Ship Upgrades

You can follow the upgrade chart below to build your ship up to an Epheria carrack.

Steps for Upgrading to Epheria Carracks

black desert online epheria sailboat

The basic starter ship for most Adventurers is the Bartali sailboat. However, you can opt to purchase an Epheria sailboat or frigate license from the Central Market to skip this step.

As you can see above, you will need to pick between an Epheria sailboat or frigate early on, as it will give you different options of Epheria carracks you can ultimately upgrade your ship to, depending on their use.

Bartali Sailboat

black desert online epheria sailboat

The Bartali sailboat is the most basic of the large ships you can get. It can be purchased from Proix, the owner of the Dancing Marlin Tavern in Velia, for 10,000,000 silver.

You can also obtain one as a quest reward through the questline [The Great Expedition] First Sailboat into Oquilla’s Eye , which begins with the quest Vigorous Velia , with a Lv. 50 or higher character while in the territory of Balenos. The actual quest that gives the ship as a reward is called Jarette's Support .

It is also recommended to do this questline due to the sailor’s oath it gives as rewards. These items, when used, permanently expand your max sailor slots. These become important down the line as you progress in your effort to obtain better ships.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Remember, you can purchase the ship licenses for Epheria sailboats and frigates from the Central Market, if you can afford it, to skip this part of the process.

Epheria Sailboat/Frigate

black desert online epheria sailboat

The Epheria sailboat (left) and Epheria frigate (right) are on the second stage of the carrack upgrade path. As these two ships differ in which type of carracks they can ultimately upgrade to, they’re the point in which an important decision has to be made.

Epheria sailboats allow you to eventually make the Balance carrack or the Advance carrack. The Balance carrack has stats evenly distributed, while the Advance carrack is the ideal ship for bartering, as it can carry more weight.

Epheria frigates on the other hand allow you to make the Valor carrack or the Volante carrack. The Valor carrack is great for sea monster hunting and naval combat, while the Volante carrack is the fastest of all the carracks.

Do you ultimately want the best ship for naval combat, or the fastest one? Go for an Epheria frigate. Do you, instead, want the best ship for bartering, or a jack of all trades, master of none? Go for an Epheria sailboat.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Remember that ship licenses for Epheria sailboats and frigates can be purchased from the Central Market.

If you would like to make your own, follow the steps shown below.

◈ How to Upgrade

Register the ship you wish to upgrade at a wharf via the Wharf Manager NPC. Then use the Upgrade menu option and add all the materials required to upgrade the ship.

However, you cannot upgrade your ship under the following circumstances: - A piece of equipment is not at max durability. - The ship has equipment equipped or has items in its inventory. - A sailor is on board the ship.

The equipment required to upgrade the Bartali sailboat to an Epheria sailboat or Epheria frigate can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. You can then use Black Stones to enhance them. When you fail an enhancement attempt, the max durability of the equipment will decrease. You can purchase more of the same equipment and use the copies to repair the original’s max durability to full.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Alternatively, you can craft your own Epheria sailboat & frigate ship licenses in the town house of Port Epheria 3-5, 2nd floor, when employed as a shipyard. Obtaining them this way, most of the materials needed are halved in number.

◈ Improved Epheria Sailboat/Frigate

Additionally, sailboats and frigates can both be improved. Once they are improved, you can use the skills Volley and Focus Fire. Volley allows you to move the cannons on the left or right and fire them. Focus Fire allows you to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice.

There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. Defeating these enemies will also help you obtain materials for the next step of the upgrade path. Thus, having your ship improved will aid you in your endeavor to build a carrack.

As with the upgrade from a Bartali sailboat, you can improve your ships at any wharf manager.

However, keep in mind that improving your ship does not change the materials required to upgrade them to a caravel or galleass.

◈ Improved Sailboat/Frigate Upgrade Materials

Epheria: Old Figurehead

Epheria: Old Plating

Steel x200

Hard Pillar x30

Ultimate Armor Reform Stone x10

Epheria Caravel/Galleass

black desert online epheria sailboat

Epheria caravels (left) have 30 slots and can carry 10,000LT. This makes them great trading and bartering ships. On the other hand, the Epheria galleass (right) has 4 cannons on each side, for a total of 8 cannons, which makes them great for naval combat.

Both of them can be improved to use the sailing skill Volley while moving, or the  Focus Fire skill to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice for massive damage.

Some of the upgrade materials for both types of ships are obtained by defeating sea monsters, while others require you to barter for them. Both methods, sea monster hunting and bartering, will broaden your knowledge of content available at sea. That’s why even if you only want a bartering ship you will need to defeat sea monsters, and why even if you only want a ship for naval combat you will need to barter a bit.

