Post-mortem rules that British teenager Bethany Smith died by misadventure
- Stef Bottinelli
A post-mortem examination has established that Welsh teenager Bethany Smith died instantly after falling off the mast of schooner Germania Nova in Jamaica. The death certificate will record death by misadventure
22 March 2017
YBW has spoken exclusively to the family of Welsh teenager Bethany Smith who have confirmed their daughter died instantly after falling off the mast of the luxury yacht. The death certificate will record death by misadventure.
David and Sarah Smith along with Beth’s brother Bryn will pay tribute to their daughter and sister and scatter her ashes on Saturday 1st April 2017 in Chacachacare, Trinidad. Family friends and some crew member of Germania Nova will attend the gathering to celebrate the 18 year old sailing enthusiast’s life. An investigation into Bethany’s death is ongoing.
16 March 2017
Bethany Smith, 18, was cleaning the mast of the 60-metre luxury yacht Germania Nova when she fell onto the deck.
The teen, from Glyn-Dyfrdwy, Denbighshire, Wales, was taken to the Port Antonio Hospital in Portland, Jamaica, but later died of multiple injuries.
According to the local newspaper, Jamaica Observer, Bethany suffered the fall after the ropes which were tying her to the yacht’s mast came undone. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
The 18-year-old sailing enthusiast was working as a junior deckhand on the luxury schooner Germania Nova. She had joined the yacht a year earlier, after reportedly falling in love with it when she saw it in Trinidad.
Bethany Smith and her brother Bryn left the UK with their parents David and Sarah Smith 10 years ago to sail around the world on their yacht. The Smiths travelled to 19 countries in 9 years and homeschooled their children. They first cruised around the Mediterranean, then went on to the Canary Islands before crossing the Atlantic. The family then sailed to the Caribbean. Bethany documented their voyages in her blog, http://www.flutingtootingbethany.com/ .
Friends of her parents have set up a GoFundMe memorial fund to help the family with the expenses following the tragedy. Over $12,000 has already been donated.
On the GoFundMe page, Bethany is described as “a generous person and a ray of sunshine who brought laughter and music into the lives of those she met”.
Niall Robinson, the partner in Hill Robinson Yacht Management, the company which charters the Germania Nova, released a statement yesterday, which reads: “ We are desperately sad to confirm that a tragic accident has occurred on Germania Nova leading to the fatality of a crewmember.
“The crewmember’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with the family, friends and fellow crew members at this very difficult time. Hill Robinson and the Owners are doing everything possible to support the family and friends and of course an immediate investigation is already underway.”
YBW ‘s Digital Content Producer Katy Stickland is a friend of the Smiths and taught Bethany to dive when the family was cruising Tobago.
“Beth brought joy and touched the lives of everyone who came into contact with her and all of us are worse off with her no longer in our lives,” remembers Katy.
“She was a caring, special, intelligent, beautiful and talented young woman, who was just starting her professional sailing career and she was so excited about working on Germania Nova.
“She was passionate about sailing and had such knowledge having lived on board since she was a child, and all of us could see that she was destined for great things. She was truly unforgettable. This tragedy has left everyone who knew her heartbroken.”

Fatality aboard sailing yacht Germania Nova
A crewmember dies after falling from the mast aboard the schooner….
Yacht management agency Hill Robinson announced in a press release yesterday that on 14 March a crewmember died in a tragic accident aboard 59.80m Germania Nova in Jamaica.
“The crewmember's next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with the family, friends and fellow crewmembers at this very difficult time,” said the announcement, signed by partner Niall Robinson. “Hill Robinson and the owners are doing everything possible to support the family and friends and of course an immediate investigation is already underway.”
The sailing yacht was docked in the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica, at the time of the accident. Local news sources initially said that a male crewmember had died, but revised the story to say that a teenage female British national had fallen to the deck while working up the mast. She suffered multiple injuries and later died in hospital.
There is always an element of risk in handling large, powerful sailing yachts, which professional crew are well aware of, and working the spars and rigging is especially hazardous. Serious injuries and even fatalities are not uncommon in racing conditions, but mercifully rare in other circumstances. Having sailed the world aboard her family’s yacht since she was a child, the victim was young but experienced. She had worked on Germania Nova for over a year.
A replica of the 1908 schooner Germania , designed by Max Oertz for Dr. Gustav Krupp, Germania Nova was built using identical hull lines, sail and deck plans by Factoria Naval Marin in Spain in 2011 to Germanischer Lloyd 100A5 Sailing Yacht Class notation and MCA LY2 designation.
Hill Robinson is to be commended for its prompt and sensitive media management of a tragic accident. It is hoped that details of the investigation will be released as soon as possible, so that lessons can be learned and such incidents avoided in the future.
“The investigation is already well underway and I hope it won’t be too long before we can provide further information,” a spokesperson for Hill Robinson assured SuperyachtNews .
Out of respect for the company’s efforts to protect her family, we prefer not to name the crewmember on our website at this time. But a gofundme memorial fund is online for those who wish to make a contribution to help the family meet the major expenses resulting from their sad loss. To find this, use the search word ‘Jamaica’ on the gofundme website .

