Review of Halcyon 27

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 2 cabins and 4 berths.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Halcyon 27 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.22 - 1.32 meter (4.00 - 4.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Halcyon 27 is typically equipped with a Wickström gasoline engine at 7 hp (5 kW). Calculated max speed is about 3.4 knots.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Halcyon 27 is 1.60, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Halcyon 27 is about 95 kg/cm, alternatively 535 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 95 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 535 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 13.03

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 11m 2 (118 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Whay do you knpow about these boats? Interestedin a 1973 version for long distance cruising. Any info welcomed- thanks

HenryB

I owned one for about 14 years and cruised Cornwall, Scillies, France and Northern Spain. They are very tough and seaworthy. I always felt safe, even in quite rough seas. Bear in mind though that they are quite small compared to a modern 27 footer. Mine was a 1969 model and was fitted with a 8 HP SABB motor with variable pitch prop. This was totally reliable and made an excellent motor sailing engine but lacked the power to make much headway into rough seas. I can't recollect having to replace anything due to wear and tear in all the time that I owned her. Hope this helps, Henry

I had a halcyon 23 for 5 seasons and did 2500 miles overall down channel and round thames estuary. Loved her to bits but 23' really much too small for long term cruising. Have heard v good things about the 27' and they have been used a lot for cruising. Visit the OOffshore Yachts Class Owners assn (OYCOA) webiste (if it is still exisiting) www.oycoa.org.uk . Their latest newsletter has a good story of a delivery of an H27 from the East coast to Scilly. Besides all teh standard things on on any boat: a) has she got a newer engine thatn 1973?! b) Halcyons historically are weak at the deck/hull join and can leak there. Check v carefully and consider costs of remediation c) lots of them were painted in duckegg blue, which fades to a unrepeatable colour - it can't be matched ... this may not be an issue on the boat you're looking at. Best of luck
Sarah&Pip

Boat is for 18 year old to go off in- agree boat is quite small inside but seems ok for 1-2 youngsters. I understand they sail well but have been told they can be a bit tender- what do you think? Any problems with the hull? The one we are interested in has been regelcoated-red-and I am wondering if that is to hide anything. Thanks for your help.

Mine had been regelcoated by the previous owner. I was very suspicious of this as it seemed very unusual but I had no problems. It also was never fitted with an anode which again seems odd but nothing wore away nor dropped off so it couldn't have been needed. They are on the "tender" side - i.e. they heel a lot, so remember to take in a reef early - you will go just as fast, in more comfort. We cruised a lot with 4 on board, 2 adults and our 2 children who were in their teens. This wasn't a problem while the weather was good but I must admit that is wasn't a lot of fun when it was wet. When I bought mine it seemed to be the best that I could get for serious cruising for the money and I guess that still is the case. Regards, Henry

Had one for 11 years and cruised extensively Scottish West Coast with wife and two kids. Devastated when she was sunk by new owners...By the way there is an anode within the heat exchanger on Sabb 8hp.

well we've put in an offer subject to survey and fingers crossed- if all goes well daughter intends to leave school next week and move aboard! I am wondering if we are doing the right thing now!!!!!!

  • 10 Jun 2003

I moved aboard my boat at 16 years old, it was a Sadler 25, a great boat. I'm sure she is doing the right thing. Ellen Mac's Auntie had a Halcyon 27 and that's what inspired her, you must have read the book by now...

If it does not work out see the Halcyon big brother bellow! Paul
Paul http://www.polarity2.com/Clipper.htm

If your purchase does not work out you might like to consider my Halcyon CLIPPER 27 (also by Offshore yachts). The CLIPPER has bigger accomodation than the Halcyon 27 (due to very small side decks) It has a Fin keel. You can view my boat at www.billdick.btinternet.co.uk
BillD

Sorry- daughter has now bought halcyon 27 and is currently living onboard preparing for the BOG ADVENTURE- circumnavigation. Good luck with selling your boat!

Broker's Comments

The Halcyon 27 was designed and built in the classic tradition, with a deep long keel and tough construction, capable of offshore cruising. These yachts are known for their seaworthy cruising capabilities and good performance in all conditions.

There appears to have been some previous investment made in the boat, including refurbishment of the engine, electrics and wiring, rudder and skin fittings and more. Although she requires standing and running rigging replacing, some tidying and work to finish the project, she has great potential to bring back this classic yacht to a capabale cruiser.

Halcyon Clipper 26

Halcyon Clipper 26 is a 26 ′ 2 ″ / 8 m monohull sailboat designed by Alan Buchanan and built by Offshore Yachts Ltd. starting in 1971.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
