The world’s largest sailing yachts.

The world ranking of the largest sailing yachts has changed greatly in recent years, with six of the ten entries delivered in the last decade. By 2026, we can anticipate even more changes to the leaderboard. There are four serious large sailing yachts currently in build – three of which are under construction in the Netherlands at Royal Huisman.

As it stands today, the global list of the largest sailing yachts is a contentious topic. The point in question is the 142.8-metre behemoth SAILING YACHT A. Some argue that Nobiskrug’s sail-assisted motor yacht does not classify as a sailing yacht, while others do. We fall in the latter camp – she has sails, so she’s made our list!

Here is the rundown of the world’s ten largest sailing yachts:

142.81m | SAILING YACHT A | Nobiskrug | 2017

The world’s largest sailing yacht is German. Built by Nobiskrug to a design by Philippe Starck, with naval architecture by Dykstra Naval Architects, SAILING YACHT A is a true icon in the superyacht fleet.

SAILING YACHT A is huge; she boasts an epic 12,558 GT of interior volume. To put that into perspective, SAILING YACHT A is more voluminous than KORU, BLACK PEARL, EOS, ATHENA, MALTESE FALCON, and AQUIJO combined! Accommodation is available for 20 guests and 54 crew, and power is drawn from twin MTU hybrid engines for a top speed of 21 knots. Her carbon fibre masts are 100 metres tall.

127m | KORU | Oceanco | 2023

At 127 metres in length, KORU is not only the second largest sailing yacht in the world, but she’s also the largest private yacht ever built in the Netherlands, overshadowing even the largest Dutch-built motor yacht, LAUNCHPAD, by nine metres.

Built by Oceanco to a design by Dykstra Naval Architects for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, KORU was kept a closely guarded secret throughout her build. Still, very little is known about the superyacht, aside from the fact that her timeless and contemporary interiors are the work of the residential and commercial design house Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi. The studio has just one other yacht in its portfolio: the 52.69-metre Feadship ADVENTURE.

The name KORU is Māori and means ‘new beginnings.’ KORU offers accommodation for 18 guests and 36 crew. Key highlights include three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. She is believed to have nearly 3,500 GT of interior volume.

106.7m | BLACK PEARL | Oceanco | 2018

BLACK PEARL is the third-largest sailing yacht in the world, recently ousted from the second spot when Oceanco delivered the 127-metre KORU. She is also one of the very few sailing yachts designed by the award-winning Nuvolari Lenard. The Italian studio partnered with sailing yacht expert Ken Freivokh Design for the exterior lines and solely managed the interior spaces. BLACK PEARL’s naval architecture is by Dykstra Naval Architects.

BLACK PEARL is teeming with innovations, including a sophisticated energy-generation solar system and a high-tech DynaRig setup. She has a hybrid propulsion system, and highlights include a convertible beach club that doubles as a cinema. With six staterooms, up to 12 guests can be accommodated onboard.

largest sailing yacht cruise

92.92m | EOS | Lürssen | 2006

The German shipbuilder Lürssen has delivered just two sailing yachts, and true to nature, the most recent build ranks as one of the largest in the world. Lürssen built EOS for the venture capitalist and CEO of Twentieth Century-Fox, Barry Diller. EOS was designed by Langan Design Partners with interiors by Francois Catroux.

EOS has sailed the world, clocking up more than 200,000 nautical miles since her delivery. In 2011, following a refit at Royal Huisman, disaster struck when a fire broke out onboard while cruising the Norwegian fjords. She swiftly returned to Huisman for repairs. EOS has been regularly maintained and recently undertook substantial work at Lürssen Yacht Refit & Services.

largest sailing yacht cruise

90m | ATHENA | Royal Huisman | 2004

ATHENA, Royal Huisman’s flagship sailing yacht, was built for the US software developer Jim Clark. With three enclosed decks, ATHENA rivals motor yachts of the same size for interior space. Her exterior lines and clipper bow are the work of Pieter Beeldsnijder Design, while Rebecca Bradley Interior Design undertook the mammoth task of curating her 1,103 GT of interior volume.