The materials required to upgrade your ship to a caravel or galleass are listed below.

The 4 pieces of equipment required to upgrade to an Epheria caravel or Epheria galleass can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. The equipment pieces can be enhanced Tidal Black Stones. When using these stones to enhance ship equipment, you have a 100% chance to succeed at all levels. You will need 55 Tidal Black Stones to enhance a piece of equipment up to +10, and a total of 220 Tidal Black Stones to enhance all four of them.

You can obtain Tidal Black Stones as follows.

1. Ravinia’s sisters have anchored in Port Epheria (Ruvinia), Velia (Rovinia), and Iliya Island (Revinia). You can exchange Lv. 1 bartering trade goods through Ruvinia, Rovinia, and Revinia in exchange for Crow Merchants Guild's barter vouchers.

2. Bring the Crow Merchants Guild's barter vouchers obtained from one of the sisters to Ravinia at the Crow’s Nest to exchange them for Tidal Black Stones. Rumor has it that Morco in Velia will also take these vouchers and exchange them for Tidal Black Stones as well.

3. Alternatively, at a low rate, you can obtain these Black Stones from defeating the following sea monsters: Young Hekaru, Young Ocean Stalker, Hekaru, and Ocean Stalker.

◈ Crow’s Nest and Ravinia

You might not have heard of Crow’s Nest or Ravinia at this point in your adventure.  Crow’s Nest is an island shrouded in fog, located north of Tinberra Island.

Once you arrive in Crow’s Nest, you can talk to the NPC Ravinia. She runs the crow coin shop that sells items needed to upgrade large ships. However, keep in mind that she asks for large sums of crow coins for any purchase, and thus it cannot be relied upon to obtain all the materials you require to upgrade your ships.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Crow’s Nest is the island covered in fog managed by the Crow Merchants Guild, located north of Tinberra Island. Many at sea, both wealthy and unfortunate alike, search for its location for one or another reason.

Ravinia also gives the Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log questline you will have seen mentioned above. You can complete these quests to get ship upgrading materials you need.

The first quest you get is called Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log I, and the last quest is Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log VII. It will take 7 days to accept these quests in order. When you complete each of these quests, Ravinia will reward you with Ravinia's Wiggly Waggly Letter. You use these letters to accept quests from Ravinia. The quests she gives provide upgrade materials required to upgrade caravels and galleasses.

How to Build Epheria Sailboat, The Personal Trading Boat in BDO

The Epheria Sailboat can be only built in a level 3 shipyard, and you can use sailors to enhance different stats.

It needs a massive amount of materials as the sailboat is on a whole other level compared to any existing fishing boat, ferry, or raft. The amount of pine plywood and timber squares needed for construction ranges from 600 to 1500 at maximum.

Also, the construction is only available after 20 days at least, given that you are not participating in anything else besides the daily quest given by Falasi. Even if you have constantly saved up other materials, you still need 20 designs to construct the ship. You can obtain one design from the daily quest in Epheria, meaning that you will need to eventually complete 20 daily quests.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Do the quest, and gather the designs

You obviously need to gather the materials first if you ever wish to attempt to build this sailboat. The materials you need for the construction are 20 Design: Epheria Sailboat, 800 Standardized Timber Squares, 600 Steel, 1500 Pine Plywood, and 300 Flax Fabric.

Here’s the breakdown of the required materials:

20 Design: Epheria Sailboat 600 steel [3000 coal + 15000 iron ore] 300 flax fabric [15000 flax] 800 standardized timber square [80000 logs]

Note that the amount of raw materials above are just theoretical, under assumption that you only produce one item per input. The number can be reduced significantly due to varying results from processing, with the range of 1~4 products per one input given that your processing level is at Artisan. So-called “critical hits for processing” further reduce the potential amount of required materials because it allows players to produce upper tier items. For example, you can sometimes get standardized timber square straight from chopping logs, although the chance is low.

You need to speak to Philaberto Falasi in Epheria and get the daily quest that will offer Design: Epheria Sailboat. The quest requires a player to take a crate and deliver it to Sebastian on the docks twice.

The quest itself is quite simple and can be done swiftly, but it will take 20 days as the quest is available only once a day for one family. The quest does not require amity and is obtainable if the character is level 11.

black desert online epheria sailboat

There is also the one time questline in Epheria that allows you to obtain up to 3 additional Designs. After you reach level 55, you can start the quest by talking to Pavino Greko, the storage keeper in Epheria, and the quest can be seen on the recommended quest list.

