Exclusive: Inside superyacht support vessel Nebula – Boat International

The global authority in superyachting 13 images Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon has shared the first images of the support vessel Nebula exclusively with BOAT International. Kate Lardy takes a look around… With the delivery of its third yacht support vessel, 68.2 metre Nebula , this past May, Astilleros Armon shows that the third time really is the charm. That’s saying a lot considering that the Spanish shipyard’s first hull, Hodor , is a World Superyacht Award winner. Nebula takes the design and interior finish of the catamaran concept to new heights, while providing a fully enclosed hangar for an Airbus H145 helicopter. This latter requirement was the biggest challenge for the exterior designer, Kirsten Schwalgien of Kirsten Schwalgien Yacht Design : how to integrate the 14.5- by 12-metre enclosure. “The whole project started off with incorporating this. We developed different versions and then in the end we thought that it actually works best if you keep the box as a box, and don’t try to hide it too much,” says Schwalgien. It is the largest hangar found on any private vessel and allows the twin-engine rotorcraft to slide in without folding its five blades, ensuring it’s always at the ready. Moreover, the immense helideck provides cover for the tenders on the main deck below, a 12-metre custom catamaran (designed by Schwalgien and built by Compass), two RIBs and four jet skis. With toy-carrying duties accounted for, Schwalgien turned her attention to the interior, which hosts 12 crew cabins, eight staff cabins and one VIP guest cabin. As designer of both the exterior and interior, she had a holistic view. She continued the two-tone grey “techy” look inside, punctuated by accents of orange using fluorescent Perspex acrylic and materials in which the colour appears naturally, like Corten steel and Jurassic stone with Nerinea fossils. “This is a boat designed for the crew so we could take a younger, much more edgy, a bit quirky approach,” she says. “The brief was to make sure the crew feels really at home,” continues Schwalgien, who also took care to ensure the shadow vessel crew felt equal to those working on the mothership. Looking at two notable spaces on board, the sundeck and the upper-deck lounge, one could argue that their facilities eclipse the mothership. Under a mix of sun and shade, the top deck encompasses a lounge with sofas, a yoga area and an al fresco gym with state-of-the-art equipment fitted under the arch. It also acts as an outdoor cinema. “It gives the whole range of things that you would want to do when you want to relax in your free time,” Schwalgien says. The layout of the upper-deck lounge, which enjoys a forward-facing view from the breakfast bar and bespoke sofa, takes crewmembers' needs into account. It has an acoustically isolated phone booth for one to three people to retreat to for private conversations or to study. There are also two glass-fronted meeting rooms flanking the main lounge, both bright with natural light from the forward windows. The hull form and naval architecture were developed by Incat Crowther , its speedy, efficient hull form well proven in commercial service. “Instead of having a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with four engines in order to have 21 knots of speed, we have an all-aluminium catamaran platform, and with two engines we are doing the same speed as our competitor in the monohull platform,” says Juan Ricardo Garcia, commercial director at Armon. Nebula is the largest shadow vessel produced by Astilleros Armón , with a beam 1.5 metres wider than the previous two hulls to accommodate the essential heli hangar. Furthermore, she was designed with a level of consideration for crew that’s rarely, if ever, seen, even on the largest luxury superyachts. “What was asked of us had never been done before. But what the client wants is what we give them, and our people and their skills have more than proven what we are capable of,” Garcia says. Superyacht victims' cause of death was 'death by confinement,' autopsies show: report

F our of the seven people who died in the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht last month  off the coast of Sicily  passed away after being trapped alive inside the ship’s cabins and suffocated, autopsies have reportedly revealed.

New York City lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, along with Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy all died due to "death by confinement," according to forensics results, the Italian outlet La Repubblica reports.

The so-called "dry drowning" supports the hypothesis that the four were awake as the ship went down and had been desperately inhaling oxygen in a tight air bubble until it tragically ran out. They had no water in their lungs, trachea or stomach, according to the tests carried out by pathologists with the Palermo Institute of Forensic Medicine.

