Hatteras GT54

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: September 7, 2011

Stepping aboard the new Hatteras GT54 brought me back to my roots. I’ve been running Hatteras yachts since the company introduced its first model — a 41-footer — in 1960. Sporting a pair of 275 hp Lincoln V-8 gasoline engines, it hit 20 knots, not fast by today’s standards. Yet, even then, Hatteras had a reputation for building boats like battleships.

Which brings us to the new GT54. Sixteen feet longer than the first Hatteras I ran, this model boasts an additional 2,650 horses and posted more than double the top speed. It may have lighter, more advanced construction, but Hatteras has not sacrificed its historic seakindliness. As test day proved, the smallest of the three new GT series sport-fishing convertibles showed the new boats are still as tough as their predecessors.

Outside the inlet, a north wind at 20 knots generated three- to four-foot seas near shore that quickly built to eight- to 10-footers a short way out. I managed a top speed of 41.3 knots along the sheltered beach but was impressed by the GT54’s handling inshore and off. Hatteras’ unique mechanical differential-steering system turns the inboard rudder more than it turns the outboard rudder, thereby creating a tighter turn than other boats this size do at such speed. But beware: At harbor speeds, the GT54 can throw an impressive wake unless you take one engine out of gear.

Backing down proved impressive. I charged to 9.5 knots in reverse before a drop of water came over the transom. The scuppers exit through the outer hull, hidden in the profile as they drain out the aft end of the splash/rub rail. Ingenious and very effective.

The cockpit easily accommodates two anglers plus three mates, even with the Pompanette fighting chair. The work space seems even roomier with all your guests up out of the way on the mezzanine, where there are food/bait freezers, drink coolers and an Eskimo ice maker with dump. There’s enough cold stowage to fish and entertain on a grand scale.

This hull sported a livewell in the portside sole, a fish box to starboard and lazarette access under the fighting chair’s footrest. The fish boxes are a tad shallow due to their locations atop the prop tunnels.

The interior is strikingly different from traditional Hatteras styling. A small island in the galley provides more room to maneuver as you cook and serve. However, I’d like to see the granite counters, banisters and such be rounded at the corners. Fall against one in a sea and it will surely leave a mark. Galley appliances include refrigerator/freezer drawers, a microwave/convection oven, ceramic cooktop and slide-out drawers behind cabinet doors. The dinette seats four adults; you could easily replace the nearby salon’s storage box/coffee table with a table for dining at the L-shape settee.

The flawless woodwork throughout the interior lends an ambience of simple, elegant luxury. Huge windows afford unobstructed views whether seated or standing, and are so expansive that ambient light in the salon is exceptional.

Belowdecks, the master cabin to port has a queen berth with storage beneath and a private en suite head with shower. Across the corridor, the crew’s quarters, several steps down, sport fairly tight single berths. The forward cabin has an island double and shares a head with the crew cabin.

Access the engines via the centerline hatch in the cockpit. Space between the engines is tight, but you get fabulous storage space outboard of the engines. I say “storage space” because there’s nothing requiring regular maintenance there.

Hatteras includes numerous features that make routine maintenance such as oil changes, acid-flushing the air-conditioning lines and cleaning the membranes on the watermaker easier on the crew. The single fire-retardant, fiberglass fuel tank integrated into the hull on centerline means you’ll never need to transfer fuel between tanks again.

Signs of the times? The Hatteras GT54 sports nothing but greener, more cost-effective LED lighting — both AC and DC. Additionally, Hatteras has switched over to digital controls through KEP touch-screen displays. But perhaps the most significant improvement is what you can’t actually see: resin infusion used in the hull construction, which makes for a stronger, lighter and “greener” boat, thanks to a more precise use of raw materials. Hatteras sells each GT on a semicustom basis. Each boat is different, so it’s hard to pin down a base price.

In all, the GT54 performed with remarkable grace in adverse sea conditions, just as I remembered on that first 41-footer. History repeats itself.

Hatteras 54Cs Hit the Market

  • By Victor Tan
  • August 23, 2022

Hatteras 54 Convertible

Across its 54 feet length overall, the Hatteras 54 Convertible has three staterooms and two heads for overnight runs as a capable fishing machine. The build for bluewater duty includes a solid fiberglass hull bottom with Divinycell coring in the hull sides, deck and superstructure.

