quest 33 sailboat

Racer/cruiser r

While the J/145 has marked deadrise and Icon has minimal deadrise, the Quest has an arclike midsection with no deadrise. I grabbed my circle template to check this midsection, and below the DWL at the midsection, this shape is almost exactly a portion of an arc. The topsides are very full and this fullness is accentuated by the large radius at the sheerline. The overall effect is a suppositorylike hull form very soft in shape. One nice thing about this type of hull form is that the hull shape doesn't change much as the boat heels. Still, it's amazing that two so diverse hull forms, the J/145 and the Quest 33, both result in fast and manageable boats. I would like to see curves of immersed areas for both boats. While the hull forms can be wildly different, the immersed volume curves can be identical.

The Quest shows short ends with a plumb bow. This boat is all sailing length. With an L/B of 2.86, the Quest will be shopping in the "husky" department for sure. The plan view of the deck shows the Quest to be very full in both ends at the deck, but keep in mind that the beam at the waterline will be much narrower. The D/L is 106. Note that the keel fin is raked forward 2 degrees. I've done this on two boats with very successful results. You will need a kelp cutter to keep the fin clean, and I don't see one on this design.

The rig is a tall fractional one with a masthead chute flown from a retractable bowsprit. The spreaders are swept 16 degrees. The mainsail is loose-footed, and there is about 12 inches of roach overlap on the backstay. The SA/D is 33.6 and that ought to keep you on your toes and your boat on its ear. You will need to sail this wide boat flat.

It's a handsome boat, although I'd like to see more shape in the cabintrunk. Still, the amorphous lines of the cabintrunk blend with the hull shape.

What do you want to do when you go below in this light 33-footer? Do you want a nice roomy berth for cruising? Do you want adequate head and a wet locker? Do you want a comfortable place to sit, eat and entertain, and an efficient and spacious galley? Well, four out of five ain't bad. The bulbular lines of the hull and deck have been carried below into the interior shapes, and these seem to work well. You know me, I'd like a bigger galley. I also wonder how much fun it would be sleeping in the aft double berth and having to get up in the night.

The deck plan shows a raised portion of the deck where you sit (to keep your seat dry) but no cockpit coamings. This is fine for racing, but I like to find a nook to nestle into when I want to sit in the cockpit on the hook and read. This cockpit is nestle-and-nookless.

The short traveler is mounted on the cockpit sole. I'd like to see the traveler raised to deck level and go much farther outboard. You can get either wheel or tiller steering with this boat. You can also get optional water ballast.

I think that if you want to do some racing and some cruising in a 32-foot, 6-inch boat you could do it with some insurance of performance in this shapely little design.

Quest 33 (Martin)

Quest 33 (Martin) is a 32 ′ 6 ″ / 9.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Rodger Martin and built by Holby Marine starting in 1998.

Drawing of Quest 33 (Martin)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Shallow draft: 5.9’ Twin rudders available as an option.

gal is asking about cats (and very much loved) 29' can offer me. There's a Prout Snowgoose 37 in my marina, and after talking to the owner for a while, I ended up google'ing the smaller Quest Prouts.

A few questions:

- I'm 5'9" (1.75m) so is rarely an issue for me in the 31 / 33? I've googled but found different answers and plans.

Should I go 'cat hunting', what do I have to pay special attention to when it comes to the little Prout Quest ? Is there any significant difference between the 31 and the 33, except for the obvious 2'? Is the newer 33 a big improvement over the 31 - and if so, why?

I'll be full-time - just me and ships' cat (yes, a cat on a cat. I guess it's unavoidable really ...).
I'm in the and apart from the usual trips to the UK and maybe , I want to slowly make my way down the Spanish and Portuguese coast. After that - if still afloat, healthy, having fun and enough monies left after all those tapas - continue on until I've reached the . As long as I don't turn around, a very cat-friendly , methinks.

And since I'm asking, does anyone know of any blog about one of these little Prouts sailing around the world?

I did a couple of searches before , but not that much info here on these little Quests. Do people just don't want small cats or are they unsuitable for what I'm considering them for? - Charles Baudelaire

recently. I'm on a Snowgoose 34. I'd recommend going to the bigger size. I singlehand mostly also and the larger size will be a more stable platform, makes it easier and safer.

and there are a no of prouts available in from around 35 k USD for a 34 ft and a 38 ft at 77 K USD .These prouts slam and are very similar in shape as the earlier Dean 33 ft and 36 ft .I owned a 36 ft Dean Aero which had the improved design with higher bridgedeck.
Very importantly you do not want to go too small with a Cat as they will be much more difficult to sail not to mention how uncomfortable a ride it can give you with a whole lot of see saw action. If I was you I would buy a prout they are well proven and cheaper than the more modern hull design cats .The slamming is unpleasant but ask those who own them and they will tell you they got used to it.If your allows go for a more modern hull design though .You might even consider an old Dean 36 they are available all over the world proving that they can get there .Slowly but surely.

