Why: Choose a Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

Mediterranean yacht charter vacations are always by far and away the most popular summer location. You can read hundreds of our client endorsements here . Think the French Riviera, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Sardinia, Spain and Greece. This is where most of the large crewed superyachts are concentrated and this is where also where you will find a huge variety of interesting places and cultures to experience. The Mediterranean (or Med’ for short) has everything. The area covers a large diversity of countries, cultures landscapes and experiences. Yet, the fantastic thing is that they are relatively close together, so you can create convenient and action packed itineraries very easily. On top of this, the yachting infrastructure in Europe is second to none so there are dozens of beautiful marinas filled with beautiful private superyachts and mega yachts that can be chartered as well as all the shops, restaurants, bars and conveniences that you could need. Because of its popularity the Mediterranean has an incredible choice of charter boats available to rent, both motor (power) yachts and sailing yachts, including the ever more widespread large luxury private superyacht charters.

How Much Does it Cost To Charter a Yacht in The Mediterranean?

Mediterranean yacht charter prices vary according to the size, style and age of the yacht. Our luxury superyacht charter yachts rent from 30,000 Euro to over 1,000,000 per week, plus expenses, in the form of an advanced provisioning allowance (APA). Conversely, smaller 'all inclusive' type vacations cost between Euro 15,000 to 50,000 per week. Here is the full list of all the charter yachts and here are the current Mediterranean yachts with special discounted prices .

Timing & Weather: The Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Mediterranean yachting season generally runs from April to the end of October. During the height of the season, in July and August, the climate is warm and sunny and the winds tend to be light. While this is the high season for all tourism, you can still easily avoid onshore tourists while afloat. The weather can also be good during the shoulder seasons.

Tip: Shoulder Season Means Value & Choice

Another good time to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons from April-May and September-October. These periods fall each side of the main summer season when the temperatures are still comfortable. September, for instance, is an underrated time of the year because the weather is usually good (if not too hot) but the sea is at its maximum temperature which is ideal for swimming. At this time there is greater choice of berths and anchorages for your boating vacation and the onshore tourists are not present in their largest numbers.

  • Interior crew who provide five-star guest services such as serving meals, drinks, cleaning and maintaining the interior, including staterooms, laundry, and more

There are incredible things to do and see throughout the Mediterranean. Please get in touch with us to discuss your luxury yacht charter dream. We will help you select the best destination and yacht for you and your group.

Motor Yachts

The Mediterranean is home to some of the world’s best motor yachts, many of which are called the Port of Athens home. Ranges from midsize yachts to superyachts and megayachts over 150 feet long. Charter guests on these yachts can enjoy sprawling sundecks , beach clubs , spas , and gyms . Some motor yachts even have elevators .

Entertaining spaces on nearly all motor yachts are ideal for gatherings inside and out, night or day. Dining choices are also varied, but of course, most guests opt to dine outdoors.

With the larger storage spaces inside and on the deck, motor yachts can accommodate many water toys and tenders. These agile tenders shuttle guests to shore and hard-to-reach places. They can also tow water skis , wakeboards , and more.

Gulets or Motor Sailers

Traditional gulets, or motor sailors, are available in Croatia , Greece , and Turkey . These large, unique vessels are perfect for bigger groups. Gulets also give a truly authentic East Mediterranean experience. While they have sails, they primarily utilize motor power to navigate the Mediterranean.

Anyone looking for more action and adventure can find it by chartering a catamaran or sailboat . Both sailing catamarans and power catamarans get you closer to the water.

These boats allow easy access to the water for snorkeling , sea-bobs , paddle boarding , and more. Spacious layouts for families make these boats even more attractive. What’s more, sailing catamarans save considerably on fuel costs.

Also, sailboats offer many comforts and amenities and the ability to participate in the journey. Sailing yachts like PANORAMA or AURELIUS are a great way to enjoy the Mediterranean. Take a sailing lesson from the Captain and crew and make lasting family memories.

There are countless destinations to consider when aboard your yacht cruise on the Mediterranean. And each comes with a unique potential for adventure. Here are just a few Mediterranean charter yacht routes to consider:

  • There is the unrestrained extravagance of the French Riviera . Think Cote d Azure, Saint Tropez, and Cannes Film Festival!

Chartering a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean can be a truly extravagant experience. You'll enjoy high-end amenities, exceptional service, and top-of-the-line features. These are but a taste of what makes Mediterranean luxury yacht charters special.

The cost of chartering a private luxury yacht can vary significantly. Factors for pricing include yacht size, brand, age, facilities, crew, time of year, and charter duration. Keep in mind that prices can fluctuate, and the following estimates are approximate:

  • Motor Yachts: Luxury motor yacht charters in the Mediterranean range from approximately $30,000 to over $1 million weekly. The starting price for a smaller luxury motor yacht (around 80 feet) might be around $30,000-$100,000 weekly. Mega yachts (over 200 feet) can cost several hundred thousand to over multiple million dollars weekly plus expenses.
  • Sailing Yachts: Sailing yachts in the Mediterranean usually start at around $20,000 per week for smaller 60-80 feet vessels. The price can increase to several hundred thousand dollars weekly for larger, high-end sailing yachts (over 150 feet).
  • Catamarans: The prices for smaller catamarans (50-60 feet) start at $20,000 to $30,000 per week. On the other hand, bigger, ultra-luxurious catamarans (over 75 feet) can cost $100,000 or more per week.

It's important to note that these prices are the base rates. Rates do not include additional expenses. These include fuel, food and beverages, marina fees, crew gratuities, water toys, and optional services.

Additionally, the time of year can affect prices. High seasons (July and August) typically command higher rates than shoulder or low seasons. Last-minute deals and advanced booking discounts may also be available.

