Moonen Yachts is a luxury motor yacht builder based in 's-Hertogenbosch in The Netherlands. The yacht building company focuses on constructing fully custom and semi-custom steel-hulled superyachts, including a Displacement Series and an Explorer series, as well as an all-aluminium Fast Yacht Series of semi-displacement motor yachts. Moonen yachts range from 20 to 45 metres (65 to 150 feet) in length over all and are excellent not only as privately owned vessel, but will satisfy even the most discerning yacht charter guest. Moonen shipyards' history takes us back to 1981, when in the medieval Brabant town of 's-Hertogenbosch the company was founded. Back then the company was building inland steel cruisers for predominantly local customers. The company quickly gained reputation for outstanding quality and service, which led to Moonen's expansion to the continental Europe , United Kingdom as well as East, becoming a leader in what they proudly call "pocket-size superyachts".

Building only three or four yachts per year, Moonen Yachts focuses more on the quality of each one of the vessels, rather than on the quantity in production. They strive to bring to life each client's unique vision of the ideal yacht, while maintaining the signature "Moonen look". Each yacht's interior boasts flawless handmade wooden joinery, designed, furnished and decorated to the owner's taste.

The combination of premium quality and advanced technology, guided by personal client input and the keen commitment of the Moonen crew, make every Moonen motor yacht a joy to own and an excellent investment.

A full range of refit work is also available for owners who wish to give new life to their superyachts. Moonen's construction hall of 60 metres allows refits to yachts with a length of up to approximately 50 metres (165 feet).

Moonen Yachts’ latest project, Y YN202 ,has arrived at the shipyard in Den Bosch and will now remain in the outfitting shed until her next milestone; the joining of the hull and superstructure, due to take place in early 2022. 

The 34m Moonen 110 is a classically designed Gentleman’s yacht that draws inspiration from the shipyard's popular builds of the early 2000’s; the Moonen 84 and Moonen 97. YN202 was made by René van der Velden in collaboration with naval architects Diana Yacht Design. 

Once complete, YN202 will have a classic navy hull and white superstructure. Her exterior will be complemented by her high end interiors by London designers Studio Indigo. She will feature a spacious five cabin layout for ten guests, floor to ceiling windows on the main deck, panoramic views and twin stairways from the main deck aft leading down to the swim platform. 

YN202 is on track for delivery in April 2023. 

Moonen Yachts is a yacht builder based in the Netherlands, and its first yacht was built in 1964 under the original yard name of De Ruiter. In 1981, the yard was renamed Moonen Shipyards. It’s launching its first vessel under new ownership: Alhena. In 2017 Moonen Shipyards changed into Moonen Yachts. With the help of strong vision, innovative technology and new designers, Moonen is once again becoming the market leader in 30m to 50m luxury yachts.

Hull and superstructure joined on seventh Moonen 122 Martinique

The steel hull and aluminium superstructure of the seventh hull in Moonen Yachts ' Martinique series have been joined at the Dutch shipyard's Den Bosch facility. Known as Project YN205, the yacht is for sale with delivery scheduled for April 2025.

Exterior design is owed to René Van Der Velden while the custom interiors are styled by the team at Hollander Yacht Design , who have already worked on their first Martinique project. Naval architecture was completed by longstanding collaborator Diana Yacht Design .

Built in high tensile steel, Project YN205 will include worldwide shore power connectivity and dual US-European domestic power outlets, optimised for side-boarding arrangements. 

The designers have opted for "serene" interiors featuring lightly grained tay and wall panels, white Jacquard fabrics and sculptural furniture pieces. Accommodation is across five cabins, including a main deck forward-facing owner's cabin. All cabins benefit from en suite bathrooms with crema marble and mother-of-pearl effect mosaics. There are further quarters for seven crew.

But owner customisation is still feasible at this stage of the build, according to Moonen technical director Nicky van Zon. "The great advantage of having our own in-house experts is that we can respond quickly and flexibly to owner requests throughout the rest of the build. We are a boutique builder with a personal approach. That is what makes building at Moonen such an enjoyable experience," he said.

The 345GT yacht can reach a maximum speed of 17 knots and a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Project YN205 will eventually join the existing fleet of Martinique yachts, which includes Brigadoon , Botti and Cocoon . This is alongside the additional two new Martinique yachts scheduled for delivery this year.

