The superyacht “Dubai”

  • Tourist attractions in Dubai
  • Where can you find the superyacht "Dubai"

Dubai may not be like Monaco, where the harbor is filled with ultra-expensive superyachts, but the chances are high that you will encounter several massive yachts in Dubai. The largest yachts are mainly located in the harbor behind the Dubai Marina, next to the Skydive Dubai landing strip, and around the Palm Jumeirah island.

Of all the yachts in Dubai, one stands head and shoulders above the rest: the yacht of Dubai’s prominent leader, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This immense yacht, measuring 162 meters in length and carrying a price tag of around $400 million, bears the rather unimaginative name “Dubai” and ranks as the third-largest yacht in the world. Only the yacht owned by Roman Abramovich, the Eclipse (163.5 meters long), and the Azzam yacht (180 meters long) belonging to the President of the United Arab Emirates, are larger.

During its construction in 2006 and upon completion, the “Dubai” yacht was the largest in the world. Originally intended for the Prince of Brunei, who commissioned its construction in 1996 and named it Platinum, the construction came to a halt for unknown reasons. In 2001, the Sheikh of Dubai acquired the yacht and proceeded to complete its construction. Upon acquisition, the Sheikh promptly renamed the yacht to its apt name, “Dubai”.

Not only is the length of the “Dubai” yacht enormous, but its other statistics are also impressive. The yacht boasts eight decks, accommodating up to 115 guests plus 88 crew members, and can carry over 1 million liters of fuel. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 26 knots, equivalent to fifty kilometers per hour, the total weight of the yacht is 13.5 tons. The upper deck of the yacht features a helicopter platform where a helicopter can be stationed even while sailing. Below deck, there is an outdoor swimming pool complete with a jacuzzi and various sun decks.

The Dubai superyacht in Dubai

Where can you find the superyacht “Dubai”

When the yacht “Dubai” is at home in Dubai, chances are it is moored on the shores of the northern Logo Island or in the port of Jebel Ali. The Logo Islands are two identical islands located at the foot of the artificial Palm Jumeirah island. The shape of the islands is inspired by a palm leaf and is identical to the logo of Dubai Palm Developers. Both islands are privately owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and currently only the northern island is developed. On the island, there are, among other things, two enormous villas with a swimming pool, a helicopter platform, and a port.

From the mainland, you have the best view of the yacht. Both from the public beach Palace Beach, which is located between several palaces, and from Al Sufouh Road, you have a good view of the huge yacht and can take good photographs of it. If you drive onto Palm Jumeirah by car or take the Palm Jumeirah Monorail, you can see the yacht on your right if it is moored in its usual spot.

For the absolute best view of the superyacht, you have to get out on the water. Various boat tours depart from Dubai Marina, which not only pass through Dubai Marina but also along the Palm Jumeirah island and the Logo Islands. Those who prefer to explore the waters of Dubai on their own initiative can charter their own boat, possibly with a crew.

Motor Yacht

Launched in 2006 by Platinum Yachts, Dubai is the world’s second largest private yacht, measuring 162 metres. Dubai’s incredible size is disguised by the elegant lines of her steel hull and aluminium superstructure – the work of renowned designer Andrew Winch. Her stunning interior was designed by Platinum Yachts.

The construction of this megayacht began for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei more than 10 years before the yacht’s launch. The construction, then a joint project between Blohm + Voss and Lurssen shipyards, was halted until 2001 when the hull was acquired by Platinum Yachts for His Highness Sheik Mohammed Rashid al-Maktoum. The project, previously named Platinum, Panhandle and Golden Star, was re-named Dubai.

Dubai’s luxurious interior design blends bold colours with fine fabrics and intricately detailed handmade mosaics. A spectacular staircase creates Dubai’s showpiece. Bathed in natural light from the top deck, this dramatic circular staircase features glass steps, which change colour. Dubai’s spacious decks offer a split-level owner’s deck; a large social area including the main lounge with its centrepiece red sofa; numerous VIP and guest suites, and a crew area to accommodate 115 people including crew and guest staff.

With seven decks, Dubai has a wealth of sunbathing areas; a striking mosaic swimming pool and several Jacuzzis. She can accommodate a helicopter of up to 9.5 tonnes and can carry two 10-metre long tenders.

Dubai has a displacement of 9,150 tonnes, yet can reach an impressive 26 knots at maximum speed. She has exceptional worldwide capability with a range of 8,500 miles at 25 knots, powered by four MTU diesel engines.

Dubai was commissioned in 1995 under various project names ( Panhandle , Platinum , Golden Star ) and was built in cooperation with the German shipyards Blohm+Voss and Lürssen . [4]

The yacht was initially built for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei before 1996, but the client stopped the purchase contract the next year. [5]

In 2001, she went to the current owner, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. [6] The yacht was designed by Andrew Winch , with interior design by Platinum Yachts. She approximately cost $400 million U.S. dollars .

The ship including the floating dock was transported by the MV   Blue Marlin via Turkey to Dubai . The Dubai-based Platinum Yachts FZCO shipyard continued to build the yacht under the former project name Platinum and handed her over to the owner in 2006.

The yacht is kept in front of the northern of the two artificial islands, the private island of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

From 2006 to 2009, the yacht was the largest yacht in the world with a length of 162 meters, but was replaced by Eclipse and Azzam . [7]

The equipment includes a helipad up to a maximum of 9.5 tons, two 10 m long motor boats, a dining room for 90 guests and a 10 m swimming pool. The yacht also has a disco, a cinema, 20 water bikes, a submarine, a lobster tank and a squash court. Dubai is divided into eight decks and she provides space for up to 88 crew members and 115 guests. [8]

The four MTU-20V diesel engines can each deliver 6,301 kW and can give the ship a speed of up to 26 knots . With the 1.2 million litre diesel tanks, Dubai is able to travel 8,500 nautical miles .
