Yacht Club Monaco

Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by HSH Prince Sovereign Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco brings together more than 2.500 members from 80 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position on the international yachting scene.

Inauguration of the new YCM building

At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.

“ Allow me to express a very sincere wish that the Yacht Club de Monaco fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests ”

— Prince Rainier III

To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment. The Yacht Club de Monaco’s philosophy is based on the need to perpetuate but also to pass on a heritage, inherited from our ancestors, to ensure that the Yacht Club remains a lively and progressive place.

Take a tour of prince albert of monaco's yacht.

One of the best stories of this season was the rise of plucky Monaco, a squad laden with exciting young talent that won Ligue 1 and made it to the Champions League semifinals. One story that was overlooked regarding Monaco is that Prince Albert of Monaco, whose family owns part of AS Monaco Football Club, has an exceptionally nice boat.

Prince Albert's boat is named the Koning Albert II, because when you are the billionaire Prince of Monaco you get to name luxury oceangoing vessels after yourself, it's just what you do. Let's take a look around.

0:00 The video opens with a wide shot, wide enough for you to relize that this boat is really, truly large. You, a commoner, will never be on a boat this big unless you are in the Navy or go on cruises as vacations. (Note: do not go on cruises for vacations. Do something interesting instead. Please. Unless you're using the cruise to see a bunch of different places in a short amount of time. That's what I did when I went on a cruise. I had to qualify my original statement about all cruises being bad because I went on a cruise once and I am great and never make bad decisions.)

It's just a big damn boat. I wish I had one and you do too.

0:06 The second shot is looking down on the pool. The boat, which is built to travel on water, has a feature in which you can play in water and remain on the boat. You don't have to go into the outside water. You can stay safely on the boat and still be in water. Please note the pool can be converted into a helicopter pad. If you were wondering what a billion dollars can buy you, it's that. Near the pool is a full bar, lounging space for six people to lounge comfortably in and two staircases.

0:12 The pool shot is followed by another wide shot in case you forgot how goddamn big this boat is.

0:15 This wide shot is followed by another wide shot, for even more emphasis, set in water so turquoise it cannot possibly be real.

(Prince Albert of Monaco has enough money that he could pay for them to dye the sea the perfect shad of turquoise just for that photo. Do not put that past him.)

0:20 There are two balconies overlooking the pool. The first is bigger than my apartment and the second has a hot tub.

0:25 The view from said balconies is obviously spectacular.

0:31 See? I told you the pool turns into a helicopter pad.

0:35 The walkways on the outside edges of Prince Albert of Monaco's yacht are tastefully-appointed and modern. Duh.

0:40 That's not the hot tub on the balcony overlooking the pool. That's a different hot tub.

0:45 This is a boat and as such it contains many nautical instruments.

0:50 Gangplanks are for poor people.

0:55 How is Prince Albert of Monaco not just absolutely wasted on champagne and fruity island drinks all the time? Maybe he is, but he's really good at hiding it in public and none of his servants want to talk about it.

1:00 Y'all it has a garage.

1:05 Seriously though.

1:10 I mean, come on.

1:15 From what I can tell, this boat has upwards of 20 places with the sole purpose of comfortably lounging. Which, luxury yacht, so I guess that makes sense.

1:20 A classy dining room, just in case any other princes happen to wander by.

1:25 This just looks like a normal living room. I am confused.

1:30 That looks like either a fish tank or an elevator shaft and I'm real curious to find out which one.

1:35 Never mind I have been distracted by the grand piano with what appear to be flame decals on it.

1:40 Another classy dining room. In case one needs to host two different classy meals at two different locations within the yacht.

1:45 Salmon is not really what we were expecting from the bedroom but whatever floats your boat, buddy.

Oh god I am so sorry for the "whatever floats your boat" thing. Please forgive me.

1:50 Just a bigger version of a hotel bathroom, really.

1:55 Twin beds? What is this, a youth hostel?

2:00 Industrial kitchen, yes, of course, moving on.

2:05 That must be the servants' quarters or something.