Dykstra Naval Architects beautifully engineered ATHENA to ensure strong performance even in light conditions. Accommodation is available for 10 guests and 18 crew. She has been impeccably maintained, with regular refit appointments at Huisfit, a subsidiary of Royal Huisman, MB92, and Lürssen.

largest sailing yacht cruise

88m | MALTESE FALCON | Perini Navi | 2006

Commissioned by the late venture capitalist Tom Perkins, MALTESE FALCON is a towering feat of engineering. This sailing yacht is built to perform; she regularly competes in some of the world’s most esteemed regattas. Her performance comes from three free-standing rotating carbon-fibre masts, with a 25,800-square-foot sail plan.

MALTESE FALCON was delivered in 2006 and still, nearly two decades on, remains Italy’s largest sailing yacht to date. Designed by Ken Freivokh Design, with naval architecture by Dykstra Naval Architects, this super sailing yacht is high-tech and fashioned with industrial chic. Accommodation is available for 12 guests across six gorgeous staterooms. MALTESE FALCON is one of the most sought-after sailing yachts for charter.

When AQUIJO first hit the water in 2016, she was Oceanco’s flagship sailing yacht and the second-largest built in the Netherlands. Since then, Oceanco has superseded AQUIJO not once, but twice, with the delivery of BLACK PEARL and then KORU.

AQUIJO is the result of a collaboration between Oceanco and Vitters. The two Dutch shipyards worked together on this performance-driven sailing yacht, which still stands as the largest ketch-rigged yacht in the world. Her design and naval architecture are by Tripp Design Naval Architects, while Dölker + Voges GmbH oversaw her interiors. AQUIJO offers accommodation for 12 guests and draws power from twin Caterpillar engines.

81m | SEA EAGLE | Royal Huisman | 2020

SEA EAGLE, delivered in 2020, is the most voluminous superyacht built by Royal Huisman to date. The 81-metre vessel was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whiteley Design, with the latter also responsible for her interiors. The three-masted schooner boasts an impressive 2,580 square metre sail plan, and her carbon Panamax rig was constructed by the company’s sister firm, Rondal.

Before the keel was laid, Dykstra Naval Architects spent an intense year planning her engineering and design, optimising her waterline length for speed and handling. SEA EAGLE has six staterooms, accommodating 11 guests, and can host up to 14 crew members. This sailing yacht is built for unvetted freedom; she can cruise anywhere in the world and offers all the amenities one could desire on long, extended trips. SEA EAGLE is the world’s largest full aluminium sailing yacht.

77.6m | M5 | Vosper Thornycroft | 2004

When Southampton’s Vosper Thornycroft delivered M5 (formerly MIRABELLA V) in 2004, they underscored the revival of British shipbuilding. At 77.6 metres in length, M5 is not only the nation’s flagship sailing yacht; she is, in fact, the world’s largest sloop.

The super sailing yacht was designed by Ron Holland and built for Joe Vittoria, an American yachtsman who built his empire in the rental car business. However, it wasn’t until he sold her in 2014 that M5 achieved her current length. In 2013, M5 underwent a major refit at Pendennis, which, amongst the long list of works, included a stern extension of 3.2 metres. M5 offers accommodation for 16 guests and 17 crew and her unmissable feature is the towering 88.3-metre mast that can carry approximately 3,700 square metres of sail.

70m | BADIS I | Perini Navi | 2016

The second-largest Perini Navi sailing yacht was born from an ambitious commission by the lawyer-turned-software entrepreneur Bill Duker. While Duker is a serial yacht owner, this was his first new build – and he didn’t do things by half measures. When launched in 2016, BADIS I (then known as SYBARIS) was the world’s eighth-largest sailing yacht. After nearly a decade after delivery, she remains one of the 10 largest sailing yachts.

Her original name refers to the Ancient Greek civilisation of the Sybarites, famed for their self-indulgent lifestyle. In an interview with SuperYacht Times, Duker explains that the name is tongue-in-cheek, saying: “Sybaris is, if nothing else, a self-indulgence.”

