Series of three yacht races begin in Castine

CASTINE, Maine (WABI) - The 25th Annual Castine Classic Yacht Race kicks off a series of races along Maine’s Coast.

“I normally sail in this event. I’m not sailing today, but my husband is. This yacht race is the beginning of a three-part race, and it goes from Castine to Camden, stays overnight there and then it goes on from Castine to Brooklin, and then they stay overnight there, and then they do a portion of the race out of Woodenboat School . That’s called the ‘Egg Reach’, and they go around Eggemoggin Reach and they reach around and and start at the Woodenboat School,” explained Lauri Lyman, watching the race.

People gathered at Fort Madison to watch the race get started, some opted to paint.

“There might actually be somebody with a painting of us somewhere in a gallery somewhere in Downtown Castine. Who knows, but it’s a quintessential Maine day, including the rain. So, it’s a great time,” stated Kevin Brobson, watching the race.

“This is my second time as an artist in residence here and I love this town. Good for artists, lots of environments for painting,” said Viktor Butko , a resident artist painting at Fort Madison.

Many of those coming to watch seem to wish they were participating.

“It’s one of the most beautiful places to sail in the country. I think a lot of people feel it’s great competition. People come from all over, good camaraderie, and it does take skill. You have to read the wind; you have to read the tide. So, it’s a lot of fun,” added Lyman

“I sailed with some buddies up here for probably about 12, 14 years. We haven’t done it in a while, but we actually participated in the Eggemoggin Reach. That’s going to happen either tomorrow or the next day, The Wooden Boat Race. So, watching these boats get ready to go across the starting line and hearing the signal and trying to explain to my 16-year-old son everything that’s going through the mind of the crew is pretty exciting,” explained Brobson.

While it is a race, the first finisher may not necessarily be the winner.

“You could come across that finish line first, but if you’re rated differently, you have to give time back to a boat that may be behind you, and they may actually win the race. So, then you don’t know who won until everybody’s across the finish line,” Lyman clarified.

The race from Camden to Brooklin begins Friday and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta will be on Saturday.

More info about all three races can be found here .

Eggemoggin Reach

Eggemoggin Reach Regatta

Come morning, surrounded by gleaming varnish and shining brass, devout crews will hoist sails and be off for the Castine Classic Yacht Regatta. Over the course of 20 miles, a flotilla of wooden thoroughbreds will gallop, wind willing and with tender in tow, southwest along the granite shores of Isleboro, before rounding up and turning into Camden, where they’ll rest for the night.

By dawn, the fleet will have grown. On the grounds of the Camden Yacht Club, skippers will await a final blessing by the race committee before setting off from a point off North Haven, perhaps tacking, perhaps reaching through the rocky outcroppings and pine-speckled isles of the Deer Island Thoroughfare. It will be a pageant of sail as the boats cleave the harbor in Stonington and make the final run for the holy land: Eggemoggin Reach and the cove in Brooklin.

| | Castine Yacht Regatta Can there be a more eye-pleasing sailboat than the Concordia yawl? This year marks the 75th anniversary of the C. Raymond Hunt- and Waldo Howland-designed classics, and they will be belles of the ball at the Castine Classic Yacht Regatta, set for July 31 and August 1. For a list of festivities and race details, visit _ www.castineyachtclub.org_. |

As the setting sun casts late afternoon shadows, more sailboats — Herreshoffs, Concordias, Crockers and Aldens — will pour in, many accompanied by their own mother ships to house owners and crew.

Come Saturday, while dew dries on teak toerails, regatta co-founder Steve White of the Brooklin Boat Yard will gather the flock around him on shore. Soon cannons will blast and the race round Halibut Rocks — the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta — will be under way. As it should be. It’s August in Maine.

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series

Tuesday, june 8th 2021.

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series

Classic yacht racing has always been strong in Maine due to the state’s many world-class boatbuilders, yacht designers and the state’s gorgeous sailing waters. And this summer the competition will be fierce, as racing ramps up after last summer’s truncated season.

Also, in addition to a new race in Boothbay, there will be a new trophy for boats that compete in at least three classic yacht regattas. The Newport, RI-based Classic Yacht Owners Association has established Maine as its own District in a newly formed competition called the Classic Yachts Challenge Series. To win the Maine District Series, competitors need to race in three races in Maine in two separate Maine events. A goal of the District Championship Series is to give boats that can’t travel between districts the chance to be recognized. To qualify for the Overall Series Championship, an additional two races must be completed with one being in either the Massachusetts or NY/RI/CT districts. The Overall Championship series unites 13 prestigious classic yacht regattas from Long Island Sound to Eggemoggin Reach, Maine.

Maine’s classic racing season will start with the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge, July 24 and 25; followed by the Camden Classics Cup, July 29-31; the Castine Classic Yacht Race, August 5; and the Camden to Brooklin Feeder race on August 6. The Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, now in its 36 th  year and the regatta that started it all in Maine wraps up the Maine series on August 7. These are destination regattas. Every town puts out the welcome mat for these sailors and their crews.