2:10 Definitely servants' quarters. I doubt Prince Albert of Monaco has ever even been in that room.

2:15 The bridge, you've seen movies.

2:20 Important technical boat stuff happens here. More photos of the pool/helicopter pad, please.

2:25 That is not the pool or even anywhere near it. That is a picture of some stairs you could find on any old boat. Come on guys I need glitz! Glamour! Elegance! Placate me!

2:30 Oh, cool, toolboxes. Thanks guys. Really what I was looking for.

2:35 Valves, awesome.

2:40 Different Angle on the valves. This is no way to end a tour. I am so sorry.

Cannes: Prince Albert Celebrates New $80M+ Superyacht That Isn't Only About Indulgence

Among the luxury party palaces dotting the waters off Cannes during the festival this year will float one slightly more virtuous vessel: the yellow-funneled, 250-foot motor yacht Yersin , which was blessed in the presence of Prince Albert II of Monaco in June. The world’s most efficient, clean and advanced ICE Class explorer superyacht (ICE designates serious ice-going vessels) was conceived and built for scientific research projects — while offering key comforts of more leisure-focused crafts — with the support of the likes of Prince Albert’s foundation (luxury watchmaker Blancpain also is a partner). Yersin likely will be the scene of a few fest shindigs in Cannes, but its future holds more excursions like the one Albert’s wife, Princess Charlene, hosted in June, with 11 schoolchildren from Nice observing dolphins off the coast of Monaco.

“There is a trend toward more interesting yachts, offering the potential for fuel-efficient, long-range cruising and self-sufficiency,” says Peter Wilson of Marine Construction Management in Newport, R.I., which has overseen 75 superyacht builds. “Foundations operating expedition and research projects have become a fascinating area of expansion.”

Yersin’s wheelhouse features a print of the Belgian cartoon adventurer Tintin , a childhood hero of Fiat’s.

Yersin’s owner, French entrepreneur Francois Fiat (he and wife Genevieve Baud, a grocery and retail heiress, are involved in environmental causes), planned the craft with a focus on adventure, science and education. Named for Alexandre Emile Jean Yersin , who discovered the pathogen that caused the bubonic plague in 1894, it was built over 36 months in France’s Piriou Shipyard (in collaboration with Pierre Jacques Kubis Naval Design), where until March Jacques Cousteau’s Calypso was docked. Yersin carries enough diving and lab equipment for a National Geographic expedition and has a library stocked with Cousteau’s films.

The master suite, along with another double close by, is situated one level above the main deck (where the remaining six cabins are located) and has two private recessed decks flanking it. Also on board: two gymnasiums, a massage room, hair salon and hammam . A glass sculpture in the main deck saloon portrays Prince Albert II on one side and his great-great-grandfather Prince Albert I, who inaugurated Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum, on the other. A pair of 25-foot military-grade, bullet-proof Zodiac rigid inflatable Hurricanes shadow the boat at anchor — they can be used to bring guests aboard or for expeditions. Yersin also has a more refined tender — a 37-foot Wajer Osprey launch — and several toys, including kayaks and an all-terrain quad bike, available for recreation and exploration.

The intimate upper-deck theater has 15 plush seats.

Yersin features electric propulsion through Azimuth thrusters powered by generators. At a cruising speed of 11 knots, it uses only 100 gallons of diesel per hour, about half what a conventional diesel yacht would guzzle. At a slow steaming speed of 9 knots, this drops to 47 gallons per hour, allowing 40 days at sea with 40 people on board, including crew. It’s available for charter, but only with a background check and a detailed research proposal; rates will vary according to the project but at a minimum will cover running costs (about $23,000 a day), with sponsorship opportunities available for scientific expeditions.

Whoever boards Yersin can enjoy large TV monitors in luxurious lounging areas as well as a 15-seat cinema. A 1,400-square-foot multipurpose platform can accommodate a reception marquee, suspended by a crane, and serve as a dance floor. If it all gets too exciting, there’s a well-equipped hospital room below decks. Gin and tonic, anybody? Just don’t throw the lime overboard — the vessel was designed “to make an impression but not leave a trace” in the ocean.