Each route offers a distinct personality, flavor, and scenery. But all offer a taste of European luxury a Mediterranean yacht charter can offer. Here are some of our most popular routes:

Hit the beach

Stunning beaches are a highlight of the Mediterranean. From picturesque Positano to magical Mykonos , you have many breathtaking beaches . In addition, your private yacht charter gives you access to hidden beaches. Experience a taste of a sandy spot most people will never have the chance to see for themselves.

Enjoy Watersports

Hop from your Mediterranean charter yacht to something considerably nimbler. You can relax on the beach, windsurf , kitesurf , jet ski , kayak , and more. Scuba diving and snorkeling are great ways to explore sea life and shipwrecks below the surface.

Explore Historic Sites on Your Private Mediterranean Yacht Charter Vacation

Postiano, Italy - Mediterranean Yacht Charter

UNESCO World Heritage Sites include Cinque Terre (Italy), Amalfi Coast , Naples , and Pompeii . In addition, there are many sites in Athens and the Greek Islands , the Dalmatian Coast , and Plitvice Lakes ( Croatia ). Enjoy the rich culture that these popular destinations can offer.

Take-home gifts from the Mediterranean , including olive oil, wine, blown glass, leather, and textiles. Don't worry; many places will ship items directly back to your home for you as well.

Wine and Dine

The Mediterranean is a foodie's paradise . Besides upscale restaurants, there are delicious street foods in nearly every town. In addition, you're never far from a fantastic vineyard producing excellent local wines.

Soak in a Hot Spring

You'll find thermal springs throughout the Mediterranean in locations such as Santorini , Greece ; Ischia , Italy ; and Barcelona , Spain . The healing powers of these natural baths will relax and rejuvenate your mind and body.

A Mediterranean climate has dry summers and mild, wet winters. While summer is the busiest season, late spring and early fall make excellent Mediterranean yacht charter vacations.

In the off-season, rates are lower, and there are fewer crowds. The fall provides some respite from Greece's Meltemi winds that blow in July and August. The Mediterranean is a great yacht destination.

Mediterranean Cuisine includes olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, and whole grains. White and red meat are also part of the diet, just to a lesser extent. Enjoy delicious pasta in Italy , kebabs in Turkey, and spinach pie in Greece. The variety of options that the Mediterranean offers is incredible.

Eastern Mediterranean Cuisine

In Greece and Turkey, you can expect delectable food. This includes baklava, hummus, baba ghanoush with tahini sauce, yogurt, cucumber dips, and fried vegetables. Of course, grilled fish and seafood, vegetable stews, chicken with olives, and lamb kebabs are also main dishes every day.

Western Mediterranean Cuisine

Regarding Mediterranean cuisine, few places can compare to Italy and France. These countries have perfected the art of culinary excellence. They have a rich heritage in crafting the finest wines and olive oils.

Your private yacht chef will use the freshest local ingredients to create gourmet meals catered to your tastes. Of course, you can also enjoy a meal or aperitif onshore.

Now is the time to experience a yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Mediterranean sailing: where to cruise

  • Theo Stocker
  • October 22, 2021

Home to a hugely diverse cruising area, whether on your own boat or on a charter, there are literally dozens of options to consider when Mediterranean sailing, says Lu Heikell

Mediterranean sailing: where to cruise next season

Mediterranean Sailing: some of the best locations to cruise. Credit: Maxine Heath

With warm (sometimes too warm) air and sea temperatures the season in the Mediterranean runs much longer than in more northern European climes, writes Lu Heikell .

Here are a few of our favourite areas, writes Lu Heikell .

Mediterranean sailing: The Balearic Islands

Located 50 miles off the Valencian coast of Spain, the Balearic Islands comprise the four main islands of Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca, and several smaller islands including Cabrera and Espalmador.

Together they represent one of the most popular cruising areas of the Mediterranean.

Harbours , marinas and anchorages are dotted at convenient distances around the coast, allowing a mix of remote, secluded bays and cosmopolitan towns.

In high season it is undoubtedly busy, both on land and sea, but as well as forming stepping-stones while heading through the Mediterranean, they are well worth a visit if you have the opportunity.

Mediterranean sailing: Cabrera Caste overlooks tranquil Balearic anchorages

The inland towns and countryside are well worth exploring as a surprisingly tranquil place away from the crowded coastal areas.

Marina prices are always high but can be eye-watering in high season, but the Port de Baleares ports are well worth seeking out for more reasonable charges.

Charter yachts are widely available. Anchorages abound, so in the settled summer months there are plenty of options. Each island has its own ‘flavour’.

Lu Heikell is a leading pilot book author in the Mediterranean and has cruised there and back to the UK via the inland and offshore routes. Credit: Lu Heikell

Ibiza, the westernmost island, is known as the party island, and sadly much of the coast has been built up, leaving little genuinely untouched coast.

Formentera, and the adjoining island of Espalmador, are for the most part low-lying islands close south of Ibiza.

Its reputation is of a more laid-back relaxed vibe, and is comparatively undeveloped. In Puerto del Espalmador there is a good almost all-round sheltered anchorage.

Mallorca is the largest island, the cultural and political hub, and Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the region.

At 50 miles ENE from Ibiza, it can be reached in a long day sail. Bahia de Pollensa is a good jumping-off point for those heading to Menorca, and a decent spot to provision up if necessary.

Menorca, the easternmost island, is known for its rugged beauty, and in Mahon has one of the largest natural harbours in the region.

The detached pontoons here are perhaps the best value berths to be found in the summer months.

Tuscany & the Tuscan Islands

The Tuscany coast runs from Viareggio and Pisa down to Monte Argentario in the south. Offshore lie the main Tuscan islands of Capraia, Elba and Giglio.

The Tuscan archipelago is a popular cruising ground for yachts and the patchwork of islands between Corsica and the mainland provide conveniently spaced stepping stones.