Twin 1,550 hp Caterpillar C30 diesels provide a 32-knot cruise speed. The 149-square-foot cockpit has a Release fighting chair for big-fish battles. As of July 2022, eight Hatteras 54 Convertibles were available, ranging from $749,000 to $879,000.

From the Archive

“Everyone in our five-member crew found a place on the fully outfitted flybridge. Small touches such as drip moldings above all compartment doors keep interior spaces dry. Rod stowage is plentiful under the two settees. An optional electronics console drops from sight with the touch of a button. The electronic Caterpillar engine displays are on the tournament helm.”

Full Chapter One

  • Hatteras Yachts

by David Pascoe

A long with Bertram and Hinckley, Hatteras has the distinction of being one of the first three production fiberglass boat builders to start up in around 1960. Oddly enough all three survive today, although Bertram may yet go by the wayside. The company was started in 1959 by North Carolina knitting mill owner Willis Slane who, as word has it, just wanted to build a good strong boat for himself for fishing the outer banks. What followed is one of the unparalleled success stories of the fiberglass boat building industry.

Oddly enough, of the three major startups in around 1960 - Bertram, Hinckely and Hatteras - the former are know for producing boat hulls that almost never blister. Hatteras should have applied for a patent on the blistering process, for they were one of the worst offenders. Most likely this is because Hatteras has always painted their boats and has used low quality gelcoats that are prone to blistering, as well as lower quality resins, for gel coat alone does not account for the problem.

For the most part, Hatteras built balsa cored boats. In earlier years, up through about 1980, the hulls were solid glass, and then cored hull sides appeared. Decks and house tops have always been balsa cored. In fact, were it not for Hatteras, Baltec would probably not be in business today. If you want to know how good balsa is as a core material, try to find a Hatteras with a core problem. Out of thousands of boats produced, there are only a few. And speaking of balsa, if you've ever noticed that Hatteras yachts are notably quieter inside than most others, that's because of the wonderful acoustic properties of balsa.

When it comes to building good quality, consistent and reasonably priced motor yachts, no one had been able to hold a candle to Hatteras. Unlike Bertram, Hatteras recognized that wives often controlled the checkbook in the family, and didn't make the mistake of forgetting this important marketing factor like Bertram did. Thus, when the recession of '89 struck, Hatteras was at least poised to survive it, whereas Bertram had locked themselves into the sport fishing market exclusively, with their ugly formica interiors, and manly appointments. Thus, they went down with the end of the free-spending era of the 1980's. But were it not for the parent company's deep pockets, even Hatteras probably wouldn't have survived, for large boat sales were almost nonexistent for three long years.

Yet Hatteras has since abandoned a major part of the market that they had filled for so long, the medium size sport fisherman and motor yachts of a type that was renowned for their sea keeping abilities, having been designed by the famous designer Jack Hargrave. Two prominent examples of which are the 45 Convertible and 43 motor yacht. Today, the smallest boat they make is a fifty footer priced at well over one million dollars. And with Bertram not gaining much attention in the mid size range either, the days when we had a few good quality, rugged offshore type boats to choose from are over. All we are left with is an aging fleet of older Hatterai and Bertrams. The Bertram fleet once consisted of 21, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 42, 43, and 46 foot models. All that's left is are outrageously priced 36 and 39 footers which are rarely seen on the waterfront these days.

Unfortunately, no one has rushed in to fill the void created by the withdrawal of these two companies. Oh, sure a few have tried, but the most recent offerings don't even come close to duplicating these legends. So why did Hatteras abandon this market? Or why isn't Bertram doing well with their three boats under 50 feet? In a word, cost and lower profit margins.

To produce boats of this quality today simply costs more than the market will bear. Plus, they probably can't compete with the lower cost price leaders since fewer and fewer people are willing to pay the freight for better quality. Boats have gotten too fancy as people demand more and more amenities, more plush interiors, more appliances, electronics and whatnot. When you add up the cost of all this, and factor in the additional cost factor of substantially higher quality structures and systems, it's not hard to see how good quality boats quickly exceed the reach of most of those who desire them.