Perini Navi designed the superyacht’s exterior, consulting with Philippe Briand for the naval architecture and sail plan. The Miami Beach-based design company PH Design curated the interior spaces. BADIS I has a total interior volume of 870 GT and offers accommodation for 12 guests and 11 crew. Twin MTU 16V 2000 M72 diesel engines deliver a top speed of 17.5 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12.5 knots.

A private yacht with an eventful history

SC_Capt.Komakin+Capt. Svendsen

Golden swan-shaped water taps, magnificent marble fireplaces, French antiques – as heiress to a fortune worth millions, Marjorie Merriweather Post was able to give free rein to her imagination when building her private yacht, which was launched in Kiel in 1931. Even today, every detail on the SEA CLOUD radiates the glamour of a bygone era. Her elegance seems timeless, as she has retained her unconventional charm.

CAT. A Owners’ Suite 1

Like all the original accommodations, Marjorie Merriweather Post furnished the owner’s suites herself. Whenever she traveled aboard the SEA CLOUD, these posh, private quarters were her home, so she outfitted them in opulence. Today, her personal owners’ suite maintains her exquisite touch with white Carrara marble in the fireplace and bathroom, gold-plated swan fixtures, Louis Philippe chairs, an elaborate floor-to-ceiling dressing mirror and ornate golden-trimmed ceilings. The high-end design and furnishings reflect the successful entrepreneur’s penchant for luxuriating on this private yacht in ultimate comfort.

In addition to her exquisite taste, Marjorie’s attention to detail is also on display in the owners’ suites, richly reflected in the chambers of her first husband Edward Hutton, who gifted her the majestic SEA CLOUD sailing yacht. The maple wood paneling and furnishings create a feeling of warmth and solidity offset by a light, coffered ceiling. Hutton’s bureau-bookcase secretary with mirrored glass is a particularly stunning piece. In contrast to her white bath, his is done in red Carrara marble and includes a chest of drawers and golden fixtures.

Throughout the commissioned construction of the SEA CLOUD in Kiel, Germany, and later when Marjorie was already living on board, she collected precious antiques from all over the world. As the SEA CLOUD’s original owner, Marjorie designed the interiors of her luxury sailing yacht with such attention to detail because she wanted to offer her daughter, Dina Merrill, a wonderful and safe home on board. This is especially noticeable in this deluxe suite where Dina spent a large part of her childhood. The warm maple finishings stand out with dramatic mahogany inlays. The unusual floor plan, including an angled fireplace makes the space feel even larger.

Even though the staterooms on the captain’s and lido deck were harmoniously integrated into the SEA CLOUD after her initial construction, they still follow the design standards set on the original. Hybrid propulsion, innovative waste treatment, and energy-efficient lighting and heating make the biggest sailing boats ecologically sustainable. The designers, builders, and owners of these magnificent boats are dedicated to maintaining the natural beauty of the oceans and seas they sail.

The biggest sailing ships are technical marvels and prestige symbols. Famous people, nobility, and business executives own them. Private cruise and chartering provide the pinnacle in luxury vacation for the wealthy.

Finally, enormous sailing ships are engineering, design, and luxury wonders. These magnificent ships allow guests to traverse the world’s oceans and seas in luxury and grandeur. These 8 largest sailing yachts give a look into a world of luxury and pleasure few will ever experience.

Sea Eagle II

Sea Eagle II

Royal Huisman created Sea Eagle II , the eighth-largest sailing boat in the world. Its sleek lines and graceful design make it one of the world’s most stunning sailing yachts. It measures 81 meters long and 12.2 meters wide.

Dykstra Naval Architects, specialists in big sailing boats, designed the vessel. They collaborated with the owners to build a quick, comfortable, and sailable boat. The yacht’s three carbon fiber masts, the highest ever constructed, support a sail area of almost 3,000 square meters.

