Sheathing helps to make the hull impervious to water and other marine borers. But first, you need to prepare the hull using a rotary sander. To make it as smooth as possible, use light, sweeping strokes. This is a very dusty task so be prepared to wear a facemask and safety goggles. 

Install the Bulkheads

Next is installing the plywood bulkheads . You might need to call in friends to help turn the hulls or use a crane. In this step, you will need to laminate the hull sides on the molded hull panels and bond them above the bulkheads. Ensure the bulkheads are snug and sealed in place.

Construct the Interior Structure

Over the next couple of months, the boat work will involve joining the hulls together with the beams that you had made back in the garage. Then, install the cuddy cabin, decks , and the cockpit . Soon the boat will start to take the shape of a catamaran.

Next, proceed to construct the major structural components such as stairs, hatches, mini-keels, and the interior. Then comes the work of fairing the boat, which is quite labor-intensive. 

Finally, it’s time to apply primer on the catamaran boat and start the paintwork. Before painting the boat, you will need to do additional sanding to finish off the two layers of primer as well as fill all the pinholes. Since it’s a large boat, the catamaran has lots of surface area; thus, the sanding could get extremely exhausting—mentally and physically—at this point.

The painting can take a while, too. The hulls are the easiest to paint, but the topsides, non-skid, as well as masking and prepping could seem never-ending.

I am sending this message to any catamaran creator – designer to make those who have the opportunity and the intelligence to want to know about my innovative idea which will finally upset the market much richer. An idea that will totally change the concept of sailing, navigation and save so much worry!! All I would ask for is a small percentage of each sale of the new product. To be able to make me produce one when I have enough!! It is certain that like that, you just want to tell me: come on Mr. Lessard give us your idea but do not take your word to help me in return! But, if you are the kind of man to have only one word and maybe have a proof of your good faith if the realization of the project would make it… I will be very happy!! Giving it to everyone wouldn’t bother me either…. all I would like is to be able to find flax fiber (too expensive carbon) to be able to try to make my catamaran myself. Because not rich! DUFLEX PRE-LAMINATED PANELS

DuFlex pre-laminated panels are the main and most important material used in our kits, predominantly in the flat panel designs, however they are used in Strip-planked designs also, though to a lesser extent. These panels are 2400mm x 1200mm and are CNC routed to speed up build time on our Wildernes X Series, as well as some of our power designs. For internal furniture, a paper honeycomb core is used instead of the end-grain balsa wood core that is used for main structural areas. The use of this is purely to save weight in the shell and therefore produce a faster, more responsive catamaran.

Schionning Catamaran Kit Materials contain Kinetix Laminating Resin & Hardener Kinetix Laminating resin is used on all of our designs and is used for laminating the strip-planked areas, so round-bilge designs will use it more often whereas our flat panel designs not as much.

Fibreglass Tapes (Double Bias) These double bias fibreglass tape rolls are used for the joining of panels in our flat panel designs, or in round-bilge designs to a lesser extent. Anywhere that DuFlex panels need to be joined, tapes will be used. The smaller rolls come in different widths for ease of use and to save time on cutting larger rolls of cloth.

Carbon comes in unidrectional and double bias, however is much more expensive than standard fibreglass (as one might expect). Schionning Designs Catamaran Kit Build Process - Step 1 The first step to building your dream catamaran begins with a strongback - this is a square frame used to position the temporary frames that will be used to form the hull shape. This frame will be set up and must be square and accurate, a string or laser level can be used to achieve this.

The forebeam is now installed along with the striker attachment fitting, as shown above. The bridgedeck is installed shortly after and taped onto the bulkheads with webs installed, this now completes what is a quite stiff and strong platform to work on.

Now that the bridgedeck is in place, the forward webs and dash will be fitted. At this stage, all furniture and internal work begins, with the main panels left off for ease of access when working.

If you chose to receive blank panels, this is the period in which your internal living areas are to be built. This construction uses paper-honeycomb Duflex panels, as these are superior in weight when used non-structurally. Cabin soles, engines and daggerboard cases are also now installed.

This may not seem important but when working with a material for an extended period of time, the small things make all the difference.

