Standout concepts from the Monaco Yacht Show 2021

Revealed by designer Sam Sorgiovanni as the Monaco Yacht Show got underway, the futuristic, hydrogen-powered concept ZeRo features a “striking yet sleek” semi-planing hull form and a “restrained” superstructure. The concept’s propulsion package takes centre stage, however. Comprising of hydrogen tanks, fuel cells and electric engines alongside a battery storage system, the yacht is capable of travelling at high speeds with a “zero-carbon impact” on the environment.

Elemental Power and Elemental Sail

Abeking & Rasmussen , Tripp Design and Studio Liagre revealed two new concepts in Monaco; the 75 metre motor yacht Elemental Power and 90 metre sailing yacht Elemental Sail. Elemental Power has been designed with an efficient hull form and aerodynamic superstructure, while Elemental Sail 's exterior profile is characterised by a long waterline, a pair of 82.5 metre masts and extensive use of glass. The two designs make up the ‘Elemental Project’, which aims  to make “motor yachts more energy-efficient and sailing yachts more user friendly."

Lürssen ’s 98 metre, emission-free concept ALICE was inspired by Alice in Wonderland and spans five decks – including a fully-open main deck. Powered by fuel cell technology, the concept features a sprawling garden on the bow, contributing to the “wonderland” feel. Multiple al fresco dining and lounging areas are found on board, with the concept’s 17 metre beam providing amenities such as a floating glass-bottomed pool suspended above the entrance area. Meanwhile, the sundeck is home to a helipad, oversized sun pads and a circular lounge area aft.

German yard Lloyd Werft ’s 115 metre explorer yacht concept APEX features an exterior penned by Monaco based studio The A Group . The exterior is characterised by open spaces, especially the stern which contrasts with the “massive ice-going bow”, which is “almost four decks high” and can “cope with the heaviest weather”, according to the yard. Elsewhere, APEX can store two 20 metre tenders, while the 18.5-metre beam, results in 2,5000sqm of living areas.

Penned by Alberto Mancini and presented by Tankoa , this steel and aluminium concept Apache features a double-walled glass-bottomed swimming pool suspended in its bow. Owners can choose between two propulsion options; either twin CAT or MAN engines, both of which power the concept to a high speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles. Elsewhere, the beach club includes 125sqm space thanks to folding side terraces, allowing the area to provide an “extension of the outdoor living space,” according to Mancini.

German shipbuilder Meyer Group entered the superyacht market with its first yacht concept - the 150 metre ONE 50. Spanning six decks, the concept features a 20 metre beam and a large volume of 15,000GT. ONE 50 is designed to be powered by fuel cell technology and battery banks, with 25,000kW of electricity expected to deliver a top speed of 23 knots.

Superyacht Stories Reports on the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

Written By: Sam Watson

From the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, the most important event in the yachting calendar, our reporters on the ground reveal the key insights set to define yachting in 2023 and beyond.

MYS 2022 2

As the sun begins to set on the summer, the world’s yachting elite set sail for the French Riviera for the most illustrious event of the year, the Monaco Yacht Show. Since its inception in 1991, the event has become an important platform for those in the industry to share their news and previews while indulging in the glitz and glamour of the yachting lifestyle at its finest.

After a week on the ground in the principality of Monaco, our reporters reveal their key insights from the show, from the innovative shipyards making strides in sustainability to the creative concepts making waves across the globe.

Going green – past and future

As the industry continues to become increasingly environmentally aware, sustainability returned as a leading theme with the addition of a Sustainability Hub showcasing a wide range of green innovations. At a seminar on the first morning Giedo Loeff, Head of R&D at Feadship, Anders Kurten, CEO of Baltic Yachts, designer and naval architect Philippe Briand and Robert van Tol of Water Revolution Foundation presented “tangible improvements” in hull design, energy and propulsion, and the use of more sustainable materials. Besides yachts of the future, a major point of discussion was the feasibility of ‘green refits’ for the huge number of yachts already in existence.

Also driving the green energy movement was German shipyard Lürssen which revealed the results of its new Innovation Lab, which has spent the past few months testing and developing methanol fuel cell technologies. It also announced a new partnership with technology group Freudenberg, a world leader in maritime fuel cells. CEO Peter Lürssen said: “We both have the aim to bring fuel cells on board ships in the near future and revolutionise the yacht’s energy and propulsion system. The Innovation Laboratory will definitely bring us a step closer to a CO2 emission free Lürssen yacht.”

Lurssen MYS

Over in Italy, Rossinavi shipyard revealed it has commenced construction of a 43m hybrid-electric catamaran. Scheduled for delivery in 2024, Sea Cat will store and convert solar energy into electricity and is capable of transatlantic trips – 80% of an Atlantic crossing would be powered by electric energy, supported by 20% diesel generator use, reducing CO2 emissions by 40 tonnes.