Sea Eagle II sails softly under electric power thanks to its hybrid propulsion system. The yacht’s two diesel engines power the batteries, but they may be turned off while sailing to reduce noise and pollutants. Sea Eagle II gets RINA’s Green Star designation as one of the world’s most eco-friendly sailing boats.

Did You Know?

Sea Eagle II is spectacular inside and out. Mark Whiteley designed the beautiful, comfortable interior, which can seat 12 people in six cabins. The magnificent main salon has plenty of space and a huge dining table for formal dinners. Cinema, gym, and spa with sauna and massage room.

Aquijo

Aquijo is an engineering and design marvel. Aquijo, built by Oceanco and Vitters, is the seventh-largest sailing boat in the world. It is a waterfront marvel with contemporary architecture and superb facilities.

The sailing yacht debuted in 2016 after three years of building. Dykstra and Tripp Naval Architects designed it. The yacht features a 90-meter (295-foot) carbon-fiber mast with an aluminum superstructure and hull.

One of the world’s biggest sailing boats, it has a 3,300-square-meter sail area. Two 1,100 horsepower engines power the boat to 17 knots with this sail area (31 kilometers per hour). Aquijo has a movable keel for varied sailing situations.

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

largest sailing yacht cruise

One man has died and six people are missing after a luxury yacht sank in freak weather conditions off the coast of Sicily.

The 56m British-flagged Bayesian was carrying 22 people - 12 passengers and 10 crew - when a heavy storm that created waterspouts struck early on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued and a search operation for those unaccounted for - who include the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - is continuing.

Here is what we know about the tragedy so far and how it unfolded.

What happened to the yacht?

Map of Porticello and Palermo in Sicily

The Bayesian was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning, witnesses say.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.

The storm was so fierce that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

The vessel disappeared beneath the water at about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST).

A doctor treating survivors said the ship "capsized within a few minutes".

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m (236ft) aluminium mast to break in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

However, divers on the search and rescue team have said the ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, raising questions as to whether the mast was broken.

The ship's unusually tall mast may have contributed to its sinking, according to Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the mast acted almost like a sail in the strong wind "especially with it being so high".

The extreme winds could have caught the mast and pushed the yacht over, he said.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said after the storm had passed, the crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

His crew took on board some survivors, including three who were seriously injured.

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, said he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 04:15 we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht sinking "with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Golunski, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica how she held up her one-year-old daughter Sofia to stop her from drowning.

She said the two of them and her partner James survived only because they were up on deck when the yacht sank.

They were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

Charlotte said: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves."

She added: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

What is the latest with the search?

Six passengers remain missing and the Palermo coastguard says the search and rescue operation is continuing "incessantly".

The search began on Monday and specialist divers have been working at the site since early on Tuesday morning.

One diver told Italian media the yacht was "practically intact" on its side at the ocean's basin, about 50m below the surface.

The ship's hull is obstructed with furniture and various objects, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

Divers are looking for ways to access the yacht's cabins, but they have just 10 minutes to search on each dive before they need to return to the surface, the Italian news agency Ansa has reported.

A 1cm thick glass window is also being considered as an entry point.

Francesco Venuto, a spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, told the BBC on Monday rescue teams fear the bodies of those missing "must be" in the boat.

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense. In these conditions, we should have found something by now," he added.

A specialist caving search and rescue diving team arrived from Rome on Monday, hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by Tuesday morning at the latest, the director general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said.

On Monday, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch sent a team of four investigators to carry out a preliminary assessment of the Bayesian's sinking, the BBC understands.

Who was on board?

PA Mike Lynch

There were 22 people on board when the storm hit, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

The body of one man has been recovered. He has not been formally identified, but the Palermo coastguard said he was the ship's cook. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Among the six people still missing is 59-year-old tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates".

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Afterwards, he told the BBC in an interview he had been able to prove his innocence only because he had the wealth to pay the enormous legal fees required.

The other missing people include Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is among the 15 people to have been rescued, with eight of those receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

Charlotte Golunski, her husband and daughter Sofia were also rescued and were unharmed, but taken to hospital for check-ups.