The questline begins from ‘I Knew This Day Would Come’ and consists of more than 20 quests. You get one design from each of the following quests along the consecutive questline; ‘Dream Crushed by Cox Pirates’, ‘Grotesque Trench’, and ‘Completed Map, Toward the Ancient Shrine’.

Not only does the questline provide the sailboat designs, it also offers Margoria’s AdventurerⅠCompass, Golden Dagger, Gold Ingot, and other various items, so it would be worth it to try out if you have a character higher than level 55. However, you need to either prepare some items that enhance swimming speed or take a ferry, as the quests require players to sail the sea.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Materials other than the design are obtainable by gathering or sending workers to the nodes. With the standardized timber square, you can process the log twice to have one timber square. You get the usable scantling when you chop the log under processing, and you get the standardized timber square when you chop the usable scantling.

Unlike other materials such as steel, pine plywood, and flax fabric, you can only obtain standardized timber squares when you manually gather the wood, hence the process requires a lot of time. You can purchase logs and timber squares from the marketplace if you can spare silver, but chances are that it would be much faster to just chop the trees yourself.

With pine plywood, you can get it by processing pine timbers. The process goes: pine plank from pine timbers by chopping, and a pine plywood from pine planks. You can get timber by cutting them down manually or sending some workers, and the nodes that provide timbers are the Serendia Shrine and Marie Cave. It is recommended to do both manual logging and using workers together since the required amount of timber is massive.

If you are looking to cut down some logs yourself, it would be wise to visit the area where you can gather pine timber as well. The place is southwest of Calpheon; the area around Calpheon Castle and the road on the way to Trent to be exact. You can also find a handful of pine timber around the Castle Ruins.

black desert online epheria sailboat

The iron ore and flax which are used for steel and flax fabric can be also obtained by manual gathering and using workers. However, it is wise to use workers for this type of materials.

You can gather iron ore at a number of nodes such as Coastal Cave, Coastal Cliff, Northern Heidel Quarry, Southern Cienaga, Hexe Stone Wall, Abandoned Iron Mine, Bashim Base, Pilgrim’s Haven, and Crescent Mountains, and flax at Costa Farm, Moretti Plantation, and Kamasylve Temple.

As you can only gather logs by manually cutting them down, it is wise to use energy on manual logging and use workers for iron ore and flax. If you are lacking contribution points and cannot connect all nodes, it is efficient to connect the nodes around Serendia and Glish.

black desert online epheria sailboat

And start building

You can start building a boat at a leased shipyard once you have gathered all the necessary materials. The sailboat can be built at the level 3 shipyard located at the second floor of Epheria 3-5.

You will need as many workers as you can spare to shorten the building time as the required amount of materials is massive and the number of processes is over 3000. You need to send more workers from other cities such as Calpheon if you have a shortage.

black desert online epheria sailboat

It would be good to get a sailor while the construction is still on progress. You can get sailors from named worker NPCs in Calpheon by working on amity. There are 4 out of 7 amity workers that offer the sailor contract. The following list depicts the name and effect of each sailor upon initial acquirement:

Berocchio - Braking +1% Bravant - Speed +1% Tarte - Acceleration +1% Khaora - Turn +1%

black desert online epheria sailboat

It’s time to take to the high seas in style as new boats have made their way to Black Desert. Whether you’re looking for a quick island hopper or looking to carry enough firepower to fire a whole through a sea monster, there is a boat for you.

The Epheria Cog is a ship capable of high speeds across the high seas. The Cog has 1 inventory slot which is less than ideal for many who are looking to start trading across the open seas. It also lacks offensive options as it has no cannons on its deck. But where the boat shines is speed. The boat is able to zip across the water and get you from point A to point B faster than nearly any other ship in it’s class. The Epheria Cog is relatively easy to craft, however it does have a limited duration (much like Fishing boats, rafts and row boats).

But if you are looking to start your sea faring adventures with a boat that is more permanent, the Bartali Sailboat is an excellent option. While the boat has been in the game for a while, this update brings the ability to upgrade your boats, including a way to turn the Bartali Sailboat into either an Epheria Frigate or an Epheria Sailboat. If you’re looking for an excellent starting boat, the Bartali Sailboat can be purchased from Proix in Velia for 10,000,000 silver, which will give you access to a boat that can be repaired, boasts 3 inventory slots and also has a couple of player controlled cannons on board!

Player Controlled Cannons: A player must interact with a cannon in order to use it. This means that a captain would need to leave the wheel in order to fire their cannons.

