Standing ovation for Frank Mulder, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards.

frank mulder yacht design

Frank Mulder, the celebrated naval architect behind the iconic Octopussy, was honored with the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2024 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards. The prestigious event unfolded in Kitzbuhel on Sunday, January 28, 2023. If you’re interested in delving deeper into the remarkable journey of Frank Mulder and the creation of Octopussy, you can explore the documentary capturing this momentous occasion.

BOAT International recognises a member of the superyacht design community every year with this honour. Previous recipients of this award include Tim Heywood, Martin Francis, Frits De Voogt, and other notable names in the industry.

Mulder has over 1,000 designs that have come to life, with many fast Heesen yachts from the 80s being part of his portfolio. He had already designed six yachts for our shipyard, including Tropic C (now Sea Axis), when John Staluppi, an American entrepreneur, approached him to design the fastest motor yacht in the world, which he wanted built around three MTU engines he had purchased.

Other notable Heesen yachts that sport Mulder’s signature include Wheels, Mirage, Bonita and Teeth, Lady Christine, Obsessions, and Blouzy.

Cecile Gauert, co-chair of the Design and Innovation Awards, praised Mulder as “a great naval architect, a true Dutchman, who was very much addicted to speed for many years. He is the right person to go to if you want to be sure your boat goes extra fast.”

Steward Campbell, editor-in-chief of BOAT International, commented: “Mulder is associated with John Staluppi’s need for speed. It takes a hell of naval architecture knowledge to deliver the numbers he was able to deliver over the years.”

It’s truly inspiring to see the yachting industry recognise and celebrate the exceptional talent of designers like Frank. At Heesen, we’re fortunate to have Frank among the great designers who have contributed to the success of our shipyard.

Frank Mulder receives lifetime achievement award.

frank mulder yacht design

Dutch naval architect and yacht designer Frank Mulder was presented with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award. It was made during a Design and Innovation Awards program. In making the award the judges noted the breadth and scope of his designs. And his skill as designing exceptional yachts in all construction materials.

After earning his degree from the prestigious Haarlem University, Mulder landed a spot as a production manager at Amels Shipyard in 1974. Soon after that he moved to Damen Group. There he was in charge of the high-speed vessel program for military and commercial ships.

Naval architect for Damen

Frank Mulder’s professional background began with working in a shipyard Amels. There, his “office” was a niche in the wall of a construction shed. And his first job out of university in 1974 was as Assistant Yard Manager scheduling production. Two years later he was offered a post as a naval architect by Damen. And he was made head of its high-speed division for military and commercial craft. Three years after that, he made the brash decision at age 28 to quit the safety of a career at Damen. He opened his own studio . That type of “sink or swim” decision is characteristic of Frank Mulder.

frank mulder yacht design

The yacht that brought him global attention came one years later. Octopussy , built for US auto dealer John Staluppi.

Octopussy , was not the first superyacht Frank Mulder had designed.  He had already done six yachts at Heesen when Octopussy began in 1989. His studio was doing navy and customs boats for Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong when Frans Heesen called in 1984 and asked for help on a small job. Then came an order for the Tropic C .

First round bilge, semi-planning yacht

Tropic C was a custom, 36.9m aluminium tri-deck yacht with a fishing cockpit at the stern and a flying bridge. Five staterooms and four crew cabins accommodated 11 guests and 8 crew. Frank Mulder’s first round-bilge semi-displacement yacht, her top speed was 20 knots. This was followed by 34m Wheels in 1987, Mulder’s first round bilge, semi-planning yacht.

frank mulder yacht design

The Octopussy project began with a phone call.  Frank Mulder was  in his office when John Staluppi called him.  Frank Mulder recalls “His first question was, “Can you design a yacht that goes 50 knots?” I was on the spot and I said, “Let me look into this and I will call back soon”. I calles him back after one hour and said: “Yes. I can” John arrived next morning in Amsterdam accompanied by his captain and the same question, could I design a yacht that would go faster than the King of Spain’s Fortuna ? It was clear that he wanted a full yacht of 120 to 140 feet and not just a racing boat. He wanted a firm answer in two weeks.”

Netherlands

Design , project management , exterior designers , naval architects, www.mulderdesign.nl/.

It’s our pleasure to introduce you to our studio Mulder Design, which was founded by Frank Mulder in 1979. Bas Mulder joined the company in 2000, and the two have worked in close partnership ever since – along with a first-class team of design specialists, naval architects and engineers.