BALSA END GRAIN (150 kg/cubic metre)

Balsa  has very good values and we can produce a shell using a very light laminate. It will be very stiff and very resilient to fatigue.

It has exceptional qualities including very high compression strength, extremely good sheer capabilities and fantastic sheer stiffness.

Compressive strength is the resistance to collapsing when pressure is applied perpendicular to the surface as when pushing directly onto the material with the point of your finger. Balsa is far stronger than Foam (80kg/cubic metre) in compression.

Balsa is also very strong in shear. This is when the core sample is held flat between your hands, one hand slid one way and the other slid the opposite way, when the core tears through the middle the core has failed in sheer. The amount of stretch you feel before the core shears is shear stiffness. To compensate for sheer weakness the core is made thicker. So 13mm Balsa may be equal in sheer to 19mm Foam.

(80 to 200 kg/m³)

There are many boats sailing that are built from foam as it’s mechanical properties are good for boat building.

  • Initially one would expect this cat shell to be lighter as it is ½ the weight of Balsa. We do have to compensate for its weaknesses and will then add to the reinforcement the reinforcement on the outside to spread that compression load over more core and need a triaxial type weave to compensate for the veneer content that runs fore and aft on the Durakore.
  • Secondly, we need to increase the Core thickness to compensate for the shear value, usually neutralizing the weight advantage.
  • We only use structural foam core that is closed-cell and cross-linked.

The end result using foam core amounts to a very similar total boat weight. Professional builders can achieve a good result but usually use vacuum bagging and very good molds to achieve this.

Secondary Issues

Balsa can absorb water. It needs extreme neglect to rot (very unusual). Water soaks along the end grain quickly. It travels very slowly across the grain. We use balsa under the waterline especially because of it’s high compression strength for beaching etc. any core type must be sealed. Damage to all cores results in the same sort of repair. Notice a damp spot remaining when drying out to anti-foul… simply grind back the surface glass exposing the core, dry it out and re-glass – it’s that easy.

Timber cores are cheaper than Foam in most cases.

A light, high tech cat returns a far better (often 2 – 3 times) re-sale than lower tech materials. Often saving $10,000 on materials initially, loses $200,000 on re-sale – a serious reality.

Our boats can be built using Balsa, Foam or Western Red Cedar. Combine strength, stiffness, lightness and cost, with ease of use – it just makes good sense!

Coastal Trekkers To Long Term Live Aboards

From the car trailable Tiki 21 - winner of the 1982 Cruising World Design Competition, to the Tiki 46, a spacious ocean cruiser or charter boat, the TIKI range offers car trailable coastal trekkers to long term live aboards . Although a Tiki 21, a very popular coastal trek design, has circumnavigated, we would not recommend this for everyone! A number of Tiki 26s have also made ocean crossings, but again this is only for the experienced sailor. The larger TIKI designs of 30ft and over are craft capable of longer voyages and ocean crossings. They are designed to be less costly to build by using appropriate wood/epoxy technology and by eliminating, wherever possible, expensive metal fittings common to modern yacht design.

On the larger TIKIs the 'Deckpod' offers sheltered steering and the 'Stern Ramp' provides easy access to and from the water. The TIKIs are boats you can work and live on. The Wharram approach goes beyond simple boat design - the concept of 'Flexispace' puts emphasis on not just the physical living area, but also the 'mind space' of those on board.

The Hitia Designs are the perfect beach catamarans . They are 'coastal trekkers' and cater for those who do not want a craft for long distance or "blue water" sailing, but would like to be able to trail their boat to varied interesting coasts and lakes. Their easy economical construction, stability and speed makes for affordable weekend adventure boats . The Hitia 14 can be carried on the roof of your car and fits on the deck of a larger boat. The Hitia 17 has more stowage space and room for a tent on deck for longer excursions. These boats are ideal for small adventures and coastal treks.