, heads and nav station are, is full headroom; the bridgedeck pod gives you crouching headroom, but you sit on the bridgedeck.

The aft and fwd berths are singles, but you can convert the bridgedeck into a double.

They do bash a bit into a headwind on coastal waves, and the north sea coast does give you very steep seas, but they're very strong and ; a at the right season would be well within its capability. Just about all British cats of that era are decked almost to the bows and bash to windward in steep waves, but they are designed to take it as most of the coast has strong tidal streams and against tide in shallow waters will give you steep seas.

I believe you'll find any of the Prouts to be more than adequate. Obviously, the bigger cat shall be more comfortable but also costs, as you know go up with size, and is it really necessary for a hander to have a bigger ? A friend has a Snow Goose 37 and is very happy (three on board). We saw a 31ft'er years ago and the couple on board had nearly circumnavigated. There is good sitting headroom where it is needed (I'm 6'6"). You'll have no issues standing in the hulls where you need good headroom. Yes, they do plough, rather than slam, but this not an issue with the hull/central nacelle design. I would caution against a Dean 365 oceanliner which looks very similar. We bought a brand new one and it sailed like a barge despite what many owners claim. A Lloyds proved ours (and presumably others from the mould) had a slightly distorted configuration with the hulls being slightly out of true to each other - one hull was pointing a couple of inches outwards and also downwards. I know there might be some hectic denials of this but we nearly ended up in court with Peter Dean over this fact before he withdrew. The also challenged the quality of the fore bulhead material. In mitigation the Dean 33 does seem a decent and offers very good value and internal space if you can find one: they are pretty rare. My choice would be the Prout 37, followed by the 35, 33, and finally 31 - simply because of space. If a Dean 33 were available it would also get serious consideration - Ive only ever seen twin engined Dean 33's - a good point in my opinion.

. I'm single, I don't need a 36' cat ...

Since I have to save up for my trip and also keep a kid in college, it's hard enough as it is. Add to that a cat instead of going with my boat and I'm already making things hard & expensive enough, and adding enough extra 'waiting' time.

At some point, a boat will just have to do and I have to go. I'm not that young anymore; I don't mind trading off some time for a little more comfort and room then I have now, but I'm not going to wait forever just to afford a boat several sizes bigger then I want or need. (There are some personal reasons that keep me from leaving now, not something for a public forum but important enough for me to put my life 'on hold' for just a bit longer.)

In all honesty: my current boat is more than capable. But I would so love a little more room and a little more creature comforts then camping in a very, very basic & can provide. This is regardless of where I might go or end up; I full time and even if I never make it to the coconuts, I still would very much like a little comfort and room.

North Sea sailing isn't very cat-friendly. Or mono-friendly at times. The weekend trips to the UK are usually good fun, but I also remember ending up on the floor, on the , waiting for it to be over. It being the trip or my life, I stopped caring. Real seasickness is a dangerous thing. (That memorable trip was with a former boat. Never, ever, go to sea on a boat that doesn't sail! - - Canaries - - deep breath and go for it. The roughest bit of that is the start: Netherlands - UK - Biscay. height issue (6'2"). If you are shorter, that is far less of an issue.

There is one sitting in front of us right now. Seems to be a solid design, though arguably a as the central nacelle is in the water (and no it doesn't appear to be overloaded). Unless you are or expecting a speed demon, not an issue.

20hp should be adequate for most condition but based on our experience with a similar size , it's at the lower end of acceptable. We are not fans of the stillette outdrive. While it allows for great maneuverability under , it seems to be the weak link in the drivetrain. We prefer a single (Steerable from the helm) or twin engine (though that comes with additional expense and maintenance).

We wound up with a 10m but would also give serious consideration to the 9m model especially if single and small (size of person). Lots of 9m boats around at reasonable prices. I would say either is more spacious for the .

You might also consider a heavenly twins but it might not provide a lot more space than your current mono.

There are a few smaller US cats that make it over occasionally that are worth looking at if you come across them (Gemini, , Endeavor).

I leave the issue alone as someone will say none of these are capable even though I'm aware of every model listed having done ocean crossings. No question any of them will do a leisurely coastal hopping run to Portugal.

Designer's Comments - Rodger Martin website

The Quest 33 is a superb example of a fast contemporary “club racer” in which a family can comfortably cruise, and win ’round-the-buoys or point-to-point races under PHRF. These boats are Open Designs, and are not based on any restrictive rules! The Quest 33 is a development of the successful Quest 30, designed by us and built by Holby Marine Co.