The islands are covered by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, which has restricted areas on all the islands, and the islands of Gorgona, Pianosa and Montechristo are totally prohibited areas.

Capraia: once a prison, now a cruising haven

Capraia: once a prison, now a cruising haven. Credit: Lu Heikell

The Tuscan mainland offers little in the way of anchorages, but the major towns of Viareggio, Pisa and Livorno all offer visiting berths that shouldn’t break the bank, and fine bases to explore the renaissance city of Florence, the Etruscan coast and to experience the famous Viareggio autumn carnival.

And yes, I do have the picture of me ‘holding up’ the famous leaning tower!

Les Sables d'Olonne on the Atlantic Coast of France

Europe’s Atlantic coast: the best places to cruise

The Atlantic coast of Europe runs from Ushant to Gibraltar, and, with the Atlantic Islands thrown in, is a vast…

The islands are a natural escape, with more opportunities to anchor , though certainly fewer than around the Balearics. Capraia lies just 16 miles east of Cap Corse and is a former prison island.

Aside from yacht traffic there is little to disturb this largely tranquil place.

Elba is the major island, well known as the subject of the Napoleonic palindrome ‘Able was I ere I saw Elba’.

The coast is much indented and there are numerous attractive harbours and anchorages.

Portoferraio is the main harbour, built under the walls of the 16th century citadel and lined with handsome 18th century merchants’ houses.

Depending on the wind direction good shelter can be found on the north and south coast, while Porto Azzurro on the east coast is another picturesque gem.

Isola del Giglio and Isola Giannutri are the southernmost islands and the anchorages here can be busy, but remain a cooler option than the mainland in the heat of the summer.

Greece and Turkey

Greece and Turkey are undoubtably two of the most popular destinations for sailors in the Mediterranean.

Whether you decide to base your own boat here, or charter a yacht for a shorter visit, few fail to return to this sailing paradise.

Depending on your experience levels, or your inclination, each region offers something for everyone – the gentler winds of the Ionian, the remoteness of the Peloponnese, the boisterous breezes blasting through the Cyclades islands, cosmopolitan Istanbul, or the late summer warmth of the Dodecanese and the southern Turkish coast.

Turkey is not a Schengen country so UK sailors can take their time. Credit: Lu Heikell

You will find the stamp of history jostling with modern day life literally everywhere you go.

Our picks to escape the busiest spots in Greece would be the southern Peloponnese around Kalamata, northern Greece with Kavala, Thasos and Samothraki, and the Cyclades, Eastern Sporades and northern Dodecanese, using either Mitilini (Lesvos) or Lakki (Leros) as a base.

In Turkey, long-term berthing options are available at reasonable prices, and it has the benefit for UK visitors that stays here do not eat into your Schengen time allowance.

You can sail into the heart of the city in Istanbul, or explore the extensive natural anchorages between Bodrum and Finike on the south coast.

The Gulf of Gokova and the Gulf of Fethiye remain very unspoilt and hold some of our favourite anchorages.

Turkish food, Turkish hospitality and, of course, Turkish carpets are all legendary and will be found everywhere, though they say that the best carpets come from Milas, near Bodrum.

Mediterranean sailing: What you need to know

Mediterranean summers are generally warm, sometimes very hot, and settled.

Shoulder seasons are warmer than Atlantic coasts, with seasons extending the further south and east you go.

Sailing and swimming in southern Turkey in early November is not unusual.

Cruising hubs

One of the world’s top sailing destinations , the Mediterranean is the place to be to charter a luxury sailing yacht . Beautifully appointed luxury cruisers with state-of-the-art sailing systems allow you to have a classic Med sailing experience while delivering the best in comfort and amenities.

Although you’ll find incredible sailing and sailing yachts for hire throughout the region, the steady breezes of Sardinia, the French Riviera, Corsica, and the Balearic Islands make these some of the best locales for a luxury sailing charter. In these locations, you’ll find a wide range of luxury sailing super yachts , as well as exhilarating summertime sailing.

Mediterranean Yacht Charters: What to Do and See

The Mediterranean offers adventures to suit every yacht charter guest’s taste. From tours of ancient ruins and Old World churches to luxury shopping and the legendary casinos of Monaco, you’ll find it all.

Whether you plan to party all night in Ibiza, or you’d rather relax with a glass of wine in a historic city center, you’re in for a luxury travel experienc e unlike any other. What should you plan to do and see? Here are some of the reasons the Mediterranean is the world’s most popular destination for a luxury yacht charter :

History The body of water the Romans called “mare nostrum” (or “our sea”) is full of historical landmarks important to all of modern Western civilization, from the basilicas of Italy to the earliest churches and monasteries of France and Spain. It’s an architectural goldmine and an inspiration to those who visit. UNESCO World Heritage Sites dot the landscape, as do museums, galleries, and centuries-old historical markers. If you’re interested in art and culture, you’ll love it here.

Food It’s no secret that most of the cities, towns, and villages bordering the Mediterranean Sea are famous for their cuisines. And for foodies, the Mediterranean is a destination like no other. In every port of call, you’ll find a place serving to-die-for foods. From the Michelin-starred restaurants of Monaco to the seaside cafes in Cannes, charter guests are welcomed by great food wherever they go.

Luxury Shopping The Mediterranean is one of the world’s top fashion destinations, with France and Italy holding as much significance in the industry as New York City. Across the region, visitors can explore high-end designer boutiques selling couture garments, accessories, and handbags. Planning to shop? Try Le Metropole Shopping center in Monte-Carlo, one of the world’s best fashion shopping centers. Porto Cervo in Sardinia and La Croisette in Cannes are also must-visit shopping destinations.

Festivals In the Mediterranean, guests are regularly treated to great food, wine, sporting, and cultural festivals. Cannes Film Festival, of course, might be the most famous, drawing A-list celebrities from around the world. Yet, every weekend in the summer, there’s a seaside festival to attend.

