Block Island Race Week Hits 100 Boats as New Fleets Join the 30th edition

Featured News , Regatta News , Block Island Race Week

block island yacht club

100 boats have registered for the 30th Annual Block Island Race Week presented by Margaritaville next for Summer 2023 and sign-ups show no signs of slowing as new teams continue to join the ranks across divisions. While two-thirds of the participants are veterans of the event, there are a few new fleets setting their sights on the iconic 5-day regatta including two new one-design fleets: the IC37 and Cape 31. Storm Trysail Club is preparing for a high turnout for the thirtieth edition June 19 - 23, 2023.

“We were pleasantly surprised how many people came out to Block Island in 2021 as we emerged from the pandemic,” says Andrew Weiss , 2023 Event Chair. “It was hard to plan with so much uncertainty then, but now we are able to really organize. We are busy working with class associations and talking with owners to get them the most out of 2023. Champlin’s is also rolling out the red carpet for us, we are taking over the resort for a great shoreside experience as well.”

Discounted dockage at Champlin’s Resort and Marina runs through Dec 31, 2022. Competitors must first register and pay on yachtscoring.com for a discount code to be sent to them.

One of those new fleets joining BIRW is the  IC37 class . Established in 2019, New York Yacht Club owns 20 of these Mark Mills designs for their biennial Rolex Invitational Cup , but their members can also charter them for other regattas. Along with a number of privately owned boats,  the IC37s are now considered one of the most competitive big boat fleets in North America - especially among corinthian sailors. In 2022, their five major events featured five different winners and their national championships has 24 boats on the line.

"We are thrilled to be heading out to Block Island with the IC37s for the first time,” says IC37 Class Governor and charter of Qubit , Chris Lewis . As this is an Invitational Cup year, we are hoping it will attract visiting teams from as far away as New Zealand and those Clubs who would like to practice for a week and enjoy all Block Island has to offer. BIRW is also an opportunity to sail with friends and family, something that these boats were designed to do by Mark Mills."

For the first time since the boats were launched, New York YC members can apply to event charter an IC37 the week. Contact the Yacht Club if interested.

Another fleet that is starting to captivate sailors in the US is the Cape 31. Another design from Mark Mills, the Cape 31 was originally designed for racing in South Africa. Now a group of sailors are in the process of establishing a US Fleet and will have 5 boats delivered to Newport in the Spring of 2023.

Class Manager, Martin Kullman says “We are looking to kick things off with the 2023 Southernmost Regatta, which will be the introduction of Cape 31 class racing to the US. From there we look to run our own event out of Stock Island in February before heading north to Newport for the major summer events and we can’t miss Block Island because it’s a chance for 5 days of great racing.” Anyone interested in learning more about the Cape 31s, should contact Martin.

Also on the One-Design circle will be the J/105s, J/109s (running their North Americans), J/88s, J/44s, and Melges 32s. However, one-design racing is just one of three circles at Race Week. ORC, PHRF, and Performance Cruising make up the other two-thirds of the event. More on them in a future newsletter!

It will be anyone’s game come June 19th on Block Island Race Week. Register now!

LESSONS / BOAT USE

BICS offers a comprehensive program of sailing lessons with US Sailing Certified Keelboat and Cruising Instructors with the goal of building the sailing knowledge, proficiency, and confidence needed for our students to get checked out in our boats so they can take their friends and family sailing without an instructor onboard.

BICS offers the US Sailing “Basic Keelboat”, “Basic Cruising”,” Bareboat Cruising”, and “Coastal Navigation” Courses in larger boats (not dinghys) specifically to each of our student’s sailing ability with inexpensive group lessons for beginner and intermediate sailors, and private lessons for any level of experience.

Our students who complete the Basic Cruising, and Bareboat Cruising courses are eligible to apply to US Sailing for their International Proficiency Certificate which is their passport to chartering a sailing vessel without a professional captain and crew almost anywhere in the world.

A brief description of each course follows:

The Basic Keelboat graduate will have successfully demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple day sailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions. This course is taught in two five lesson segments over a period of five days.

For a detailed course description, see:

Basic keelboat – us sailing learn to sail – beginner sailing.

The Basic Cruising graduate will have successfully demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew an auxiliary powered cruising sailboat, during daylight hours, within sight of land in moderate wind and sea conditions. This course is taught in conjunction with the Bareboat Cruising Course described below.

BICS offers Basic Cruising courses this winter while under way on a fabulous one-week family cruise / sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands. See link below.

Basic Cruising – US Sailing Learn to Sail – Beginner Sailing

This course is designed to provide the prospective bareboat charter skipper with the knowledge and confidence to qualify to lease a bareboat for charter in US, the Caribbean or the Mediterranean with US Sailing Basic Cruising and Bareboat Charter Proficiency Certification. The Course covers all the material in the US Sailing Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising course curriculum including planning a cruise, provisioning, cruising boat systems, (engine, galley, sanitation, and rigging) weather forecasting, coastal navigation, sailing in light and heavy weather, docking, anchoring, and emergency procedures.

The Course includes one day of classroom instruction and three days “under way” to a nearby cruising destination like Mystic CT and back to our base on Block Island. Prerequisite: US Sailing Basic Keelboat Course.

Bareboat Cruising – US Sailing Learn to Sail – Beginner Sailing

If you are an experienced sailor, you may also challenge a course to achieve the desired level. The US Sailing Keelboat Certification System is a series of sailing levels based on the natural progression of experience from day sailing to cruising and then extended passage making.

A certification candidate may, with previous experience and competency, challenge the required prerequisite levels by completing the written and practical examinations for each required level. Essentially, you will be taken for an on-the-water check out for the highest level of certification you are challenging. Pass the practical and then take the exams for the appropriate certification levels. BICS offers a “Challenge a Course” certification for all the above courses, to experienced sailors in a single day of the applicant demonstrating their proficiency and passing the US Sailing written test examinations.

Call BICS to make an appointment to Challenge a Course.

Game on for Block Island Race Week

Published on June 19th, 2023 by Editor -->

One hundred seventy-seven boats are entered for 2023 Block Island Race Week on June 19-23, with the 30th edition of the biennial event to split the fleet into 18 classes. With an improved forecast, competition is spread pretty equally among the ORC, PHRF, and One-Design Buoy Racing Circles, with the Performance Cruising Class attracting 45 boats.

The largest boat in the fleet is Hap Fauth’s Maxi 72, Bella Mente, at 74 feet looking to use Race Week as a warm up for some European races after a recent refit. The largest fleet comprised the 24 J/105s with thirteen J/109s all vying for their North America Championship as party of Race Week.

Back to defend their title as “Boat of the Week” is Jack McGuire’s J/29, Dirty Harry “but it’s a blank slate,” he says. “We have much of the same crew and got some new sails but it’s a new regatta.”

Depending on their class, there is a mix of buoy and distance racing. Still, all of the boats will race in the iconic Regatta Crafts Mixers Round-the-island Race – which can happen any day of the week but traditionally is the day the Race Committee foresees as the windiest.

These two moorings are "owned" and managed by CCA with responsibility assigned to the Rear Commodore of the Essex Station. Rhode Island is now requiring all yacht clubs to file an annual report showing mooring usage data and we are cooperating. The pennants now have red tags with QR codes taking you to the Essex Station website so you can enter the data. Or you can navigate to the website yourself.