LUXURY YACHT CAPTAIN FACES MANSLAUGHTER INVESTIGATION AFTER DEATHS OF BRITISH TECH MOGUL, 6 OTHERS

The four victims, along with tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch – who had organized the yacht trip to celebrate a recent legal victory – were found in a cabin on the port, or left side of the hull, after the Bayesian capsized and sank  within about 16 minutes of being hit by a predawn storm on Aug. 19.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was found in the next cabin, also on the port side of the hull. La Repubblica reports that Lynch’s wife attempted to save her husband and daughter but as the boat shook, she cut her bare feet on glass and fell to the ground. She could not walk for a week because of the cuts.

The ship sank tilted on its starboard side and, as the oxygen ran out, their air pockets became toxic with carbon dioxide, which ultimately led to their deaths.

YACHT MAKER SAYS ‘INDESCRIBABLE’ CREW ERRORS LED TO FATAL SICILY SHIPWRECK

The ship's cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found immediately next to the wreck.

Autopsies on the bodies of Lynch, his daughter and Thomas are scheduled for Friday, according to La Repubblica.

Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht was anchored.

The Bayesian had 22 people on board – 12 passengers and 10 crew. Fifteen people, including Lynch's wife, were rescued from the 184-foot British-flagged luxury yacht.

Morvillo was one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers in a fraud case involving the 2011 sale of search engine company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in an $11 billion deal that turned sour over allegations that Lynch had cooked the books to overvalue Autonomy, the AP reported. He was acquitted in June.

Prosecutors reportedly are investigating the captain and two crew members for possible responsibility in connection  with the sinking . A cause of the ship's sinking has yet to be determined.

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of a manufacturing company responsible for building the yacht, has blamed a series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew for the vessel’s demise.

Costantino told Reuters that the yacht’s crew made an "incredible mistake" of not being ready for the storm, which was included in shipping forecasts. The passengers should have been called out of their cabins and ordered to assemble at a safety point as the ship was preparing for the storm by taking measures such as pulling up the anchor, the CEO said.

Costantino ruled out design or construction flaws as reasons the ship sank, saying it was unlikely after 16 years of trouble-free navigation, including in more severe weather than Bayesian encountered this week.

Instead, he blamed the yacht’s crew for the "incredible mistake" of not being prepared for the storm, which was included in shipping forecasts. The passengers should have been called out of their cabins and assembled at a safety point as the ship was preparing for the storm by pulling up the anchor, the CEO said.

Additionally, doors and hatches should have been closed, and the keel should have been lowered to increase stability, among other safety measures, Costantino declared.

Fox News’ Greg Norman, Stephen Sorace and Greg Wehner, as well as The Associated Press contributed to this report.

4 victims on Mike Lynch's yacht were trapped inside air bubbles before suffocating, report suggests

  • Four victims in a sunken superyacht were likely trapped inside air bubbles, per Italian media.
  • The four ran out of oxygen and suffocated, la Repubblica reported, citing autopsy results.
  • The yacht sank last month, claiming seven lives, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Insider Today

Four of the bodies recovered from Mike Lynch's superyacht showed signs that they had been trapped inside air bubbles before suffocating to death, an Italian media report said.

La Repubblica, citing autopsy results, reported that four of the seven victims who died after British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month died of "atypical drowning."

The autopsies found no water in their lungs, trachea, or stomach, which suggested that they ran out of oxygen while stuck inside air pockets in one of the yacht's cabins, per the outlet.

Pathologists from the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Palermo's Polyclinic carried out the autopsies on the bodies of Lynch's attorney Chris Morvillo; his wife, Neda Morvillo; the Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer; and his wife, Judy Bloomer, on Monday and Tuesday, the report said.

Tiziana Lenzo, a press officer for Palermo's Polyclinic, told Business Insider that the hospital was not allowed to comment on the autopsy results because the incident is under investigation.

The 183-foot Bayesian superyacht sank on August 19 during stormy weather near Porticello, prompting the Italian Coast Guard to launch a search-and-rescue effort.