British teenager dies 'after falling from mast of yacht' she was working on in Jamaica
Bethany Smith, 18, suffered multiple injuries when ropes came undone on the mast of the vessel she was wiping down
- 19:44, 15 Mar 2017
- Updated 20:18, 15 Mar 2017
A British teenager who died after falling from a yacht in Jamaica has been praised by her loving family as a "humanitarian" and "a ray of sunshine".
Bethany Smith, 18, from Glyn-Dyfrdwy, Denbighshire, north Wales, died at Port Antonio Hospital, in Portland, yesterday afternoon, after an accident on a large boat docked at the Errol Flynn Marina.
The incident occurred on a vessel called 'Germania Nova yacht' at about 2pm.
Bethany was cleaning the mast of the vessel when the ropes became undone and she fell onto the deck, police confirmed.
She suffered multiple injuries and was taken to hospital where she died.
Bethany was brought up in a family keen on sailing and humanitarian work and the teenager had previously helped with relief efforts on the Caribbean Island of Dominica.
A GoFundMe page, set up to help the family, reads: "Bethany, beloved daughter of Sarah and David Smith, and sister to Bryn Smith, died tragically on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, when she fell off the mast of the vessel she had been working on over a year. She was 18-years-old.
"The purpose of this fund is to assist the family in meeting the major expenses resulting from this tragic event. Bethany passed away in Jamaica. Bethany's father, Dave, is working in the Netherlands.
"Her mother, Sarah, is in Trinidad and her brother, Bryn, is in Antigua. The costs of air fares, food and lodging to reunite the family on such short notice are staggering. In addition the family will incur the costs of burial.
"This family has suffered an unspeakable loss. This fund will help alleviate a portion of their financial stress, so they don't have to worry about the costs of being together to lay Bethany to rest."
"Bethany had been sailing the world with her family on the sailing vessel CAPE since she was a child. They had sailed from their home in Wales to the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Caribbean," the post continues.
"In Gambia, they did humanitarian work, and Bethany continued that tradition by participating in relief efforts for the Caribbean Island of Dominica.
"Bethany will be remembered for being a generous person and "a ray of sunshine" who brought laughter and music into the lives of those she met.
"This memorial fund is going directly to the Smith family to help pay for the unexpected funeral costs and other financial challenges the family may face during this time.
"Please help in any way you can to ease the financial burden on this beloved family."

By Dorie Cox
Deckhand Bethany Smith, 18, died in an accident onboard S/Y Germania Nova, a 181-foot schooner, on March 14 in Jamaica. The yacht was docked in the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica according to Christine Downer, acting marina manager.

In her blog (Flutingtootingbethany), Ms. Smith wrote that she and her family had visited 19 countries in nine years. In entries dated in 2015, Ms. Smith described her work as a volunteer at a school teaching English to disadvantaged teens, sailboat racing with her brother in Grenada Sailing week, and dockwalking in Antibes where she dayworked on S/Y Rowdy, which led to her joining the crew for Antibes Panerai Classic Regatta.
She had completed her Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) crew training that year.
The yacht’s charter management company, Hill Robinson, released a statement regarding the incident.
“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and fellow crew members at this very difficult time,” the statement read. “Hill Robinson and the owners are doing everything possible to support the family and friends and, of course, an immediate investigation is already under way.”
Staff from the Errol Flynn Marina also offered support.
“We would like to express our condolences to the captain, crew and family in their time of grief and will continue to offer any assistance needed to get them through the process,” Downer said.

Sadly I knew the crew member. Her name is Bethany Smith, originally from Wales. She was a truly great person and she spent most of life sailing around the world with her family. This is really shocking news and its such a shame for this to happen. She would have turned 19 today

Sailing yacht Germania Nova now for sale with Dolphin Yachts
The 59.47 metre sailing yacht Germania Nova has changed central agency and is now listed for sale with André Barbier at Dolphin Yachts - International Yacht Brokers .
Built in steel by Spanish yard Factoria Naval de Marin to a design by Max Oertz , Germania Nova was delivered in 2011 as a replica of the 1908 classic Germania , using the same hull lines, deck and sail plans. The two yachts may look identical, but Germania Nova has a thoroughly modern heart beating in her traditional hull. Unlike the original, Germania Nova boasts an engine, state-of-the-art navigational equipment, a professional galley and air-conditioning.
Accommodation is for up to 10 guests in five cabins comprising a master suite and four doubles, all with en suite bathrooms. The interior is bright and spacious with egg shell white painted deckheads, bulkheads, and most cabinetry, richly accented with varnished mahogany surfaces, furniture, and cabin soles.
On deck, Germania Nova 's traditional appearance is deceivingly contemporary. Of her 21 bronze drum winches, 15 are hydraulically powered, while her cleats and boom fittings are finished in bead blasted stainless steel. Meanwhile, the varnished deck houses and skylights are teak veneered aluminium structures to save weight and ensure watertight integrity.
On the technical side, Germania Nova has eight sails made from Dacron and fashioned in the classic style with leather reinforced corners to maintain the period look.
Each sail is raised and sheeted using hydraulic winches, while manual winches are used for lighter work such as running backstays. Under power, a single 402hp Deutz diesel engine gives her a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 2,000 nautical miles.
Germania Nova is asking €4,950,000

Due to the international and fluid nature of the yachting business and the fact there is no global central industry listing service to which all charter yachts subscribe it is impossible to ascertain a truly up-to-date view of the market. We are a news and information service and not always informed when yachts leave the charter market, or when they are recently sold and renamed it is not clear if they are still for charter. Whilst we use our best endeavors to maintain accurate information, the existence of a listing on this website should in no way supersede official documentation supplied by representatives of a yacht.
