Sibenik Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Sibenik yacht charters

Here are some beautiful sites in Sibenik for you to explore during your next yachting escape through Croatia:

The Cathedral of St. James

One of the most important sights in Sibenik, the Cathedral of St. James – the construction of which lasted from 1431 to 1536 – is considered, today, to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Made of limestone and marble, this cathedral underwent two key phases of construction; the first, by Italian masters, and the second, by world-famous Croatian sculptor, Juraj Dalmatinac. To commemorate Jurac’s work, the greatest Croatian sculptor of the 20th century, Ivan Mestrovic, sculpted a statue of Jurac Dalmatinac on the same square as the cathedral.

St. Michael’s Fortress

Offering idyllic views of Sibenik, Krk River, and the rest of the Adriatic islands below, St. Michael’s Fortress is one of Sibenik’s most raved-about sites. A testament to Croatia’s varied history, this Medieval fort dates as far back as the 13th century, with modern preservation elements added to convert the historic site into a summer concert venue.

St. Francis’ Church

Dating back to the end of the 14th century, this grandiose church is adorned with plentiful Venetian baroque paintings, fine frescoes, and a one-of-a-kind, painted wooden ceiling created in 1674. This church is the principal shrine of St Nikola Tavilić, a Franciscan missionary who became the first Croatian saint when he was martyred in Jerusalem in 1391.

ROGOZNICA - a small fishing village on an island (connected by road to the mainland) in an almost completely enclosed bay, 34 km south of Šibenik. It’s often visited by boaters because of the beautiful marina Frapa, known as the safest on this part of the Adriatic.

Visit Sibenik on a one-week charter which could start and end in Sibenik or start and end in Split, and include Sibenik. Considered the “Gateway to the Kornati Archipelago ,” a beautiful stark National Park, Sibenik has an extensive Old Town full of winding walking streets, paved in marble slabs, a beautiful cathedral, and a City Museum in a 14th century Rector’s Palace. While towering over the city are several old fortresses and a graveyard. Sibenik also has something for Game of Thrones fans as well, as several scenes were filmed in and around Sibenik. Sibenik is a great stop or an excellent starting and or ending location for a yacht charter when chartering yachts and exploring Croatia north of Split .

While Sibenik did see fighting between Serbian and Croatian forces in the recent Croatian War for Independence, luckily all of the damage has been repaired. Today when cruising into the harbor, the dome of the 15th century Cathedral of St. James can be seen standing up from behind the buildings on the harbor front.

Today the Cathedral of St. James is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for being built entirely from stone, and decorated with a remarkable frieze of 71 sculpted faces of men, women and children. The Cathedral is considered a combination of Gothic and newly emerging, at that time, Renaissance styles. One can see in the vaulting, façade, and dome a transition from the gothic arch on the first floor to the rounded arch higher up in the building.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site guards the entrance to the harbor of Sibenik, the Fortress of St. Nicholas built by the Venetians between the 15th and 17th centuries. Only able to be seen on the inside by buying a ticket on an organized boat tour from Sibenik, otherwise, there are nice views from the top of the outside of the fort, and the fort is a nice photo op when cruising by on your charter yacht in and out of the harbor.

Nearby Krka Falls  Photo Credit Missy Johnston

Sibenik sits at the head of the mouth of Sibenik Bay. However, at the northern end of the bay is the terminus of the Krka River at the village of Zaton after the river tumbles down a series of falls called Krka Falls in Krka National Park.

This is beautiful area although very heavily visited by tourists, especially large groups in tour buses. Visiting Krka Falls is easy to do from Sibenik. Also part of Krka National Park is Visovac Monastery on manmade Visovac Island reachable from shore by National Park boats. On arrival on the island, National Park Guides provide a nice tour of the island and church which is well worth seeing, and from there a quick visit to Krka Falls is easy to do by land.

Visiting by water requires accessing Zaton on a motor yacht, as there is a bridge that a sailing yacht may not be able to pass under. At that point transferring with a ticket to a National Park boat with a mass of humanity to walk around Krka Falls , only to be able to return by another National Park boat after waiting in line to find an available seat. The area of Zaton and the National Park land around Krka Falls saw heavy fighting during the Croatian War of Independence.

