations, encouraging more and more tourists to visit the area in the hopes of spotting their favourite stars and enjoying all the region has to offer. In the first quarter of 2022, Los Cabos received over 800,000 tourists who are increasingly attracted to the beautiful beaches, resorts, restaurants and wildlife in Los Cabos.
Los Cabos is already working on new ways to attract even more visitors, firstly focusing on sustainability and habitat protection in the area, most recently finalising plans to ban smoking on beaches and in hotels.
Los Cabos has also been voted the most LGBT friendly destination in Mexico, and with the area’s upcoming Pride Parade on June 19 th , it is certain that many more tourists will be visiting the area to celebrate. On top of this, Los Cabos is expected to receive more than 700 cruise ships before the end of 2023 , including two music cruises this year, Kiss Kruise and Groove Cruise, which will both sail from LA, encouraging more US visitors to the destination.
Los Cabos suffered low tourism numbers during the pandemic but has implemented a post Covid-19 recovery plan which has helped it not only bounce back but greatly exceed pre-pandemic tourism numbers.

A Brazilian investment banker valued at around $25 billion has stopped off in Guernsey in the $100 million super yacht he bought earlier this year.
Anawa, a 62-metre custom-designed SeaXplorer, is currently docked at St Peter Port Harbour and is understood to be taking on fuel.
It is owned by Jorge Paulo Lemann, 81, who was born in Brazil but now resides in Switzerland.
Pictured: Dutch boat builders Damen Yachting launched the new SeaXplorer range earlier this year.
Mr Lemann made his wealth in investment banking and is the co-founder of 3G Capital, which has acquired brands such as Burger King, Kraft Foods, Anheuser-Busch and Heinz in the last decade.
The billionaire businessman has a penchant for luxury yachts and Anawa is believed to be his latest acquisition.
It was built by Damen Yachting and has 16 crew, a gross tonnage of 1,850 and a maximum speed of 13.5 knots.
Anawa arrived here at around 06:00 this morning from Vlissingen in the Netherlands.

Hostesses onboard sunken yacht left in shock as five bodies recovered from Bayesian, with one person still missing
Survivors from the sunken superyacht Bayesian have commented on their horror ordeal while still recovering from the shock incident that left six people onboard missing.
Two hostesses onboard the Bayesian have commented on their horrifying ordeal after surviving the sinking of the yacht that left six people missing.
One person was confirmed dead and 15 were rescued, while six went missing when the superyacht sunk in rough weather off the Sicilian coast on Monday, local time.
Five bodies have since been recovered by Italian authorities from the shipwreck after a marathon search and rescue effort involving helicopters, coast guard vessels and divers.
A sixth person remains missing, while the remains of the five bodies recovered have not yet been identified, with reports authorities are waiting for the last body to be located before they are all formally confirmed.
Two hostesses who were working on the yacht -South African-born Leah Randall, 20, and 22-year-old Kaja Chichen from Germany are still in shock after the tragedy.
Since the vessel sunk, the pair, along with the other 13 survivors, have been staying at the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, which has also been used as the headquarters of police and rescuers.
They spoke to local news outlet Giornale Di Sicilia briefly while passing through the hall of the hotel.
"We are alive by a miracle," they said, as tears emerged according to the publication.
One of the girls added: "It was terrible."
Heidi, the mother of Ms Randall told Sky News UK she was "beyond relieved" her daughter's life was "spared by the grace of God."
"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives/missing," she said.
"My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship."
The six people missing from the yacht were identified as its owner, British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo, chair of Morgan Stanley International Bank Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy Bloomer.
Efforts to reach the wreck have been complicated by its location, with the hull of the vessel some 50 metres underwater and lying on its side.
Divers are only able to spend around 14 minutes scouting the site before returning to the surface, with a mass of debris also hindering efforts to enter the hull and search for remains.
An investigation into the tragedy is also underway, with a team of four inspectors from the United Kingdom's Marine Accident Investigation Branch arriving in Sicily on Thursday to assist.
Serious questions are being asked about why the Bayesian sank so rapidly while a nearby fishing vessel managed to escape with relatively minor damage, as well as suggestions about how stable the vessel was when the storm first struck.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch, finance executive Jonathan Bloomer among victims found dead on sunken yacht
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer were among the victims found dead on a luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.
Lynch’s death was confirmed by people with direct knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified. Bloomer and his wife Judy were among the dead, their children said in a statement Thursday.
They were among the five who have been recovered from inside the sunken ship. One person remains missing after the Bayesian was hit by a tornado near Porticello, Sicily, on Monday. Adding to the complexity of the search mission is the “narrowness of the spaces” inside the sunken yacht and “the presence of many objects,” the coast guard said.
