Superyacht crash video shows 77m Go colliding with Caribbean dock

Footage has emerged of a 235ft superyacht crashing into a luxury Caribbean yacht club’s pier, causing visible damage to both the yacht and the dock.

Onlookers were shocked last week (February 24) when a 235ft (77m) superyacht collided with the dock of Sint Maarten Yacht Club in the Caribbean.

Video footage of the incident shows the extent of the damage – while the pier took the brunt of it, the superyacht’s steel hull didn’t come off unscathed.

Computer malfunction was to blame for the sickening superyacht crash, according to local publication The Daily Herald , which adds that no-one was injured as a result.

The incident took place at around 1015 local time and the newspaper added that an insurer had already been to assess the extent of the damage by the end of the day.

If you think you’re having a bad day at work, spare a thought for the captain and crew who had to explain this situation to their yacht’s owner.

Man impaled through the head by piece of wood in boating crash

A man is set to undergo surgery to remove a piece of wood that became “impaled” in his head when he crashed a dinghy into an anchored yacht on the Gold Coast .

The 47-year-old local man was travelling between Sovereign Island and Paradise Point when he crashed into the yacht near The Esplanade about 3.30pm on Sunday.

“It looks like this dinghy was certainly travelling at a rate of knots,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles told ABC radio on Monday.

“And there is some indication, at this stage, that alcohol’s been involved in this incident.”

Two men, aged 41 and 56, also aboard the dinghy escaped injury.

The injured man, who police said was the “skipper” of the dinghy when it crashed, was “impaled” by the “large piece of wood” that went “in through his head, in behind his eye”, Knowles said.

The trio arrived at the dock when they asked an off-duty doctor there to help remove the piece of wood, according to Knowles.

“(They) indicated they wanted to remove it then and there, at the scene,” he said.

“Thankfully the doctor was able to intervene ... and said, ‘This is not the time and place to be starting to remove that piece wood’.”

The man was taken Gold Coast University Hospital with what paramedics described as a “life-threatening” injury.

He remains in a critical condition on Monday and is set to undergo surgery to remove the foreign object from his head later in the day.

The two other men in the dinghy “scurried off” from the scene, Knowles said, but have since been found and are being questioned by police.

No one was aboard the yacht at the time.

Police are seeking the owners to alert them to the “significant” damage to the yacht, Knowles said.

A blood sample has been taken from the injured man to establish if he was drunk at the time of the crash.

Investigations continue.

Passengers scream as world’s longest cruise ship crashes into Jamaican pier

Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean ’s The Harmony of the Seas could be heard screaming as the 1,188-foot ship crashed into a pier in Jamaica .

The incident happened on Thursday when the cruise liner docked at Falmouth, a busy port on the country’s northern shore, at about 7am.

Several bits of port infrastructure were damaged in the collision, including a pier structure which was crushed by the 227,000 tonne vessel. An investigation is underway.

Passengers could be heard screaming as the ship drifted towards the port and crashed into a pier, where it was trying to dock.

“Oh my God”, one woman could be heard crying out in a video of the crash which has attracted more than 500,000 views on social media. Another passenger was heard yelling “Holy s***”.

Despite the terror felt by those aboard the Harmony, there were reportedly no injuries – although the vessel did sustain “cosmetic” damage during the collision, Royal Caribbean said in a statement to RoyalCaribbean.com .

The ship’s operator said the Harmony, a 6,687-passenger vessel which was launched in 2016, was able to continue its cruise without issue.

Jamaica’s tourism minister meanwhile told reporters that Falmouth’s port would need some repairs and would be operational this week.

“We are repairing the damaged areas at the port now,” the minister,  Edmund Bartlett, was reported by RoyalCaribbean.com as saying. “The divers are there now recovering the broken elements and we should be back in full order for the ships that come next week.”

The crash has been blamed on the harbour pilot’s “error”, with the captain of the Harmony allegedly misdirected by the harbour pilot, reports said.

The Port Authority of Jamaica said in a statement of its own on Friday that an investigation involving Royal Caribbean would be carried out and that damage to infrastructure was being assessed.

Royal Caribbean told The Independent: “During arrival in Falmouth, Jamaica,  Harmony of the Seas  made contact with an extension part of the dock. There were no injuries to guests or crew and only minor cosmetic damage to the ship’s stern. The sailing continued as scheduled.”

15-year-old died in crash when friend’s parents let son take boat, Florida lawsuit says

The parents of a 15-year-old who died in a Florida boat crash are now suing the parents of the teen who was driving the vessel.

Breck Moorefield has filed the lawsuit on behalf of her son, Collin Moorefield, who suffered “massive blunt force trauma” and was launched off a boat that crashed into a St. Petersburg dock in March, according to the Aug. 12 complaint.

The Moorefields are suing the family of the boy who was at the helm. That family doesn’t have an attorney listed in Pinellas County court records as of Aug. 22.

On March 3, the family facing the lawsuit was having a party at home when their 15-year-old son invited Collin Moorefield to go out on their 18-foot boat, the Key West, without any adults, according to the lawsuit.