Sibenik Bay Shell Farm Croatia

In the bay between Zaton and Sibenik, is fresh water is mixing with salt water. This is the perfect blend of brackish water for growing shellfish. Several shell farms growing oysters and black mussels can be seen floating on the water.

Sibenik has a small flat area along the harbor which starts quickly to build into the mountain range behind. There is an extensive Old Town of walking streets starting along the harbor with walking streets and stairways that wind up into the higher terrain behind. Be prepared to be met by a multitude of steps heading up to reach into the mountainside behind the harbor area.

Sibenik is the only Croatian city settled originally by Croats. The city did change hands over the centuries but was Croatian in origination and not only is well worth visiting, but also is a stopping point to visit Visovac Monastery and Krka Falls (best by land) and then head by sea to the Kornati Archipelago when chartering a yacht in Croatia on a yacht charter itinerary cruising north of Split.

What to See and Do in Sibenik, Croatia

Sibenik Cathedral, Croatia

Cathedral of St. James : A UNESCO World Heritage site, this is a gem of a cathedral, where architectural transitions in style can clearly be seen. Unique to the Cathedral on the exterior is the frieze of 71 sculpted faces of men, women and children said to be carvings of various Sibenik locals of the time.

Šibenik City Museum : Housed in a 17th Century Rector’s Palace, located on the harbor front, the museum houses a permanent collection of artefacts that date from prehistory to the end of the Venetian period. All exhibits have English translations.

Old Town: An extensive area of shops, bars, restaurants, and boutiques, this area is right behind the main quay anchored on one end by the Cathedral of St. James.

Medieval Monastery Mediterranean Garden: A nice little garden in the shape of a cross filled with herbs and an ice cream shop. This is a good spot to stop for a rest when climbing the myriad of steps on the walking streets up into the hillsides of Sibenik.

St. Anne City Cemetery: Perched at the top of many steps and walking paths overlooking the city of Sibenik, reaching the cemetery is a great hike for those wanting exercise. Once reaching the cemetery, the grounds offer a great view and a great photo opportunity of the city and harbor.

St. Lawrence Church and Monastery: The 18th century Monastery has a nice garden with fountains. A small café and is located part way up the hillsides behind the harbor front of Sibenik. The gardens are filled with roses and herbs and are a nice place for a rest, drink, and perhaps lunch or a snack when wandering around and hiking up the hillsides of Sibenik.

Game of Thrones Filming Locations: Old Town Sibenik itself was the filming location for the city of Braavos. St. John Fortress was used in certain scenes, and the Cathedral of St. James was the filming location for the Iron Bank in Season 5, Episode 9 (‘The Dance of Dragons”) where Ayra Stark abandons a mission for the Faceless Men. Instead, she follows Mace Tyrell and Meryn Trant as they pay a visit to Tycho Nestoris to negotiate on the repayment of the crown’s massive debts. In another episode that takes place in Braavos, relive the scene where Arya Stark follows locals in the square in front of the Cathedral. Scenes that take place in the House of Black and White were filmed on a sound stage, however much of Arya Stark’s Braavos explorations were filmed in the stone-walled alleyways and plazas in Old Town Sibenik.

St. Nicholas Fortress Sibenik Croatia

St. Nicholas Fortress  Photo Credit Missy Johnston

St. Nicholas Fortress: Built by the Venetians between the 15th and 17th Centuries to protect Sibenik by guarding the mouth of the bay, now renovated, the interior can only be seen by buying a ticket on a tour boat out of Sibenik. The exterior can be seen along with the views from the top of the Fortress just by landing at the Fortress by ship’s tender or by accessing the Fortress from land.

You will be beguiled by the beauty of the Old Town where you can lose yourself in narrow alleys and steps, only to find a charming square or church somewhere as you wander. You will always see St John's Cathedral, a basilica that dominates the town and can be seen from all sorts of surprising places.

