- The 10 Longest Rivers in Kentucky
Interestingly, all the rivers located within Kentucky eventually flow into the great Mississippi River. All of them are said to flow into the Mississippi River because almost all of them flow to the Ohio River which is a major tributary of the considerably larger Mississippi River. Those that don’t go through the Ohio River eventually find a way to the Mississippi.
The 10 Longest Rivers In Kentucky
In terms of rivers that pass through Kentucky, the longest river is the Mississippi River with an enormous length of 2,320 miles. In the second position, the Ohio River comes in with a length of 981 miles while the Cumberland River is third with an approximate length of 688 miles. Closing the top five is the Tennessee River in fourth and the Green River in fifth with approximate lengths of 652 miles and 384 miles respectively. The Tug Fork is tenth with a shorter length of only 159 miles.
Mississippi River
The Mississippi is a massive river that flows entirely within the US although its drainage basin extends all the way to Canada. With a massive length of 2,320 miles, it flows through the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, and Illinois. Compared to the second longest river, the Ohio River, the Mississippi is almost three times as long.
Green River
The Green River of Kentucky is the longest river in Kentucky that originates and ends entirely within the state. With a length of about 384 miles, it is considerably smaller (about six times shorter) than the Mississippi and is also a tributary of the Ohio River. The river originates in Kentucky’s Kings Mountain, passes through the Mammoth Cave National Park, and links up with the Ohio River at Evansville in Indiana. The name was set in honor of General Nathanael Greene of the American Revolutionary War.
Cumberland River
The Cumberland River also begins and ends in the state of Kentucky but it flows through Tennessee as well. The considerable length of 688 miles is responsible for the drainage of an area with a size of about 18,000 square miles in both Kentucky and Tennessee. The Cumberland River starts at the Appalachian Mountains and then, close to Celina, snakes into Tennessee. Finally, it flows back to Kentucky at a section of land that is known as the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Joinery with the Ohio River happens at Smithland.
The Tug Fork River is the shortest in this list with a small length of about 159 miles. The Tug Fork originates in the Appalachian Mountains and flows through Welch and all the way to Kentucky’s Levisa Fork at Louisa. At the endpoint, it joins up with the Big Sandy River which, in turn, joins up with the Ohio River and eventually drain into the Mississippi River.
The Kentucky River
Sharing a name with the state, the Kentucky River has a length of about 260 miles and is seventh on this list. Much of the central region of Kentucky attributes its drainage and water needs to this river and its tributaries.
Rank | River | Length (miles) | Length (km) |

1 | Mississippi River | 2,320 | 3,730 |

Couple arrested after drugs mailed to Kentucky campground
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Two people are accused of having drugs mailed to them at a Kentucky campground.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, it happened Thursday at the Kentucky River Campground.
Deputies were called after camp workers received a suspicious envelope. Suspected heroin or fentanyl was found inside it.
The sheriff’s office says witnesses told deputies that Christopher Prokop said his girlfriend, Kirra Neal, asked him to retrieve the package for him.
He told authorities he did not know what was in it. However, according to his arrest citation, Neal admitted to knowing the package was full of drugs while being arrested.
Prokop and Neal are now facing trafficking charges.

Green River Archaeological Society of Kentucky hosting Prehistoric Indian Artifact Show
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The Green River Archaeological Society of Kentucky will be hosting a Prehistoric Indian Artifact Show this weekend at the Barren River Lodge Convention Center in Lucas, KY.
For those interested in the rich archaeological history of the Commonwealth, the show is free and open to the public.
“The Barren River show has been going on…. This will be the 51st year this is at Barren River State Park, which is the oldest historic artifact show that’s in the state of Kentucky,” said Doug Goodrum, Host of the GRAS show.
The displays at the show will be limited to prehistoric artifacts from the Continental United States, Canada, and Alaska only.
On Saturday evening, GRAS will host a special presentation at 5 p.m. in the basement of the Lodge.
The presentation will detail the work of a team of archaeologists working in Hart and Hardin counties whose discoveries have provided additions to the Paleo-Indian record of Kentucky.
“With Paleo, we’re looking at 10 to 14,000 years,” Goodrum said. “This is a site that’s been hunted for probably maybe as much as 40 years, it was a large paleo site; probably one of the largest ones in the country.”
Artifacts associated with the sites from the collections of Perry Hagan and James Powell will be on display. Those interested in checking out the presentation are encouraged to arrive early as seating is limited.
For those interested in Kentucky’s archaeological history, the show promises to be a memorable and educational experience for artifact hunters of all levels.
“I think most people that have gotten interested in this hobby, they’ve found something on their farm or they were hunting with a friend that got them out looking a little bit and and and picking up something that’s thousands of years old. It’s kind of fascinating for everyone,” Goodrum said. “These are the oldest antiques in America.”
The Barren River Lodge Convention Center is located at 1149 State Park Rd. in Lucas, KY.