But, there is an additional factor as well, which is that the design of a good sea boat is not amenable to the creation of the vast interior spaces that people want today. Boat owners willingly sacrifice sea keeping ability for interior space. Mom takes one look at any good sea boat and says, "But it's so small inside! That Sea Ray was twice as big." Yeah, Mom, it is. but you can't shove a wide flat surface against an oncoming wave and not end up getting splattered against a bulkhead. There's no way you're going to take a Sea Ray to sea as you would a Hatteras.  Mom doesn't want to go to sea anyway. She'd prefer to stay lashed to the dock, close to the swimming pool and tennis courts. And that's why we don't have any more 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 53, 43, 45, 46, or 48 foot Hatterases anymore. People want floating condos, and the market will always give them what they want so long as enough of them want it. But there aren't enough people that want good sea boats.

So, until people decide either that they're tired of beating their brains out in floating condos, or get tired of staying tied to the dock, or just puttering around in protected waters, or they stop demanding the utmost in luxury, (I'm not holding my breath) the days of the middle class Hatteras are over.

Sad, but very true.

2013 Hatteras 54 Convertible

They say that every boat represents a compromise of some sort. The Hatteras 54 Convertible proves the exception to the rule thanks to her impressive speeds, shallow draft, soft ride and extensive list of standard amenities. Featuring a 4-foot, 2-inch draft and a convex hull design that revolutionized the Hatteras fleet, the 54 provides access to shallow ports and increased performance across all rpm ranges. With 1,650-hp diesel engines, the 54 cruises a comfortable 35 knots, burning just over 100 gallons per hour. Top speeds approach 40 knots. That's optimum performance by any measure. Thanks to her sophisticated design, solid construction and creature comforts, you can indeed have it all with the 54 Convertible.

Fully Fishable Cockpit. The 126-square-foot cockpit features a mezzanine deck with padded seating to keep the crew comfortable and provide improved visibility of baits in the spread. Under the seat cushions lies storage for gear, bait, ice, and tackle, as well as a centerline access hatch to the engine room. An oversized transom door will accommodate the tournament winner, and an 80-inch fish box is positioned in the cockpit sole for quick access when the meat fish come calling.

Top-Notch Flybridge. A few steps up the portside ladder from the cockpit, the 150-square-foot flybridge features a pod-style helm with power-actuated console that opens and closes to keep all of your electronics well protected against saltwater intrusion and theft. Single-lever electronic controls are positioned for maximum ease of use and visibility, whether throttling up or backing down on a fish. Forward of the helm is an insulated drink box and two bench seats with rod storage beneath.

Convex Hull Shape. The 54's hull shape features a "warped" bottom with a sharp entry forward and highly variable deadrise that becomes nearly flat at the transom. The convexity of the bow lessens wave impact and results in an incredibly smooth ride in head seas. Flatter sections aft reduce water resistance, improving handling at low speeds and increasing stability while planing. Specially designed strakes that bisect the stagnation line (the point at which the water's surface meets the hull bottom once on plane) provide additional lift and improve tracking in all conditions. Double chines and a flared bow deflect spray out and away from the boat. There's simply no better ride in the industry.

Deep Propeller Pockets. Our hull tunnels, including those on the 54, are deeper than most, which reduces drag and allows for larger propellers to be tucked in tighter to the hull. That tight fit provides uniform containment around the blades and eliminates the slapping of water against the hull that typically comes with a flat bottom. It also helps accelerate the water through the blades for better performance and results in a shallower draft. The 54, in fact, draws an enviable 4'2".

Sophisticated Salon. The 54's 195-square-foot salon features a genuine wood interior, custom L-shaped sofa, and modern entertainment center with a large flat-screen TV, surround-sound stereo system, DVD/CD player, and VCR. Attention to detail is evident in the slotted wood cornices that route our air conditioning and the wood blinds that complement the warm, rich interior ambiance. This is a place of refined elegance and relaxation -- the perfect spot to unwind after a day on the water.

Handsome Galley & Dinette. The fully equipped galley will delight onboard chefs with its natural wood cabinets, four-burner cook top, microwave/convection oven, garbage disposal, icemaker, and under-counter freezer and refrigerator drawer units. Storage is exceptional, with six 36-inch-deep cabinet drawers for provisions and cooking utensils. Practicality continues in the adjacent chart flat area and in the Amitico® vinyl-strip flooring, which provides the appeal of teak but is effortless to maintain. Opposite the galley and close at hand is an L-shaped dinette with extra storage space below the seat.