One of the highlights of Sibenik is its Marina Mandalina - the only formally recognised superyacht marina in Croatia, it is a mini-resort in its own right. You will find a range of bars and fashionable boutiques, as well as restaurants serving the best of Mediterranean cuisine.

Beyond the drab Yugoslav era industrial suburbs to the north of Sibenik is another jewel - the Krka River and the national park it flows from. To the south is the Sibenik archipelago, where you will no doubt pause as you explore the Croatian coast and islands.

Explore Sibenik By Renting A Yacht

A Sibenik yacht charter with Borrow a Boat is nothing too stressful. After presenting your sailing qualifications (only on a bareboat charter) and paying your fee you inspect the vessel and set sail.

When considering where to go a motor boat or motor yacht charter could get you up the river to the nearby national park, where you can moor your boat at ACI Marina Skradin and then get soaked by the Krka waterfall, a chilly release from the heat of summer. A sailing yacht will make it up the River Krka too as the river is navigable for several miles upstream.

Heading out to sea, on the beautiful bay you will run into the Sibenik Archipelago, the densest archipelago in Croatia. The biggest island Murter is definitely worth a day ashore, though with around 5,000 population it is hardly a dense metropolis. You will find secluded coves to relax in and ashore, nut, oilve and fruit groves.

The romantic town of Vodice is just to the north west of of Sibenik with its well equipped ACI marina.

If you sail beyond the Sibenik Archipelago across the Adriatic Sea you'll soon find the famous Kornati Island National Park which is just another world to what you would see at home. After this you can go south towards Trogir and Split or north towards Zadar and Biograd.

How To Get To Sibenik

Sibenik is equidistant between Split Airport and Zadar International Airport. You can wither take a bus or taxi (with a change in Split if heading there by bus) to the marina.

Zadar Airport takes European international flights throughout the summer months, but not during the winter months.

Split Airport has more flights every day from more countries, and many of these throughout the year.

Marinas In Sibenik

There are three major marinas close to Sibenik, though only Mandalina Marina is in the town itself. Let's look at the three in reach of Sibenik.

ACI Marina Skradin:

List of additional services: Anchoring buoys, ATM, toilet and shower, WiFi, restaurant and foreign exchange

Suggested Sailing Routes From Sibenik

Due to its central location, Sibenik has some of the best options in Croatia for a 7 or 14 day luxury yacht charter. Whether a bareboat or skippered yacht charter on a motor yacht, catamaran or sailing yacht you can see some of the best that Croatia has to offer. Here are some highlights of where you could go.

7 day southerly circuit: A seven day southerly circuit could take you as far south west as Split and Trogir along the Adriatic Coast. These two historic towns are yachting meccas yet have barrelfuls of charm. As you head down, you will pass through the Sibenik Archipelago and you could take in the famous party town of Hvar. Heading back north-east you shouldn't pass the Kornati islands without a pause.

7 day northerly circuit: With Biograd and Zadar as your northerly points of this sailing holiday (perhaps partying in Biograd and getting a cosmopolitan fix in Zadar) you should drop by the Zadar Archipelago before heading back south to either the Kornati Islands or even spending a final day moored at Skradin on the Krka River and exploring the national park.

14 day circuit: The historic cities of Split and Zadar are bustling yet have great old towns. Over a 14 day sailing vacation you would never be sailing more than 30 nautical miles on a big day but generally 15-20 nautical miles on average. You can explore the islands as you go, perhaps even changing your mind to focus on a smaller area with fewer sailing miles but more that satisfies you.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Sibenik

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. The ACI Marina chain also adds 20% to their berthing fees at this time of year. The climate is mild most of the sailing season with occasional rain showers.

Sailing Weather In Sibenik

April and May: There will be occasional rainy days but temperatures sit between 22-28C or higher. Winds are generally NW, 10-20 knots

June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 26C and up to the mid 30s. Wind is generally NW 5-10 knots

September-October: In this part of the world it rains more in October and the temperature falls away to 10 degrees C in the evenings, though it can get up to a comfortable 20C on an autumn day. Winds can get up to 20 knots.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Marina Manadlina is the only marina in Sibenik. It is very well equipped and a resort in its own right. Up river is the ACI Marina Skradin that is more suited for the odd day exploring the national park than a long stay. Close-by is ACI Marina Vodice in a town arguably more beautiful than Sibenik itself.

