The Tiara 4000 Express is a 40-foot express cruiser that was produced by the iconic Michigan-based yacht-building firm Tiara from 1994 to 2003. Tiara’s first ever mid-cabin design, this innovative yacht was a 90s best-seller thanks to a broad beam, a super-sleek profile with a swept-back helm and enough room to make this a live-aboard long-distance cruiser, not just a day-boat. The 4000 Express was designed to feature either an open cockpit or a pilothouse with a hard-top, and the yacht’s vintage style, seaworthy hull and robust engines ensure that it remains a popular option on the second-hand market to this day.

This yacht’s foredeck is long enough to make it a distinct lounge space in its own right, and high stainless-steel guard-rails surround a double-width sunpad out here with marina-facing views. More expansive living space is to be found to the rear, where an aft-cockpit with a mezzanine sofa and a transom sofa, both in plush Ultraleather, surround an electronically operated hi-lo table that can be used for cocktails or al fresco dining. A starboard side wet-bar console back here features a sink and chilled storage and is bound to keep you hydrated when you return to deck after diving off the full-beam swimming platform to stern. The platform is hardy enough to host a dinghy, but most owners will choose to keep their water-toy in the cavernous transom garage, an early iteration of a feature now ubiquitous. Up front there is a large bench-style sofa for up to three guests facing a starboard helm that can be fitted with your choice of electronics and navigational tech, though original models boasted Raymarine screens and controls. Hardware includes trim tab controls, a large stainless steel steering wheel and ZF throttles, while Icom VHF radio and Furuno radar will help you chart your course across coastal waters.
A chic lower-deck lounge impresses with broad dimensions and almost seven foot of head clearance, while oval portholes and skylights keep the space naturally illuminated. You will find light oak surrounds, a teak and holly sole and soft carpeting down here, while a plush beige leather sofa surrounds a teak table with maple inlay that will host many memorable meals. Across from this there is an open galley with Corian countertops, a stainless-steel double sink, a Sharp microwave, a three-zone induction hob, an integrated Black & Decker drip coffee maker, a Sub-Zero fridge and a good deal of cabinet space. There are two guest cabins for up to four overnight guests down here, each paired with en-suite bathrooms featuring shower facilities, sinks and vanity mirrors. The double cabin amidship features a queen-sized bed, reading lights, shelving and an oak-lined closet, while the master stateroom to the bow comes with a pair of lockers, an island bed, a wall-mounted TV and mirrored wall panels.
Top speeds of around 29 knots come thanks to a pair of 450MHP Cummins 6CTA inboard diesels or optional 435MHP Caterpillar engines, with cruising speeds clocking in at approximately 23 knots. At this lower pace you can expect a range of around 330 nautical miles before refueling, more than enough for extended summer island-hopping along the New England coast.