The MANA kit is sold with all the plywood cut out by CNC cutter and pre-coated with epoxy, so building the boat at home will be a bit like assembling a flat-pack . All the parts slot together perfectly so a hull can take shape in a day. Building from such a kit takes away the worry of measuring and cutting all the boat parts , which can be quite daunting to many first time builders and saves a lot of time in the early stages of building. In designing the MANA, we looked sideways into the world of camping and have combined the innovative CNC cut "flat pack" boat-building concept with the philosophy of outdoor living to create the unique MANA camper-sailer, specifically designed for trailer sailing.

The ply parts will have a first smooth coat of epoxy already applied, cutting down time in coating and sanding, so within a short time you will be able to assemble the hulls and see the boat you are building. As she is built from a pre-cut kit, we have been able to give the Mana more complex and beautiful shaping, giving her more interior volume than the Tiki designs.

The More Evocatively 'Female' Of The Wharram Designs

From the Coastal Trekking Pahi 26 to the impressive 63' flagship of the Wharram fleet 'Spirit of Gaia' - the PAHI shape is more evocatively 'Female' than the Classic Wharram designs. They are a different visual/sculptural approach to the basic design elements inherent in the Classic Designs. Constructively, they are simpler to build, using epoxy fillets instead of more difficult wood joints . They are designed to use quick growing softwood plys, coated and glassed with epoxy to achieve a durable finish. The PAHI designs were the first to use rope lashings to attach the crossbeams, giving a shock absorbing effect, without the need for metal fittings. 'Pahi' in Polynesian dialects means 'ship'.

The Pahi 42 'Captain Cook' design set fresh ocean cruising standards when she was designed in 1979. The Pahi 63 was designed in 1986 and launched in 1992 to become the new ocean going flagship for the Wharram family. During the construction of 'Spirit of Gaia' many unique new solutions to plywood and epoxy building methods were developed, which were later incorporated in the larger TIKI and ISLANDER designs.

The Ethnic designs have been a new development at James Wharram Designs since James and Hanneke sailed extensively in the Pacific. With everything self-made these boats are lower cost to build . They cater for those who want a "traditional" Pacific sailing craft, built using appropriate modern materials and methods, but without trying to Westernise them. These designs arose after requests from Pacific Island peoples for James to design craft to overcome shortages of "traditional" building materials, but which closely reflect the cultural and ethnic origins of these craft.

The Early Wharrams - Sturdy and Stable

The early 'Wharrams', now known as the Classic Designs, are recognised as beautiful, safe boats - easy to build, and easy to sail . Many anchorages around the world are graced by these Classic Designs, and of the seventeen drawn between 1957 and 1976, nine are still available, from the 16ft Maui to the 51ft Tehini. They were the first range of Wharram catamarans, designed in the 1960s and 70s, based on the sea experience of James Wharram's pioneering ocean crossings. They are sturdy, very stable, but relatively basic in design. They are built using simple plywood construction over a backbone and bulkhead frame .

For over forty five years the Bruce Roberts Group, with input from many designers, shipwrights, builders and owners, have been drawing detailed boat plans for sailboats and powerboats with the DIY boat builder specially in mind. These boatplans & designs range in size from 5.8 mts to 20 mts and can be built in many different materials.  We have boat plans & designs for building in steel or aluminium in either multichine, radius chine or round bilge hull forms.  Most boat plans & designs are also in fibreglass using either c-flex, foam sandwich or single skin hull construction methods or in cold moulded ply or strip plank using what is commonly know as wood epoxy boatbuilding. Thousands of boats marketed as Roberts designs have been built in backyards and successfully sailed around the world.