But the Moorefield family says in the suit that the parents should have known their son was “ill-equipped, in-experienced or both” to operate the boat by himself without supervision or a lookout.

They said the parents didn’t make sure their son was sober or ensure there wasn’t alcohol on the boat, and they accused the 15-year-old of driving the boat while under the influence, according to the lawsuit.

There’s no age requirement to drive a boat in Florida , but someone operating a vessel with over 10 horsepower is supposed to pass a boating safety course.

That afternoon, the boys set off on the Tampa Bay waters, first dropping off another person and then continuing on, according to the suit.

The lawsuit says the teen was under the influence of alcohol and looking at his phone to change the music, rather than focusing, as he drove the boat at a top speed of about 43.5 miles per hour.

Then the boat smashed into a dock, throwing both boys into the bay, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Moorefield was underwater until a good Samaritan and an officer with the St. Petersburg Police Department found him, according to his family and the FWC. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died of blunt force trauma and drowning, his family said.

The other teen was also taken to a hospital, according to the FWC.

“We would like to express our condolences to the Moorefield family and ask that the public give the family space during this difficult time,” said Major Evan Laskowski, the FWC’s Southwest Regional Commander, at the time of the incident. “As a father myself, I can only begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing right now. I want them to know we are thinking and praying for them during this time.”

The Moorefields are suing the other teen, who is now 16, on one count of negligence. They’re suing his parents on one count each of negligent entrustment.

The court issued a subpoena for the teen boat driver’s medical records following the incident, but his family objected, Pinellas County records show.

The investigation is ongoing.

In 2023, 59 people died in boating accidents in Florida, according to the FWC.

Enormous MSC Cruise Ship Crashes Into Crowded Venice Port, Injuring at Least Five

By Caleb Jacobs

Posted on Jun 3, 2019 11:35 AM EDT

A commercial cruise ship suffered a catastrophic engine failure off the coast of Venice, Italy on Sunday, leaving it uncontrollable as it headed toward a nearby dock. With no effective way of steering the vessel, it resultantly crashed into the harbor—a hotspot for tourists—injuring five people, according to the Associated Press.

The news has made headlines worldwide with videos of the incident also being posted online, showing the situation from a firsthand perspective:

Operated by MSC, the Opera cruise ship was built to hold more than 2,675 passengers and, in this instance, it was carrying travelers back to Venice after visiting Kotor, Montenegro as well as the Greek cities of Mykonos, Santorini, and Corfu. Two nearby tugboats worked to guide the ship away from the dock after the captain immediately reported the engine failure but failed.

As can be heard in the videos, those aboard the ship and on shore were left wondering aloud what might come of the shipwreck.

While there are obvious and immediate effects that come with a crash of this magnitude, Italian activists are using the episode to make a political point. Recently, there’s been a swing of protest regarding Venice’s acceptance of cruise ships that, due to their size , block narrow waterways and obstruct tourist views. This was not lost on Twitter after Sunday’s happenings as Italy’s environment minister Sergio Costa posted:

“What happened in the port of Venice is confirmation of what we have been saying for some time. Cruise ships must not sail down the Giudecca. We have been working on moving them for months now … and are nearing a solution.”

A politician with the Italian Left party, Nicola Fratoianni, even went as far as to call cruise ships “steel monsters” which “risk carnage” in the seaside town.

An MSC spokesperson explained to NPR   that the cruise ship is now being moored at the Marittima terminal and has begun passenger operations.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s Boat Crash Was Worse Than It Looked in All Those Clips

Portrait of Justin Curto

The collision between Gary and Daisy during the Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew ’s day off had nothing on what was to come. May 10’s episode finally brought the boat crash that Below Deck Sailing Yacht had been teasing since before the season started, and somehow, it was even worse than it seemed in all those clips. The problems began on a particularly windy morning, hours before the crew needed to pick up guests for their next charter. Soon after deckhand Sydney Zaruba noticed the wind was turning the boat, the stern started scraping against the dock. To get away, the crew had to unplug the yacht from shore power on the dock — which became a problem of its own once the boat was away from the dock, but unable to move in the wind. With chief engineer Colin Macrae off the boat on some chief-engineer business, first mate Gary King had to figure out Parsifal III ’s generator system to get the yacht power. But their worries didn’t end once Gary got power to the boat — the deck crew then had to get the anchors up after they’d been dragging. And you thought sailing was stressful!

After the yacht got safely away from the dock, the crew surveyed the boat’s scratches. “It could’ve been a lot more serious damage,” Captain Glenn Shepard said in a confessional. “Like a season-ending kind of damage.” “Someone could lose their life in a situation like this,” reflected deckhand Jean-Luc Cerza-Lanaux. And once Colin got back on board, he added that “it would’ve been a totally different situation” if Gary hadn’t been able to turn on the generator. “I think Gary saved our ass.”