Meanwhile in Austria, Silent-Yachts revealed the expansion of its range of solar-powered catamarans with the 36.7m Silent 120, scheduled for delivery in 2024. “This is the age of the super catamaran,” said CEO Michael Köhler. “Three great trends have converged to make our boats enormously successful. The rebound in yacht sales since Covid is already well documented. But add to that the growth of environmental sensibilities and the recognition that two hulls provide a far more luxurious platform for life at sea, and you have a recipe for unprecedented demand.”

Blue sky thinking

Love them or hate them, concept yachts are a key part of the show’s news every year and 2022 was no different. Concepts unveiled focused primarily on leading themes such as indoor-outdoor living and exploration.

One of the most talked about was Slice, an 85m superyacht concept by Dutch shipyard Feadship that “turns the inside out and the outside in”. Slice reinvents the way that light can be brought into a yacht. While most vessels feature large glass windows, Slice features a long strip of glass running from the bow to the stern, which allows natural light to filter down to all levels from above. It was created by Studio de Voogt, who designed several stand-out features including a multi-level pool, a 70sqm atrium accessed by cascading staircases.

Another light-filled concept was Italian shipyard Tankoa’s 68m T680 Fenice concept yacht. Created in collaboration with Enrico Gobbi of Team for Design, it was named after the Fenice opera house in Venice, Gobbi’s home city, and is elegant, bold and dynamic, much like its namesake. “This new project is the result of our desire to be recognised for who we are: a boutique shipyard able to offer a range of unique yachts designed by the best designers,” said Eva Orsi, President of Tankoa. “Enrico Gobbi highlights the unmistakable style, quality, beauty and know-how that goes into making our customers' dreams come true.”

Tankoa MYS

Explorer yachts made a return this year, too. Perhaps most excitingly, Dutch shipyard Heesen launched a 67m explorer concept in collaboration with British studio Winch Design. The yacht, XV67, creates a “new DNA” for the shipyard and is designed in response to demand from a new generation of customers looking to experience expedition-style adventure travel while indulging in the luxury lifestyle. “The new XV67 remains true to our original design intent: to create an exceptionally capable and beautiful bluewater voyager that will inspire owners to venture into new terrain,” the yard said.

XV67 MYS

Cruise control

One of the worst-kept secrets of the show came not from a shipyard but from a hospitality group, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. The company chose the event to showcase the launch of Four Seasons Yachts , a luxury yachting service set to sail in late 2025. The first yacht in the series was designed by Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri and will be 207 metres long and feature 95 suites and several dining and leisure outlets as well as fitness and wellness spaces across 14 decks.

“Four Seasons Yachts represents the next chapter of our long history of industry leading innovation, and a milestone moment for our company as we continue to capitalize on new opportunities to extend the world of Four Seasons,” says Christian Clerc, President, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. “Together with our partners at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD, we are creating something extraordinary that combines their expertise with what Four Seasons does best – delivering unmatched quality and excellence, surrounded by beautiful acts of service and love for our guests.”

Four Seasons MYS

Deep-sea exploration

While there was much to talk about on the water, waves were also being made under the surface. Dutch submersible company U-Boat Worx showcased its new two-person NEMO submarine, and revealed Nautilus, a diesel electric submersible yacht concept with five guest rooms. The “underwater yacht”, should it come to fruition, will be able to dive to a depth of 200m and reach speeds of 4 knots underwater and 9 knots on the surface.

U BOAT MYS v2

Also new in the world of submersibles is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between three industry leaders, Triton Submarines, Espen Øino International and Dark Ocean Deepsea. The powerful trio came together on a joint submersible project set to “quite literally reimagine subsea craft to change the way our deep oceans are explored”.

Speaking of the new Triton 660/9 AVA EO Edition, Espen Øino said: “Designing products and experiences that enable human beings to engage more deeply with the ocean environment is a core mission, both personally and for the company. This opportunity for Espen Øino International to further expand its expertise, while also contributing to the dramatic evolution of submersibles, is one I am personally intrigued by and has truly stimulated the team.”

Eyes on the East

Much of the superyacht industry has its sights set to the East. Leading yacht charter and brokerage company Camper & Nicholsons revealed the opening of its tenth bureau, in Dubai, with a Singapore office on the horizon as the business continues to expand.  Meanwhile USA-based Denison Yachting is set to open a London office. “Usually, people expand from the UK to the USA, but we are doing it the other way round,” said CEO Bob Denison.