Moonen   Yachts was established in 1963 in the Dutch town of Den Bosch. In 2008, the directors of the company understood that the quality and reputation are also translated into an increase in demand for more, larger Moonen yachts and that the original facility in Den Bosch cannot support this demand. Moonen opened a second yard in Groot-Ammers where vessels up to 150 ft. can be produced. The original yard continues to be responsible for the design and engineering of the entire Moonen line, as well as the production of smaller, up to 115 ft. yachts.

Moonen Yachts is a unique company from two central aspects. Like many other shipbuilders, it places emphasis on quality, details, outstanding materials and technologies. But Moonen also adds and places much emphasis on two P’s. Price and People. This is the only shipyard that sees “competitive pricing” as a reason to purchase a Moonen mega yacht, and in their top ten reasons, this appears second, only after their promise to supply the customer with an outstanding vessel. The second aspect is the employees at Moonen, and these are indeed experts that work, uncompromisingly, to create cruising works of art. When yacht connoisseurs all over the world see a “Moonen”, they know that they are looking at a “Moonen”.

The shipyard now produces several lines. It’s “classic” line includes motor yachts from 72 ft. to the 129 ft. fast displacement aluminum yacht. The Caribbean line has four different models, the Explore line has five different models from 83 ft. to 148 ft., and the custom line includes the catchy phrase “We start all our custom builds with a blank page”.

A spec buying primer: Moonen builds 7th Martinique for 2025 delivery

DEN BOSCH – Moonen Yachts recently laid the keel of its 7 th Martinique superyacht since 2018. It is a 37.4m (122ft) project for which the yard has no buyer yet. Luckily, speculation building – starting on a yacht with no buyer in sight – is not as scary as it sounds.

It happens in the Netherlands a lot, both in the superyacht sector and the under-30m segment and is a significant reason why Dutch yacht building is so successful.

Spec-building gives a shipyard a head start. Moonen is a boutique yard that sells two boats a year ranging from 34 to 40m (112 to 131ft) a year. Australian owners Matthew and Louise Baxter acquired the yard in 2019 and provide solid financial backing.

Spec-buying shortens build time. When buyers knock on Moonen’s door, they can choose from several yachts already in build. When IBI talked to Commercial Director Victor Caminada, he had five yachts in build but no clients nearby.

Moonen’s 7 th Martinique, project YN 205, is listed at €25.5 million and due for delivery in February 2025. “We’ve started construction with shipyard financing to offer clients a shorter delivery time,” says Caminada.

He is confident he’ll sell the 345GT yacht. But as Moonen builds without a buyer, it chooses the color schemes, the materials, the designs, the number of staterooms, layouts, crew facilities etc.

The yard publishes a menu of half a dozen dates for design choices. The closer YN205 comes to its delivery, the fewer design choices buyers have. “I have never seen other yards publish these details,” says Caminada.

He stresses buying a yacht under construction limits choices. “As a keel is being laid, the yacht’s interior is already being built,” says Caminada. “Buyers should not think, ‘Oh, I’ve got lots of time still.’ The further the build of YN205 progresses toward delivery, the more decisions must be made to stay on track for completion.”

If you want to YN205, you have missed the June 15 deadline for the interior design concept. But you can still choose the whirlpool design and interior painted surfaces (Deadline: Dec. 11, 2023), the design of outdoor layouts (Febr. 5, 2024), the exterior paint scheme (March 35, 2024), the choice of flooring, upholstery, lighting and loose furniture (July 29, 2024) and the yacht’s name and logo (Sept. 27, 2024).

The existing facility in Den Bosch continues to build yachts under 35 metres (115 feet) and perform design, engineering and interior joinery for the full Moonen line.

Yacht rock: the new IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide boasts the brand’s first silicon hairspring

This year has been all about the Portugieser for IWC. At Watches & Wonders Geneva, the Schaffhausen brand unveiled a variety of new colourful dials and interesting designs for the collection – the highlight being the epoch-defining Portugieser Eternal Calendar . At Watches & Wonders Shanghai, the love continues, with IWC bringing the Portugieser back to its roots while also introducing its first movement with a silicon hairspring. For those that don’t know, the design of the original Portugieser ref. 325 from 1939 was inspired by deck observation watches – harking back to the glamour of seafaring and the Age of Exploration . The new IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide IW344002, however, is all about the glamour of recreational yachting, offering an innovative take on a tide indicator.

