Mirabaud photo competition : These 20 pictures made it to the final

20 yacht racing photographers from 13 nations have reached the final round of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award 2023. The winners will be announced on Thursday (16 November) at the Mets equipment fair in Amsterdam.

A total of 144 professional photographers from 30 different nations had previously submitted their best sailing motifs for the most prestigious sailing photography competition. Two of the 20 best images of the year were taken by German photographers. Alongside classic photographer Tobias Stoerkle, Christian Gossmann also has a chance of winning the main prize. While Stoerkle sent in a picture from the 8mR World Championship off Genoa, Gossmann entered the competition with a strongly staged sunset at this year's Silverrudder.

  • 8mR: Great pictures from the World Eight Championships in Italy
  • 12th Silverrudder: Even without records - "The best Silverrudder ever"

As many as seven German photographers made it through to the first elimination round of the best 80 sailing images of the year. In addition to the two finalists, Felix Kling, Sascha Klahn, Christian Beeck and last year's runner-up Eike Schurr as well as Felix Diemer. The latter made it into the top 20 of the audience award alongside Gossmann, who is therefore represented twice. For one month, anyone interested was able to vote for their favourites among the best 80 pictures.

The winner of this prize will also be announced on Thursday at the Mets Amsterdam equipment fair. The pictures will also be exhibited at the World Sailing annual conference (13 to 18 November). There is a third award to be won: The delegates of both events will vote and select the so-called Delegates Award.

About the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award and the 2023 jury

Launched in 2010, the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award brings together the best yacht photographers in the world. No fewer than 150 photographers from 29 countries entered an image for the award in 2022. The winner of the main prize at the time was Spanish photographer Nico Martinez. The black and white image he submitted was taken during the TP52 World Championships in Cascais. The international jury voted unanimously in favour of Martinez, who is now part of the six-member panel himself.

He is joined on the jury by Swiss national Nicolas Mirabaud, Managing Partner of the Mirabaud Group. In addition, there are two experts employed by World Sailing: Sustainability Director Alexandra Rickham and Communications and Digital Director Scott Dougal. The committee is completed by two journalists. One is Laurène Coroller, who works for the French trade magazine "Voiles et Voiliers", and the other is YACHT author Tatjana Pokorny. She has reported from the last eight Olympic Games, covered all America's Cup editions since 2000 and all Ocean Races since 1993/1994, and is also a great admirer of yacht and sports portrait photography.

" We are delighted to see the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award continue to evolve. The event’s visibility and the return provided to yacht racing photographers will significantly increase thanks to this new partnership with the world's largest marine equipment trade show. We are pleased to contribute to this development ", said Nicolas Mirabaud, Managing Partner of the Mirabaud Group.

The 2023 prize giving will take place during a specific reception at METSTRADE on November 16 end-afternoon in front of members of the international marine industry and yacht racing photographers from all over the world.

Invitation to all photographers

Initiated in 2010, the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award gives professional photographers from all over the world the opportunity to share their passion for sailing and aims to promote sailing as a sport to the general public. Official opening of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award 2022

mirabaud yacht racing image

Initiated in 2010, the world's leading photo competition dedicated to competitive sailing is proud to launch its 13th edition. Professional photographers from all over the world are invited to submit their best image, taken between October 5, 2021 and October 9, 2022. The 80 best images selected by the international jury will be published on the event website on October 20 and the winners celebrated on November 21 (full rules available here: https://www.yachtracingimage.com/contest/rules.html).

New voting system and updated rules

A new voting system has been developed for the public, which is no longer based on Facebook as previously. Moreover, the rules have been modified at the request of many photographers who insisted on the fact that only a small percentage of photos of offshore regattas (Vendée Globe, The Ocean Race, Fastnet Race, Ultime Class...) are taken during the regattas. The same is true for most dinghy pictures: photographers have to stay away from the competitors, which strongly limits their creativity.  Consequently, the rules revert to their original formula, which stipulates that "photos must reflect the spirit of regatta and may have been taken at any time".

Invitation to all photographers

The Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award allows professional photographers to share their passion for sailing and aims to promote sailing as a competitive sport to the general public.

All photographers are cordially invited to the prize-giving ceremony, which will take place in public during the Yacht Racing Forum gala evening reception on November 21 in Malta in the presence of the main personalities of the international yacht racing community.

Mirabaud, a loyal partner

The international banking and financial group, founded in Geneva in 1819, is a loyal supporter of this competition to which it associates its name. "Since the beginning of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award, which was co-created in 2010, we have received more than 1,500 photos taken by nearly 300 photographers from all over the world," explains Nicolas Mirabaud, Managing Partner of the Mirabaud Group. "The photos bear witness to the rapid evolution of competitive sailing. They illustrate the latest technological innovations, thanks to which sailors are able to continually improve their performance. They also showcase the greatest players in the sport, and the human factor remains predominant. We are very proud to contribute to the promotion of sailing and the images that this sport conveys."

Last year, 126 photographers representing 24 nationalities submitted an image for the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award. The winner was French photographer Loïc Venance of AFP. More than 15,000 people voted for their favorite image, while 235,000 pages were viewed on the event's website.