The ACI Marina chain hike their prices during the peak season of July and August. The waters can be busier too. Have you considered doing a Sibenik yacht charter during school term time where you can get the best of the weather without the worst of the crowds.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Discover Šibenik region

The Sibenik region covers about 1,000 square kilometers and is composed of an island and a coastal region, and its hinterland. The county of Sibenik has 242 islands, islets and rocks.

motor yacht charter sibenik

Sibenik lies almost in the middle of the Croatian Adriatic Coast, in the picturesque and indented bay around the mouth of the river Krka, one of the most beautiful Karst rivers in Croatia.

Today Sibenik is the administrative, political, economic, social and cultural center of a county which stretches along the 100 kilometer long belt between the Zadar and Split Rivieras, reaching up to 45 kilometers deep into the hinterland.

The Sibenik region covers about 1,000 square kilometers and is composed of an island and a coastal region, and its hinterland. The county of Sibenik has 242 islands, islets and rocks. Most of this archipelago lies in the north-west part of Sibenik's waters and is very indented, bare and sparsely inhabited.

The county of Sibenik has only 10 island settlements. The most numerous group of islands are the Kornati, widely known for their bizarre shapes and luxurious and magnificent landscapes. From Sibenik bay the open sea and the islands are reached through a narrow winding channel about 10 kilometers long and 300 - 1200 meters wide. More than enough reasons that makes Šibenik yacht charter a perfect summer holiday option.

A view of Sibenik reveals the unique harmony of urban poetics of the town and its natural surroundings.

The harbor, connected with the open sea by the St. Anthony Strait, has been the initiator of development of sailing, trading and the overall economic prosperity of the town for centuries. At the entrance into the straight, there is the fortress of St. Nicholas, the most important renaissance fortress at the eastern coast of the Adriatic.

The town is surrounded by the fortresses of St. John, St. Michael and Subicevac that, together with the fortress of St. Nicholas, make the symbol of the centuries long no subjugation of Sibenik, confirmed in the recent Fatherland War. The St. Jacob’s, the cathedral of Sibenik, built for over a century, is a testimony of persistency, sacrifice and belief of the generations of inhabitants of Sibenik. By many things it is unique not only in the Croatian architecture, but in the European as well: it is entirely built of stone, no other material being used; it is unique by the brave structure of stone slabs and ribs, with no binding material; it is also unique among renaissance churches by its trefoil front facade; finally, it is unique by the harmony of its architecture and the row of 71 realistic sculptural portraits around the apses.

Yacht Charter Šibenik

Sibenik  is an excellent y acht charter base in Croatia, and  very popular with boaters. This ancient Dalmatian town is situated in a beautiful bay, where the Krka river enters the sea. Well situated right  in the middle of the Croatian Adriatic, from here you can sail the Sibenik Archipelago and enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty. The channel of St. Anthony, connects Sibenik to the open sea. At the entrance to the channel is the impressive renaissance fortress of St. Nicholas. From one side of town, you will see the sea, bay and islands and on the other side, five rivers, thirteen lakes, and eight waterfalls. All this makes Šibenik incredible.   Charters departing  from the Sibenik area have access to some fine cruising grounds which will make your sailing vacation in Croatia something special. If you would like to rent a boat from Sibenik there are two marinas: the Mandalina Marina and ACI Skradin Minarina. In Sibenik we have a number of great offers for  motor yacht charter .

Sibenik is very well connected with other Croatian and European cities. The Adriatic coastal road, highway is very close, as well as bus and train lines. Ferries  from Italy come into Zadar and Split . The closest international airport is in Split, located 70 kilometers away.  Zadar International Airport is about 75 kilometres away. A wonderful starting place for a yacht charter in Croatia.