She said they had been on the yacht with a group of colleagues.

The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

A doctor based in Palermo said the "very tired" survivors were "constantly asking about the missing people".

Dr Domenico Cipolla told Reuters that one woman he treated described the trip as a "corporate holiday", with some of those on board "very young".

"There were a lot of work colleagues, friends, a few husbands, wives, or a couple of friends who had joined in," he adds.

What is a waterspout and why do they form?

A waterspout is similar to a tornado and can form over oceans, seas or large lakes.

The western half of the Mediterranean has experienced severe storms since the middle of last week.

Through Sunday night and into Monday morning, a zone of bad weather passed by the north coast of Sicily.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A waterspout is a tornado that has occurred over water rather than land.

"They can form during intense storms, on the base of cumulonimbus/thunder clouds.

"Turbulence, and the wind blowing in slightly different directions around the cloud, can cause rotation under the base of the cloud and the spout to form.

"Like tornadoes, they bring powerful winds, but instead of picking up dust and debris they cause a water mist around the column of rotating air."

What is the Bayesian, and who owns it?

EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The Bayesian yacht

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is understood to derive from the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Ms Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

A spokesperson for Camper and Nicholsons International, the firm that manages the 2008-built boat, told BBC Verify: "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

One of the world’s largest sailing superyachts sank in high winds off Sicily on Monday, causing the death of UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six other passengers and crew whose bodies were recovered from the wreck or from the sea.

The trip on the Lynch family’s yacht had been intended to celebrate his recent acquittal by a US jury, with 12 passengers on board, including his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and 10 crew members.

The Italian coastguard said the 56-metre, 540-tonne, British-flagged yacht Bayesian sank within minutes after it was hit by ferocious winds of 60 knots (over 110km/h) near Palermo.

The rapid sinking of such a large, modern and well-equipped yacht due to bad weather, rather than as a result of a collision, has raised concerns over marine safety as extreme weather events occur with more frequency and intensity.

Why did the superyacht sink?

The yacht may well have been caught in a waterspout — a form of tornado — because the extreme wind speeds were recorded only in a localised area around the harbour of Porticello, where the boat was anchored about 300 metres offshore when it was struck.

Karsten Börner, the skipper of a nearby boat, told the FT that Bayesian appeared to capsize. He said he regarded the boat as unstable and his comments suggest that it could have been the combination of high winds and Bayesian’s 72-metre mast — the world’s tallest aluminium mast, according to manufacturers Perini Navi — that triggered the disaster.

Schematic showing the scale of the Sailing Yacht Bayesian by comparing it to the size of a London bus

Even with no sails up, a boat with a tall mast has a lot of “windage”, or surface area exposed to the wind, which can tip the vessel over in a storm. The boat may have heeled over so far that it took on water through open windows, hatches or companionways.

According to Perini Navi, Bayesian had a keel that can be lifted to reduce the draught of the boat — otherwise nearly 10 metres — for easier entrance to shallow harbours. If the keel were for some reason in the raised position rather than fully extended, that could compromise the boat’s stability in a strong wind.

Bayesian

Skippers of sailing yachts with exceptionally high masts typically aim to move out of harm’s way if strong winds are forecast.

Yacht designers and sailors are nevertheless puzzled by the sinking of the boat. AIS (Automatic Identification System) tracking data shows it took 16 minutes from the time Bayesian appeared to started dragging its anchor until it sank. But it is not yet known whether vulnerable hatches were open or when water started entering the boat. Italian prosecutors are investigating possible charges of manslaughter and “negligent shipwreck”.

Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, told the Financial Times that Bayesian was “absolutely safe” and said the crew should have had time to secure the boat and evacuate passengers from their cabins.

Should we blame climate change?

Climate change is likely to have been at least a contributing factor in the Mediterranean’s unsettled and sometimes violent weather this summer. The Mediterranean is a favoured cruising ground for superyachts during the northern hemisphere summer — in winter, the wealthy prefer the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean — because the weather is typically warm and sunny, and storms are rare.