Roberta Jean 43 - The RJ 45 is another member of our Moxie family of interior designs (see 'Dream Yachts' below). However in terms of hull form, Roberta is a larger version of the robust all-ocean Buster 30 (below), and very much in the lineage of our Tug-Yacht designs from the 25' Boojum to the 38' Nidaros (see 'Tug Yachts' below). A covered aft deck provides shelter for outdoor lounging and the interior has all the amenities needed for a couple to live aboard for extended periods. Hull structure is optimized for aluminum. Roberta 43 - Yet another member of the Moxie family of interior designs (see 'Dream Yachts' below). As with Moxie, the covered aft deck provides outdoor living, and the interior is perfect for a couple to live aboard. Coaster 40 - A very roomy family trawler-yacht designed for extreme economy of construction, maintenance and operation. Two private staterooms. Buster 30 - Robust, rugged, and ocean capable, this little trawler-yacht will be one tough little traveler! I call them 'dream-yachts' after their inspiration, the classic 'Dream Boats' of the 20's and 30's that plied the waters from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska. Seaworthy, yet very easily driven. Renegade 50 - Renegade is very nearly the same as the 49' Quinn, and in my view equally ideal... Same layout, with just a bit more headroom, more displacement, slightly greater beam for a bit of extra room inside, and subtly different profile... All other features are identical to the Quinn 49. Quinn 49 - Another member of the Moxie / Renegade family, Quinn is my own ideal type of motor yacht for simple, efficient coastwise cruising. As with Moxie, a classic gracefulness prevails. The covered aft deck is large enough for outdoor living, and the interior has all the amenities required for a couple who wish to live aboard for extended periods. As with Greatheart 48, the intent was to get the largest boat still able to be driven by the commonly available 4 cylinder marine diesels. Hull structure optimized for aluminum. Boojum is a World Cruising Trailerable Tug Yacht. Bilge keels for trailering and for taking the ground gracefully. If designed for high speed they must still be light, and must be given considerably more power... Twee Schoenen 35 (Power Cat) - A tunnel hull aluminum power catamaran, intended as a live-aboard cruiser. Sufficient fuel is provided for long passages at reduced speed. Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices. 60' Power Trimaran - Aluminum, plywood or GRP... any of those materials would be suited to this power trimaran. A highly interesting design study having great potential. The original request was for a power tri with "traditional" styling. This is so-far just a concept design which was done to illustrate a vessel type that has considerable merit for long range cruising. Efficient passagemaking in spades... Why not...?   The Pram - The pram hull form has the most carrying ability within the least length. Being flat bottom, these sailing prams take the beach gracefully, and they are easily stowed. The Spirited 400 'Power' is a semi-displacement power cat with sleek lines and light weight structure. For those who like 'turn-key' cruising this highly efficient design is always in readiness for a quick getaway. The slim hulls run easily through the water and provide a very comfortable ride even in rough conditions. This design can accommodate most luxury appointments for an apartment-like finish and experience. 

Cockpit The acess into the cockpit is via the aft hull steps with the bottom step being extra long and in effect acting as a duckboard ideal for entering/exiting the water when swimming, diving or unloading the tender. The cockpit is open plan with a wide curved seat aft and additional seating either side. The open plans layout offers the option of a clear area or space to set up a table and chairs when required.

Bridgedeck Internally this design has the galley to Starboard against the aft bulkhead; opposite this is a generous sized seating area. The bridgedeck cabin is high volume and accommodates a dedicated steering console area with comfortable seat and dashboard design. This space works cohesively between all areas and provides a hub for the living areas while underway or at rest.

Cabins Entering the hulls there are three private double cabins, the two forward are queen sized and have the option of an ensuite or a walk-in-robe leading forward. All areas are spacious enough for comfortable use with all berths allowing for generous sitting headroom. Head and shower amenities are situated aft in the Port hull with a dedicated engine bay behind the separate shower; the Starboard engine is located below the aft double berth.

Power The engine size is flexible due to the semi-displacement hull design which is efficient at any speed range. The recommended engine size begins at 50hp through to a maximum of 125hp in a shaft-drive installation.

On Deck The surfaces are flat and level for safe clutter-free footing from the cockpit moving forward to the foredeck. The foredeck flows seamlessly onto the trampolines and also level with the forebeam. Access to the flybridge is from the cockpit on the Starboard side. The flybridge is the perfect outdoor social setting with excellent 'birds-eye' vision of the horizon. An optional second top steering station can be fitted for full control whist enjoying this area and is also advantageous when docking from this position. 

Performance Expected speeds depend on engine size but cruise speeds will be effortless in the mid teens even with the smaller engines. Top speeds are in the high twenties with the large engines and in the high teens with the smaller sized engines. Given the fine entry hull design this design will cut through the water and offer a comfortable level ride in most conditions.