Water Sports The waters in the Mediterranean are inviting, and chances are, you’ll spend quite a bit of time in the water while on charter. In particular, the Mediterranean is a hotspot for kitesurfing and windsurfing – especially throughout Italy. Yet, sea kayaking and paddle-boarding are other top activities on a Mediterranean charter. Bottom line, you’ll bask in the sapphire waters during your visit.

Scuba Diving The Mediterranean is rich with history inland, as well as under the sea. In fact, you’ll find incredible dive spots throughout the region. Secca della Colombara and Punta Omo Morto in Italy are favorite dive spots, for example.

Wine For wine-lovers, the Mediterranean is a mecca, offering the best glasses in all of the world. The region’s wine-making tradition, of course, goes back thousands of years, and in every port of call, you’ll find a wine bar, cellar, or bodega serving the best wines. From Sassicaia and Ornellaia from Italy to Bordeaux from France, wine lovers will find much to try and taste in the Mediterranean.

Beach Hopping The Mediterranean offers it all. Art, culture, food, you name it. But there’s another reason to book a luxury yacht charter : Mediterranean beaches! From the Amalfi Coast to Ibiza, from St. Tropez to Sicily, you’ll be welcomed by sun-soaked, white-sand beaches offering the best spots to relax and take in the scenery in every port of call.

Super Yacht Charter: Cruising Conditions

Across the Mediterranean, charter guests are welcomed by amazing cruising conditions: Small swells, calm seas, and amazing weather. Yet each destination offers its own unique cruising experience.

  • Corsica – Corsica offers more than 700 miles of coastline to explore and is known for its upscale marinas, ports, and stunning anchorages. In particular, the Strait of Bonifacio is a top sailing destination, thanks to its steady natural breezes. Around the island, visitors are welcomed by calm seas and cooling breezes throughout summer, as well as warm water conditions.
  • French Riviera – The South of France has a short coastline – just about 400 nautical miles – but there’s much to see and explore along the Cote d’Azur. Here, you’ll find a collection of the world’s most exclusive marinas – like Port Hercule in Monaco and Port de Saint Tropez Marina – and breathtaking anchorages. (Plaga Mala, for example, is a super-tranquil South of France beach anchorage.) Cruising conditions here are ideal: Steady winds, easy 2- to 4-foot swells in summer, and cool breezes.
  • Spain – The Balearic Islands some of the most beautiful anchorages in all of the Mediterranean. The island of Espalmador is a favorite superyacht anchorage. Plus, the marinas like Mallorca’s Club du Mar attract some of the finest superyachts in the world. Sailing is great throughout summer with warm sea winds – June through August. Spring and fall offer more challenging conditions.
  • Sardinia – One of the top sailing destinations in the Mediterranean, sailors come for the steady sea breezes, as well as the protected waters and safe harbors. Calm seas and warm waters welcome visitors in summer.
  • Italian Riviera – An ideal motor yachting destination , with some of the most exclusive marinas in the country including at Portofino and San Remo, the Italian Riviera is an ideal spot for a luxury motor yachting experience.
  • Amalfi Coast – Here you’ll find a collection of some of the most breathtaking anchorages anywhere in the world: Marina Piccola near Capri and the Pontine Islands are two see-it-to-believe-it anchorages. Due to its somewhat longer passage, Amalfi tends to be better for motor yachts.
  • Sicily – The northern and eastern coasts of Sicily offer the best in sail and motor yachting. Here you’ll find well-established marinas, protected waters, and short passages between destinations. In the nearby Aeolian Islands, island hopping in calm seas is a tradition.

Seaworthy Secrets

The Mediterranean Yachting Season: A Comprehensive Guide

Whether you are a Yacht crew member, sailor or yacht owner, the Mediterranean Yachting Season is an alluring destination.

Idyllic coastlines flanked with picture-perfect beaches, delicious food, wine, and a host of cultural experiences make the Mediterranean a hotspot for the Yachting elite.

Unlike in the Caribbean and USA, yachting in the Mediterranean has a very specific time frame in which it operates, May to October. In order to increase your chances of finding a job, it is important to know where to be and when.

Here we will explore everything you need to know about the Mediterranean Yacht Season. From crew agents, marinas, accommodation, timing, transport, and key events to look out for.

When is the Mediterranean Yachting Season?

The Mediterranean Yachting Season runs from May to October. This is known as the Summer season (in the Northern Hemisphere), and these are the best months for cruising around the Mediterranean.

The Best Locations for you to Join the Mediterranean Yachting Season

There are a few locations where you can choose to position yourself if you are trying to find a job on a yacht.

Antibes (France) – The Best Location for Green Crew Entering the Yachting Industry

Antibes is one of the main yachting hubs in the Mediterranean.

Here you will find an abundance of crew housing options and an amazing network of crew agents located in the famous Port Vauban.

You also have access to the train which will take you down to Cannes or up as far as Genoa. So if any job opportunities or interviews come up, you can be there easily within hours. This is one of the main attractions of Antibes for job seekers.

It is a great idea to head out to some of the smaller marinas in Antibes as well as along the French Riviera while seeking work. Some of these marinas don’t have as strict security as you will find in Antibes.

Marinas in the French Riviera to Visit while Seeking Work for the Mediterranean Yachting Season

  • Port Vauban: the main marina right off the Old Town of Antibes
  • Antibes Marina
  • Port Gallice (Juan-Les-Pins): walking distance from the Old Town
  • Port Pierre Canto: home to the Cannes Film Festival
  • Port de Cannes Marina (Cannes)
  • Port Hercule (Monaco): one of the most famous marinas in the world
  • Fontveille Marina (Monaco)
  • Port de Cap d’Ail (Cap d’Ail): Located between Monaco and Nice, this is a popular Super Yacht location
  • Marina La Ciotat (Port Vieux)
  • Port de Beaulieu-sur-Mer (Beaulieu-sur-Mer)

Antibes itself is in fact a small town, however the Yachts pack up in the marinas at the start of the season so there will be a lot of other crew seeking work.