Captain Controlled Cannons: Available on any of the upgraded ships after the Epheria Sailboat/Frigate allows the captain to control both the boats movement and the cannons at the same time.

While the Epheria Sailboat and the Epheria Frigate are known entities, they also have new upgrade paths to make your boats even better. The Improved Epheria Sailboat and the Improved Epheria Frigate are side upgrades that slightly improve your ship, and give access to Captain controlled cannons meaning one player can man a ship on their own if they wish. The improved versions of the Sailboat and Frigate are great ways to begin your bartering or sea monster hunting journeys as they boast more fire power and quicker reload speeds on the cannons. Both are also relatively easier to obtain than their bigger upgrades as they do not require special materials earned through bartering.

The Epheria Caravel is the big upgrade to the Epheria Sailboat. It has more weight, more cabins and most importantly, more Inventory slots than the Epheria Sailboat/Improved Epheria Sailboat. It is one of the best ships for bartering due to the weight and inventory slots, but also packs a punch as it has the same cannons as the Improved Epheria Sailboat. Upgrading to the Caravel can be tough, as it requires both items from sea monster hunting and a lot of level 2,3 and 4 bartering materials. You will also need to upgrade all the Epheria ship enhancements (Old Prow, Old Plating, Old Cannon, Old Wind Sail) to + 10, so getting the Caravel may take time.

The Epheria Galleass is the big upgrade to the Epheria Frigate. The boat is faster and easier to handle than the Caravel, but the down side to it is that it has less Inventory. It also packs an absolute massive punch with 4 captain controlled cannons (similar to the Improved Frigate), and has 30 cabins so you can have a much larger crew of sailors on board. This boat is perfect for those looking to go Sea Monster Hunting or pirateering across the high seas. Again, much like the Caravel, the Galeass requires you to sea monster hunt and barter in order to obtain the materials for the upgrade.

The Epheria Caravel can then be upgraded into the Carrack (Advance) or the Carrack (Balance) , and the Epheria Galleass can be upgraded into the Carrack (Volante) or the Carrack (Valor) . These ships require a considerable amount of resources from both sea monster hunting and bartering, but they are the highest tier of ships available at this time. All the Carracks boast 9 powerful cannons to lay siege to anything unfortunate enough to be in the line of fire. The Carrack (Advance) and Carrack (balance) offer huge holds capable of holding enough items for even the most complex of barter routes, and have massive weight limits. The Carrack (Volante) and Carrack (Valor) are massive war ships built more for speed, while also packing massive punches when it comes down to fighting your enemies.

With ships now having cabins, you can hire sailors to help manage your boat through your Voyage. Sailors add different benefits depending on their personality (Speed, Acceleration etc) and consume cabin space depending on their type.

In order to begin hiring sailors, you will need to complete the quest ‘ [The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye ’ that can be found in your suggested quest tab. Through this quest you will earn Sailing EXP, but most importantly for sailors is that you will be given your first sailor contract. This will then give you the ability to purchase more contracts to offer to other sailors.

Unlike workers who need to be rolled through a worker manager, Sailors are independent contractors and you will need to first find the sailor, then offer him a contract. Sailors appear as normal NPC’s in the following locations:

Velia

Inside the inn by Igor Bartali

Port Epheria

On the beach by the beached whale

Iliya Island

Next to the General Goods vendor on the island

Sailors are easily recognized as they have the sailor name that appears above their heads, as well as their characteristics. These characteristics will let you know ahead of time what kind of stats that particular sailor can offer. Once the sailor accepts the contract, he will make his way to your boat where he will begin his new life under your captainship.

To hire a sailor, you will need to first purchase a contract for 3,000,000 silver, then talk to the sailor that you want to hire. Once the sailor accepts the contract, he will make his way to your boat where he will begin his new life under your captainship.

Sailor Upkeep

Being at sea is a perilous life. Sickness is a very real possibility on the waves, and as captain it is up to you to make sure that your sailors are healthy and in working shape. Sailors have a meter called condition, which works very similar to the way you fed workers to keep working. Unlike workers, sailors need a healthy diet in order to not get sick. The prefered meal for sailors is Chowder, made through the following recipe:

Dried Pearl Oyster Flesh x1

Pepper x2

Pork x2

Milk x1

Teff Bread x1

This dish is enough to keep even the biggest of sailors healthy and in good condition. However if these resources are scare, Sailors can also eat Raisin Bread, available from Wharf Managers or Islin Bartali at the Lunar Halo Inn. While not as filling as the chowder, sailors will happily chow down loaves of Raisin Bread to keep their spirits up!

