Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop Boat Review

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • Updated: April 1, 2021

Mag Bay Yachts 42 running at sunset

The DNA of Mag Bay Yachts’ new 42 dates back to the early 1990s. Though the company was started in 2014 by the father-son team of Mike and Barrett Howarth, they were also the family that founded the vaunted Cabo Yachts line of diesel-powered sportfishers in 1991.

Yet Mag Bay’s inaugural model, the 33 Center Console, bears little resemblance to a Cabo, leading the offshore sport-fishing world to believe that the Howarths had committed to the booming center-console segment. The 42 dispels that notion, as this new express-style sportfisher reflects much of the heritage of the original Cabo line. You could say that the Mag Bay DNA reflects a good amount of genetic diversity.

That made me all the more curious to climb aboard the 42, an opportunity that occurred as I joined Barrett Howarth for a test run of this model in the Pacific waters off of Newport Beach, California.

Mag Bay 42 coackpit coamings and livewell

Boat of Details

“I call it a boat of details because we focus on building everything, even the smallest items, to the highest craftsmanship standards possible,” said Howarth, as we began our tour of the Mag Bay 42.

That became clearly evident as I examined details like the flawless bilge rigging, a specially designed compartment for the washdown spigots and shower hoses, and another that hides long-handled items such as deck brushes, boat hooks and gaffs.

Though teak covering boards and decking are available as part of the custom build process, my test boat featured an all-fiberglass cockpit. Smoothly rounded cockpit coamings are gentle on legs and help eliminate the need for padded bolsters. Diamond nonskid ensures traction on a wet deck, and below the cockpit sole, I discovered a pair of 70-gallon, guttered fish lockers.

In the middle of the transom resides an 80-gallon pressurized livewell with toe space below and a curved, aquarium-style viewing window. A beefy, outward opening tuna door in the starboard quarter lets you slide aboard big, heavy fish.

A three-step companionway leading to the helm deck splits the mezzanine seating in the forward cockpit. I found abundant dry storage under the seating, as well as below the elevated deck at the foot of the benches. The entire helm deck hinges upward at the push of a button to access the immaculate rigging in the engine room with its twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D-13 turbo-diesel inboards, Onan 13.5 kW generator, standard Seakeeper 6 gyro-stabilizer and other systems.

I measured 6 feet of headroom when I stepped down inside to get a sense of what it would be like to service the boat’s engines and ZF transmission.

Two Versions

You can custom order the 42 as an open, sport express model or with an integrated hardtop, like the one I tested. Both versions feature wraparound glass windshields to protect the bridge deck, which features an L-shaped settee stretching across the aft bulkhead and extending forward on the port side.

The integral hardtop is supported entirely by the windshield-frame structure, with no supports for the portion that cantilevers aft, giving this top a sleek appearance. It also includes a retractable sunroof to usher in light and fresh air. My test boat also featured a rack of 10 rod holders lining the aft edge.

A tackle center with cabinets, drawers, spool racks, shelves and tackle boxes occupies the starboard side of the bridge deck. It also houses an icemaker.

The test boat’s expansive helm featured a pair of Garmin 24-inch multifunction touchscreen displays. A flip-open compartment to port conceals but allows immediate access to dedicated displays and controls for systems such as the Seakeeper, SidePower thruster joystick, autopilot, windlass and more. The entire dash module easily hinges upward if you need to inspect or service the rigging. A trio of adjustable helm seats cradles the captain and two companions in comfort.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 salon

First Cabin

A pocket door on the starboard side of the bridge leads down to the salon and galley area, which offers 7 feet of headroom and a bright, airy feeling thanks to skylights and side windows, as well as overhead LED lighting. Wood cabinetry and decking lent a rich look to the quarters below deck on my test boat.

An L-shaped settee spans the aft bulkhead and port side, while the galley occupies the starboard area. It features a long granite countertop with tiled backsplash, cooktop and stainless-steel sink. Above is a microwave and below is a 190-cubic-inch Isotherm fridge/freezer.

The enclosed head is also to the starboard side, boasting 6 feet, 8 inches of headroom, a vanity and sink, standup shower and electric-flush commode. The salon also features a media locker for controlling the onboard audio system and other entertainment electronics.