If you choose to head to Antibes before the season starts, you will need to book your accommodation far in advance!

If you are new to dock walking and feeling uncertain, check out my post on Dock Walking – 9 Tips to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Job .

Antibes Crew Houses

Crew houses are a fantastic way for Crew to network with other Crew members, as well as a cheaper option for accommodation while seeking work.

A few of your best Antibes Crew houses are:

  • The Crew Grapevine
  • Debbie’s Crew House
  • The Crew House
  • The Glamorgan
  • Amma’s Crew House

For more detailed information on each of these crew houses with rates and booking information, check out my post on the 7 Best Antibes Crew Houses: Where to stay for first-timers.

Antibes Crew Agents

One of your best entries into the Mediterranean Yachting Season is through Yacht Crew Agents. These recruitment agencies are dedicated to placing crew on Yachts.

Once you have gone through the process of signing up online, it is a great idea to arrange an interview so they can meet you face-to-face.

A few of my favorite Yacht Crew Agencies in Antibes are:

  • Luxury Yacht Group
  • Hill Robinson Crew
  • The Crew Network
  • Northrop and Johnson
  • Blue Water Crew

Getting around Antibes

If you are located in Old Town Antibes, you can easily walk around the port. However, you may want to get yourself a bike or e-scooter to save your energy while walking between all the marinas.

Uber is an easy way to get around however it is not cheap if you are on a budget.

If you are looking to travel around the French Riviera, the train is a fantastic and easy option.

The Gare d’Antibes Train station is only a 15-minute walk from the old town. The most common train service on this route is operated by TER (Transport Express Régional) and connects Antibes to Monaco. The journey involves one transfer at Nice so be sure to check your destination.

Prices vary but you can expect to spend €6-€20 for a ticket depending on your destination.

Gare d’Antibes can be found at: 11 Avenue Robert Soleau, 06600 Antibes, France

Events to look out for near Antibes

If a Yacht is involved in a big event, the crew will always need extra assistance. So be sure to head over to these Marinas before these events and hand out your CV!

  • Cannes Film Festival: End of May
  • Monaco Grand Prix: End of May
  • Cannes Yacht Festival: Early September
  • Monaco Yacht Show: End of September

sailing boats and motor yachts docked in a marina during the Mediterranean yachting season in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca (Spain) – Home to the Start of the Mediterranean Yachting Season

Palma is a Spanish island in the Balearics and a very popular destination for Yachts and crew alike. In fact, it is so popular that many yacht crew choose to call it home when they leave the yachting industry.

Palma is known to have a wide range of Yachts including both motor and sailing vessels.

Marinas in Palma de Mallorca

The best locations for dock walking in Palma are the various marinas in the Bay of Palma, Puerto Portals and Port Adriano.

Marinas in the bay of Palma to name a few include:

  • Club de Mar
  • Marina Moll Vell – Home to the International Yacht show
  • La Lonja Marina Charter
  • Marina Port de Mallorca
  • Puerto Palma

I must point out however that it is not easy to dock walk in Palma. The marinas are gated and security is tight. If you walk over with confidence and look the part, you may just get in.

Ideally, you want to know a Yacht or crew member in the marina. Network, network, network!

Crew Houses in Palma

If you are going to seek work in Palma, then your ideal locations to stay are Santa Catalina, La Lonja, or the Old town.

As with any popular Yachting destination, you will need to book your accommodation well in advance.

Some popular crew housing options in Palma are:

  • Crew Guest House Palma
  • The Boathouse Palma
  • Caimari Crew Accommodation
  • Hostal Apuntadores (A hostel option if the crew houses are booked)
  • Monzly Rentals (A great option for short to medium-term rentals)

Palma Crew Agents

Given that dock walking in Palma can be a little tricky, you want to emphasise getting signed up to the crew agencies. Take your time and try to get a face-to-face interview if possible.

Some of you may have already signed up with these agencies. Remember to log in regularly, and change your location if you moved since your last login!

  • Sovren Crew
  • Van Allen Crew Agency
  • Global Crew Services
  • Hill Robinson
  • A-Z Yachting

female sitting on the bow of a yacht in the ocean with a view of the French Riviera in the background

Getting Around Palma de Mallorca

Getting around Palma couldn’t be easier. The good old Bus. It is easy, cheap, and efficient.

You will want to use the EMT bus as there are an abundance of bus stops and they travel all through the city.

The fare for the EMT bus is €2, and they take CASH ONLY.

Please note that in the summer months, these buses get very busy, and sometimes they will pass bus stops if they are too full. If you have an interview or job lined up, be sure to head out early to allow for delays.

Palmas Big Events during the Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Palma International Boat Show is known to inaugurate the Mediterranean Yachting Season. This 4-day event hosts spectacular yachts both for sale and for charter.

The Yacht show usually happens at the end of April and marks the start of the Mediterranean Season.

You can expect to see over 250 boats on display during the show so the month leading up to this time would be an excellent opportunity for day work.

Timing for the Mediterranean

If you are looking for work in the Mediterranean, you can head over as early as February/March! There will be 2 categories of vessels to look out for:

The Yachts that Spent the Winter Season in the Yard

When the Winter season hits in the Mediterranean, it becomes bitterly cold and rainy. Some owners choose to leave their vessels in the Yard during the winter months.

Most yacht crew choose to leave these programs in the winter and these boats will run on skeleton crew.

Therefore, in February/March, these boats will start hiring crew again in order to start getting the boat operating and ready for the upcoming season.

Yachts that Head Over from the Caribbean

These vessels went to the Caribbean for the Winter and now they are crossing the Atlantic and making their way back to the Mediterranean to start a new season.

