BOOMS WITH A STRONG PROFILE
Seldén booms have a wealth of sophisticated features and can be equipped with a variety of reefing systems to suit different boats and the needs of different sailors. The booms can be fitted for traditional slab reefing or Single Line Reef, or be used for furling masts. The boom extrusions are relatively deep in relation to their width, allowing a lighter extrusion with high resistance to vertical bending. This makes them perfect for use with modern, stiff sailcloth and efficient Rodkicker rigid vangs.
WHY YOU NEED A NEW BOOM
The most common upgrade is to a Single Line Boom. Remain in the cockpit and pull one line to reef your sail and you will prevent adventurous maneuvers at the mast. It’s quick, safe, easy to handle and convenient.
It’s full of potentials. A new boom is prepared for Rodkicker, Lazy jack sliders, easy installation of a stack-pack system and boom light that will lighten up your cockpit at night.

To decide what you need, here are a few useful steps:
- Check if your boat is listed here . If it is you will know what size boom we recommend and its part number.
- Find out how stiff your boat is by calculating the Righting Moment (RM) at 30° heel. This is done with our calculator .

- You need to know the RM, the E-measurement and the Y-measurement to make your choice and all those measurements are explained in this area.
- Compare the forward end of the Seldén boom to the dimensions of the boom bracket on your mast. Clevis pin dimensions and width and depth of the forward end.

LIGHT BOOMS IN CARBON FIBRE
Seldén supply carbon booms that harmonise with its carbon mast range. Carbon booms offer weight savings of up to 35% compared to aluminium. This means that boom weight on a typical 35 ft boat is reduced from 30 kg to just 20 kg.
A lighter boom makes gybing less dramatic, as the boom has less momentum. This has a positive effect on the whole boat, especially with regard to the service life of the mainsheet attachment.
A lighter boom also reduces the tendency of the boat to roll when sailing downwind and it improves the effect of the Rodkickers’ gas spring. The section modulus of a carbon boom is twice as high as that of an aluminium boom with the same weight per meter. A stiff boom makes for improved trim and thus higher boat speed.
Boats that sail IRC, and which are already fitted with a carbon mast, suffer no further rating penalty by up-grading to a carbon boom.
In order to reduce weight, while still providing sheaves for single line reefing, we have made the inboard end fitting as short as possible. The outboard end, which is integrated into the carbon section, is finished with a carbon cover plate.
The mainsheet block is attached using a Dyneema® strop that passes through an aramid tube in the boom. Stainless steel bushings at either end of the tube prevent wear, while local carbon reinforcement provides the extra strength required. Booms with “German” split mainsheet systems have fastening positions for blocks at the inboard end, and two webbing strops to hold up the mainsheet.
The carbon booms feature hand laid local reinforcement in the vang attachment area.
Carbon booms can be supplied ready for conventional slab or single line reefing. Clutches can be integrated into the inboard end if you do not wish to lead the reef lines to the cockpit.
The standard Seldén outhaul system features a Dyneema® outhaul line for leading back to a winch in the cockpit. As an alternative, an internal cascade system with up to 20:1 purchase can be used and operated by hand from the cockpit or by a crew member hiking on the rail.

From single-line reefing systems to high-purchase internal outhaul systems, Seldén booms can be equipped with a range of sophisticated features that will make your sailing easier, faster and more convenient. Class rules are closely studied to push performance to the limit. For example, the Olympus boom section optimises the 470 class rules to give the lightest and stiffest boom the class rules allow.