Forward, through a central passageway, lies the master stateroom with a queen-size, elevated island berth, wood accents, overhead LEDs and a portlight hatch for illumination and fresh air. Teak cabinets above the berth store clothing items and other gear.

Accommodations belowdecks make the 42 a great boat for overnight trips, be it canyons in the Northeast, oil rigs in the upper Gulf of Mexico or multiday trips to the islands.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 cruising offshore

Performance

With 2,000 ponies pushing this 42,000-pound sportfisher, the Mag Bay 42 delivers plenty of get-up-and-go. You feel the power kick in 3 to 4 seconds after hammering the throttles as turbo-chargers spool up.

During my test, we jumped on plane in 9.5 seconds, and accelerated to 30 mph in 14.6 seconds. Top speed clocked in at 44.6 mph and 2,350 rpm, where the twin diesels burned 100 gallons per hour for 0.45 mpg. I recorded cruising fuel economy of 0.60 mpg at 1,900 rpm and 35.1 mph.

Trolling valves in the ZF transmissions let you reduce speed to as low as 2.6 mph for slow-trolling live bait. Without the trolling valves, the lowest trolling speed I could achieve was about 8.7 mph.

The handling and seakeeping of the Michael Peters-designed hull proved nothing less than stellar. Though the water laid flat on test day, I attacked the wakes created by large boats in the area, and the 42 sliced smoothly through the mess. It cornered with confidence at speed, and the Optimus electro-hydraulic steering system eased the task of controlling the rudders.

At low speed, with judicial use of the throttle, I could easily spin the 42 within its own length. The Mag Bay backs down confidently and cleanly, and in the calm waters of my test, did not take a hint of green water over the transom.

Just as Cabo quickly ascended to the top, it appears that the same DNA will propel Mag Bay Yachts to angling prominence, as evidenced by the quality, fishing features and performance of the new 42.

2021 Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • Updated: May 16, 2021

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop running off the beach

The lineage behind Mag Bay Yachts has coursed through three decades of sport-fishing boat history. The family that founded this brand—Mike and Barrett Howarth—also lays claim, along with Henry Mohrschladt, to the launch of the vaunted Cabo Yachts in 1991.

With the introduction of the Mag Bay 42, the Howarths reignited the spirit of Cabo Yachts, not in name, but by incorporating marine technologies that make the Mag Bay 42 an even better offshore fishing boat than the original Cabos.

“I call it a boat of details,” Barrett says. “We focus on building everything, even the smallest items, to the highest craftsmanship standards possible.” Indeed, I could not help but think of the quality of the early Cabos while examining the Mag Bay’s flawless bilge rigging, a specially designed compartment for the washdown spigots and shower hoses, and another that hides long-handled items such as deck brushes, boat hooks and gaffs.

This boat comes in two versions: an open sport express or with an integrated hardtop like the one I tested. The hardtop is supported entirely by the windshield frame structure, with the aft portion cantilevering over the cockpit for a sleek appearance. A retractable sunroof ushers in fresh air. A rack of 10 rod holders lined the aft edge on my tester.

Interior and Accessories

On the bridge deck, I discovered an L-shaped settee that stretches across the aft bulkhead and extends forward on the port side. A tackle center occupies the starboard side, with cabinets, drawers, spool racks, shelves and tackle boxes to stow a plethora of lures, leader material, terminal tackle and rigging tools. It also houses an ice maker.

The expansive helm featured a pair of Garmin 24-inch multifunction displays for sonar, radar and other onboard systems. A flip-open compartment to port allows access to dedicated displays and controls for systems such as the standard Seakeeper 6 gyrostabilizer, Side-Power thruster joystick, autopilot and windlass. The entire dash module easily hinges upward to service the rigging. A trio of adjustable helm seats cradle the captain and two companions.