Prince Albert launches BioDivMed mission from Monaco Yacht Club

The Monaco Yacht Club has hosted the launch of the first synchronised and standardised scientific census of marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea. The ‘BioDivMed’ mission was inaugurated in the presence of HSH Prince Albert, and set off for Carnon, Hérault, in its second consecutive year. The mission aims to collect data on fish, crustacean, and mammal species to enhance the understanding of life below the sea’s surface.

In its initial phase last year, the BioDivMed mission identified 267 species of fish along over 2,000 kilometres of coastline. This year, the current mission aims to build on this success and continue expanding knowledge of Mediterranean marine biodiversity. The OceanoScientific team will gather DNA samples from approximately twenty sentinel sites to map the Mediterranean seabed, under the direction of Professor David Mouillot.

Leading this oceanographic campaign is the Marbec Joint Research Unit from the University of Montpellier in collaboration with Spygen, the Center for Functional & Evolutionary Ecology, philanthropic associations, We are Méditerranée, Andromède Océanologie and OceanoScientific.

By Editorial Team   26 June 2014

On the 20th June the striking new building for the world-renowned Yacht Club de Monaco was officially opened in befitting grand style by HSH Prince Albert II.

A gathering of more than 3,000 guests were invited to celebrate the occasion with a lavish opening ceremony party and tour of the brand new premises which forms the centrepiece of Monaco’s remodelled harbour. Amongst the VIP’s were a number of superyacht Owner’s including Eddie Jordan who had his 47m/155’ charter yacht BLUSH delivered to him earlier this year, as well as yachting industry dignitaries such as Peter Lürssen, Nick Edmiston and Espen Øino.

Also in attendance was the talented architect for the new Yacht Club de Monaco, Lord Norman Foster who has created not only a building of aesthetic beauty but also one that sets high standards for sustainable design. Nodding to its fine sailing heritage, the clubhouse features large, deck-like terraces that offer sweeping views over the harbour and sea while being powered by renewable energy.

During the ceremony Lord Foster commented on his design for this iconic Yacht Club: “The building is a little like a city in microcosm, with schools, parks, offices, restaurants, a network of interior circulation ‘streets’ and a hierarchy of public and private, social and functional spaces. It is a continuation of Monaco’s dense urban fabric, as well as the Yacht Club’s traditions and will be an important part of civic life.”

The Yacht Club of Monaco celebrates 70 fabulous years

yacht du prince albert de monaco

Prince Albert II was among friends and compatriots for the 70 th anniversary celebrations of the Yacht Club de Monaco, of which he has served as president since 1984.

The ceremony on Saturday 24 th June was attended by 1,500 people who gathered on the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM)’s quay to celebrate 70 years of the club created by Prince Rainier III, who was convinced that “the future of Monaco lies with the sea”.

On Saturday, it was his son, Prince Albert II, president for close to 40 years, who honoured what the YCM has become.

“The Yacht Club de Monaco has been able to preserve and pass on the traditions linked to life at sea while promoting innovation and the development of yachting,” said the Prince.

Achievements under the presidency of Prince Albert II

Under Prince Albert’s presidency, the Yacht Club de Monaco has organised a multitude of world-renowned events, including Monaco Classic Week, a biennial event that echoes the first motorboat meetings of 1904 and is the only event of its kind that brings together beautiful traditional sailing boats with vintage motoryachts and old motorboats.

The club has also created the La Belle Classe label to unite owners around the essential values of respect for etiquette, protecting the environment, preserving maritime heritage and encouraging innovation in the superyacht sector.

The capital of luxury yachting

In 2014, the YCM turned a new page in its history with the opening of a new clubhouse designed by Lord Foster. The arrival of this spectacular building led to the creation of the ‘Yachting Monaco’ cluster, aimed at reaffirming the Principality’s position as the capital of luxury yachting.