In addition to the sense of continuity that a family-run business offers, we love the fact that we get to partner with so many different shipyards and owners around the world. Every yard has its own modus operandi, something that has proven hugely inspirational while also providing us with the broadest possible knowledge base.

While holistic design is our forte, we’re equally happy to partner with another exterior design company and provide just the naval architecture for the project, or to style and design a yacht for a yard which already has naval architecture capacity in-house. However you choose to keep us busy, we see our work more as a vocation than an occupation. This is our life and we’re all in it together as a family.

MYS 2013: Interview with Frank Mulder of Mulder Design

Mulder design , a netherland-based studio founded by frank mulder in 1979, is an independent company specializing in the design and engineering of luxury motor yachts..

Mulder has built itself a reputation as high-speed yacht designers, having produced some of the fastest on the water including Moonraker, Blue Velvet, Octopussy, and The World Is Not Enough.

On a smaller level, the studio also creates semi-displacement and displacement luxury motor yachts. Not only does Mulder Design produce design and engineering drawings, but also monitors progress throughout the building process.

Key amongst the philosophy of the team is the belief that a custom-designed yacht be a reflection of the owner’s lifestyle and personality. Owners are constantly encouraged to involve themselves in the design process so as to achieve the desired result of a "Mulder Design" with a personal touch.

We sat down with Frank Mulder of Mulder Design at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show to discuss the company’s new 45-metre Vulcan motoryacht project, the future of yacht design, and much more.

mulder yachts fifty concept

Mulder Fifty: Mulder Yachts reveals flagship model

Dutch shipyard Mulder Yachts has revealed a new 49.95-metre addition to its fleet, hailing from its main production facility in Zoeterwoude. An evolution of its popular ThirtySix model, the new Mulder Fifty design follows a "four generations" design philosophy that prioritises the perspective of the owner.

The model was revealed during Mulder Yachts' 85th anniversary, a celebration attended by approximately 90 Mulder owners. Speaking with BOAT International , CEO Nick Mulder explained that the concept builds on the shipyard's heritage while "showing [its] ambition and where [it] wants to go, which is fifty metres". The new model also fills a gap in the Dutch shipbuilding segment for 50-metre plus semi-custom boats.

The yard will borrow "engineered elements" from the ThirtySix to control production costs and continue working with her preferred suppliers. In terms of design, Mulder has built on popular features of the ThirtySix while making the exterior – credited to Frank Laupman of Omega Architects – more accentuated and contemporary. The 499 GT yacht is defined by tapered aft overhangs – featuring knuckles for an elegant and interesting touch – a rounded, near-vertical bow and windows and trapezium-shaped side boards to carry the roof.

"When trying to develop a new, bigger version of the Mulder ThirtySix, it wasn't the case of just adding a few metres. We're looking at it from an owner's perspective because we are owners," Mulder explained. "The 36-metre has everything you need, so I was thinking – what would be the real difference if you go bigger? I think you really need to have an elevator, particularly for the elderly and great-grandparents. You look at it differently when you're a father. That's how I came up with the four-generation idea."

Mulder Fifty's "four generations" philosophy manifests as a versatile, family-friendly interior arrangement. The standout feature is the atrium, featuring an elevator which, located in the heart of the vessel, allows guests to easily move between decks. There is the option of six or seven cabins, with the possibility of having a sky lounge or a seventh cabin on the aft wheelhouse deck. There will be further accommodation for a crew of 11.

The open-plan foredeck can be tailored to specific owner's requirements. A spacious saloon will feature the signature central bar arrangement and the full-beam skylounge, which would optically connect with the triangular mast and benefit from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Up top, there would be an enclosed 75-square-metre sundeck (covered by a sunroof) and an interpretation of the classic Mulder "windswept" mast. It would also be arranged with a Jacuzzi, sunpads and a cocktail bar with ample seating, including forward-facing observation seating.

With direct access from the main aft deck, there will be a beach club with a three-metre-long swim platform for sunbathing near water level and a gymnasium.

According to BOATPro , Mulder Yachts has two units in its ThirtySix series currently under construction.

NA – PAST: Building Good Boats from the Bottom Up

Building good boats from the bottom up.