As these vessels arrive in March/April, they will need a lot of extra help getting cleaned and organized after the big ocean crossing they just did.

These vessels may also see crew changes as they head into a new season.

My advice here is to get onto Marine Traffic . Depending on where you have located yourself, you will be able to see as vessels are entering the harbor. You should make a point of being available to offer help as they arrive.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Caribbean, check out my post on The Caribbean Yachting Season: Ultimate Guide.

Visas and Passports Required for the Mediterranean Yachting Season

If you are not a European citizen, it is important to understand how you can get into Europe and how much time you can stay there. Your visa requirements will depend on your personal home country and passport.

For more detailed information on your personal requirements, go to the Schengen Visa Website.

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any member of the Schengen Area, per stay for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes (Usually 90 days within 180 days).

Schengen refers to the EU passport-free zone that covers most of the European countries.

Currently, there are three types of Schengen visas that apply to non-EU seafarers:

  • Transit (Type B) Schengen visa
  • Short-stay (Type C) Schengen visa
  • Long-stay (Type D) Schengen visa

Seafarers are likely to be issued with the Short-stay visa. This allows you 90 days within the Schengen area, at which point you would need to leave for 90 days.

Additionally, you also need to try to get yourself a multi-entry visa . This allows you to travel between the different European countries.

DO NOT OVERSTAY YOUR VISA! Keep a close eye on your days. If you overstay, you could be banned from coming back for 3 years or more.

A rendering of the live-aborad world-spanning yacht ULYSSIA, planned for a 2029 launch. The ... [+] 130-residence ULYSSIA will travel the world on an itinerary of the passenger-owners choosing.

Where would the travel industry be without dreamers? Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first flight in the North Carolina dunes was just 120 years ago. In 2024, a record-breaking 5 billion people will fly this year .

Dreamers have created everything from great gaming palaces in barren deserts to low-fare airlines. What if your dream was to build an elegant yacht big enough for 250 people to live aboard as they constantly sail around the world?

That’s the goal of ULYSSIA founder Frank Binder, a life-long yachtsman. Binder, a Monaco-based architect, MBA and entrepreneur, recently spoke at a launch event in Los Angeles. The event featured a beautiful scale model of the ship, overlooking a sparking Hollywood Hills pool.

Binder’s dream is ULYSSIA, an upcoming state-of-the-art 320-meter, 15-deck residential superyacht. At 99,600 gross tons, the ULYSSIA will be larger than the World War II battleship Missouri, which weighed 58,000 tons and measured 887 feet. Unlike the battleship, the ULYSSIA will have a 2:1 crew to guest ratio.

ULYSSIA construction is planned to start in late 2024, but no later than September 2025. Delivery is expected in October 2028, but no later than October 2029. The cost of the ship is estimated at $1.5 billion dollars.

The globe-spanning ship is named after Ulysses, the Roman name for Odysseus, who navigated the seas on his great Odyssey. Yachts are female, referred to as ‘she.’ ULYSSIA is thus a female interpretation of Ulysses.

An artist's rendering of the outside pool deck of the ULYSSIA. The ocean-going super yacht, slated ... [+] for a 2029 arrival, will have 132 live-aboard residences.

“Our vision is that of a unique lifestyle on a residential yacht that travels the world. This is floating real estate. But it's much more than that. It's about the lifestyle that we're offering, the possibility to discover the world without leaving home, within a community of people that you will find nowhere else,” CEO Frank Binder explained. “We will enable owners to give back as we travel, wherever we see there's need, and we’ll use the yacht as a platform to do ocean conservation work.”

The ship is indeed designed to sail the Seven Seas. She has a draft of just 7.5 meters, making many mid-size harbors accessible. Yet the ship’s broad beam of 34 meters makes the ship’s large residences possible.

Designed to be “the world’s most exclusive residential yacht community,” ULYSSIA comprises 132 residences as well as 22 guest suites for visitors. One-, two-, three- and four-bedroom layouts are available, with immaculate kitchens, pantries, powder rooms and large walk-in closets. Each residence will have an ocean terrace.

All will offer “five-star amenities and curated authentic experiences.” Pets may be able to join your journey, but certain breeds will not be permitted. All will need a ‘pet passport’ with vaccination history.

Residences can be designed ready to occupy, save for personal effects and art works. Alternatively, buyers can appoint their own design team or choose from designs from one of eight world class interior designers. They include lead designer Francesca Muzio, and Jean-Michel Gathy, Nicole Hollis, Sabrina Monte-Carlo, Jenan Hajjar and Lenny Kravitz.

Pricing for the onboard residences starts at EUR 9.6M. The company says the average price is around 18M, with top-end residences around 24.5M. The ship also features several luxurious penthouses that start at 57.5M EUR.

Artist's conception of the rear marina and 'beach' of the ULYSSIA super yacht, where boats, ... [+] paddleboards and other sea 'toys' can be launched.

Residents will also pay an annual cost of ownership fee, analogous to the homeowners association fee in a luxury condominium development. ULYSSIA projects the total annual cost of ownership at between 3 and 3.5% of the purchase price. This will cover a food and beverage allowance, all regular maintenance and operating costs including itinerary, fuel, insurance and crew.

To get your foot in the door, there is a 10,000 EUR Reservation Fee, with additional scheduled fees like 20% at Purchase Contract Signing, 20% at Start of Construction, etc. Interested parties can register their interest at ulyssia.com. A member of the Ulyssia Residences team will be in touch.

In addition to the residences, the 15-deck super yacht will have many shared spaces for members to mingle. This includes five restaurants, both an interior and exterior pool, as well as classroom facilities for children, business services for members, and medical facilities slated to include equipment up to MRI machines.