During Saturday’s celebrations, Prince Albert spoke about how the YCM serves as a reflection of his father’s passion for the sea. “His vision was to make the YCM an exclusive place where yachting is experienced, appreciated and celebrated, thus contributing to the promotion of Monaco as a destination.”

Setting the pace in sustainable yachting

Prince Albert also highlighted the fact that the protection of the oceans remains one of the Yacht Club’s main priorities, and how the environmental transition played by the club and its marina has over the years made them demonstrators of new eco-responsible solutions.

“I want to make environmental issues a priority and we must continue to be a beacon for the nautical industry,” he said. “The mobilisation must be common and total.”

The Yacht Club’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the activities that fall under the aegis of the ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting’, starting with the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge from 3 rd to 8 th July 2023, now in its 10th edition. More than 500 young engineers representing 25 nations and 25 universities will meet industry professionals including key players such as Oceanco, Ferretti, Sanlorenzo, Lürssen, Monaco Marine and Palumbo SY Refit.

This will be followed by the 3rd Monaco Smart and Sustainable Marina Rendezvous on 24th and 25th September, with the aim of presenting innovative solutions for the development of sustainable marinas.

A tribute to Prince Rainier III

As part of the 70 th anniversary celebrations, as well as the centenary events marking the birth of Prince Rainier III, Prince Albert inaugurated a photographic exhibition at the YCM titled ‘Prince Rainier III, a sailor above all’.

The evening also provided an opportunity to officially welcome some 30 new members and to unveil the highlights of this anniversary year.

yacht du prince albert de monaco

Saturday 11 th September 2021. Monaco Classic Week is not just a regatta. It’s a voyage through time and the history of yachting which in Monaco combines sport and a certain ‘Art de Vivre’ common to classic sailing yachts, period motor-yachts and vintage motorboats at a time which saw the birth of aviation and the early seaplanes. It is this spirit that never fails to captivate participants and public alike at an event orchestrated by Yacht Club de Monaco. It combines races as a way to showcase the authenticity of sailing yachts along with the coveted La Belle Classe Restoration Prize, living well at sea with the Chefs Competition, respect for etiquette at sea with the elegance contests, and an extraordinary voyage into the past at the ‘Powerboat Meetings in the Albert I of Monaco era – Yacht Club de Monaco’s collection restored’ exhibition. On the last day, a Grand Parade led by SS Delphine (1921) brought all participants together in front of the Oceanographic Museum for a parade of living maritime heritage in all its many guises to Larvotto Beach and back to the YCM Marina. An opportunity to celebrate the 100 th anniversary of this steam-yacht, the last still in operation, recognisable by her inverted stem and elegant lines (78.5m in length, 10.83m beam) with three boilers supplying the original 1500hp quadruple-expansion engines.

Style as much as performance

yacht du prince albert de monaco

After the rigours of Friday’s race to Cala del Forte marina in Ventimiglia and back, Saturday was about what inspires the yachting soul, this passion that people have for their boat and the way they enjoy them at shore and at sea. The Elegance Contest again involved Princess Beatriz de Orleans-Borbon and an elitist jury called into judge the style, class and harmony of crews and their boats. Sailing yachts, motorboats and motor-yachts paraded past the jury on Lucciana Jetty, the crews digging deep into their imaginations to harmonise their uniforms and gestures to suit their boat’s stature. Salutes, hurrahs, canon shots, even sea chanties proved a challenge for a jury embarrassed by choice when the final decision had to be made.

A hand-picked fleet

yacht du prince albert de monaco

On the Mediterranean classic yacht circuit, Monaco Classic Week stands out as the only one to bring together an exclusive range of classic sailing and motor yachts, selected and invited by the Yacht Club de Monaco. For owners, delighted to be together and sharing their passion, it was a more intimate format with only sailing yachts built before 1950 with a wooden mast being able to drop anchor in the YCM Marina.