The Quest 33 offers a finer entry for increased upwind speed, a longer waterline for greater speed all ’round and larger interior and cockpit spaces. The extended, open stern looks good and facilitates swimming and boarding from a dinghy.

This is a proven fast sailplan in PHRF, fast coastal passages & even in the Singlehanded TransAtlantic Race! while for cruising the boat has all the power you need from the mainsail & 100% jib. The ingenious bowsprit shoots out at the pull of a line for setting the asymmetrical spinnaker. Wide traveler, vang and halyard give infinite tuning power to the mainsail.

The deck is securely surrounded by a built-in ‘recessed’ toerail. The cockpit measures a vast 11’6″ long, and works equally well with a wheel or tiller, for cruising or for racing. The jib-furler is recessed under the foredeck and just aft is an anchor locker with a hinged cover . Next is the forehatch on the forward end of the deckhouse. The seahood at the forward end of the main companionway hatch doubles as a line-cover for the controls running aft from the mast to the house-top winches. At the aft end of the cockpit there are two large lockers under the seats plus a large centre locker under the cockpit sole.

The Quest 33 has a very spacious well-ventilated interior, especially roomy for a boat of this size. Start aft, with a palatial aft berth with plenty of airspace over it. It is huge. You can sleep North-South or East-West. Then, at the base of the companionway, there is the galley to port, with 2-burner stove with oven, ice-box & sink with stowage below, & outboard.

To starboard, a complete enclosed head with full headroom & wet gear area. Then, further forward on the starboard side, the navigation area, served from the saloon seat. Now you’re in the saloon proper with comfortable full-sized seat/berths (6’6″ long) with good seat backs and an optional drop-leaf table in between. This is a pleasant area for dining & socializing & a great off-watch area while sailing.

Forward of the saloon, through an arced bulkhead there is an area of storage shelves & lockers on each side and then the forward double berth, once again with much air & light. Plenty of foot-space at the forward end, as there is a separate forepeak/chain locker up there. The Quest 33 can be enjoyed as much for its interior as for its sailing abilities.

CONSTRUCTION

All Quest 33s are built using a licensed resin infusion system. This provides the best possible production laminate quality. Vinyl Ester resins assure resistance to blistering & have superior properties to polyesters. One of the Quests built to this system has done a double Transatlantic in 5 weeks under racing conditions. Holby quality is everywhere in evidence.

PERFORMANCE

The Quest 33 is faster than many boats 5 & 10 feet longer! This boat is a PHRF winner! The sailplan is highly refined and easy to use & adapt, and the fin-keel & rudder are the latest, thin, high-aspect foil designs.

The design is based on the same principals as the Open Class ’round the world BOC racers & is unspoiled by slavish following of arcane ‘racing’ rules. These are called ‘handicaps’ for good reason! Yet a family cruising with ease will make very fast trips from port to port, & have the pleasure of gliding by bigger boats during a daysail.

The Quest 33 provides sportboat-like performance in a stable, easy-to-sail boat with generous cruising space in the cockpit and interior.

Builder's Comments - Holby Marine - Rodger Martin website

An exciting breakaway cruiser/racer with full amenities for family cruising. Features top-quality construction by Holby Marine Co., retractable sprit, and full headroom below decks. Winner of P.H.R.F. New England’s, Buzzard’s Bay Regatta (Class), and Block Island Raceweek (Class). Overall winner of Nantucket 160 & Newport Solo/Twin (Twice!). One boat, “Hot Glue Gun” crossed the Atlantic TWICE in 5 weeks. The Quest 33 features a highly upgraded design based on the Quest 30 cruisable racer, with extended transom, new bow, new deckhouse and single spade rudder. Bermuda One-Two & Figawi Race Overall Winner under her builder, Barrett Holby.

quest 33 sailboat

I like the new breed of sport boats, and the Rodger Martin-designed, Barrett Holby-built Quest 30 illustrates brilliantly why. Skeptics are apt to look at her and see a vessel of confused purpose, but I see a racer up top with real accommodations down below, all in 30 feet and all for around $100,000. As sport boats go, the Quest has a far larger and more usable interior than others of her type. In short, she goes fast and she takes care of her crew.

Speed enhancers include a generous sail plan, an optional carbon mast, an asymmetrical spinnaker on a retractable sprit, a large working cockpit without coamings, a deep bulb keel, and optional side-tank water ballast. Integrated convertible sprits provide great power potential for shorthanded downwind work, and the one on this boat happens to be fully enclosed so as to control the ingress of seawater from leaky bushings or simply from the retraction of a wet spar.

