Boat: Hallberg Rassy 38
38. I already know many consider to be high quality , but how does the HR 38 sail? How does she go to ? Is she any fun to sail?

. But the Enderlein-designed HR's, including the 38, are not known to be very fast or very weatherly. The boats have longish keels and tend to wallow a bit. That's according to what I've heard and read; disclaimer -- I haven't tried one myself.

wouldn't go to or trot along as fast as more modern designs, but it's extremely hard to judge to what degree it won't do these things, and if it is passes the threshold of being fun. I found that boats (such as a 41 w/ hydraulic steering) which do not respond at the without lots of over-correcting, and which are extremely slow upwind because of the tacking angles, are just not much fun to sail, and was wondering if the HR 38 crosses the "fun" threshold, and is more of a chore to sail.

similar to the HR38, to a modern bulb boat, and it is a revelation. Never go back.

, sail some HR and it is really a question what you have in mind. Nasty sea and real on a 3 days tour: you will like the HR, it will perform constantly with a nice motion that you can handle for some days. You will feel safe which to me is important at sea. If you like to daysail in summer there are faster and funnier boats arround like a a X-35 . It is really up to the purpose.

sailing and , i had a but now a 14 ton aluminium one. you can not compare and you have to make your choice. all the so named cruiser looking fast and nice and they are fast with 4 sailors on board and expensive , but check your own style and what you like to do in future. back to the HR pls check carefully the teakdeck because although they are very solid built after 20 or 30 years you will need a new which will be a real expensive job to do.

My wife and I are in our early 30s and the point of the trip is to slow down and enjoy life a little more... so I think the HR will be the right boat for us, especially since it is difficult for us to afford a more modern boat without digging into our savings. Maybe we'll get that more modern boat when we are older.

Boat: Hallberg Rassy 38
a Hallberg Rassy 38, outfitting her, and did a 10 month in 2012-2013 from Seattle, WA down the West coast to . Here is my blog to prove it:

The boat was great and kept us safe and sailed better than I expected, however if I were to do it over again I would likely get a cruising or something like a 42. While we were always thankful to have a longer keel during bad weather and/or high seas, which kept the boat from pounding, I would off some bad weather/high sea comfort for a faster, more modern design and just sit a little longer at to wait out storms.

That said, after having gone cruising, I found that I obsessed way too much about what type of boat would be best. See if you can try a day or two in less ideal conditions on something... anything. If slamming into waves every 5-10 seconds where the whole rig wobbles is frightening and makes you want to get back to land, then maybe you should off some speed and point for comfort. If you can get into a top load machine, turn it on and go to sleep without any problems, then maybe you should trade off some comfort for speed.

Hallberg-Rassy

Named after 2 buiders: Harry Hallberg and Christoph Rassy who were never partners and were actually competitors until Hallberg’s retirement in 1972 when Rassy brought the two operations together. Harry Hallberg, (1914-1997) began his boat building career at the age of 14. In the early 1940’s he opened his own yard at Kungsviken on the island of Orust in Sweden. The first boat to be built in a series was the NORDIC FOLKBOAT. He also had good success with the KING’S CRUISER. By 1963, Hallberg had become a pioneer in serial production of fiberglass sailboats. He was the first successful builder of fiberglass hulls with wooden superstructure in a series. Christoph Rassy, originally from Bavaria, also began his boat building career at a relatively young age and had moved to Sweden in 1960. When he finally struck out on his own a few years later, When Hallberg built a new and larger plant at Elios, 10 kilometers to the southwest on the island of Orust, Rassy assumed ownership of old Hallberg yard at Kungsviken. At first, Christoph Rassy also built boats on a one-off basis. The first boat that became part of a series was the RASMUS 35, designed by Olle Enderlein. The first two were built entirely in mahogany and took one year each. This boat was in many ways ahead of its time. It was a pioneer long distance cruiser with a powerful engine and a center cockpit protected by a windshield, a type that had not been seen before and became a signature feature of the brand for many years. In 1972 Rassy also purchased Harry Hallberg’s yard in Ellös when Hallberg finally retired from the business.. The Hallberg yard at the time was also building series production fiberglass sailing yachts even of a similar size and type. It was also larger and far better known at the time, though it became far more so when the 2 names were combined.

HALLBERG-RASSY

  • FILES & DOCUMENTS

802 BOATS IN FOURTEEN YEARS

802 hulls of the Hallberg-Rassy 352 were built between 1978 -1991. The 352 was from start a substantial sales success. This was the first time a designer had managed to combine, in a 35 foot boat, a walk through to the aft-cabin with spectacularly elegant lines. Hallberg-Rassy 352 offered large-boat characteristics at a moderate price. She features a comfortable interior with walk through to the aft cabin under deck, a big engine, combined with pleasant sailing qualities and nice lines.

hallberg rassy 38 sailboatdata

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS

Continuous modifications have been made during the 14 years the boat was in production:

  • In 1980 the hull was raised a couple of centimetres allowing more headroom in the walk through and in the aft cabin.
  • From the beginning the Hallberg-Rassy 352 had the Volvo Penta MD 21 but production of this engine discontinued in late 1984 and was replaced by the Volvo Penta 2003 Turbo. A few boats were built with the bigger MD 22 engine, which was an option in the end.
  • 1984-85 the galley working area was improved, as well as the entrance ladder, which got separate. The cockpit locker drain was improved. The spring cleats were moved up to the top of the teak toe rail.
  • Around 1986 the skylight in the saloon was increased in size to give more natural light into the saloon. The locker doors of the saloon became louvered as on the larger Hallberg-Rassy sisters. Again the hull was raised, but only some cm, in order to get even better volume and headroom under deck.

hallberg rassy 38 sailboatdata

STANDARD AND TALL RIG

The boat was built with a standard and a tall rig. In the beginning only standard rigs were sold and in the end almost only tall rigs. The tall rig is easily recognised on the double spreaders and the standard one on the single spreader rig. Boats with in mast furling automatically became the tall rig.

hallberg rassy 38 sailboatdata

RARE HARDTOP OPTION

A very few Hallberg-Rassy 352 were built with hardtop. But not with the normal deck, but with a deeper cockpit, to create space under the hardtop, sacrificing the walk through under deck to the aft cabin. The aft cabin was then accessed only from the cockpit.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