Celebrating its 40 th  anniversary this year, Gulf Craft, a global brand in the field of composite-built superyachts unveiled plans for their new Majesty 160 due for delivery in 2025. Gulf Craft’s Chairman Mohammed Hussein AlShaali said: “The Majesty 160 will be our second largest vessel and will be a class-apart in its segment, catering to the needs and requirements of customers through its exceptional design, architecture and state-of-the-art engineering and technological features.”

Majesty Yachts MYS

Further developments in the Middle East were unveiled at a Superyachts in the Gulf seminar at Yacht Club de Monaco. Al Seer Marine, MB92 Group and P&O Marinas have signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint venture to develop the first superyacht refit and repair facility in the UAE (Dubai). Construction of the shipyard is scheduled for completion in 2026, with the joint venture offering its superyacht repair and refit services from 2023.

Supported by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, this is a strategic move in support of wider plans to position the UAE as a superyacht hub and become the winter yachting destination of the future.

Overall, the mood was positive among all exhibitors, with strong sales figures revealed for the last year and much optimism for the coming 12 months, despite ongoing political and financial issues in Europe. Time will tell how these impact predictions, although for now at least, it seems the future is smooth sailing.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023: A Round Up of the Top Stories

By Frances Flannagan

After a truly spectacular edition of the Monaco Yacht Show this year, we take a look at some of the top news stories from the event. From new launches, to concept designs, this year’s show featured a host of exciting industry updates.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023 undoubtedly saw a range of exciting updates for the industry; we take a look at six of the top news that was unveiled during the show. We delve into the announcement of the launch of the first Amels 80, the unveiling of two concept designs from Feadship and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, the reveal of Benetti's 85m project and Rossinavi’s 66m diesel electric ALCHEMY, as well as taking a look at Lürssen's 97m CARINTHIA VII following her 10-month refit.

The First Amels 80 Launched

On schedule to be delivered in 2025, the first Amels 80’s new hull and superstructure were spotted outside of her build shed. Described by Sean Bianchi, Partner and Head of New Construction at Burgess, and Naval Architect, as a yacht which will ‘stand out amongst her peers and set the benchmark for future yachts’, her launch was highly exciting news announced by the shipyard on the first morning of the yacht show.

Designed by Espen Øino, Amels 80 features a holistic and modern exterior design, in keeping with the Amels DNA. She also features sustainable materials and innovative hybrid technology, a key factor of the next-generation Amels' design.

‘The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered. She is a big ship, full of features, with an impressive interior volume. She is everything and more that you would expect from an 80-metre yacht. There is a sense of scale, and nothing is wasted,’ commented Espen Øino.

Her interiors are custom-built, penned by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, with a neutral and natural palette, allowing for the owner to add their own personal style. She can accommodate up to 14 guests, who can enjoy a 200 square metres sun deck, a waterside beach club which opens on three sides and a wellness area and spa, to name a few of the fantastic amenities on board.

Benetti’s Full-Custom Espen Øino-Designed 85m Project Announced

PROJECT LIFE, Benetti’s new full-custom 85m, is a welcome addition to the Italian yard’s megayacht fleet. Her exteriors have also been penned by Espen Øino, who has injected Benetti’s distinctive characteristics into PROJECT LIFE’s design: the capacity to invent new lifestyles, offering varied interpretations of this concept across the decks. All spaces onboard are designed with sociability in mind, for instance, the large revolving lounge that changes its focal point depending on the time of day.

Her interiors have been designed by Francois Zuretti, who has chosen a beautiful balance between the colours and the surrounding environment, with an expanded opening that allows natural light to enhance the spaces.

PROJECT LIFE is built with all the available technologies to help reduce consumption, including diesel-electric propulsion and integrated hybrid solar panels that collect solar and thermal energy to power appliances onboard.

A Look Inside Lürssen’s 97m CARINTHIA VII Following Refit

Following a 10-month refit by Lürssen at its Hamburg facilities, the results of CARINTHIA VII’s extensive refit were revealed at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, where she was presented to the charter market for the first time, represented by Fraser.

She was designed by Tim Heywood, regarded by many as one of the world’s first true mega yachts. Kept largely hidden from industry over the last 21 years, with her interior rarely seen, her introduction to the charter market has been eagerly awaited, as has the results of her refit.

Her new work includes redesigned exterior decks, new lounge and living areas and a new 12m/39’ pool and 90sqm air-conditioned gymnasium. Her interiors are sophisticated and elegant, with beautiful wooden flooring pervading the design and neutral beige and browns contrasted with cool-tone hues of blues and stunningly clean white stylings. She is a true masterpiece and an unmissable offering to the charter market.