Around 30 responded to the invitation, most of them Fifes, including three of the 15M IR yachts. It was an ideal opportunity for Moët Hennessy to pay tribute to the prestigious Scottish boatyard by officially launching a 25-year-aged Glenmorangie Tuiga Whisky. In their wake, were a dozen period motor-yachts and some 30 vintage motorboats including ten Rivas, outdoing each other in finesse and elegance while seven others, including three American Chris Crafts vied for supremacy in the sheer elegance of their lines.

Mariella (Fife 1938) wins Monaco Classic Week Trophy 2021

The La Belle Classe Restoration Prize recognises the quality of the restoration of boats that are often over a hundred years old. For this fifth edition, the Jury chaired by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and comprising experts in yachting history including Dr William Collier has spent the week inspecting all the boats. The scoring takes into account respect for the original plans, materials used in the construction and the expertise of those involved in restoring them. The boat’s history and that of their owners are all part of the passion and commitment which also comes into play. It is a combination of this contest and the elegance contest that decides the winner of the Monaco Classic Week Trophy as they encompass all the criteria assessed in these two aspects to which is added that indefinable “love at first sight” reaction to the spirit that reigns in the life, maintenance and restoration of the boat. The big winner this week is the Fife-design Bermudan yawl Mariella (1938) of Carlo Falcone who succeeds the gaff schooner Puritan (1930). Also on the receiving end of awards for the quality of their restoration are Iran in the vintage motorboats, Blue Bird 1938 in the motor-yachts and the gaff cutter Olympian (Gardner 1913). Iran (Stempler Corsier Port – 1948) won the jury’s vote for the elegance prize, as did the motor yacht Istros and the sailing yacht Viola (Fife 1908).

Three races for the 12’ Dinghies

In a light south-westerly the Race Committee ran three windward-leeward races in quick succession for the 12’ Dinghies. “ A day of light airs that favoured the light sailors !” explained Lorient sailor, Christophe Le Bruchec. “ The Italians proved very strong competition, ” he said, confirmed by the ranking dominated by Aldo Samele-Acquaviva, ahead of compatriots Alessandro Pedone and Federico Pelopais.

Chefs Competition won by Eileen 1938

yacht du prince albert de monaco

Ten boats, sailing and motor, entered their chefs for the highly-rated Chefs Competition, the jury chaired by three-Michelin star Mauro Colagreco (Mirazur). Coordinated by Simon Ganache, Executive Chef of Banquets at YCM, the theme was ‘Land and Sea’, with Wagyu beef and king crab for the starter, and black cod, carabineros and octopus for the main dish. Another ingredient they had to work in to enhance their recipes was Glenmorangie’s ‘The Original’ 10-year-old whisky which they did with panache. The winner was Thibaud Barbafiera the “cook” on the Bermudan cutter Eileen 1938 (Anker 1938) who best combined these culinary imperatives and impressed the jury. He beat Ricco Dubignon from the motor-yacht Le Kir Royal and Conor Demprey from Blue Bird 1938 .

Success for outstanding exhibition of works from the YCM collection

yacht du prince albert de monaco

To commemorate the 100 th anniversary of the death of Prince Albert I, the Comité Albert Ier-2022 put on an exhibition for the week of some 60 items that have been restored and are on public display for the first time, including medals and trophies, relating to the powerboat meetings held in Monaco in the early 20 th century. All the items will now be found a place in the various lounges of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

They said:

Bernard d’alessandri, general secretary of the yacht club de monaco.

“As the curtain falls on this 15 th edition of Monaco Classic Week, we are all feeling very emotional at having shared our passion for all these boats. This event is unique but also has meaning as it brings together people who have the same concept of sailing and pay the same attention to preserving maritime heritage. We can see that old boats still have a timeless elegance. Monaco also had a role to play in the early days and development of aviation in the early 20th century. For aviation started with seaplanes and the first flights over Monaco waters taking off from the quays. The exhibition of posters and lithographs from the Yacht Club is a reflection of what yachting is today. When we talk about Monaco as a capital of yachting, it is a story that began a long time ago and which continues.”

