Team Wooden Ships – Peter Gregson

A tough Scottish boarding school education followed by an Arts degree at St Andrew’s is an excellent start to dealing with most things in life. After a few years with an international tourist company, I came to sailing relatively late with the purchase in Ibiza of a 150-ton wooden Spanish trading schooner. I rigged and fitted her out in Dartmouth, worked the ship for a few years in film and TV before moving on to refitting a Le Havre pilot cutter, building a series of clinker dinghies and finally settling ashore to start a yacht brokerage in 1979. 

Living by the Salcombe Estuary, our two boys, Richard and Marcus, grew up with boats and the water. Marcus joined the Royal Marines after a marine engineering degree in Falmouth. Richard took to the sea as he describes below and now brings his expertise and experience to join me in the Dartmouth boat sales business.

Meeting hundreds of boat owners over the past 30 years gives one a good insight into what people want from their boating activity. In addition, it enables one to guide newcomers to the sport and help experienced yachtsmen and women find the right boat.

Inspecting thousands of yachts, large and small, project and perfect and working with some wonderful craftsmen gives one a very clear idea of the strengths and weaknesses of traditional boats. Still, the people and some wonderful friendships give us the greatest satisfaction confirming the yacht broker’s motto – the two happiest days of a yachtsman’s life are the day he buys and the day he sells.

Team Wooden Ships – Richard Gregson

I am fortunate to be part of a boating family living in stunning South West England, where sailing is part of life. After growing up with the yacht brokerage in the family and surrounded by traditional boats of all shapes and sizes, at the age of 18, I was lucky enough to get a berth on ‘Activ’, a 140′ 3- masted wooden topgallant schooner. We sailed from the Canary Islands to Tobago via Cape Verde, followed by five months cruising the Islands around Trinidad and the north coast of Venezuela.

After leaving the ship, I went to Cardiff University and gained a Marine Geography degree. During that time, I had another period onboard Activ as mate to bring her back home from Nova Scotia to Denmark.

In the years after university, I spent time gaining sailing qualifications, including Yachtmaster Instructor, and doing several different jobs revolving around boats. I rebuilt a 10m classic offshore powerboat and worked alongside a superb shipwright doing all manner of boat repairs, engineering, paint and varnish jobs. In addition, I freelanced as an instructor for a sailing school, teaching practical and theory courses up to Yachtmaster level. During these years, I also worked as a commercial skipper onboard several offshore survey vessels and sailing vessels, clocking up valuable sea miles.  This included stints as captain of the 118′ West country Trading Ketch Bessie Ellen and the 140′ schooner Activ.

In 2009 I skippered a 14m steel charter yacht from England to the Caribbean and back, taking in all the northern islands from Antigua to Cuba, which was fantastic fun and also a superb experience to take charge of my own vessel on two trans-Atlantic voyages, learning to manage the boat and, more importantly, the crew and guests.

2011 brought one of my most exciting adventures as mate aboard ‘Activ’ on an expedition to North-East Greenland to undertake scientific and artistic projects. You can see the story of this trip at www.ekspeditionen2011.dk .  Since then I have skippered the West Country trading ketch Bessie Ellen during the charter season giving me useful experience in maintaining, handling and sailing these wonderful old boats.  I like to get away to sea as much as possible, a little bit of salt air helps keep the mind sane and the body fresh!

These days I sail a Nordic Folkboat, Wilma.  She was built in Sweden in 1956 and after purchasing her in 2018 I carried out a thorough refit.  I sail now with my wife and two young girls, bringing up the next generation of Wooden Ships crew!

I have been working in Wooden Ships full time since 2012, learning more about boats and people every day.  Hopefully in another 40 years time I will have some of the encyclopaedic  knowledge my father Peter currently has!

