Bareboat and Skippered Yacht Charter Company and RYA Training Centre on the West Coast of Scotland

WELCOME TO ALBA SAILING

Bareboat and skippered yacht charter company on the west coast of scotland, telephone: +44 (0)1631 56 56 30.

ALBA SAILING is Scotland’s premier independent bareboat and skippered yacht charter company – we have provided quality service for over 35 years. From our purpose built shore side premises at Dunstaffnage Marina, Oban, Argyll in West Scotland we offer a wide choice of quality yachts from 31 – 46 feet for bareboat or skippered yacht charter. Unlike many charter companies, we own the majority of the yachts in our fleet so you can be sure of not only a warm personal welcome but also of our commitment to providing you with a well maintained and well equipped yacht that you will be proud to sail.

Our base is at the heart of Scotland’s West Coast cruising grounds so the Inner Hebrides, including the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Skye, can usually be circumnavigated within one week depending on whether you use bareboat or skippered charter. Our Cruising in West Scotland page gives you a brief outline of some of the many attractions our cruising area has to offer.

We have our own Chandlery and hire shop on-site and offer a range of services including waterproof clothing hire, freshly laundered bedding and towels etc.

There is a Tourist Information Centre in Oban and they can suggest hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in and around Oban in case you would like to extend your holiday. Their website is here  or you can phone them on +44 (0)1631 563122. We have also discovered a truly excellent transport provider and their details are on the download page of our website.

Enjoy our website and please feel free to contact us directly for any further information, advice or guidance on skippered or bareboat charter in West Scotland. We are here to help. Alba Sailing is run by sailors – for sailors! We are also on hand to discuss your Chandlery and Rigging requirements.

We look forward to welcoming you to Scotland soon!

Through our yacht charter service you will see world class scenery and seascapes that can only be found in Scotland, complimented by a rich variety of heritage and culture, wildlife, superb cuisine and of course the world famous distilleries, many of which can be approached from the sea.

Take a look at our range of yacht charter boats. From a compact Jeanneau 32 to a more spacious Amel ketch and a brand new Elan 444, and then contact us to enquire about availability or any other questions you may have relating to yacht charter.

Scotland Yacht Charter - Sailing Holidays in Scotland from Argyll on the West Coast -

Sail Argyll

World class cruising

Sail Argyll

The West Coast of Scotland is one of the best sail cruising grounds in the world, and Argyll is at its heart. The sheer variety of the sailing, the spectacular scenery and wildlife, the combination of sheltered sounds, rugged islands and high mountains, the profusion of safe, beautiful and generally uncrowded anchorages and the warm welcome you will find ashore make Argyll a world class cruising area.

Sailing in Argyll is no longer wilderness sailing. The area has developed enormously over the last decade, with full service marinas, pontoons and moorings being developed, providing facilities for more yachts. Bars and restaurants serving high quality local produce are going out of their way to attract yachtsmen. All the support a cruising yacht needs – chandlers, engineers, riggers and sailmakers – is now available within Argyll.

We want this to be the most complete directory for sailing in Argyll. Please get in touch if there are any businesses you think should be included.

Cruising In Argyll

Heading North past Craignure and Lochaline, you can sail up the sheltered, but spectacular, Sound of Mull to sample the delights of Tobermory. From here, you may circumnavigate Mull in an anticlockwise direction, taking in the Treshnish Isles, Staffa and historic Iona.

If you head South from Oban down the Sound of Kerrera you may decide to stop overnight at the famous anchorage at Puilladobhrain [‘pooldoran’]. Although the anchorage can be crowded in the high season it is a beautiful spot, and the well-trodden walk across the hill to the famous Tigh an Truish pub and the Bridge Over The Atlantic is well worth the effort.

Continue South past Seil and the slate islands of Luing and Belnahua and then – if you have got the tide right – ride the Dorus Mor to picturesque Crinan. From here it is sheltered sailing for thirty miles or more down the Sound of Jura to Craighouse, Gigha or the big island of Islay with its many malt whisky distilleries and its bijou wee marina at Port Ellen.

Going North again hitch a tidal lift up the Sound of Islay and you can head for remote Colonsay and Oronsay before continuing North for the Garvellachs and Oban or, if time permits, across to sunny Tiree, rocky Coll or historic Iona before heading back to Oban down the Sound of Mull.

And this is just Argyll . . . an ideal base to explore further afield, to Skye or across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides. Let your sailing adventure start in Argyll.

From our exclusive charter base at Ardfern, the gateway to Scotland’s magnificent West Coast, we offer a wide range of quality yachts for charter. Our boats are all fully MCA coded and are very well equipped – all come with complimentary outboard motor, central heating and, on all but Colonsay, electric anchor windlasses.  In addition to what has become the 'standard' circumnavigation of Mull and some of the Inner Hebrides, many of our customers undertake a two week circumnavigation of Scotland taking in the west coast, Orkney and the Caledonian Canal.  Another popular circuit which is possible within a week long trip is through the Crinan Canal to the Firth of Clyde, and then sail down the east side of Kintyre, cross over to Ireland and then return via the Sound of Jura visiting Islay, Jura and Gigha en route. The fleet has been upgraded and now includes:

Clova, Amel Maramu 45' ketch.  Classic Blue Water Cruiser that had a major refit in 2007/08 (new engine, rigging, mizzen, electrics, batteries, galley etc) ideally suited to long distance cruising.  Coded for charter to Iceland, Faroes or further afield.

Ayla, Bavaria 44. Ayla has the four cabin version, with gives eight berths plus a further one/two in the saloon, complimented by two heads, both with shower. She has the performance deep lead keel fitted.

Jeanne - Bavaria 42 Cruiser.  Three double cabins and two spacious heads, bowthruster, chartplotter (2), radar, autopilot, deep lead keel etc combine to make a very comfortable cruising boat.

Ruby Too - Jeanneau 44i, accommodation for ten in 4 cabins plus saloon - well specified and excellent performance

Frances - Elan 444 from 2012; accommodation for 10 in 4 cabins, well specified and very comfortable

Isle of Colonsay – yacht moorings

Colonsay Community Development Company is delighted to be welcoming yachts to 6 visitor moorings; a community-led enterprise. Queen’s Bay is a tranquil spot; offering no facilities, but the best shelter on the east, and spectacular views across to Jura. It’s an ideal base from which to explore the island and the white sands of Oransay also on a day trip. Use is first come, first served. Suitable for vessels up to 45ft in length or 10 tonnes, and available from early April until late October. On foot with sturdy footwear, a walk over rough ground brings you to Colonsay’s hotel & bar restaurant, or around the headland into Scalasaig where you’ll find our island shop and welcoming Pantry. Our island’s power supply comes along the submarine cable at Queen’s Bay - a sheltered anchorage. Dropping anchor is possible in the case of a mooring not being available, however we join SSEN in discouraging yachts from dropping anchor near to where this cable is plotted – please refer to marine charts. Thank you for supporting our small community through your use of the mooring. Whether you’re staying for a week to explore, or just an afternoon, we hope you enjoy Colonsay! For closer access to Scalasaig village amenities, please check Calmac’s harbour guidance for tendering ashore there: https://www.calmac.co.uk/Colonsayharbour