Parasitic Crypto outbreak may involve Ohio pools as well as NKY
The Northern Kentucky Health Department said there are likely more cases as it investigates an outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis, better known as Crypto . And some of them are on the Ohio side of the river as well.
The Cryptosporidium parasite causes gastrointestinal illness. As of Friday afternoon, there were a dozen confirmed and "numerous" probable cases.
Spokesman Skip Tate said in an email Monday that health department officials expect the number of cases could increase significantly. He said official numbers have not changed, but since Friday the epidemiology department has been bombarded by calls from people reporting being sick.
People reporting symptoms since the health department's initial report said they attended several public pools on both sides of the river.
About half of the confirmed cases reported Friday are associated with Silverlake Water Park in Erlanger. The health department praised Silverlake's response.
"Super-chlorinating the water would typically kill almost anything, and may kill a lot of Crypto spores, but Crypto is very hard to kill so it's not 100 percent effective," he said.
"If someone has Crypto or not can only be confirmed after a test, and those tests usually take 24-48 hours to send to a lab and get back," Tate said.
What are cryptosporidiosis symptoms?
The Cryptosporidium parasite causes gastrointestinal illness marked by abdominal cramps, watery diarrhea, low-grade fever, vomiting and nausea.
Silverlake Water Park statement about Cryptosporidium outbreak
A Silverlake representative issued this statement about the outbreak and the water park's response on Monday and urged people to follow the health department's guidelines:
"We are aware of the recent Cryptosporidium (Crypto) outbreak that has impacted multiple pools in the Northern Kentucky area. Crypto is a fecal-oral spread parasite that can live in liquid, soil and on hard surfaces. Health and safety is our top priority at Silverlake and we are taking all the possible steps to ensure the pool is safe for our members, staff and guests," the statement said.
"Following the notification of the first case by the Health Department, we immediately took action to close and clean our pool. Members were notified via social media that the pool would be closing for sanitation. We closed the pool by 5 p.m. at which time we followed the protocols of the Northern Kentucky Health Department with a process called super chlorination to kill Crypto.
"The Silverlake pool was over super chlorinated to ensure the levels were well beyond what is necessary to kill Crypto. Once this process was complete and chlorine levels returned to safe levels, we were cleared by the Health Department to reopen the pool. This process took over 42 hours to complete. The outdoor pool was closed from 5 p.m. on August 9th and reopened at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11.
"In addition to the steps we are taking, we encourage all participants to practice good hygiene.
"We "are working closely with the Northern Kentucky Health Department to monitor the situation and will provide any additional updates as necessary. For more on Crypto visit, https://www.cdc.gov/cryptosporidium/about/ ."
More: Invisible danger could be lurking in the water: How to stay safe this summer
Health department guidelines regarding Cryptosporidium
The Northern Kentucky Health Department recommends the following steps as preventative measures to limit exposure to Crypto:
- Individuals who currently have diarrhea, or have had diarrhea in the last two weeks, should not use swimming pools, spray pads, or hot tubs. Individuals with Crypto should not use swimming facilities until at least two weeks after symptoms subside.
- Make every attempt not to swallow pool water.
- Practice good hygiene. Shower before swimming and wash your hands and children’s hands, after using the toilet or changing diapers. Wash your child thoroughly, especially the rear end with soap and water before swimming.
- Take your child on bathroom breaks or check diapers often.
- Change diapers in a bathroom, not poolside or on the deck premises.
- It is recommended not to allow children who are not potty-trained to be in the pool. Even diapers and swimmies are not effective in preventing Crypto transmission into pool water if the child is infected.

Kentucky gov. andy beshear talks how the democratic party plans to change florida to a swing state.
Scott Johnson , Reporter/weekend anchor
CHICAGO, Ill. – Democratic Party heavyweight Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear spoke to News4JAX about how the party plans to change Florida to a swing state.
RELATED: Governors of battleground states encourage Florida delegates at Democratic National Convention
Recommended Videos
Beshear, who was on Vice President Kamala Harris’ short list of running mates, is one of two Democratic governors of southern states.
“We make sure that we both run and govern where people live,” Beshear said. “That’s whether you have a good job, whether you can support your family, whether you can afford your next doctor’s visit, the quality of the roads and bridges you travel every day, public safety, and public education. When we govern where people live we don’t govern to the right or left, we move forward.”
RELATED: Florida delegates at DNC say Jacksonville electing Deegan as mayor shows ‘the tide is turning’
There was a lot of buzz in the room of Florida delegates about who would run for governor in Florida when Ron DeSantis’ term expires.
Beshear is trying to lay out a path for victory in a state, which like Kentucky, has a lot of Republicans, but still voted for a Democratic governor.
He also said Democrat optimism is at a peak.
“This is more excitement than I have ever seen in an election cycle,” Behsear said. “2008 was a lot of energy, but this is unparalleled. How quickly it’s come about the number of volunteers, the amount of money flowing in.”
In the room of Florida delegates, there were numerous up-and-coming politicians from the Sunshine State looking to make a move.

3 people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease after staying at a Roaring River resort
CASSVILLE, Mo. (KY3) - The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says three people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease after staying at a hotel near Roaring River State Park.
According to a news release, the three people are unassociated and stayed at the Roaring River Resort and RV Park located at 23359 State Highway 112. Officials say they came in contact with a water source within the hotel.
The three people were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease within 14 days after their stay. They stayed at the hotel in July. Officials say people can get Legionnaires’ disease by breathing in small water droplets containing Legionella bacteria.
DHSS officials are working with the hotel to assess the facility and collect samples. Preliminary results show the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water system, with confirmed results being available later this week.
State officials are working with the hotel to make improvements to the facility’s water system that will kill off Legionella in the system.
Roaring River Resort is notifying all recent guests who stayed in the hotel portion of the facility.
According to state officials, most healthy people exposed to Legionella do not get sick. However, an individual’s risk may increase if they are 50 years or older, smoke cigarettes, or have certain medical conditions, such as a weakened immune system.
Symptoms usually begin 2 to 10 days after being exposed to the bacteria, but it can take longer so people should watch for symptoms for about 2 weeks after exposure. If you develop symptoms of pneumonia within two weeks of staying, working at or visiting the Roaring River Lodge and RV Park in Cassville, seek medical attention right away.
Pneumonia symptoms typically include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Additional symptoms may be present, such as confusion, nausea or diarrhea.
Ask your doctor to test you with both a urine test and a respiratory culture. If you test positive, ask your doctor to report your illness to your local or state health department as soon as possible after your diagnosis.
To report a correction or typo, please email [email protected] . Please include the article info in the subject line of the email.