As it turned out, though, the crew wasn’t out of the woods. When they headed back to the dock to pick up guests, they ran into more issues with the strong winds. “Here we go again, with the wind blowing us into the dock,” Gary said in a confessional. “We literally cannot catch a break.” As the crew began docking the boat, Parsifal III ’s bow thrusters stopped working in the wind — sending the boat right into the dock for a second time, in the even-worse crash that we saw in the season’s trailer.

Will this one be the “season-ending kind of damage” Captain Glenn talked about? While the episode closes on a particularly stressful “To be continued …” Glenn shared on a pre-season Reddit AMA that it still “could have been a lot worse. “A repair like that would probably run $10k-$20k,” he wrote, adding that the boat already needed to be repainted. “That is always covered by insurance,” he added. “The boats are well insured.”

Go’s captain discusses St. Maarten collision

Captain simon johnson has spoken to local media about the moments leading up to the incident….

Image for article Go’s captain discusses St. Maarten collision

Following the  collision of 77m motoryacht  Go  into a dock in St. Maarten on Wednesday 24 February, 2021, the yacht’s captain has spoken exclusively to The Daily Herald to set the record straight and describe the moments prior to the yacht’s sudden control malfunction during the crucial minutes of the line-up procedure to exit Simpson Bay Lagoon.

According to the report, the yacht’s software failed Captain Simon Johnson at the worst possible moment, leading to his choosing a deliberate impact with the St. Maarten Yacht Club wooden dock to avoid a worse scenario. A second run-in to the dock was then said to be caused by, yet again, a computer miscommunication between the bridge and engine room in a bid to regain control.

“Johnson confirmed that the yacht’s insurance assessors are progressing well in their survey of all the damage sustained to the boat, which is minimal, and the dock, and are engaged to set things right,” The Daily Herald reports. “The root causes of the malfunction have not yet been definitively identified and an intensive investigation is underway while the yacht remains at Ile de Sol Marina.”

Captain Johnson told the newspaper about the moments leading up to the incident; “We left the dock an hour before and went through all the checks. There was nothing different from the other times we’ve done this exit… Then, when we were about 50 metres away and holding position, the yacht started moving mysteriously forward. There was nothing I seemed to be able to do; all the controls on the bridge were showing normal. I called the engine room and everything was normal down there.”

With extremely limited control and the yacht approaching the bridge, Johnson said he had to think fast, deciding that the preferred option was to point the bow towards the yacht club dock and beach her gently there, with a crewmember up front to ensure everyone was out of the way.

Johnson added that he is troubled by the incident; “The fact that there were no warning alarms, no lights on board to indicate something was wrong was really scary. I know this yacht so well, yet I had 13 seconds to make a decision before hitting the bridge. The decision I made was one I would make again if faced with the same circumstances.”

He also criticised modern electronics as getting “ridiculously over the top”, with no manual overrides or back-ups if something goes wrong. “Questions have to be asked in this industry about what’s going on; who is building these boats, who is designing them, who is supervising them, and why we aren’t being asked what we (captains) need to operate them,” he said.

CRUISE company MSC Cruises is investigating why one of its ships “deviated from her course” and ended up tearing apart a dock in Honduras on Tuesday morning.

The MSC Armonia , which is in the middle of a weeks-long cruise to the Caribbean, was heading into Port Coxen Hole on the island of Roatán when it failed to slow to a stop and crashed into the dock before running aground on the beach, NPR and Fox News reported.

Footage of the incident shared by YouTube user gCaptain shows witnesses looking on in shock as the MSC Armonia tears into the pier — along with the sounds of the structure crunching under the weight of the 59,000-tonne ship.

One of the men heard in the video repeatedly yells for others to “get out of the kitchen” of a nearby restaurant, according to USA Today .

Onlookers screamed as the ship missed its stop and kept going. Picture: gCaptain

“While manoeuvring alongside, for reasons that are currently still being duly investigated, the ship deviated from her course and grazed the end of the pier,” a spokesman for the cruise line said in an emailed statement to Fox News.

“There was never any risk for guests or crew on board,” added MSC. “There was also no impact for the environment.”

Crew members attempted to slow the ship upon realising it was travelling too fast into port, according to NPR, reportedly by throwing two anchors overboard just before the ship hit the dock.

But while the anchors may have been deployed too late to slow the vessel’s entry into port, damage to the MSC Armonia itself was said to be minimal.

“As to the ship, the damage was minor,” MSC stated. “She has also since been cleared by Honduran Port State Control authorities to continue her journey as soon as the necessary repairs are concluded.

“At the present time, ship personnel and external experts are still at work to complete such repairs.”

MSC’s statement further confirmed that passengers were not affected by the incident, and that the MSC Armonia has already left for its next port of call in Belize on Wednesday morning.

The MSC Armonia’s accident came days after a cargo ship crashed into a historic mansion on Istanbul’s Bosphorus strait , severely damaging the building.

Videos showed the large ship sailing straight towards the Asian side of Istanbul, hitting the red seaside mansion of Hekimbasi Salih Efendi, after a malfunction disabled its rudder.
