⛵ A sailboat struck a jetty returning to the Cape May Inlet

⛵ the coast guard rescued two boaters on board before it sank, ⛵ a boat towing service tried to save the sailboat.

CAPE MAY — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a pair of boaters after their sailboat hit a jetty and began to sink Sunday evening.

Only the tip of the 33-foot sailboat's mast remained above water at the Cape May Inlet Monday morning.

The Coast Guard deployed a rescue crew after getting a call from Cape May County Emergency Management around 9:45 p.m., according to a spokesman.

The Coast Guard said that the crew took two people off of the sailboat and sent them to a local fire department vessel for any potential medical treatment. There were no reported injuries.

A local boat towing company, Sea Tow Cape May, reportedly went to the site of the strike but was unable to save the vessel. The Coast Guard stayed at the scene until Sea Tow arrived.

So, I just read an article in the Cape May Herald, that the 2 persons taken off the boat were Canadian Citizens, and had just purchased the boat 2 days prior. There is another thread elsewhere so I get confused! Someone said he was a Canadian, bought the boat 2 days ago, and was taking it back to Canada. There is a back channel into Cape May, 55’ bridge clearance. So coming down the Delaware that would be the preferred approach. At 33’ it is likely he is under 55’ air draft. Otherwise he was likely coming from the Chesapeake, off shore. That approach generally pushes you off shore a bit.

UPDATE: Repairs ongoing to Jersey Shore charter boat that hit bridge, start to sink

Twenty-two people were rescued from a sinking charter cruise Monday evening near Sea Isle City, officials said.

The vessel, called The Starfish , reportedly hit the Townsends Inlet Bridge and started taking on water, according to Coast Guard spokesperson Petty Officer Cynthia Oldham. A good Samaritan brought the passengers to safety and there were no injuries.

There were no reports of pollution from the mishap, Oldham said. Crews with Sea Tow were called to the scene.

The family-owned Starfish Boats have been in business since the 1950s, offering fishing and party cruises, according to its website. A representative at the business said there were no injuries, and they were working to get more information on what happened.

More details were not immediately available.

The Coast Guard rescued three people after the boat they were on began taking on water in Cape May Inlet on Wednesday night.

A 40-foot cabin cruiser began taking on water with three people aboard at about 8:30 p.m., the Coast Guard said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

Coast Guard Station Cape May launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew to assist. The boat crewmembers arrived on scene and pulled the survivors out of the water.

Find out what's happening in Ocean City with free, real-time updates from Patch.

No injuries were reported. The men were not wearing life jackets.

“The entire evolution was very quick,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Second Class Ryan Steglich, Station Cape May's officer of the day during the rescue, said. “We were preparing to get underway for night operations and training when we heard the distress call, and immediately launched the boat. Our crew arrived on scene and pulled the men out of the water in 11 minutes.”

Six of the 11 fuel drums that were on the boat when it began taking on water have been recovered.

Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay is leading a joint response with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s New Jersey office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to minimize pollution threats from the sunken vessel.

The boat remained submerged in the Cape May Inlet Thursday afternoon. The Coast Guard was using radio transmissions to alert mariners and responders.

UPDATE: Boating accident off Oregon Inlet early Monday turns fatal

March 4, 2024 | local news | by: sam walker.

The operator of that vessel was Capt. Charlie Griffin, according to the Facebook page for his boat “Reels Of Fortune.”

Known as “Griff,” he became known the world over after his appearances on the television show “Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks”

“It is with the deepest sadness we report that Charlie Griffin and his beloved dog, Leila, have passed away in a boating accident today,” the Facebook post said.

A second person, whose name has not been confirmed, was also reportedly on board the vessel at the time.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said they received a call about an overdue 30-foot recreational vessel around 11:35 p.m. on Sunday

The boat was transiting from Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach to Wanchese, with their last communication occurring around 6:15 p.m., somewhere off Nags Head, the spokesperson said.

The body, presumed to be Griffin, and his dog, were located sometime Monday morning along Pea Island. A third person onboard the vessel had not been located as of 4:00 p.m. on Monday.

The vessel was located about 70 yards off the breakers along Pea Island, with the cabin detached.

U.S. Coast Guard crews from Station Oregon Inlet continued to search Monday afternoon on a 47-foot boat in the ocean, with local ATVs along the shoreline, while a Station Fort Macon cutter was en route to the area. Private vessels have also been searching the waters around Oregon Inlet, and people have been walking the shoreline to assist.

A helicopter from Base Elizabeth City was also deployed, but could only conduct a limited search due to low clouds, fog, and moderate-to-heavy rain Monday morning.

The Oregon Inlet sea buoy reports seas of around 5 to 6 feet and a water temperature of 51 degrees, while winds were east-to-northeast at 10 to 15 mph at the Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station, around the time the vessel went missing.

Sailing from Forked River, NJ to Cape May

Purchasing a Cape Dory 26 and sailing her solo from Forked River to Cape May. Just daylight sailing and will be staying on the inside until I have too go outside. Anything to look out for, Limestone Channel perhaps?

31seahorse

Hello dhodge and welcome to SBO. Many years ago I traveled with three friends on a recently purchased (by one of those men) Catalina 30 along the coast from Atlantic City, through the Cape May Canal, up the Delaware Bay including a detour up the Cohansee (sp ?) River, through the C & D Canal, and to the Bohemia River on the Chesapeake Bay. I won't bore you with the details of the trip except to say that when we entered the Cape May Inlet we were greeted by a zooming powerboat that sent us all rocking and rolling! With 4 aboard we had plenty of "hands" to give the appropriate signals to the offending boat operator. Enjoy our adventure, observe your charts carefully, and stay safe by wearing your PFD at all times.

With a draft of under 4' you can probably stay on the inside until Atlantic City. From Atlantic City to Cape May you have some 33 nm in open waters.

If you wish some crew I know of one who would like to make that trip.

Some friends made the trip inside two weeks ago from AC to Forked River, went aground twice, important you stay in the channel, Also the trip inside will get you great numbers of Greenhead flies !