If a sailor’s condition reaches 0, they can get sick. While sick, any bonus that they apply to the ship will be deactivated, so it is imperative to keep them healthy. If a sailor does come down with sickness, there is no need to throw him off the ship in the middle of the Ross Sea. Luckily alchemists of Black Desert have developed the ‘Elixir of Regeneration’ which helps cure this sickness. Through simple alchemy, you can combine the following ingredients:

Mandragora Essence x1 (Purchased with Crow Coins)

Essence of Magic Power x1

Oil of Regeneration x1

Troll Blood x2

Grape x4

Once crafted, this elixir is enough to cure the sailing sickness which may plague your low condition workers!

Other Sailor Benefits

While you are out bartering and dealing with the NPC’s of each island, you can send out your Sailors to perform tasks. ' Supply ' option will restore some of the rations on board your ship while ' Explore ' sends the sailors off on the island to see what they can scavange. They can return with things like rations, repair or damage ships, or even find rare treasures. It does consume rations though, so it’s worth being smart about how to approach each individual island.

Remember that the May 27th Update for Black Desert Console will include new boats, the new life skill ‘Bartering’ and more! Make sure to check out the full update details once they are released.

black desert online epheria sailboat

Introduction

In this guide is designed for players looking to further invest in the Sailing lifeskill or are going for the Carrack. We will be covering sailing gear to use, sailing mastery, sea monster hunting, and a walkthrough of the sailing dailies (required to build a Carrack ship).

For beginner sailors, I recommend checking out our Ship Basics guide , and starting with an Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate.

If you are more advanced and pushing for the Carrack ship, start doing the Sailing Dailies quests in this guide as early as possible.

  • Epheria Frigate and Galleass

  • Bartering Lifeskill

If you haven’t already, I also highly recommend joining the Sailing Discord for lots of great resources and to find groups for the sailing dailies or crocodile hunting.

Getting Started with Sailing

To get started with sailing/bartering , you will need a character with level 50 or higher and Skilled 1 in sailing, as well as an Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate.

  • Sailboats are generally used if you would like to do Bartering , and the Frigate is for if you want to do sea monster hunting or other naval combat.
  • This questline starts with the quest  “Vigorous Velia“ and is available from your Black Spirit or Quest Log (O) under the Suggested tab
  • Sometimes players automatically complete the quest or start the questline without knowing, so check under your quest log if the quest is missing.
  • The questline can be done on all characters.

The questline takes a couple of hours to complete and you will need a ship, but the questline is very important to give you an introduction to bartering and will give you some free sailor slots. It is mostly running around and will introduce you to the Oquilla’s Eye Island. You will need to kill a few sea monsters, which won’t take too long.

Sailing Mastery

Higher Sailing Mastery will increase your ship’s stats (acceleration, speed, turn, break).

If you have 1500 points for example, you will have a 15% increase to all your ship’s stats (acceleration, speed, turn, break).

Increasing your Sailing Mastery can be useful if you need to reach high enough accel and break stat for the Ebenruth’s Nol on your Carrack. Otherwise sailing mastery is simply a quality of life improvement and not something I would heavily invest in. To reach high sailing mastery you would need to spend a lot of silver on the gear required, however if you have accessories from other life skills then you should use them for the ship stat increases.

Sea Monster Hunting

Sea Monsters spawn in certain areas in the Margoria ocean.

The Young/Hungry versions can also be found in the Epheria and Velia seas. Young and Hungry sea monsters are easier to kill but give less loot than the harder versions. Sea monster zones are shown on the world map.

When grinding sea monsters for Epheria Carrack crafting materials or blue-grade gear, I recommend using as many drop rate buffs as possible. You can use Kamaslyvia Blessing, Advanced Loot scroll and your Agris Fever to get as many materials as possilbe for your time spent. Agris Fever works on all Sea monsters.

Sailing Lifeskill Guide

Certain monster zones are aimed at providing different materials depending on your current needs:

Saltwater Crocodile Habitat Materials for Chiro’s Ship Parts (blue-grade gear)
Lekrashan Habitat
[Predator of Vadabin] Black Rust Habitat Black Stones for enhancing ship equipment
Goldmont Pirate Territory Sailor/Sailing/Combat EXP Gains
and Black Stones for enhancing ship equipment at a lower drop rate than Lekrashan and [Predator of Vadabin] Black Rust Habitats

Saltwater Crocodiles

In addition to the sea monsters above, there are also Saltwater Crocodiles which spawn east of the Haso ( Land of the Morning Light ) region. These sea monsters are much harder and I recommend finding a person to group with if possible. Up to two players can get loot from the Crocodiles. You many need to repair quite often, but is possible to solo them with +10 green Carrack gear.