Forte masts and booms are manufactured using 4-Axis Continuous Fiber Braided Technology originally developed for military applications requiring “super durability” – the ability to withstand bullet shots and to resist spread of damage.
Why Buy A Forte Carbon Fiber Mast?
Forte also uses proprietary process control computers to strategically place and braid each carbon fiber strand directly onto a precisely engineered mandrel. The finished mast is then consolidated and cured at high temperature.
Save Weight Aloft
A Forte carbon fiber mast weighs about half that of an aluminum mast. Weight savings aloft translates into increased righting moment and reduced pitching moment. In heavier winds, your boat will pitch less in chop. Increased righting moment means you can keep more sail up and/or sail with less crew under any heavier conditions.
Yes a carbon mast can be affordable! Our automated manufacturing process allows us to manufacture carbon spars with less hands-on labor than other manufacturers. This means lower cost for you. Also, with some aluminum extrusions becoming scarce along with the labor to have the extrusion tapered…You may be surprised how affordable a Forte carbon spar can be.
Double Life Expectancy
Carbon fiber masts require less maintenance than aluminum masts; carbon fiber does not corrode, and paint flaking associated with aluminum masts does not occur. And, because softer (i.e., lower modulus) aluminum masts are subject to greater fatigue than carbon fiber masts, a Forte carbon fiber mast has at least double the life expectancy.
Transfer Power Efficiently
Power created by your sails is transferred by your mast to your hull. Softer aluminum masts lose some of this power because of bending, flexing and vibration. Due to greater strength and stiffness, a carbon fiber mast efficiently transfers the power from the wind into forward sailing momentum for greater speed.
Meeting Every Requirement
Forte carbon fiber masts are engineered to meet your exact requirements. Your mast can be built straight or tapered, to your specified weight or stiffness. Localized reinforcements (additional material) are laminated into the spar at areas of high stress and locations of any hardware or holes in the spar wall.

Before and during the 2002/2003 Around Alone race, we broke every type and every brand of sail batten you can imagine. This is one thing about Ocean Planet’s unstayed (freestanding) mast, that it is very tough on battens. My Forte mast is fantastic. It is light and extremely strong… two gales in the Bay of Biscay and three flying gybes (thanks to autopilot malfunctions) with the spinnaker up, and each time it came through unscathed. ACADIA Once I gybed in 30 knots of wind 2 miles from the finish with a full main and broke one of the running backstays, so no backstays on downwind… no problems.

A sailboat boom is a horizontal spar to which the foot of a sail is bent. The boom is attached to the lower part of the mast. NauticExpo offers a wide range of booms including V-shaped carbon fiber, aluminum roller furling and carbon roller furling.
The boom holds the foot of the sail fast during raising and lowering operations and facilitates its orientation as a function of course and wind direction. Some include roller mechanisms for furling and unfurling the sail, either within or around the boom.
The boom is attached to the mast via a gooseneck, which swivels horizontally and pivots vertically. The sail is bent to the boom at the tack and the clew. Materials vary with boat type. Racing craft often have carbon fiber versions.
There is an enormous variety of booms. Choice will depend primarily on size and type of vessel, be it sailing dinghy, racer, cruiser or another craft.