Overall, of the 22 passengers in the boat, 15 were rescued Monday. The body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s chef, was found soon after the Bayesian sank.
Lynch’s daughter Hannah, Clifford Chance partner Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda have not been officially accounted for.
Italian authorities are investigating exactly how the Bayesian sank – and why it sank so quickly – in a storm that struck in the early hours of Monday morning. The captain and other survivors have been questioned by the local prosecutor’s office, according to Italian media.
The U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it’s also probing the incident, with questions centered on the expansiveness of the yacht’s mast and the state of the hull.
“Right now, there is no evidence that the mast has been snapped,” coast guard spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola told Bloomberg News. “We can also say that, so far, there is no evidence that the hull has been broken. But we don’t have a clear idea yet of the full damage.”
The head of the company that built the Bayesian said the luxury yacht should have been “unsinkable” given sailboats are built in a way that allows for significant listing without capsizing.
“That ship is unsinkable because it is a sailboat,” Italian Sea Group Chief Executive Officer Giovanni Costantino said in an interview with Bloomberg News. His company bought Perini Navi, the Italian shipbuilder that made the Bayesian, in 2022.
Crews aided by military ships, remote-controlled underwater vehicles and helicopters have been searching for missing passengers since Monday. Six guests, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, and nine crew have been rescued.
Lynch, 59, and his family were celebrating his recent acquittal from fraud charges with a small group of advisers when the violent storm struck. The charges stemmed from Lynch’s sale of his software firm Autonomy Corp. to Hewlett Packard Co. in 2011. The Silicon Valley giant went on to accuse Lynch of accounting failures. He’d spent years working to clear his name in court and restore his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful entrepreneurs .
A little more than two months before the yacht accident, a San Francisco jury found Lynch not guilty of criminal charges that he duped HP into overpaying for his company. He was still fighting HP in a civil case in London, where a British judge held him responsible for creating the illusion of a company much larger and more successful than it was.
Rescue workers have had difficulties gaining access to the yacht some 50 meters, about 160 feet, below the surface, citing the depth and position of the vessel’s hull.
“The search will go on as long as necessary,” Zagarola said. “For sure, the whole hull will need to be inspected meter by meter.”

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.
The body of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was among those recovered by Italian divers, an official in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, said on Thursday, confirming that he was killed when a violent storm struck his yacht this week.
Of the 22 people on board the yacht, which had anchored off the Sicilian coast early Monday, when it sank, nine crew members and six passengers survived.
As of Thursday afternoon, Italian recovery teams had retrieved the bodies of the one remaining crew member and five passengers who had been on the yacht, which now lies in 165 feet of water near the port of Porticello, and were searching for one more passenger.
The death of Mr. Lynch was confirmed by Massimo Mariani, the prefect of Palermo, who said that the remaining missing person was the technology entrepreneur’s daughter Hannah.
The others victims were Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.
“This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder,” the Bloomer family said in a statement. “Our parents were incredible people.”
The Morvillo family said it was “completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda,” and added, “Their passing is a tremendous loss.”
The yacht was caught in a sudden downpour. Weather experts said that strong winds and lightning had hit the area and that the yacht had most likely been struck by air generated within a thunderstorm descending rapidly or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.
12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.
Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Rescue teams involving deep sea divers with the Italian firefighters’ corps, coordinated by the coast guard, as well as helicopters and rescue ships, had worked to reach the hull of the ship, which had settled on its side on the sea floor.
Carlo Dall’Oppio, the national head of Italy’s firefighters, said on Thursday that the boat was tilted by 90 degrees on the sea bottom. He said the bodies had been found “in the cabins,” although it remained unclear if they were all found in the same one.
The rescue teams recovered four bodies on Wednesday and one on Thursday, bringing them ashore in body bags in front of a crowd of reporters and onlookers.
The priority remained “the recovery of the missing body,” said Mr. Mariani. Once that search is completed, the judicial authorities would decide the next steps, he said.
The bodies recovered so far were already at the disposal of prosecutors, he said, “and then there is the investigative phase,” which would include the recovery of the yacht.
The Italian prosecutors handling the case have attracted strong criticism from the local press association because of their reluctance to share any information with reporters.
As of Thursday, they had not held a news conference or released a statement on the investigation, generating what the Sicilian press association called “a black market of news” that made it hard to verify information.
Finally, on Thursday afternoon, Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor handling the case, said that a news conference would be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the town of Termini Imerese, the location of his office.
Mr. Mariani said the operations to recover the bodies had gone quickly, taking into account that the divers had a limited amount of time — about 12 minutes — to operate before coming up.