My husband and I are the new owners of a Jeanneau 53 that was listed by Ancasta Barcelona. Starting in April 2025, we plan to sail 7 months out of the year in The Mediterranean and work 5 months here in The Netherlands. A hybrid sabbatical for a few years so to say.The boat was owned by Australians who we never met. Not something we’re used to here in The Netherlands. When we put our Dehler 39SQ up for sale last September, we met the interested parties during viewings (at their request) and we took them for short trial sails. Daily practice for you I’m sure, but a once in a lifetime experience for us most likely (we don’t expect to sell the boat in a few years while living on the other side of the world:).We put our own broker, on copy during the process, especially during the contract phase. Not once did Josiane give us the feeling that we were over-asking or being difficult. Her patient demeanor really made this a smooth process.I also want to take the opportunity to let you know that if it wasn't for Kostas Saltouridis, we would not have bought the boat at all. In my profession I know that good and genuine customer service can make a difference and Kostas definitely over-delivered.With a seller in Australia, we as buyers in The Netherlands and a broker in Barcelona, we started to doubt after the survey if buying that particular vessel was the smart thing to do. With no one on the ground in Greece we felt uncomfortable to try and find the right people remotely to work through the essential jobs that came out of the survey.Kostas noticed that however and stepped in. He offered to use his own expertise and local network of specialists to work through the most important repairs. After consultation with the seller we agreed to a plan and a timeline. By checking in with me daily and by sending through pictures and video's, he kept us informed on the progress. Last week I hopped over to Greece to go over all the jobs done by Kostas and his team. I had no comments so we made the last payment the day I got back.The seller in Australia isn't able to handover the boat to us so Kostas also took the time to explain all the electronics/equipment to me in detail which I video recorded for later "direction for use" references.We are waiting on some final paperwork after which we hope to launch the boat early August ready for new sailing adventures starting next year. We were looking for our next boat and had decided on a three-cabin flybridge. Ancasta Chichester was advertising a 1999 Princess 460 which looked like it could fit the bill, so we made an appointment to view. A long drive from our home in Essex to Chichester Marina to view the boat proved very fruitful, and after a fault-free sea trial and positive survey, we are now the proud owners of that vessel! After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. And as a buying customer I would feel confident buying through them so you would be more likely to sell to me!

NOSS ON DART MARINA

Set on the sunny eastern bank of the River Dart, in a secluded area of outstanding natural beauty and just minutes from Dartmouth, Noss on Dart Marina offers easy access to some of the most beautiful anchorages and ports in Devon. With leafy woodland walks along the Dart Valley Trail, an array of wildlife and a busy calendar of local festivals and regattas, there’s also a huge amount on offer on land in the nearby towns of Kingswear and Dartmouth.

Nearby attractions include National Trust, Greenway, holiday home of the much-loved author Agatha Christie and English Heritage, Dartmouth Castle with its breath-taking views across the Dart Estuary. The beauty of the River Dart can also be experienced on a river cruise, by taking the steam train along the coast, or by kayak or paddleboard.

This 37-acre site has a rich history of shipbuilding, dating back to the 1880s. It is best known for manufacturing Trinity Light vessels and minesweepers, as well as Chay Blyth’s British Steel round-the-world yacht, which was launched there in the 1970s.

Network Yacht Brokers Dartmouth is a small but highly effective team, having sold about 1000 boats since the business was formed here in Dartmouth in 2005 at Noss on Dart Marina, the site of the former Philip and Son Boat Yard.

James Hester (Director)

James joined Network Yacht Brokers Dartmouth in 2020, acquiring the business from Phil Howling, whose immense experience served to build an enviable reputation for the business.

James has a wealth of experience in leading and managing sales and purchase transactions, having enjoyed a diverse sales career in the world of finance. James’s ability to negotiate deals from the simple to the complex, and to guide clients through the legal as well as the human challenges to reach a successful outcome, stands him in excellent stead when it comes to handling boat sales. An enthusiastic yachtsman, James has experience both as a single-handed sailor and as a skipper to a variety of crew. He lives locally in Dartmouth, never far from the water.