Embracing Sustainability: Feadship Debuts Project DUNES

DUNE takes a significant step towards Feadship’s goal of Net-Zero superyachts, combining features that reduce energy demand with technology that eliminates emissions and increases efficiency. Each individual element of the design assists in reducing environmental impact, for instance, shading windows to reduce cooling requirements, however, when implemented together, they slash a superyacht’s environmental impact dramatically.

Inspired by the aesthetics of sand dunes, this vessel reflects the onboard lifestyle that today’s owners desire, with flexible, multi-purpose spaces, endless views, and a combination of sociable open-plan areas with cosy, intimate spaces. She has an asymmetrical superstructure with almost no straight lines, meaning that spaces drift into one another, furthering the notion of flow throughout the yacht, and the heavy use of glass seamlessly blends the interiors with the surroundings.

Her design, along with all Feadship concepts, is a true joint effort between Feadship, Studio de Voogt and the yard's Knowledge and Innovation department. With a wealth of expertise and experience across all collaborators, the shipyard’s concept designs are able to be of the highest possible quality.

AWARE, The Essence of Luxury, Presented by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design presented the 79.9m yacht concept AWARE at the Monaco Yacht Show, a ready-to-build, fully operational concept with a 1600 mm scale model. Her design combines proven technology with innovation and the use of the most precious and durable materials. At the forefront of this design is space optimisation, with an abundance of space on board, vast exterior decks and an unparalleled inside-outside connection,

AWARE has been described as the ‘Essence of Luxury’: a logical step in yacht design in which all space is optimised to give guests on board the best possible experience. Sander Sinot, Designer at the firm commented:

‘For the design of AWARE the focus is on maximising the space on board within the yacht’s limited structure. We designed open plan layouts for the beach club, lounges and exterior decks that offer inherent flexibility and ample space while reducing the number of decks.’

With exceptional features to optimise the outside areas, including a beach club with a three-metre high ceiling, the interiors have similarly been designed to provide ultimate functionality and a spectacular inside-out experience. She is a tri-deck design with an open plan pavilion on the bridge deck, allowing for unrestricted views of the ocean on all sides.

Rossinavi’s 66m Diesel Electric Motor Yacht ALCHEMY

Unveiled at Port Hercules was Rossinavi’s 66m M/Y ALCHEMY, a fully custom design by Vitruvius Yachts with interior and exterior styling by Enrico Gobbi. She features diesel-electric propulsion, propelled by rods to reduce the loss of energy between the engines and navigation speed.

ALCHEMY is an elegant tri-deck design with a focus on the outdoor areas and wellness aspects of the yacht. With a spacious central corridor, the forward owner’s cabin offers a clear view of the sea, creating a sense of openness in the design alongside a strong connection to the surroundings. A special emphasis has been placed on ensuring comfort on board, in particular the minimisation of vibrations, meaning that every technical and material choice has been considered to reduce noise and vibrations.

The atmosphere throughout this vessel is calm and elegant, with every single piece of furniture being bespoke. Enrico Gobbi commented:

‘Spa mood was the keyword for the interior design and exterior decor of this yacht; natural materials, soft colours, and essential shapes for the interiors. Soft indirect lights to 'wet' the simplicity of the forms, where the detail and construction quality had to emerge and characterize the space: 'detail makes the differences' this is the motto that we have followed more than ever in this project together with the owners.’

The 32nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show was as spectacular as ever, we can only begin to imagine the wonders that the 2024 event will hold.

"The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered." Espen Øino, Designer and Naval Architect

Kelly Monaco is leaving General Hospital after 21 years

Monaco's Sam McCall will exit the ABC soap this fall.

Sam McCall is on her way out of Port Charles.

Actress Kelly Monaco, who has portrayed the character of Samantha McCall on ABC's General Hospital since 2003, is leaving the show, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed.

The Soap Opera Network first reported the news on Monday. Reps for the actress did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

After nearly 2,300 episodes, Monaco will make her final appearance this fall. The Soap Opera Network reported that McCall will be "killed off" the show.

Over her 21 years on the soap, Monaco's has been nominated for a daytime Emmy and other accolades. She previously had been recognized for her 300-plus episodes on Port Charles .

Outside of her work on GH , Monaco is perhaps best known for winning Dancing With the Stars in its first season in 2005.

Just as Monaco is departing the long-running daytime TV series, several other actors with a history there have returned.

This summer, Jonathan Jackson , who first played Lucky Spencer back in 1993, returned for the first time since 2015 . Emma Samms, who's portrayed Holly Sutton on and off since 1982, including once when she seemed to come back from the dead, is scheduled to be back in September. Actor Rick Hearst also reprised his role of Ric Lansing, the half-brother of mob boss Sonny Corinthos, just this month.

The show launched in 1963 and holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running American soap opera in production.