There will be a Mediterranean Restaurant, an Asian Restaurant, a sushi bar, a private dining room, The Grille and the ULYSSIA theatre. There is a gym and a spa with multiple treatment rooms. Then there’s the arts and crafts club, a golf club, a brasserie and even a grocery. There’s a pickleball court and a house of worship, as well as a marina and a beach club.

The ship will also have boats and Zodiac inflatables for island expeditions. Two helicopters will be on board for transport, expeditions and of course, heliskiing. There are also a pair of Triton submarines for underwater exploration.

The ship was designed by experts in the maritime and hospitality industries. Envisioned by Binder, it was designed by Espen Øino and is slated for construction by Meyer Werft , one of the largest, most modern shipyards in the world.

Artist's conception of the ULYSSIA super yacht, showing one of the ship's helicopters for transport, ... [+] expeditions or heli-skiing.

The ship will be powered by efficient internal combustion engines using clean-burning methanol with advanced emission control systems, so that environmental impact will be reduced to a minimum. Advanced laundry and garbage treatment systems will significantly reduce the yacht’s overall energy demand.

ULYSSIA is also able to use green energy via a shore connection. The engines can be shut down completely to reduce emissions and pollution in the ports.

The first three years of the itinerary are pre-determined, due to the lead time required to ensure ULYSSIA can be accommodated at her destinations. Thereafter, a democratically elected board made up of five to seven resident owners will consult residents and the operator to create and approve the itinerary a minimum of two years in advance.

With a shipload of multimillionaires and billionaires, how will ULYSSIA avoid a DIEHARD situation at sea, like piracy, kidnapping, or terrorists making a statement?

According to a spokesperson, ULYSSIA will have a robust safety and security system based on multiple layers of both visible and invisible services. The company partners with Marine Guard, a leader in protecting ultra-high-net-worth families in the marine and yachting industries.

ULYSSIA’s security team will also include several professionals with former Special Forces backgrounds. “We will be able to detect and deal with any threats from the air, on the water and underwater,” said a spokeswoman.

“The ULYSSIA’s residents have the extraordinary opportunity to journey in safety and privacy to all corners of the world from the comfort of their own homes – to chic yachting ports, iconic cities and the remotest locations on Earth,” the spokesperson added. “On the M/Y ULYSSIA, your home is the world, and your life knows no boundaries.”

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

I’m convinced below deck mediterranean’s johnathan shillingford is a producer plant, below deck mediterranean season 10: latest news, potential cast, & everything we know.

Chef Johnathan “Jono” Shillingford showed signs throughout Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 that he may not be a real chef. The ninth season of the popular Below Deck spin-off tapped Captain Sandy Yawn to lead the crew. The success of the Mediterranean-based yachting series had been on a downward spiral since Captain Sandy infamously fired Hannah Ferrier in season 5. However, Aesha Scott returned to the show as Chief Stew after debuting in the franchise during seasons 4 and 5. While she certainly improved Below Deck Med season 9 , viewers still critiqued the show .

Much of the cast brought a fresh vibe to the franchise staple. Gael Cameron and Nathan Gallagher’s boatmance intrigued the audience as Gael started the season with a boyfriend. On the contrary, Bri Muller and Elena “Ellie” Dubaich spent the charter season feuding among themselves over lead deckhand Joe Bradley. Aside from drama-related storylines, Iain Maclean and Chef Jono were critiqued for seemingly faking their poor performances to create drama. Chef Jono has been accused of being cast to stir up drama, but he may not be the only producer plant on Below Deck Med season 9 .

Chef Johnathan Hasn't Been Fired Despite Poor Performance

Captain sandy didn’t fire him after multiple mistakes.

Even though the chef has underperformed throughout season 9, he wasn’t fired for his mistakes. Chef Jono began the charter season on a high note but quickly fell from grace when he failed to impress Captain Sandy’s dear friend. He notoriously served the charter guests chicken and deconstructed sponge cake . After a rough dinner, the captain encouraged him to improve but chose to give him another shot at improving. Captain Sandy was admittedly disappointed with him but didn’t axe him from the crew right away. However, Chef Jono’s near-fatal mistake may have permanently damaged his reputation.

During one of the final charter trips of Below Deck Med season 9, the chef served a guest with “ iron overload ” raw seafood.

When the guest was presented with the dish, tuna carpaccio with pineapple caramel, she admired it but reiterated that she couldn’t eat it or she could die. After Captain Sandy heard that Chef Jono had prepared guest food that could potentially kill them , she was furious. She immediately went to the galley, questioned him, and requested a new chef. However, because she couldn't find a replacement in time, they kept Jono on board.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

If Captain Sandy had early doubts about Chef Jono, Sandy should have fired him after he served the guests chicken and sponge cake. If she fired Chef Jono earlier in the season, the near-fatal accident could have been avoided, but that doesn't shift any of the blame for the mistake onto anyone else except for him. When Captain Sandy finally had enough, it was too difficult to find a chef who could step into his place .

Chef Johnathan's Meals Are A Hit Or Miss

His dishes aren’t consistent with the guests.

Jono’s meals have been a hit or miss with guests throughout his tenure as a Below Deck chef. He impressed the guests on the first charter when he was forced to work with limited provisions. However, Chef Jono had a rocky track record and disappointed many of the other groups of guests. His chicken and sponge cake dinner was probably his worst showing of the season, apart from serving a guest raw seafood who had a severe allergy to the dish.

Chef Johnathan Doesn't Seem To Know How To Work Like A Real Chef

He was an architect before he became a chef.

Chef Jono admitted he was an architect before he pursued a career in the culinary industry. Part of his success as a chef was his ability to blend his passion for food and architecture into one craft. However, his lack of experience showed at times. Throughout the charter season, he failed to prepare luxurious desserts. When a group of guests requested a high-end final dish and were served a chocolate chip cookie, they were upset. With a little bit more experience under his belt, Chef will be a fully rounded chef.