Diamond nonskid ensures traction on a wet deck, and below the cockpit sole, I discovered a pair of 70-gallon guttered fish lockers. An 80-gallon pressurized livewell resides in the middle of the transom, with toe space below and a curved viewing window. A beefy, outward-opening tuna door in the starboard quarter lets you slide aboard heavy fish. Mezzanine seating in the forward cockpit includes abundant dry storage underneath.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop helm

From the cockpit, you can push a button to hinge open the helm deck to access the engine room with its twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 turbo-diesel inboards, Onan 13.5 kW generator and Seakeeper. I found 6 feet of headroom and good access to the boat’s engines and ZF transmissions.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop transom livewell in cockpit

There’s supreme comfort, starting with the salon and galley area, accessible via a step-down companionway from the bridge deck. I measured 7 feet of headroom and enjoyed the bright, airy atmosphere provided by skylights and side windows, as well as overhead LED lighting. Wood cabinetry and decking lend a rich look to the quarters belowdecks.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop galley kitchen

An L-shaped settee spans the aft bulkhead and port side, while the galley occupies the starboard area, with a granite countertop, tiled backsplash, cooktop and stainless-steel sink. Above is a microwave, and below is a 190-cubic-inch Isotherm fridge and freezer. The enclosed head is also to the starboard side, boasting 6 feet, 8 inches of headroom, a vanity and sink, stand-up shower and electric-flush commode. A central passageway leads forward to the master stateroom, with a queen-size, elevated island berth, wood accents, overhead LEDs, and portlight hatch for fresh air. Teak cabinets above the berth stow clothing items and other gear.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop enclosed head

Want to comparison-shop? Look closely at the Tiara 43 Open ($1,128,900 with twin Cummins 715 hp QSM 11 diesel inboards) with an extra foot of length than the Mag Bay 42. The Tiara’s salon is smaller, but there’s an extra private berth in addition to the main stateroom.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop berth

The 42 is no slouch when it comes to handling. The Michael Peters-designed hull proved stellar. The boat sliced smoothly through waves and cornered with confidence at speed. The Optimus electro-hydraulic steering system eased the task of controlling the rudders. At low speed, with judicial use of the throttle, I could easily spin the 42 within its own length. The Mag Bay backs down confidently and cleanly, and in the calm waters of test day, it did not take a hint of green water over the transom.

Mag Bay Yachts 42 Hardtop engine room access

The turbochargers of the Volvo Penta D13s spool up quickly, propelling the 42 to plane in 9.5 seconds and to 30 mph in 14.6 seconds. We achieved a top speed of 44.6 mph and 2,350 rpm. I recorded a best cruising fuel economy of 0.6 mpg at 1,900 rpm and 35.1 mph. Trolling valves in the ZF transmissions let you reduce speed to as low as 2.6 mph for slow-trolling live bait.

Annapolis Sailboat Show: The Biggest Sailing Party of the Year

mag bay yachts 42

The Annapolis Sailboat Show is a place to connect with sailors from all over.

Nestled on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis has long been a pilgrimage site for sailors. Dubbed America’s Sailing Capital, the city’s narrow streets are steeped with a maritime legacy that spans over three centuries. Its skyline has a unique dynamism, typified by an ever-renewing assortment of masts and the domes of the Naval Academy Chapel and State House.

The Annapolis Sailboat Show (October 10-14, 2024) was born out of this nautical fervor more than 50 years ago. Today, it stands as the largest in-water sailboat show in the world, serving as the venue for manufacturers to unveil their newest boats and drawing attendees from around the globe.

In addition to being the best place to see the newest in boats, electronics, gear, and other sailing-related offerings, the Annapolis Sailboat Show is a rendezvous for sailors from around the world, the biggest sailing party of the year. Attendees are encouraged to don their shorts, grab a drink, tour the floating docks, and hop aboard any boat that strikes their fancy (including the Baltimore clipper ship replica, the Pride of Baltimore II ).

mag bay yachts 42

On shore, there’s a boating bazaar to explore with vendors offering everything from life jackets and rigging to handcrafted navigational tools and artisanal bourbon. With downtown Annapolis only a few steps from the showgrounds, foodies will be spoiled too—seafood lovers especially. October brings the start of fall oyster season on the Chesapeake, and there’s no shortage of other local delicacies. Softshell crab sandwiches, claws and all, are an experience all their own.

For those with a less adventurous palate, there is a variety of American, Thai, Italian, and sushi restaurants to choose from. You can find a tavern where George Washington drank and a taco bar serving margaritas, all within walking distance of the show.