Stately Staterooms. Thanks to a generous 17'3" beam, sleeping accommodations include three staterooms and two heads. The elegant master, located amidships, features a queen berth with cedar-lined storage underneath and a sliding pocket door for privacy. Air conditioning disbursement comes through fluted wood valances for uniform comfort. Wood nightstands and a dresser enhance the rich look and provide ample storage, while the flat-screen TV and stereo with CD player offer after-hours entertainment. The private master head includes a stall shower with seat, solid surface countertops, and easy-care Amtico® flooring, along with a wood cabinet, separate linen storage, and a mirrored vanity. Forward, the VIP stateroom boasts a walk-around island berth. Twin berths in the third stateroom will make a pair of guests, or the kids, feel right at home.

hatteras 54 motor yacht review

Stevep5050 New Member

hatteras seemed to manufacture less of the 54 then other models 53,56,58 was there any issues with this model and does anyone have any performance numbers on the 54. Actual numbers fuel burn at different RPM and performance at different RPM ie 1800 RPM 14 knots 35 gallons an hour

I delivered one a few years ago, out of savannah incidentally. Nice boat with great engine room. I forgot the fuel burn on plane but at hull speed, 9.3kts, th 8v92s burned around 11gph. Like most of these boats it was no speed demon but woudl get on plane and cruise around 18 kts if I rememember correctly. I like the unusual galley layout with the door to the pilot house in th middle, it is more open then th other hatts with better visibilty aft. Two things I really don't like... The whitewash wood finish which in my opinion looks like cheap Office Depot furniture compared to the more traditional veneers. And most importantly the lack of an aft deck with a narrow balcony instead. Sure you get a huge saloon but th aft deck is where most people spend the most time on a boat But if you want to spend most of your time inside, then it s a great boat.

Pascal is describing the ED model. I think the op is talking about the classic 54 which still has 8V92's but split engine rooms and galley down. Most classics had teak interior. 40 gph at 15 knots. 18 gph at 10 knots. WOT is around 17.5 and they like deep water. Built like tanks. Don't have to worry about fuel tanks failing. Rock stars, stabilized and updated sell for $225K

+1 on what Riverdance said. There was a recent "lightening strike" sale of a 1987 model, reportedly a "10" in Annapolis which brought in the low $300's. The 54 hull was later extended to 60. It is my understanding that they performed better with the extended waterline length.
"The 54 hull was later extended to 60..." Not by Hatteras. That hull was never used for any other models.
I stand corrected. The 60 was 10" wider in beam that the 54.

I wish Hatteras still had some of the smaller models. I know many owners very happy with older 53, 54, and 56's. A lot of people who would choose those over say an equivalent length Grand Banks.

Rock Star meaning a highly well cared for and updated boat. The market values have firmed up this year with more shoppers and fewer cruise ready boats. May be hard to duplicate the 2010-2013 sale price going forward.

SeaEric said: ↑ You have to look at lots of boats. Buy that one that feels right and that you like the best. I'd add the Hatt 52 CPMY (1990 to 1999) to the list. The profile hurts my eyes, but the layout, space and function is amazing. A nice early to mid-90's GM 892 powered 52 should be doable for around $200K. The later Cat powered versions bring premium $$. I'd also add the later series II 58 MY (1985 to 1987) to your search. She is the 18'2" beam with a nice aft deck and essentially the same but larger galley down 3 stateroom floor plan as the 53 or 54 classic. IMO the best reason to stay with a pre-1985 Hatt 53 is the GM 71 series power as opposed to GM 92 series. Lots of debate about 71's vs. 92's. You can do that research if you're inclined. I think I may have perhaps met you on Sunday. If so, you're working with a very knowledgeable broker. I'm sure that you'll connect with the right boat. Click to expand...
Do not overlook a 58' Bertram MY? '84/'85 with teak interior stability of a bulldozer 12V71TI Detroits King full walk around master bert Huge air conditioned aft deck with wing doors Deep V hull built like a tank Small F/B but who goes up there anyway Trap door from the galley crawl back to the ER keeps you thin & fit A bit loud underway but at certain RPM's you can outrun the deep exhaust sound Meal & Owner Absent lights, standard bow thruster Yes its a 32vt system but isn't more better???? I would never promote a specific boat here just sayin', what if???