The Saltwater Crocodiles drop items such as:

Item Name Use
used to craft [Guild] Sea Monster’s Spirit Pouch, Nineshark Chandelier, or Ocean Stalker Chandelier furniture

After being defeated, Hollow Maretta will not respawn for 1 hour.

Sailing Daily Quests

Sailing Daily quests give the best sailing EXP and materials that are neeed to craft the Epheria Cararack . I recommend joining the Sailing Discord server, to join other players doing Sailies Dailies runs. Players often host their own sailing dailies platoon, allowing players to hitch a ride on their Carrack while they complete the quests. This way all you need to do is stand on the ship and accept/complete the quests when you arrive on land.

Most sailies hosting platoons only do the Adult versions of the Ravikel quests unless stated that they will do both. The Adult version quests reward crow coins instead of the carrack ship materials. You may want to check with the host beforehand, or complete the Young version of the quests on your own afterward.

Total Quest Rewards per day:

  • Crow Coins x160
  • Oquiilla Coin x10
  • Pure Pearl Crystal x2
  • Deep Sea Memory Filled Glue x8
  • Bright Reef Piece x8
  • Moon Scale Plywood x10
  • Moon Vein Flax Fabric x3
  • Tear of the Ocean x1

There are 3 quests at Epheria, but they only gives sailing EXP and Origin of Wind x1 so you can skip these quests if you are only interested in Carrack materials. The quests require Sailing Beginner Level 3 to collect.

Sailing Lifeskill Guide

Sea Karma (Naval Fame) is family-wide stat that is seperate from your normal “land karma” and can also apply to players that are under level 50.

You can lose Naval Fame by attacking and sinking other player’s ships.

  • On ship hit: -50,000
  • On ship death: -200,000
  • On player hit: -50,000
  • On player death: -200,000
  • On khan-cannon hit: -3,000
  • On khan-cannon death: -30,000

Sailing Lifeskill Guide

  • Having negative Naval Fame will stop you from being able to use almost all Wharf Managers. You are limited to only using Kuit (Pirate) island to repair and resupply your ship.
  • If your ship is destroyed while you have negative Naval Fame, your ship gear can also downgrade.
  • If you have negative Naval Fame, you are unable to complete sailing dailes or use a Guild Galley.

The Naval Fame system heavily discourages the Pirate life, but if you are still drawn to it, then:

  • Avoid mainland wharfs and Terrmian Beach. These are patrolled by NPC guards who attack ships and players in water
  • Anchor your ship far away from wharf managers to avoid the ship being auto-collected into a wharf you don’t have access to

If you decide the Salty Seas are not for you, you can restore your Naval Fame by defeating Sea Monsters:

  • Lekrashkhan : 5300 Naval Fame
  • Large Battlehip : 1800 Naval Fame
  • Saltwater Crocodile : 1700 Naval Fame
  • Violent Sea Monsters : 1700 Naval Fame
  • Candidum : 1450 Naval Fame
  • Nine Shark : 1450 Naval Fame
  • Black Rust : 1450 Naval Fame
  • Medium Battleship : 1000 Naval Fame
  • Sea of Silence Ghost Ship : 1000 Naval Fame
  • Ocean Stalkers : 850 Naval Fame
  • Hekaru : 850 Naval Fame
  • Nineshark/Young Candidum/Black Rust : 850 Naval Fame
  • Small Battleship : 350 Naval Fame
  • Hungry Monster : 280 Naval Fame
  • Young Ocean Stalker/Hekaru : 280 Naval Fame
  • Margoria Phantom Ship : 0 Naval Fame
  • Cursed Pirate Ship : 0 Naval Fame

Beginner Sailing Guide: Ship Rations, Durability, Repair & UI

Beginner Sailing Guide: Ship Rations, Durability, Repair & UI

This is a beginner Sailing guide, covering basic ship maintenance and sailing UI. It helps explain ship Durability, Rations, and Repair, as well as Sails, Sea Currents, and Wind. All the things you need to keep your ship sailing the salty seas!

The Sailing Life Skill went through a major rework with the Great Expedition on 23 Oct, 2019 and has seen even more improvements in recent updates.

Sailing can be as simple as taking a beginner Epheria Cog boat out to sea to enjoy some fishing. But it’s also a Life Skill that is filled with complex strategy for those players who like to dive deeper.

Just conquer the deadly seas with our mighty piratey prowess!!