Naturally, though, the stars of the show are the sailboats. Close to 200 sailboats are expected to be featured at this year’s show: daysailers, dinghies, monohulls, multihulls, bluewater cruisers, racing skiffs, and more. Given the size and prestige of the Annapolis Sailboat Show, it’s not surprising that so many manufacturers premier their new boats there . This year’s show will be hosting the premier of the Dufour 44, Windelo 54, Allures 51.9. and Garcia Exploration 52, just to name a few.

mag bay yachts 42

Whether they’re looking for a new boat or just window shopping, attendees can board any vessel and talk with the manufacturers, designers, or dealers. The best part of being at the Annapolis Sailboat Show is the people you meet and the expertise they bring with them. You’re liable to run into anybody from America’s Cup sailors to circumnavigators; not just at the show, but at the local bars in the evening too. The show has been bringing sailors together for over half a century, so many people treat it as an annual get-together. And, with such an outgoing group, it’s an easy tradition to fall into.

One of the sailboat show’s draws for visitors is that it’s easy to get to. Annapolis City Dock, the home of the show, is just an easy 30-minute drive from Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) and just over an hour from Reagan National and Washington Dulles International. For those coming by boat, Annapolis is less than 130 miles from the mouths of the Chesapeake and Delaware bays with moorings and marina slips within walking distance of the showgrounds.

Accommodations are also easy to come by. There are historic hotels close to the show as well as the standard fare of chains and short-term rentals.

With over 500 exhibitors, free daily seminars from industry experts, and easy access to America’s Sailing Capital, there’s something for every type of sailor at the Annapolis Sailboat Show. All that’s missing is you!

Bay News: Coastal Classic returns, Bay of Islands Walking Weekend

Coastal Classic returns

For the past 42 years the fleet of the Coastal Classic yacht race has left Auckland and headed north to arrive at Russell wharf somewhere between nine or so hours later or as much as a day after the start.

Last year conditions were tricky and nearly half the fleet didn’t finish. Line honours went to Wired, the Tp52 yacht skippered by Rob Bassett. A close second, by eight minutes, was the catamaran of Okiato’s Erle Williams.

The original concept for the race came from Roger Dilley from the then Auckland Multihull Sailing Association and was loosely based on the speed record attempts by power boats dating back to the 1920s over the same course.

Twelve crews took up the challenge in 1982 and Roger coined the name “Coastal Classic”. Krisis, skippered by Duncan (Cookie) Stuart was the first boat into Russell and his record of 18 hours was not broken for four years.

In 1984 three all-women crews took part including a team aboard a 1910 cutter called Maeva. The first boat in, sailed exclusively by a female crew, was awarded the Te Hoe o Wairaka trophy.

Carved by Te Hau Tutua, it is named after Wairaka, daughter of the chief of the Mataatua canoe who beached the canoe after it had accidentally been set adrift with only one woman on board.

Over the years the race has attracted as many as 200 starters in 1995 to around 164 in 2023, but it is, nonetheless, one of the biggest yachting events of its type in the world.

This year several entrants are making a mad dash from Barcelona where they are attending the America’s Cup event to get back to Auckland in time to start the Coastal Classic. Whether they make it in time is still to be determined, given the cancellations to date in Spain because of weather.

Port Whangārei Marine Centre has joined the PIC as a key sponsor. The event takes place on Friday, October 25.

Russell’s grand old lodge

Arcadia Lodge is a boutique accommodation establishment that sits high on the hill overlooking Matauwhi Bay in Russell/Kororāreka.

To quote a Jeremiah proverb the property exists (in which to) “refresh the weary and satisfy the faint” and this year it celebrates 100 years of doing just that. There are, however, two schools of thought.

Arcadia Lodge, celebrating many years as an accommodation lodge in Russell.

One is that it became Arcadia Lodge as early as 1924 (hence the 100-year celebration) but others suggest it didn’t become an accommodation lodge until 1930. Documentation to prove either has been lost but there is no doubt it is one of Russell’s iconic and well-established small hotels.

The lodge structure is original. It was built in 1902 by Rev Robert Goodine Boler for his wife and six children. It was the third house he built and the current owners, Peter Gillan and Greg Hoover, understand that much of the wood used in the construction was reclaimed and barged up north from Wellington.

It has solid kauri floors throughout and was originally built on a whale bone vertebrae, one of which sits in Arcadia’s lounge and the other is held by Russell Museum.