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, President of the Monaco Classic Week Grand Jury

“ We were given a wonderful welcome by all the crews who told us the story of their boat, the restoration works that have been carried out, and always with the same passion and love. In the end, it’s a very difficult decision to make, so many craftsmen who work on these boats to preserve them in all their original grandeur have done a great job. In the end, it’s the heart that decides for each member of the jury.”

Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Home Environment Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Established by Prince Rainier III in 1953, the Yacht Club de Monaco is the emblem of Monegasque yachting. Since 2014, it has had its own emblematic building, a striking piece of architecture by Britain’s Norman Foster.

With its sleek lines and architecture reminiscent of an ocean liner, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s headquarters building never fails to provoke a reaction. Officially unveiled in 2014, it was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Norman Foster.

“This building has been designed like a miniature city, integrated into the existing urban landscape of Monaco,” explains the architect, who was also behind the Millennium Bridge (2000), Millau Viaduct (2004), Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona (2007) and Vieux Port in Marseille (2013).

Chaired since 1984 by Prince Albert II , the Yacht Club de Monaco, with its 2,000 members representing 60 nationalities and prestigious yachts , illustrates Monaco’s historic role in the world of yachting .

The first regattas organised in the Principality date back to 1862, while the first international motorboat races – which arrived with the development of the first combustion engines – were contested in Port Hercule in 1904.

Today, the Yacht Club de Monaco organises a number of regattas, such as Monaco Classic Week, the Primo Cup and, more recently, the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge One.

“As part of our ‘Monaco, capital of yachting’ project, through this event the Principality helps to bring together manufacturers, engineers, shipyards, students and ship owners to share their experiences and respond to the energy and environmental challenges facing the nautical sector,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The YCM has two influential ambassadors: Le Tuiga, considered by sailor Eric Tabarly to be “one of the most beautiful yachts in the world”, takes part in major classic yacht events, while the Seaexplorer (formerly Malizia II) , the eco-friendly vessel that took Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic in summer 2019 to attend the UN Climate Summit, finished fifth in the Vendée Globe 2020, the first time it has taken part in the race.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Yacht Club de Monaco

Yacht Club de Monaco

Founded by Prince Rainier III in 1953 and presided by HSH Prince Albert II since 1984, Yacht Club de Monaco is an exclusive private club which unites 2,500 members from 79 nationalities. In accordance with its statutes, this private club differs from others in that it also has a public service remit. Not only does it play a key role in bringing life to the harbour, and as a catalyst for all yachting-related activities in Monaco, YCM contributes to promoting the Principality and its influence abroad. At the instigation of its President, HSH Prince Albert II, it pursues a dynamic environmental policy, which includes the SEA Index, a benchmark for 40+m yachts to measure the CO2 emissions of their propulsion systems and generators.

While the Club remains very attached to safeguarding maritime heritage through exceptional events like Monaco Classic Week – La Belle Classe (8-12 September 2021), YCM also has eyes to the future with meetings like the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (6-10 July 2021) which puts the spotlight on clean alternative propulsion systems to build the future of yachting.

In Love with the Sea: Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Monaco’s unequivocal love for the Mediterranean has made it synonymous with yachting. With access to dozens of countries, cultures and histories at its doorstep, the Yacht Club de Monaco is a lasting and proud symbol of adventure, affluence, limitless possibility and the passionate bond forged between a sailer and the glittering depths of the open water. This year, the YCM is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a grand program of events which are within the frame of Monaco, Capital of  Advanced  Yachting approach, sure to make any wandering yachtsman or woman want to drop anchor in Port Hercules and enjoy the festivities.

Port constructed by ancient mythical hero… Hercules!

Port Hercules is one of the only deep-water ports along the entire French Riviera. Ancient Greeks and Romans used the port in 600BC. At the time, the port was dotted with altars to the mythical hero and demigod, Hercules. Texts by Roman Emperor Julian stated that Hercules himself constructed Monaco’s port and coastal road.

Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Monaco starts to become the epicentre of yachting over 160 years ago…

Because Prince Charles III wanted Monaco to be renowned for both yachting and innovation, he inspired the Principality’s first regattas in 1862. His son, Prince Albert I, inherited a passion for the sea and became a renowned navigator, explorer and pioneer of oceanography. In 1904, when road races were banned because they were deemed too dangerous, SBM launched the “Exhibition and International Motorboat Meeting”. Leading car manufacturers flocked to Monaco to test their new engines on water. Monaco was starting to become the centre of the boating world.

In 1953, Prince Rainier III, who was known for his passion for bringing people together, looked beyond the sporting aspect of yachting and established the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Prince saw the Club as a way to create friendships and bonds between people who love the sea through a rich variety of social events. Prince Rainier III immediately agreed to become the YCM’s president and, one year later, the Club began organizing meetings and international events, as well as scuba-diving and fishing adventures. All these events resulted in a 50% increase in boats frequenting Monaco’s harbour.

The next generations of sailors began getting formal training when the YCM set up its Sailing School inaugurated in 1970. Two years later, the Builder Prince encouraged boat-making genius Carlo Riva (who created the iconic mahogany Monte-Carlo Offshorer yachts) to build the first dry port.

The Yacht Club’s hi-tech Home

With the goal of sheltering the port from strong easterly winds, Prince Rainier III launched several studies in the 1970s, which culminated in a colossal, semi-floating harbour wall. Completed in 2002, the wall is 350 metres long, weighs 160,000 tonnes and has been praised for its inventive design. The project was completed with a breakwater, which formed the marina in front of Quai Louis II, now home to the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new clubhouse.

Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Completed in 2014, the hi-tech building looks like a liner docked on the Quai. The Club boasts 5,000 m 2 of interior space and 4,000 m 2 of terraces. The emblematic building was sustainably designed with solar panels, a sea water cooling system and uses natural light and ventilation. Domestic materials such as European oak were used for the terraces and recycled materials were used for the foundations. Local companies were employed for its construction. The building demonstrates the YCM’s profound commitment to the planet.

HSH Prince Albert II continued the work begun by his father by spearheading redevelopments which continue to make Port Hercules the most modern and practical marina on the Mediterranean, positioning Monaco as the Capital of Yachting. In 1984, Prince Albert II was appointed as President of the Yacht Club by his father. The first year of his presidency saw the launch of the Primo Cup and the Monaco-New York transatlantic race. The Monaco Classic Week — La Belle Classe was created in 1994.

The YCM’s La Belle Classe Academy is dedicated to anyone involved in yachting, from captains and crew members to future owners. Opened in 2015, expert teachers in state-of-the-art facilities teach students about everything from basic safety training and navigation to pleasure boating and sustainability.

How to become a member of the Yacht Club

“To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment,” — YCM.

The Yacht Club de Monaco currently has over 2,500 members from 81 nationalities who all share a passion for the sea. To become a member, one needs to be introduced by two sponsors, who are both YCM society members. (Anyone who has been a society member for more than one year may propose one applicant per session.) Twice a year, Prince Albert II convenes a meeting of the Admissions Committee to examine all applications. New members are officially welcomed to the YCM with a cocktail party.

Members adhere to ten golden rules, which include: to promote the Yacht Club and the Principality at every occasion, to actively participate in the sporting and social life of the YCM, to respect the YCM dress code at all official events, to fly the YCM flag on one’s yacht and to invite other members who share a passion for yachting.

On International Women’s Day, the Yacht Club de Monaco announced the very first women-only regatta in Monaco, called ‘Woman Leading and Sailing’. A dozen crews each with five-women battled it out aboard their J/70s for the first Woman Leading and Sailing Trophy between 25–26 March 2023.

10th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and the first YCM E-Boat Rally (3–8 July)

What better way to celebrate the future of yachting than by investigating alternative energy sources? The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge brings young engineers from colleges and universities around the world into contact with yachting industry players. The goal is to get creative by designing alternative propulsion systems, with everyone sharing information on open source. The first ever YCM E-Boat Rally will be held during this year’s event. A record number of electric boats is expected in Monaco’s harbour.