“It was complicated and also potentially dangerous for the divers,” he said, because of the size of the yacht. “There are objective difficulties; thankfully, they are well trained and know what they are doing.”

Search and rescue for missing persons is always challenging for the specialist recovery teams involved, regardless of the environment they’re working in.
But the teams looking for the missing aboard the Bayesian yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily leaving several people dead, have faced particularly challenging conditions. Even though the boat lies in relatively shallow water of 50 metres, underwater operations are affected by numerous factors which make them the most complex of search and rescue efforts.
Best practice shows that searches should be coordinated, with areas that are being searched expanding outwards from the last known location. This makes the most efficent use of available teams and equipment, which are selected depending on targets and environments being searched, while updating and refining the operation as new information becomes available.
Land-based searches may be more straightforward as the recovery team can usually walk or move about more easily. Searching in water is more challenging, whether in rivers, lakes or the open ocean.
Inland waterway searches , such as rivers, canals and lakes are more constrained in their extent than the sea and open ocean due to surface area and depth.
Searchers use a variety of techniques, such as trained victim recovery search dogs, sonar to reflect sound waves from target objects, water penetrating radar that can detect objects below sediment, and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs). The combination of techniques used are dependent on the environment and the scenario.
Marine searches, by contrast, can be more difficult as they usually cover significantly larger areas both spatially and in terms of water depth. Additional issues to consider include salinity, temperature and strong currents, and the fact that there may be a rugged seabed which could hamper divers, sonar and ROVs.
Drowning was the third leading cause of “unintentional injury” death worldwide, claiming around 360,000 victims in 2021, and revealing a globally increasing trend in cause of death.
And for every drowned person recovered, there are many others who remain missing. Recent Danish research showed that only 45% of missing individuals in water are successfully found and recovered within 12 months of their disappearance.
Marine searches cover a wide range of disasters, from tsunami victims, such as the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 , to fishermen on sinking trawlers and migrants on unseaworthy boats . Then there are issues related to mechanical difficulties, such as the Argentinian San Juan submarine in 2017 , and plane crashes such as the still-missing Maylasian Airlines MH370 plane in 2013 .
Finally, there are searches for missing divers or underwater craft like the Titan submersible which imploded during a dive to the Atlantic wreck site of the Titanic in 2023.
Diver caution
The search for the missing in the sunken Bayesian yacht – the cause of which is currently uncertain – should have been relatively straightforward. Helicopters, likely equipped with thermal imaging equipment, and rescue boats were rapidly deployed to look for survivors, although the body of chef Recaldo Thomas was found floating on the surface.
Five victims have been recovered from inside the yacht that was discovered close to the shore in comparatively shallow water (50m) and where there was good local knowledge of ocean currents. If they had been washed out to sea, ocean currents, the decomposition process, scavenging activity and other factors could all have made this forensic search even more problematic.
However, it is challenging for divers to work at depths of 40 metres or more. One reason is the risk of nitrogen narcosis . The deeper divers go, the higher the pressure gets.
At higher pressure, the gases divers breathe in from their tanks cause symptoms such as drowsiness and impaired judgement, which is an obvious danger underwater. Decompression sickness – when divers ascend too rapidly, and often known as “the bends”, is another issue. This means divers can only spend ten minutes on the wreck itself.
In the case of the Bayesian, underwater ROVs were deployed, likely with live audio, lighting rigs and sonar equipment to assist with navigation and location, and minimise the risk to divers in this difficult environment. The 56m yacht was rotated onto its side, had 1.3 cm thick glass windows that were hard to break, and was full of debris that made it difficult to retrieve the missing people.
The chances of finding the missing alive declined rapidly the longer the underwater search went on. However, in rare cases, people have been found clinging onto debris or flotation devices, or within air pockets in sunken vessels after several days.
Harrison Okene, a fisherman on a trawler that sank 19 miles off the Nigerian coast in 30 metres of water in 2013, was found by divers still alive after 60 hours being trapped in an air pocket in the upturned boat. He later published a book on his rare survival story. There are also several famous maritime stories of people rescued from rafts after being adrift at sea for weeks and even months.
While tragically the initial search and rescue operation turned into a recovery mission, the rapid deployment of search teams, including specialist divers, helicopters, rescue boats and ROVs resulted in a rapid “successful” operation.
This is of paramount importance when it comes to identifying the victims and determining the cause of death. Sadly this is not always the case in such rescue operations, such as undocumented migrants lost at sea .
The lack of funding to recover sunken vessels in relatively shallow waters, which would allow the cause of their sinking to be diagnosed, would help prevent future vessel sinkings and the tragic loss of life that all too often goes with it.