The Maine District Champion and Overall Champion will be announced in the fall in Newport, RI at the CYOA awards ceremony. For more information of the Classic Yachts Challenge Series – https://www.classicyachts.org/series/

The membership-driven, nonprofit Classic Yacht Owners Association was established in 2015 to encourage fellowship amongst owners within the classic yacht community. One of the organization’s goals is to help shape the future of the sport by influencing and cultivating long-term regional cooperation amongst those who are dedicated to owning, maintaining, and racing sailing vessels. CYOA also works to promote classic yacht ownership with the objective of attracting new members and creating new funding opportunities to support future classic yacht events.

Summer Regattas

St Barths Sailing Regatta

And of all sailboat races, classic regattas – featuring vintage, wooden and Spirit of Tradition sailboats – are some of the most exciting to watch.

Not only are the classically styled yachts some of the most beautiful boats in the world, the racing is inspiring, conjuring up the spirit of yachting lore. In other words, attendees get treated to the best in summertime entertainment. The races are a thrill to watch, and the dockside social soirees, awards ceremonies and parties enable attendees to chat with New England’s finest yachtsmen. For yachters, there isn’t a better way to spend a summer weekend in New England.

Which sailing regattas should you attend? Worldwide Boat has the insider’s scoop on some of New England’s most prestigious summer sailboat races. Try to make it to a few – and of course, a sailboat charter for race day offers the best seat to take in all the thrilling action.

Classic Regattas to Catch every Summer

1. Vineyard Cup – Martha’s Vineyard, MA – (July)

Held in Martha’s Vineyard, this regatta features more than 100 participating yachts, and a full slate of races over three days. The event – which was launched in 2006 – is sponsored by Sail MV, and it’s quickly become one of New England’s premier regattas. Not only is the racing spectacular, attendees can enjoy a wide range of onshore events. Although this isn’t strictly a classic regatta – there many different classes of boats and races courses – the Vineyard Cup is a must-see for classic yacht enthusiasts.

2. Castine to Camden Yacht Race – Castine, ME – (August)

The Castine Classic Yacht Race – part of three days of regattas in the 2018 Wooden Boat Series – takes place in Maine’s stunning Penobscot Bay, an inlet in the Gulf of Maine. Specked with islands more than 200 miles and spectacular harbors, the bay offers the best in Maine yachting. The Castine to Camden race puts yachters on a 20-mile course across the Bay, from Castine to Camden. Castine Yacht Club, the race’s sponsor, opens the regatta to classic and Spirit of Tradition monohulls over 28’.

3. Camden Classic Yacht Regatta – Camden, ME – (August)

For more than 30 years, classic yachts have gathered at the Camden Yacht Club for the annual Camden Classic Regatta. Featuring a challenging 15+ mile course, the yacht runs from Camden to Brooklin, ME. This, along with the Castine and Eggemoggin races, make up a wonderful three days of classic yacht racing on Penobscot Bay.

4. Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta – Marblehead, MA – (August)

Corinthian is a name synonymous with New England sailing. For more than 125 years, the Corinthian Yacht Club has called Marblehead, MA home, and in that time, they’ve produced numerous racing champions including several America’s Cup defenders. The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta was started nearly 40 years ago, and it’s become of the largest celebrates of “classic yachts and characters.” Just as speculator as the racing, though, is the onshore atmosphere, another compelling reason to go.

5. Nantucket Race Week – Nantucket, MA – (August)

Nantucket Race Week runs for nine days in mid-August, and features races in numerous classes. Yet, one of the week’s most exciting races is the Nantucket Regatta (held on August 18). The race was first run in 1930, but recently underwent restructuring in 2016. Open to 24+ foot classic wooden yachts, the regatta is part of the North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Series. And it’s certainly one race you will want to catch during the week.

6. Opera House Cup – Nantucket, MA – (August)

The Opera House Cup is the oldest classic sailboat race on the East Coast, having started more than 40 years ago in 1973. A joy to watch, the Opera House Cup draws a fleet up roughly 100 vintage yachts – offering a unique look at many different styles of classic boats.

7. Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta – Bristol, RI – (August)

The Herreschoff Regatta – held each year in Bristol, RI – was named after the Herreschoff Manufacturing Company, a storied yacht builder that produced several America’s Cup defenders. In fact, many classic yachts feature Herreschoff designs. The classic regatta – part of the Panerai Series – takes place in the picturesque Narragansett Bay on Friday, with its sister race the Newport Classic taking place on Saturday. Throughout the weekend, attendees are welcomed to cocktail hours, expos and plenty to see and do.

8. Newport Classic Yacht Regatta – Newport, RI – (August)

Newport is a classic New England yachting town – one of the largest yacht charter ports in New England. And with its long history in sailing, it makes sense Newport is one to one of the East Coast’s most exciting classic regattas. Since 1980, the Newport Classic race has taken place in the southern reaches of Narragansett Bay. Part of the Narragansett Bay Classic Yacht Rendezvous – along with the Herrschoff – the race starts from Bristol to Newport, followed by racing near Newport.

9. Indian Harbor Yacht Club Classic Yacht Regatta – Greenwich, CT – (September)

A recent addition to the classic regatta summer series, the Indian Harbor Classic Regatta takes place on Long Island Sound. The regatta’s sponsor – Greenwich, CT’s Indian Harbor Yacht Club – opens the race to classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts, and hosts awards dinners, cocktail hours and parties throughout the weekend.