An interview with Frank Mulder

Frank Mulder’s professional background began with working in a shipyard – Amels – where his “office” was a niche in the wall of a construction shed and his first job out of university in 1974 was as Assistant Yard Manager scheduling production. Two years later he was offered a post as a naval architect by Damen and made head of its high-speed division for military and commercial craft. Three years after that, he made the brash decision at age 28 to quit the safety of a career at Damen and open his own studio. That type of “sink or swim” decision is characteristic of the senior Mulder.

Oude MD-foto’s-Appeldijk op de werkvloer

Q: Looking back, did you ever feel typecast as a fast boat specialist? FM: “It is fair to talk about me as a high-speed designer, our fast boats got us in the door and got us noticed. However, we have done many more moderate-speed boats.

Q: Many people think your first superyacht was Octopussy, but it wasn’t, was it? FM: No, we had already done six yachts at Heesen when Octopussy began in 1989. My studio was doing navy and customs boats for Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong when Frans Heesen called in 1984 and asked for help on a small job. Then came an order for the Tropic C.

Tropic C was a custom, 36.9m aluminium tri-deck yacht with a fishing cockpit at the stern and a flying bridge. Five staterooms and four crew cabins accommodated 11 guests and 8 crew. Mulder’s first round-bilge semi-displacement yacht, her top speed was 20 knots. This was followed by 34m Wheels in 1987, Mulder’s first round bilge, semi-planning yacht.

Q: Octopussy began with a phone call from a sales executive at MTU about a client who had bought three high-horsepower engines and wanted the world’s fastest yacht built around them. How did you approach the design? FM: I was in my office when John Staluppi called me. His first question was, “Can you design a yacht that goes 50 knots?” I was on the spot and I said, “Let me look into this and I will call back soon”. I calles him back after one hour and said: “Yes. I can” John arrived next morning in Amsterdam accompanied by his captain and the same question, could I design a yacht that would go faster than the King of Spain’s Fortuna? It was clear that he wanted a full yacht of 120 to 140 feet and not just a racing boat. He wanted a firm answer in two weeks.

ca97f760-6d45-11eb-8655-336a6661ce2c-2ladies-rossinavi-03

Q: Has the advance in materials changed your design process? FM: Not so much. Design should always be done and completed on paper before someone starts cutting metal or fibreglass. We started into composites with Moonraker launched in 1992 at Norship. We never felt that composites were a risk for yachts that would do over 30 knots, many passenger ferries do that. Carbon fibre is a different thing altogether. I see boats with carbon fibre superstructures, but it is so stiff, so much stiffer than glass reinforced composites, that it's best to do the whole boat out of it. But why? It is many times more expensive and what do you save for it? A couple less support pillars? For regattas, it’s important, but that’s not our market.

Octopussy-by-Heesen

Q: Then came one of the most interesting contracts in superyachting. FM: I told him I thought it could be done but I would need six weeks to design and test it. If the tests say it can be done, you have to build it. If it can’t be done, he would have to pay me $65,000 for the tank testing and my time.

The rest is history and Mulder’s Deep V forward sections transitioning hard, lifting chines and a planning aft section with three 3,500hp engines all driving KaMeWa water jets gave rise to what was known as the Jet Squadron, a pack of highspeed superyachts that defined a trend in the early 1990s. Mulder Design, under the leadership of Bas Mulder, is working on the third refit of this iconic yacht.

Q: Mulder works on commercial projects as well as small production boats and custom yachts – 1,000 vessels all totalled. Is there a signature Mulder hull? FM: I get asked all the time, “What is the best hull design?” That is the biggest mistake you can make. We work on what design is best for the project as a whole. It doesn’t matter if it is a yacht where the balance is between luxury and mechanical space or on commercial vessels where it is the size of the hold vs. the engine room. You need to be flexible for the project, now they call it holistic design. You have to think about the yacht from all perspectives – the chef, the engineer, the owner, to the yard. Don’t design something where the yard had to hang a guy upside-down to weld it.

Mulder Design -Frank-bureau-1

Q: Where have the biggest changes in naval architecture come from? FM: Computers. In 1970, I bought a 1K programmable computer and used it for 10 years. We kept upgrading when new tools came out but Octopussy, for example, was drawn by hand. All the drafting was done in the yard by hand. I was the first to buy a MaxSurf in Holland in 1989, then we started designing in 3D. Moonraker’s superstructure was designed in Maxsurf in 1991. I printed out the pieces on polyester one-to-one scale and mailed them to the yard in Norway. I’ve spent 35 years behind a computer.