Sailing Conditions

Sailing conditions are excellent and navigation straightforward. Mild winds, sunny weather and minimal strong currents and tides virtually guarantee a great sailing holiday. The prevailing winds are the friendly Maestral from the North West, the Bora from the North East, and Sirocco and Jugo winds from the South/South East. Care should be taken with the Bora as it can be gusty and sudden. Some of the best Mediterranean sailing there is.

The Adriatic Splendour

Why choose sibenik.

If you are a traveller who is looking to explore the stunning Adriatic coast and beautiful islands of the region, Yacht Charter Sibenik is the right choice for you. The historic city in central Dalmatia, Sibenik is the starting point for your excellent charter adventure.

Let’s not make your voyage only a vacation. Make it a ravishing journey into all the beauty of the Adriatic’s nature and its cultural wonders.

A seaside jewel tucked away among the Adriatic Sea’s blue waves is the city of Sibenik in Northern Dalmatia . It draws tourists with its captivating beauty. It is situated in the Adriatic Sea at the Krka River’s mouth.

The oldest Croatian settlement on the Adriatic coast, it is the county capital of Sibenik-Knin. Sibenik is known as “Kresimir’s Town” since it was first referenced in a document by King Petar Kresimir IV in 1066 .

While exploring the city, you’ll be amazed by its cobbled lanes, historic churches, and sturdy walls. All of it serves as evidence of its rich history. The magnificent Cathedral of St. James , which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is one of the first attractions to see during your visit.

Head to the promenade in St. Anthony’s Channel for a breathtaking view of Sibenik. This spot is very popular among visitors. Numerous spots within the city could offer panoramic views. Because of its close proximity to the city centre and straightforward boat transportation, this promenade is a crucial component of the city’s tourism offerings.

What is the best time to visit Sibenik?

When we talk about the weather in the Sibenik Region , we often speak of the typical Mediterranean climate. This area is ideal for everyone to spend the summer holidays in because of its wet winters and hot, dry summers.

The temperature on the ground might get to 40 degrees Celsius during the summer. However, the temperature of the water is only around 25, making sailing a particularly enjoyable experience in the summer. One thing to bear in mind is that since this region has dry summers, visitors should prepare for plenty of sunshine.

Top destinations

One of the joys of yacht chartering in Sibenik is the possibility of discovering hidden jewels that are inaccessible by land.

Sail to the serene island of Murter, famed for being a starting point for visiting Kornati National Park .

Enjoy delectable regional wines and cuisine when you visit the historic town of Skradin , which is tucked away at the base of the Krka River .

Do not miss Primostan , an enchanted town with lovely narrow streets and wonderful beaches, ideal for a leisurely stroll or a soothing dip in the Adriatic.

Beyond its alluring islands, the Sibenik Riviera is home to numerous beautiful coastal towns that are just begging to be discovered. You can enjoy freshly caught seafood and take in the traditional Dalmatian architecture by anchoring your yacht in Tribunj, a charming fishing village.

Explore Vodice, a lively resort town offering a vibrant nightlife and vibrant cultural events.

Every destination along the Sibenik Riviera guarantees a special experience that will captivate you.

Savouring the moments

Two fortresses, Sv. Mihovil and Barone, host numerous musical and cultural events throughout the summer. The International Children’s Festiva l takes place in June, and in July you can enjoy the Salsa Beach Splash Festival , the Supertoon Animated Film Festival , and the OFF Jazz & Blues Festival . The Dalmatian Chanson Festival takes place in Kresimir’s town at the end of August on the magnificent Renaissance square. Not to be overlooked is Sibenik’s three-day Mediaeval Fair , which takes place in September and allows the town to relive its heyday.

Sibenik is well-known for its rich musical heritage, especially the “Klape” choir tradition . UNESCO has recognised this distinctive art form and added it to its list of intangible cultural heritage.

Visit Pellegrini in the old town if you are looking for Croatia’s best restaurant. They specialise in typical Sibenik cuisine, which includes seafood, locally sourced spices, and homemade olive oil.

For those seeking an adrenaline rush during their holiday, they can try bungee jumping from Sibenik’s bridge or opt for canyoning on the River Cikola. Additionally, free climbing is also available in the area.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

Related stories

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