Across the years Arcadia has been everything from a boarding house, a backpackers and a youth centre for teenagers to go after school. At one point it was registered by Far North Council to hold 24 people.

Arcadia Lodge, celebrating many years as an accommodation lodge in Russell.

Peter Gillan says it’s a “stay with personality” that has its own character with uneven floors and is sometimes classed as “quirky”.

“But” says Gillan, “we are only as good as the next guest walking through the door.”

Sitting beside Arcadia Lodge is Arcadia Cottage which is classified as a “renovated shed” but much is not known about the cottage since the records were lost in a council fire in Whangārei years ago.

Today it is a fully self-contained cottage that has gone through many renovations and yet it holds the greatest occupancy rate for the Arcadia business as a whole.

Pop-ups and consultation

For 10 days from April to May this year the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board conducted a series of “pop-up” consultations in Russell to discuss speed limits on roads in the region and the potential future of The Strand, the Russell waterfront road, among other more aesthetic subjects.

There were 446 ideas to improve The Strand and waterfront and 175 ideas for small changes. There were 724 “likes” on Facebook and 126 comments.

Subsequently the Far North District Council (FNDC) called for feedback on its speed management plan which proposes to lower the speed around schools, marae and downtown in urban and rural areas within the Russell-Kororāreka catchment area.

A group of Russell residents discuss roading and other issues at the local pop-up consultation hub in April.

The catchment area includes the communities of Russell, Ōkiato, Rāwhiti and Kāretu. Council declared it wants to set speed limits “that better acknowledge local conditions and surrounding environment.”

One road under discussion is the main road from Russell to the car ferry on-ramp at Ōkiato. It starts as Russell-Whakapara Road and merges into Aucks Rd with a current open speed limit of 100km/h. This speed limit reduces to 70km/h within 500m of the ferry on-ramp in Ōkiato.

Residents suggest where it is currently the open speed limit, that speeds be reduced to 80km/h, or even 60km/h, and 50km/h through Ōkiato.

There are two different authorities governing these two main roads. The Whangārei District Council (WDC) has authority over Russell-Whakapara Rd while the FNDC governs Aucks Rd. After more than a decade of asking for speeds to be reduced on both roads, neither hasn’t been actioned.

New speed limits in Paihia became mandatory in June. Some of the roads with reduced limits came under the authority of FNDC while the main waterfront road, Marsden Rd, falls under the jurisdiction of NZ Transport Authority (NZTA) or Waka Kotahi since it’s a state highway.

The deadline for FNDC to receive feedback submissions on the speed management plan is 5pm on Monday, September 30.

Bay of Islands Walking Weekend

In mid-October the well-established Bay of Islands Walking Weekend kicks off four days of rambling, hiking, strolling and even imbibing. Many of the walks are labelled “walk to wine” and there are several opportunities to do just that.

There are a variety of walks to choose from which cater for every level of fitness, from 2km to 21km. The weekend is now in its eleventh year and every year the aim is to have a few new walks.

Some of the walkers take a rest during the Bay of Islands Walking Weekend, pictured here at Kotikoti which is over private land.

Last year, for instance, the PhatHouse Brewery River walk was established along the Waitangi River, through native bush to end up at Haruru Falls and the brewery for a behind-the-scenes tour and the chance to savour beer straight from the tank.

Also last year Barefoot Sailing Adventures was introduced as a “walk”. It is a sail on a catamaran to Moturua Island to beaches that date back to the Polynesian voyages of 1320. On offer is a walk from the beach through the bush and back to the beach.

New this year is a walk with a finish at the well-known Eagles Nest, an exclusive luxury lodged that has panoramic vistas across the Bay of Islands. It’s a “bubble and squeak” walk with a glass or two of champers at the end.

The Rakaumangman walk to Cape Brett lighthouse is an overnight walk for the fit. For the less fit there is the Club “humour in the heart of Russell” walk or the Pahia lookout walk with lunch afterwards at Charlotte’s Kitchen on the wharf.

Then there’s the Twin Coast Cycle Trail bike-and-walk option or the Island Hop, to Urupukapuka and Motuarohia Islands. Also available is the Kotikoti Walk which is over private land.

Northland Ferries offer ferry tickets for the walks for those who need to take the commercial boats. Bay of Islands Walking Weekend is on October 10, 11, 12 and 13.