An Opti Spar Set is a complete, ready to go set including a mast, boom, sprit pole, and necessary rigging. We have multiple spar set options including the entry/club level Upgraded Club Spar Set, the intermediate level Silver Regatta Spar Set, and three BlackGold spar sets including the BlackGold Medium Spar Set (includes 40mm boom), BlackGold Power Spar Set (includes 45mm boom), and BlackMax Spar Set (includes 55mm boom and 29mm sprit).
Replacement or upgraded optimist masts are available in a variety of configurations, from the race-ready BlackGold range, to the intermediate Silver Regatta range, to the entry level Club mast.
Opti Booms
The standard Opti boom is 40mm in diameter. Both the Silver Regatta Boom and Upgraded Club Boom are 40mm and designed to work as part of either the Silver Regatta Spar Set or the Club Spar Set, respectively. In the BlackGold series, there are multiple boom diameters geared towards sailor weight. These include the BlackGold Medium (40mm), BlackGold Power (45mm) and BlackGold Max (55mm). While the BlackGold Medium is the standard, the Power and Max versions are available for heavier sailors at the top weight range of the class.
Opti Spirt Poles
The sprit pole attaches to the top of the sail and the sprit halyard to help tension the sail. Like the various Opti masts and booms, there are several sprit pole options designed to work with the various spar set ranges. The Club Sprit and Silver Regatta Sprit poles are very similar, except for the wear strip found on the Silver sprit that helps prevent wear. There are two sprit poles in the BlackGold collection, with the standard BlackGold Sprit 27mm used by most sailors and the BlackMax Sprit 29mm designed to be used in conjunction with the BlackMax boom for heavier sailors.
Opti Spar Fittings
In addition to the full range of spar sets and individual spars, West Coast Sailing carries a full range of Optimist spar fittings, from boom end caps and boom jaws, to mast heel plugs and halyard cleats, to eyestraps, blocks, sprit halyard assemblies, and sprit pole ends. Many of these fittings can be used accross multiple spar types, with some designed specifically for BlackGold spars and others for the Silver and Club spars.
Guide to Selecting Opti Spars & Spar Sets - PDF
Selecting the right individual spar or spar set can be confusing, but does not have to be! Major factors to consider are sailor ambition (sailing well and desire to race vs more entry level), sailor weight, and cost. Generally speaking, 'Club' spars are designed for entry level sailors while 'BlackGold' spars are best for active racers who have developed sound skills sailing the Opti. The 'Silver Regatta' spars attempt to offer similar characteristics to the racing spars while priced more like a club set.
Racing Spars vs Club Spars
The most common question is what the difference is between racing and club spars. The defining characteristic of a Upgraded Club Spar Set is the permanently attached sprit halyard block on the front of the mast and the permanent lacing eyes at the head of the mast. These permanently attached fittings mean that the sail cannot be removed from the mast without untying all the sail ties along the luff of the sail. It also means the club spar set has no parts that can be misplaced or dropped in the water because it is self-contained. With the club spar set the sail is typically left on the spars during storage. Although this is a fast, easy way to store your spars and sail, it is hard on the sail. Club sails are constructed to hold up to this kind of abuse and can still be expected to last many seasons.
Racing sails, however, are very delicate and are generally rolled on the boom or separately from the spars to avoid creases, wrinkles and damaged. Racing spars are fitted with a hook-in-block and a wind pennant plug masthead system. These two features allow all the fittings to be removed. The sail is now free to slide on and off of the mast. It should be noted that the Silver Regatta Spar Set has been design to achieve all the features of the racing spar set with a price more comparable to the club spar set. The silver spar set comes with the stiffer 40 mm boom as a standard feature.
Choosing A Racing Spar Set (BlackGold)
When considering racing spars, such as the various BlackGold spar sets, the difference resides mainly in the quality, diameter and manufacturing method of the aluminum tubing used in the spars. Quality is a function of the series number of the aluminum. 7,000 series is an aviation grade, higher in tensile strength than 6,000 series. Coincidentally as the series number goes up, so does the cost. The diameter of the aluminum tubing also affects both the performance and cost. Larger diameter tubing is stiffer and more expensive. The manufacturing process also impacts the cost and quality of the spar. A rolled tube with welded seam is cheaper to produce than an extruded one. (Extruded means that it is formed in one continuous piece) Theoretically, an extrudeds par is both stronger and stiffer.
Booms are available in different diameters as mentioned above. There are 55mm, 45mm, 40mm, and 32mm diameter racing booms. These can be used by different skipper weight ranges or specific sailing conditions. Another unique feature is found in the Black Max boom. It does not have a bridle, just a single attachment point. This benefits a tall sailor in that there is more room under the boom making it easier to tack. Sprits are available in 27mm and 29mm.
Most coaches have preferences and will usually recommend a specific boom orsprit if they feel it will complement your skippers sailing style. The 40 mm boom is considered standard and sail makers test their sails with this boom. With all the confusion and so many choices if you have any doubts get the standard 40 mm boom.

The Navigator 5800 Pilothouse is a spacious yacht introduced in 1999. Like all Navigator yachts, the 5800 PHY rides on a solid fiberglass hull with a long keel and generous 17'4" beam. The Navigator's floorplan is arranged with the galley on the pilothouse level rather than on the salon level, thus effectively separating the galley from the primary entertainment/lounge area. Accomodations include three staterooms on the lower level including a full beam master suite with king size walk around bed and private salon access. The foward VIP stateroom has a queen island berth and the second guest cabin has over/under bunks. Both guest staterooms share a single head with separate stall shower. An "L" shaped sofa (re-uhpolstered in 2020) is to starboard in Navigator's the full beam salon with high gloss maple woodwork, deep pile carpet (replaced in 2018) and built in entertainment system (equipment updated in 2018 with smart tv's, Intellian satellite and a Brennan bluetooth amp). Up two steps combines the galley (convection/microwave 2018 and full size side by side Whirlpool fridge 2020) dining area (settee re-uhpolstered 2019) and lower helm station. Additional features include flybridge access from inside and the aft deck starboard pilothouse door to the foredeck, washer/dryer, lazarette storage. Keep cool with four A/C units (2-16 BTU and 2-10 BTU). Twin 485 hp Detroit 6-71 TI diesels and an 18.5 kw Kohler generator. All mechanicals professionally maintained. This yacht is perfect for cruising or livaboard.