Chef Johnathan Is There For Entertainment Purposes

He brought the entertainment on below deck med season 9.

Chef Jono has brought the entertainment to Below Deck Med season 9. While he hasn’t been involved in the drama amongst the crew, he brought a fresh energy to the cast . While Bri and Ellie argued about Joe , he offered his unsolicited opinions on their conflict in his confessional interviews. There’s an improvement to be made in his work as a chef, but his personality was captivating, which led some viewers to believe he was a producer plant in the cast, though he likely wasn’t.

Jono was quite the chef on Below Deck Mediterranean season 9. He made several mistakes on the show but managed to maintain his job working for Captain Sandy. Chef Jono’s faults even led some fans to speculate he was a producer plant for the show.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo and is available to stream the following day on Peacock.

The Mediterranean dried out 5.5 million years ago, offering sobering lessons for humanity today

by Daniel García-Castellanos and Konstantina Agiadi, The Conversation

5.5 million years ago the Mediterranean dried out, with sobering lessons for humanity today

What would happen if humans dried out the Mediterranean sea, turning it into a giant salt lake? Would its wildlife survive, and if so, how long would it take to recover?

These may seem like wildly theoretical questions, but not for Herman Sörgel , a Bavarian architect who dedicated much of his life to this exact project: building a giant dam across the Strait of Gibraltar, letting the Mediterranean dry up, and colonizing the land reclaimed from the sea.

Sörgel organized lectures and documentaries and raised funds until the 1950s for a project which, he believed, would promote cooperation between Africa and Europe, and power both continents through gigantic hydroelectric megaprojects.

What he did not know was that his dream had already come true at the end of the Miocene era, 5.5 million years ago, as a simple result of natural forces.

When the Mediterranean disappeared

Since the 1970s, several generations of marine geologists and geophysicists have confirmed the existence of a one to three kilometer thick layer of salt buried throughout most of the deeper parts of the Mediterranean Sea.

This is almost a million cubic kilometers of salt that testify to a brief period when the Mediterranean was isolated from the rest of the world's oceans—brief in the geological sense, as the episode lasted about 190,000 years.

The culprit was not, of course, an eccentric German architect, but plate tectonics. The Mediterranean basin, trapped between two continents that today continue to move closer by up to two centimeters every year, was cut off from the Atlantic. Its waters quickly evaporated due to the region's arid climate, leaving behind vast amounts of salt.

This episode, known as the Messinian salinity crisis (the Messinian being the last period of the Miocene), is the biggest extinction event suffered by the Earth since the meteorite that wiped out the flightless dinosaurs and ended the Mesozoic era 65 million years ago.

5.5 million years ago the Mediterranean dried out, with sobering lessons for humanity today

As a result, no geoengineering experiments are needed to answer our initial question: how resilient is marine life in the face of an environmental crisis of this magnitude?

The answer has just been published in the journal Science , in a study led by Konstantina Agiadi of the University of Vienna in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council and 28 other scientists from 25 European institutes.

After gathering all Mediterranean fossil data from between 12 and 3.6 million years ago, the results suggest that native marine life was virtually extinct when the Mediterranean was cut off, and that subsequent recolonization by Atlantic species gave rise to a Mediterranean fauna more similar to the one we find there today.

Native, extinct and migrant species

By statistically analyzing information from more than 750 scientific papers, we were able to document 22,932 presences of a total of 4,897 marine species living in the Mediterranean. Before the crisis, 779 species could be considered endemic species (i.e., documented only in the Mediterranean). Of those, only 86 were still present after the salinity crisis. All the tropical corals that were abundant in the Mediterranean before this cataclysmic environmental change disappeared.

However, some apparently endemic sardine species managed to survive. The sirenian, a sea mammal related to today's manatees and dugongs (also known as sea cows) also survived.

Because fossil records are limited and fragmented, we cannot be certain that these species were all endemic, or that they would not have survived outside the Mediterranean, hence the value of basing our study on statistics from a large number of species. But for those that were endemic, where did they manage to survive, and what refuges did they find to avoid the radical increase in salt levels and temperature?

These questions remain unanswered, but we have been able to establish that changes in populations are the result of replacement by Atlantic species after the Mediterranean's re-flooding , rather than rapid adaptation to the new hypersaline environment. In other words, life did not have enough time to adapt, and the extinct species were replaced by Atlantic species that migrated into the Mediterranean.

5.5 million years ago the Mediterranean dried out, with sobering lessons for humanity today

Several iconic species, such as the great white shark and the dolphin, only appeared in the Mediterranean after the crisis. Even more interestingly, the current richness of fauna in the western Mediterranean only came after the re-flooding—previously, the eastern Mediterranean (Ionian and Levantine Seas) had possessed a higher number of different species.

Lessons on mass extinction

The impact of the Mediterranean's isolation on its fauna and flora was catastrophic, destroying most of its ecosystems. Another significant finding from our research is that it took more than 1.7 million years for species numbers to recover. This slow recovery of the richness of Mediterranean ecosystems provides the first detailed quantification of how wildlife responds to an extinction event of this magnitude.

The Mediterranean's biodiversity today is very high thanks to the presence of numerous endemic species. Our results suggest that this was also the case 6 million years ago, but that the vast majority of these endemic species disappeared when it was cut off from the Atlantic.

Perhaps another lesson learned from this study is that, however tempting it may be to believe that geoengineering projects can allow us to maintain our current rate of emissions and ecosystem destruction, the Earth's geological past will reveal more than any experiment.

When the Mediterranean was reconnected to the Atlantic, it was repopulated by the huge reserve of species in the world's oceans, yet it still took millions of years for the Mediterranean's ecosystems to recover in terms of richness. No one knows yet how long it will take for marine life to recover from the kind of global-scale change that is currently underway.