Fun Sailing Activities:

  • Sail to remote islands, hunting zones, and quests.
  • Sailor management and growth (They explore and find treasures for you.)
  • Collect a special sailling currency called Crow Coins to obtain loot.
  • Hunt Sea Monsters for booty and to complete Sailing quests.
  • Sail to World Bosses and battle them: Vell & Khan.
  • Discover Fishing Hotspots.
  • Harpoon (on Fishing Boat and Epheria Cog only)
  • AFK Fishing (All kinds of goodies and silver can be obtained)
  • Hunt whales with a Matchlock.
  • Sail to underwater gathering locations.

Beginner Sailing Recommendation

The main sailing questline is VERY beneficial. Don’t skip this before you start!

  • [The Great Expedition] quest line under the Suggested tab of Quests (O).

black desert online epheria sailboat

You will get 1 free Sailor from completing the main sailing questline.

Sailor Management occurs via any <Wharf Manager>.

Click on “Manage Sailors” to assign Sailors to your ship.

Select the Sailor and then “Board” button.

If you have multiple ships, you have to do this for each ship. They don’t automatically board every ship you take out.

Ship Summon & Teleport Button

Ship Anchor Button:

BDO Sailing Ship Anchor UI

Cooldown: 30 seconds. Must be at water surface to call ship. Other players will fall off your ship, if you call it.

The ship’s anchor button is extremely helpful for freeing a stuck ship and teleporting to your ship.

After registering a ship license at a <Wharf Manager> and checking out your ship, an Anchor Icon will appear on the top left.

Summon Ship:

  • LMB (Distance from ship 0-10m): Grabs ship’s wheel
  • LMB (Distance from ship 10-30m): Moves you to ship’s wheel
  • RMB (Distance from ship 0-40m): Call Ship
  • RMB: Find ship location (highlights the ship’s location with a beam of light, if you are more than 40m from the ship)
  • The ship ui also shows you your current distance from the ship.

sailing disembark button

Press the Disembark button on your ship to teleport back to the Wharf Manager.

If you don’t see a Disembark button, it means you are not close enough to the Wharf Manager.

Disembark button has a 5 sec cooldown.

big ship blocking port

When you can’t grab the wheel.

Teleporting to your ship when there is a ship already at that location, makes it difficult to grab the wheel of your own ship.

  • Option 1: Dive into the water, swim out a litte bit, then RMB to call your ship.
  • Option 2: Switch channels and hope there isn’t a ship blocking you on that channel too.

Sailing User Interface

When you board a ship, most of the control of the ship takes place at the wheel.

Press R at the ship’s wheel to mount the ship.

Unfortunately, you are the only one that can control the ship’s wheel to sail your ship, even if you are in a party with a trusted friend.

Friends have the option of traveling up the mast to enjoy the scenery. (I recommend this because it seems to prevent a glitch that can dump friends in the water while you sail.)

Ship Mounted Combat State: While mounted to the ship, a red Invincibilty icon appears over you. This means your character, but NOT your ship is protected from damage and CC. Once your ship is destroyed, you are no longer invincible and can be killed.

sailing ship wheel

Equipping Ship Gear

You can equip and unequip ship gear at the ship’s wheel.

Press F5 Mount Information at the ship’s wheel to see your ship’s info and equip cannons, figurehead, plating, and sails.

You can also view your ship’s stats like inventory, weight limit, and cannons.

ship gear stats inventory

Beginner Ship Gear

Ship Gear is equipped to improve ship stats to make sailing, barter, and sea monster hunting better.

Ship Gear Benefits:

  • Cannon:   Damage & Durability
  • Plating:   Weight Limit & Defense
  • Figurehead:   Speed & Defense
  • Sail:   Turn & Rations

For your first ship gear set, I recommend purchasing the green grade ones available in Port Epheria.

For more details: Ship Gear

epheria old cannon

When you grab the ship wheel, a Sailing UI will appear.

Wind Speed & Direction

  • Fold and Unfold ship sails
  • Cannon Timer & Cannonball Count
  • Ship Durability (Decreased through damage in battle)
  • Ship Rations (Decreased through Sailing Skills, Sailor Explore)

sailing ship interface

Ship Rations

Ship Rations are viewable as a yellow bar on the ship ui.

Rations are depleted when you use a ship skill, move the ship, or when you have your Sailor Explore an island for treasure.

Ship Rations are refilled via normal player foods, Sailor Supply/Explore, or the <Wharf Manager>.

Refill Rations & Cannonballs

You can refill ship rations and cannonballs at any <Wharf Manager>.