Meteorological experts have long predicted that climate change and the heating-up of oceans will help trigger more extreme weather events, including floods, droughts and more severe hurricanes.

Last week, the Mediterranean reached a median temperature of 28.9C — its highest surface temperature on record — and similar records are being broken in other seas. June was the 15th consecutive month that global sea temperatures hit a record high and forecasters predict the warmer waters may fuel an intense Atlantic hurricane season.

Will disasters at sea occur more often?

While design improvements and safety regulations have made even the smallest boats safer, the potential dangers posed by bad weather are increasing in line with the rising number of pleasure vessels at sea.

Last week, a sudden and exceptionally strong thunderstorm with wind squalls blowing at up to 53 knots (about 100km/h) swept over the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, driving several sailing and motor yachts to crash on to the shore. Among those damaged and grounded but later recovered was a luxury, 30-metre vessel made by the Monaco-based Wally Yachts .

The cause was a thunderstorm known as a “Dana”, a Spanish acronym for depresión aislada en niveles altos or isolated high-altitude depression. The bad weather also caused serious flooding in Mallorca and Menorca to the north.

How can boat makers and skippers help avoid more deaths?

The weather in the Mediterranean is often notoriously unpredictable and prone to sudden, unforecast gales — unlike the north Atlantic, where weather shifts are usually signalled days in advance by changing air pressure and cloud formations visible to the naked eye.

Safety at sea depends largely on two factors: the seaworthiness of the boat and the skill and experience of the captain and crew.

Modern boats — Bayesian was built in 2008 and refurbished four years ago — are normally built to high safety standards and equipped with electronic navigation and communications systems, as well as standard emergency gear such as life vests.

Common accidents include people falling overboard, fires on board and accidental groundings or collisions — not sinking in bad weather.

"BOOTE EXCLUSIV" ranking : The largest sailing yachts in the world - places 51-75

Sören Gehlhaus

, Uske Berndt

 ·  31.08.2023

75th Aresteas: The motor sailer with an interior volume of 488 gross tonnes offers a cinema and a large tender and toy arsenal. The Turkish shipyard laminated both the hull and superstructure from wood using the cold-moulded process. Ridade Tuncel and Aldo Viani provided the design. "Aresteas" has been looking for a new owner for some time, most recently for 12.5 million euros - three million euros less than was estimated in 2019.

No new entries in this part of the ranking, but plenty of breathtaking sailing yachts: The second part features many boats that regularly sail in regattas and where the owners are often at the helm. Anyone scrolling through the list will also recognise the large number of Perini Navis, with 32 in the top 100 alone. The longest is still "Maltese Falcon" - in sixth place at 88 metres. The others are in the 50 to 60 metre range, led by the famous 56-metre line from Ron Holland.

The "Tiara" in 55th place is a particular eye-catcher, and not just because of the gigantic sun graphic in the sails: The Ed Dubois design is an absolute rarity as a sailing yacht with a helipad. Her first owner, allegedly US-American Jonathan Leitersdorf, sold her just one year later to the enthusiastic diver, space tourist and co-founder of Cirque du Soleil: Guy Laliberté. According to his own statements, "Tiara's" open-air cinema in the style of a Bedouin tent convinced the family man to buy a finished yacht rather than continue with his time-consuming cat project. As a passionate DJ, the busy entrepreneur had various mixing consoles installed on board the 54-metre yacht to provide his guests with top musical entertainment. The alloy yacht with its classic John Munford interior was last refitted in 2019 and has been for sale at Y.CO since the end of 2021. Price on request.

"Elena of London": replica of a transatlantic winner

Place 53, the "Elena of London", is also a rarity as an exact replica of a historic ship. The original "Elena" won the Transatlantic Race in 1928, when she was 17 years old. The Factoría Naval de Marín shipyard used 300 hand drawings and plans by American designer Nathanael Herreshoff for the replica of the regatta schooner and welded the steel hull together on this basis. She can currently be chartered for 100,000 euros a week and purchased for just under nine million euros.