The PHRF rating has ranged between 81 and 87, with the New England number settling in at 84. This rating applies either to a Quest 30 with no water ballast and seven crew, or to one equipped with water ballast and four crew. Significant triumphs in more than a few competitive New England PHRF championships over the course of the past year, not to mention David Scully’s respectable 21-day Atlantic crossing last June in the Europe 1 Star singlehanded race from Plymouth, England, to Newport, Rhode Island, aboard the Quest 30 Hot Glue Gun, point to a solid design with a real appetite for fast passage making. We sailed hull number one out of Newport, equipped with a deep bulb and side water ballast tanks. This type of movable and expendable water ballast should not be confused with the flooding water ballast used aboard the current spate of trailerable pocket cruisers in which the water is flooded into a central-axis cavity low in the bottom of the boat. In those boats, there is no shifting of water from side to side and there is no deep permanent ballast for added righting and security against capsize. By contrast, the Quest is configured in the fashion of a state-of-the-art singlehanded world-girdler, with sophisticated, albeit simple, gravity feed plumbed between the outboard tanks, and substantial fixed ballast at the bottom of a real keel.

There is tankage for 1,000 pounds of water on each side, which creates about 9 1/2 degrees of heel at dockside with one side full. Happily this falls within the 10-degree mark cited in most shorthanded eligibility constructs — a significant safety provision designed to ensure that you can still recover if caught aback with the tanks full on what has become the new leeward side.Seawater is used to fill either the high-side tank on a long weather board or the low-side tank just prior to tacking. Of course the leeward tank can be filled more quickly because the water need not be lifted as far. Our test boat was equipped with an electric pump rated at 3,700 gallons per minute, which would lift 1,000 pounds of seawater into the tank in about two minutes through a 1 1/2-inch hose.

If you prefer to use muscle power in lieu of electricity to fill the tanks, an optional Edson diaphragm pump can be fitted. Once filled, no more pumping is needed. Upwind the cross flow valve is opened about a minute before the tack and the water flows through a three-inch hose into what will be the new high-side tank. If the breeze poops out or you turn downwind, the water is allowed to drain out the transom and the boat is lightened by the equivalent of six fewer crew on the rail.

To date, side water ballast boats have been impractical for closed-course tactical racing; however, for long-distance tilts or passage making there is a real performance benefit combined with a notable reduction of heel angle. The Quest 30 is very beamy at 11’6″ and exceptionally beamy aft. This is a recent trend in sailboats and in many cases I consider it overdone. Certainly in attempts to build a “maximum 30-footer,” beam overall and beam aft tend to grow, but often the same fiberglass and surface area would make a much better 33-footer of more normal proportions, with more waterline length and less of a tendency to drag the transom.

The extreme beam aft does call for a particularly interesting feature, that of twin rudders. The structural implications of truing up two rudders and choreographing the mechanical linkage to a single tiller may be complicated, but you get away with smaller, lower-aspect foils and a more efficient angle of attack from the leeward rudder when the boat is heeled. Construction is of bidirectional glass and balsa core wetted out and cured by way of the resin infusion process. We hear a lot about resin infusion these days and as it grows in popularity and scope I stand solidly behind it. Nonetheless, the ultra-high-tech carbon laminates will continue to come out best I believe through the application of prepregs cured by means of heat and pressure available in a more “conventional” autoclave.

Accommodations include a large double berth in the stern, a smaller double up in the bow, longitudinal settees in the saloon flanking a fold-up dinette, and a working galley composed of a sink and two-burner stove/oven to port plus an icebox and further counter space to starboard. A fully enclosed head is located abaft the galley element on the starboard side. There is six-foot headroom throughout most of the living space, and a shower option available in the head. Our test Quest was fitted with an outboard motor on a bracket off the stern between the two rudders, but a serious cruising type might be served better by the inboard sail drive system available optionally. With 14 gallons of fuel capacity and 20 of fresh water, you are hardly restricted in conventional 30-footer terms when it comes to taking the boat on a distance cruise. And the vessel’s trump card — a high-performance sail plan with an easy-to-manage roller-furled jib — certainly indicates enough horsepower to make quick work of the miles.

So is the Quest 30 a cruising boat or a racing boat? From the perspective of a blue-water cruising couple ready to move aboard and sail off self-contained to faraway places for extended periods of time, perhaps this is not the best choice. But in a very real sense cruising is an art form, and if yours embraces a style of maximum performance with some practical interior accommodations, the Quest deserves your serious consideration.

The surveyor also challenged the quality of the fore bulhead material. In mitigation the Dean 33 does seem a decent boat and offers very good value and internal space if you can find one: they are pretty rare. My choice would be the Prout 37, followed by the 35, 33, and finally 31 - simply because of space.