Make sure your ship is “Checked Out” at the wharf then use the Wharf Manager’s “Buy Supplies” option.

sailing ship buy supplies

Rations via Sailor Explore Sailor Explore option at a Barter NPC also has an RNG chance to replenish Rations. But Sailor Explore costs 100,000 rations and you may even get a bad result!

Rations via Sailor Supply A Barter NPC’s Sailor Supply option will give a very small amount of Rations. Don’t use this unless nothing else is available. If you use this, you can’t use Explore for 20 minutes.

Read our Sailor Guide for more info.

Supplying Rations at Sea

For times when you can’t supply at a <Wharf Manager>, you can use marketplace foods like Special Balenos Meal.

This is usually my go-to food since it’s plentiful on the marketplace and cheaper than other options.

The amount of Rations food will supply is shown in small white text on foods that have a Marketplace price. (Node Worker food, like Beer, is excluded.)

The amount of rations supplied depends upon the food’s grade.

Food Grade Rations
White 80
Green 100
Blue 240
Yellow 4000
Orange 22000

Ship Durability

Ship Durability is shown as a thin red HP bar. This is depleted through battles in sea monster hunting, PVP, and sailing along reefs.

Reefs are located next to the shores of Velia and Port Epheria. Ships get -10% Durability damage, upon entering reefs.

Ram skill costs 20,000 Durability with each successful hit. (Max 9) If one Ram skill hits 3 times, it will cost 60,000 Durability.

Ship Repair Items

It’s always better to use a <Wharf Manager> to repair Durability, but sometimes you don’t have easy access to one.

For repairing Durability at sea, use repair kits.

How to Use: interact with the ship’s mast.

Repairing Durability at the Mast

Move around the ship mast until the correct UI pops up.

Press F6 “Mount Repair” to use a repair kit to restore the durability of your ship.

If multiple types of repair kits are in your inventory, the first one at non-auto arrange state will be used.

How to Repair Ship Gear:  Whenever you are at a Wharf Manager select the Repair button along his NPC options bar.

The normal repair next to your ship icon only repairs Durability and NOT ship gear.

Sea Currents & Routes

There are special Sea Currents that will boost your sailing speed. (Also known as “Fast Current” and “Oquilla Current”)

Sea Currents are static and do not change like wind does.

When you enter an Oquilla Current, your Ship UI will change into a blue swirling mermaid spirit. Really!

Different Waters Impact Sailing Speed:

  • Oquilla Current: +36%
  • Deep Water: base speed
  • Shallow Water: -20%

Most water surrounding the main land is Shallow Water, giving a speed penalty. The difference between these fast and slow waters is 56%.

Cannon Damage:  Ram and cannonball damage are greatly increased by Cannon ship gear.

Ship Gear can be enhanced to +10 using Black Stones obtained via Sailing activities.

FocusFire Skill

FocusFire mode gives you a different cannon firing view and attempts to help the accuracy of your cannon shots.

IMHO Focus Fire makes aiming at and hitting the enemy much easier.

It has different mechanics and cannon rules.

Enter FocusFire mode by pressing Q or E

  1. BDO Epheria Sailboat: Blueprint, Materials, Quest

Crafting an Epheria Sailboat requires careful planning and time, but it's well worth the effort. As the best T2 barter and trade ship in Black Desert Online, the Epheria Sailboat offers more inventory slots and weight limit than the battle line of ships. Epheria Sailboat is a gateway ship to the most powereful barter ships available.

  2. Epheria Sailboat and Caravel Guide

To craft the ship yourself, you will need the Port Epheria Level 3 Shipyard (2nd Floor, Epheria 3-5). You will need a minimum of 13 CP for the Shipyard and a single worker. However, it is worth noting that you can send multiple workers to build your Epheria Sailboat, cutting down on the time it takes to craft the ship.

  3. Upgrade Epheria Sailboat to Caravel or Improved

Epheria Caravel and Improved Epheria Sailboat were introduced in the The Great Expedition Update on 23 October 2019. Both ships are upgrades from Epheria Sailboat and require an Epheria Sailboat to craft. "Captain" controlled cannons are a huge improvement over the "player" controlled cannons of lower tier ships, like Epheria Sailboat.

  4. BDO Epheria Sailboat vs Frigate

Epheria Sailboat has the added benefit of being less costly to upgrade and it's easier for beginners to gather mats to craft themselves. Epheria Frigate Battle Speeder. Epheria Frigate is the start of the fighter line of ships with superior cannons, speed, turn, acceleration, brake, and durability. T1 → Bartali Sailboat.