James is qualified with a Diploma in Yacht Brokerage from the Maritime Training Academy, accredited by the University of Portsmouth, where he was awarded a Distinction grade.  He is also an Accredited Member of ABYA, the industry’s principle Trade Association, which underpins Network Yacht Brokers Dartmouth’s professional status as a reliable operator in the sector.

John Osborne (Yacht Broker)

With an honours degree in business, John also holds an Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA) qualification in yacht broking. Born and brought up in the South West and now living in Dartmouth, John has a deeprooted love of boating, inspired by many family holidays on the water and by spending his spare time on various motorboat renovation projects.

Jane Hester (Director/Administrator)

A teacher by profession, Jane works in a local school and supports the brokerage as an administrator. She also volunteers locally with the RNLI in their Visitor Centre.

Amanda has been sailing for 40 years, owning various boats and crewing on many long-distance deliveries. She has made transatlantic crossings and is an RYA Yachtmaster.

Brokerage boat of the month: Aalto, the high-volume yacht with an interior by iconic Parisian designers

Every month we place a spotlight on one of the best-designed brokerage boats that have joined the market, changed agents or have had a significant price drop. For August, the 80-metre yacht Aalto is our Brokerage Boat of the Month. 

Nuvolari Lenard was responsible for her exterior design, while iconic Parisian designers Agence Pinto worked up her interior. Aalto is listed for sale with multiple brokers for the Monaco Yacht Show , comprising Matt Pinckney at Burgess , Charles Carveles at Edmiston and James Pool at Y.CO. Her asking price is €79,750,000. 

BOAT's brokerage editor says:

Aalto sports a powerful exterior by Nuvolari Lenard that contains a high-volume 2,310GT interior, exquisitely finished and detailed by Paris-based Agence Pinto. Constructed in the Netherlands by Oceanco , she is packed with design features – including a stabilised pool table, heated pool, owner's suite with two Jacuzzis, circular skylights, circular indoor-outdoor dining room – while remaining gimmick-free and purposeful, with life rafts positioned outboard for safe automatic deployment.

The brokers say:

Burgess' Matt Pinckney said: "This Dutch-built yacht offers a unique chance to own a pedigree yacht at a fraction of current build costs." Y.CO's James Pool agreed, adding: " Aalto offers a great opportunity in today’s market to purchase a reputable Oceanco Y700 platform, commercially compliant and ready to go." The third joint central agent, Edmiston's Charles Carveles concluded: "As part of the Oceanco Y700 series, Aalto is a proven platform for both owner's use and charters worldwide – with one owner from new and benefiting from constant maintenance."

What makes her special?

Nuvolari Lenard's Dan Lenard exclusively told BOAT International that Aalto was the first of a range to use the Oceanco standard platform, named Y700. "This concept was new in the 80-metre-plus sector," he recalled, noting this was the first time that Aalto was based on a  "3D superstructure' design". "Before, Aalto designs were flat." The superstructure also had "portions of the side decks being wider than the hull’s maximum beam", which is now quite commonplace in the industry.

 "Her top deck pool was a daring step ahead on the outside deck design," he continued. "She marked Oceanco as an innovative and open-minded shipyard with a vision of pushing the bar, with every boat coming out of their sheds in the years to come." Her design followed the 81.3-metre Alfa Nero , which "introduced the stern pool", and the 85.5-metre Vibrant Curiosity , with a pool on the upper deck.

No expense was spared when it came to design details either, with Aalto originally decorated in 2007 by Agence Pinto under the artistic direction of the renowned designer Pietro Scaglione, who is famed for his maximalist extravagant interiors.

Thierry Seigle of Agence Pinto said: " Aalto is a floating masterpiece that embodies elegance and luxury in every detail of its design".  He added that Pinto "infused this vessel with a unique Art Deco ambience. Every space on board reflects the opulence and glamour of the 1920s, with noble materials, geometric patterns and rich colours creating a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere". Carefully selected works of art are found throughout, with splendid lounges, cabins and relaxation areas, including a billiard room, "which have been designed to offer guests absolute comfort". Summing up: "We can see that she has stood the test of time over the past 20 years."