The original ref. 325 was IWC’s first oversized watch intended for civilians, measuring up at an enormous-for-the-time 41.5mm. The Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide is big by modern standards, too, measuring 44.6mm in diameter and 13.4mm thick. That’s bigger than most pilot’s watches IWC offers – but in this instance, bigger is better, as it allows extra real estate for its namesake complications. More on those in a second. In any case, IWC’s modern Portugieser Yacht Club collection has been home to larger, brassier takes on the Portugieser ever since its introduction in 2010, and the Yacht Club Moon & Tide follows in that tradition.

The Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide was first introduced in 2020 with the red gold ref. IW344001 . This model in stainless steel brings the heft factor down somewhat, while also featuring a better water-resistance rating (100 metres versus the ref. IW344001’s 60 metres). Otherwise, the new stainless steel ref. IW344002’s case features an identical design to its red gold sibling, flaunting a beautifully polished bezel, stout lugs and a crown guard that almost looks like two pushers.

Fans of 2024 Portugieser novelties like the Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night and its mesmerising obsidian black dial will be pleased to hear that the new Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide also sports this stygian tone. In fact, it’s one of only two regular-production Portugiesers to feature this combination of an obsidian black dial and a stainless steel case, the other being the Portugieser Chronograph.

At the 12 o’clock position, one can find a “Double Moon” moonphase indicator, which displays the moon phase as seen from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and is accurate for 125 years – not bad. Additionally, it also shows spring and neap tides. A spring tide (which has nothing to do with the season) is the greatest difference between how high the water is at high tide and how low it is at low tide. By the way, if you’ve ever heard the term king tide, that’s just an especially high spring tide. These typically happen at full moon and new moon. A neap tide is the smallest difference in tidal range. Make sense?

Speaking of tides, at the 6 o’clock position, you’ll find the tide indicator, which helps the wearer track the slightly shifting times for high and low tides. High tides occur roughly every 12 hours and 24 minutes – however, the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide compensates for this thanks to a reduction gear with three wheels, converting the hourly rhythm of normal time-telling into the slower rotation of the tidal disc by rotating the tide disc by 24 minutes between high tides.

In typical IWC fashion, both the tide indicator and Double Moon display are minimalist but highly legible, with subtle pops of contrast provided by lettering in red and blue breaking up the dial’s otherwise monochromatic look. The seconds hand is also tipped in red, while a colour-matched date window can be found at 3 o’clock. It’s classically elegant Portugieser fare.

The movement

The clever display of this Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide IW344002 is all thanks to the new calibre 82836, which is identical to the 2020 model’s calibre 82835 save for one key change: the introduction of a silicon hairspring. To tell the truth, I was surprised to hear that this movement is IWC’s first with a silicon hairspring, considering how prolific the tech is even among brands and movements far less developed than IWC. Of course, the advantages of silicon hairsprings are manifold: silicon is inherently anti-magnetic, thermally stable, doesn’t deform like a traditional hairspring, and doesn’t require lubrication, among other properties.

Some traditionalists say the use of silicon removes some of the artistry from watchmaking – and silicon hairsprings can also be more fragile than traditional steel hairsprings – but I won’t wade into that debate. IWC reckons it’s worth it, otherwise they wouldn’t have updated this movement. Silicon hairspring aside, the calibre 82836 also features IWC’s Pellaton automatic winding system (which utilises ceramic parts – are they sacrilege too?), with a confidence-inspiring 60-hour power reserve.

The bracelet

The Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide IW344002 comes mounted on a three-link steel bracelet with a butterfly clasp. While we’ve seen bracelets of this design offered before on Portugieser models, it’s the first time a bracelet has been offered on this complication, as the ref. IW344001 came on a rubber strap.

The verdict

Most people who are actually part of yacht clubs probably don’t sail their own boats, but there’s something highly appropriate about having complications like a tide indicator and moonphase on a Portugieser Yacht Club. Being stainless steel, it makes it more suitable for ocean-going than its previous red gold incarnation (not that you’d really call this a tool watch). The addition of a silicon hairspring is a nice touch – it’s only something that real enthusiasts will get excited about, but it’s nice – but the big selling point for this watch in my opinion is that its movement compensates for the discrepancy between the tide cycle and the normal 24-hour cycle. This makes it a more user-friendly experience than other tide-tracking watches like the Baume & Mercier Riviera Tideograph .