After a youth messing around in all sorts of boats on the Thames, I gained my degree - a BSc (Bachelor of Science) in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Newcastle University in 1974.

Straight after University l worked in the design office of McGruer & Co. Scotland for 4 years - famous for high performance racing /cruising yachts beautifully crafted in wood (cold moulded as well as conventional clinker and carvel). l then became Technical Manager at D.M. Russell Marine - formerly Jas. A. Silvers yard just up the road at Rosneath, for 5 years - famous for their motor yachts - this period found me sailing/cruising in all sorts of craft around the coast of the UK and regular racing in everything from Dragons to the IOR fleet on the Clyde.

Safe Haven T-2000 Voyager Luxury Catamaran

Back in April, Storm Kathleen slammed into the west coast of Ireland as a fearsome Force 10 gale, packing 70 mph winds and 15-foot waves. While locals sandbagged their homes and prepared for the worst, Frank Kowalski decided it was a swell day for a boat ride.

Safehaven Fast Power Cat

Evolved from Safehaven’s 75-foot XVS20 monohull launched in 2018, Kowalski used his expertise in building commercial, work-boat power catamarans to design the twin-hulled T-2000 Voyager to offer speed with stability.

“The stability in beam seas is what’s key here,” he says. “While we were out recently in a Force 8 with 40-plus knot winds and 12-foot seas, we were able to stop and leave the boat to drift while we retrieved a drone. It just took the waves on the beam with ease. In a monohull, it would have been rolling so badly you couldn’t have stood on the deck.”

Then there’s the sheer velocity that comes with twin, scalpel-thin hulls slicing through waves. With the T-2000’s pair of 1,550 hp MAN V12 diesels driving France Helices SD5 surface drives, the Safehaven can hit a top speed of 57 mph.

“It’s just the most amazing sight, standing on the stern, watching these huge roostertails behind,” Kowalski adds. “We’ve also incorporated retracting swim platforms so you can see the props spinning on the surface, plus valved exhausts that switch between silenced and straight-through. The noise from those V12s is sensational.”

His hull No. 1 demonstrator boat has all-diamond-quilted marine leather, well-finished cabinetry, colored LED lighting, and below-deck accommodations for six in three cabins. Hull No. 2—already sold and due for completion in the next 18 months—will up the luxury factor.

“It’s going to a client in the Middle East who plans to use it for just himself and his wife,” says Kowalski. The client has specified a full-width owner’s suite with a central, king-size bed and oversized his-and-hers bathrooms and closets in each hull. “He also wants to go fast— very fast,” Kowalski continues. “So we’ll install twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s, again with surface drives, and a central hydrofoil to reduce drag. The plan is for it to hit a top speed in excess of 69 mph.”

The new T-2000 is also designed to go the distance. With the 2,900-gallon tanks, it has a range of more than 1,000 nautical miles at 34.5 mph, and 1,700 nautical miles at 18 mph. Throttle back to 12 mph and range increases to 3,000-plus nautical miles.

Much of this is down to the yacht’s symmetrical, semi-wave-piercing hulls, made of a carbon-fiber-composite construction, with inverted lower bow sections and a double-chine arrangement that projects spray clear of the boat. The hydrofoil in mid position also means that, at speed in calmish seas, the T-2000 rides with half its hull length out of the water.

To eliminate waves slamming into the bridge deck windshield, Kowalski moved the pilothouse farther back. It also makes for a sleeker profile, giving the T-2000 the look of a single-hull sportsyacht.

The entire helm area gets flooded with light courtesy of the four-panel, angled windshield and quartet of fixed skylights above. To see the boat’s hydrofoil in action, the bridge has a glass panel in the floor that’s also designed for viewing marine life below at night. Most of the windows have half-inch-thick toughened panels to shrug off cascading water. 

Safehaven T-2000

In finer weather than typically found on coastal Ireland, the T-2000 has a small flybridge with a helm station and sun-lounge area up top, plus a covered stern cockpit with sofas and table for alfresco dining.

This storm-tested, metallic-red demonstrator is available for around $3.35 million.