Fifteen of the 22 people on board survived, while seven — including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter — were confirmed dead.

Matthew Schanck, the chairman of the UK's Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told BI last month, while the rescue efforts were still ongoing, that divers were likely searching for air pockets where survivors may be located.

Meanwhile, Nick Sloane, who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation, told Sky News at the time that divers had a "very small" window of time to try to locate anyone stuck inside, hopefully in "an air pocket."

In the aftermath of the sinking, some have focused blame on crew members.

Related stories

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the firm that built the Bayesian in 2008, criticized crew members for not following protocol and failing to prepare for the storm.

Costantino told the Financial Times that the yacht was "designed to be absolutely stable."

Franco Romani, a nautical architect who was part of the team that designed the yacht, told La Stampa that the Bayesian was built to go to sea in "any weather" and that a side hatch left open could have let water enter the vessel, per Reuters.

During a press conference last month, investigators said five bodies had been discovered in the same cabin.

Italian prosecutors said they had opened a manslaughter investigation following the sinking.

The captain of the yacht, James Cutfield from New Zealand, and two Britons — an engineer, Tim Parker Eaton, and a crew member, Matthew Griffiths — have been placed under investigation, per Sky News .

Bayesian yacht sinking: Banking boss among four victims who ‘suffocated in cabin air bubble’

Intial autopsies suggest at least four victims likely died as a result of oxygen running out onboard, article bookmarked.

Four of the victims of the Bayesian yacht disaster died after oxygen ran out in an air bubble on the sunken boat, it has been reported.

Autopsies over the past few days on four of those who died have revealed an absence of water in their lungs, suggesting they suffocated as the air became saturated with carbon dioxide, Italian publication La Repubblica said.

The outlet reported post-mortems showed four people died from “atypical drowning”, with “no water in their lungs, trachea and stomach”. There were no signs of external injuries.

The results appear to back up investigators’ opinions that the victims sought out air pockets inside the ship before they died.

The incident, which claimed the lives of seven people including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, unfolded last month after a violent storm hit the yacht off the coast of Sicily .

The yacht sank quickly , trapping the victims below deck as it settled on its right side. Divers who retrieved the victims’ bodies on board found five of them, including Mr Lynch, in one cabin on the left side of the yacht. Hannah Lynch’s body was the last to be found, in a separate cabin.

Jonathan Bloomer had a 50-year career in the finance sector, while his wife Judith worked as a psychotherapist for nearly 30 years

The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was also recovered floating near the wreckage, which lies 50 metres below the surface.

Investigators believe the victims sought out remaining air pockets as the vessel moved sharply to the right while sinking.

However, it is unlikely to have lasted long as it would have been “small and quickly filled with rising levels of toxic carbon dioxide”.

The findings of the autopsies, detailed in La Repubblica on Wednesday, appeared to support this theory.

Among the victims examined so far were Jonathan Bloomer, the international chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank; his wife Judith, a psychotherapist; Christopher Morvillo, a US lawyer; and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer.

Previous reports suggested Mr and Mrs Morvillo, whose autopsies were carried out first, both died by drowning .

But post-mortems have found the lungs of the four people were “not fully of water”, which is otherwise known as “dry drowning”.

La Repubblica reported Ms Barcares, who is also the CEO of the company that owns the superyacht, made it to the deck barefoot but only thought about saving her daughter and her husband trapped below.

As the boat reared up, she cut herself on broken glass and was unable to reach the cabins and help Mr Lynch and their daughter Hannah before the electrical blackout on the Bayesian.

For a week after the sinking, she said she could not walk because of the lacerations to her feet.

Autopsies on Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah are scheduled for Friday

The remaining autopsies, on Mr Lynch, his daughter, and chef Recaldo Thomas, are scheduled for Friday, the newspaper added.

Nine crew members and six passengers, including Mr Lynch’s wife, survived by escaping on an inflatable life raft.

Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the yacht’s captain, New Zealander James Cutfield, along with two Britons - engineer Tim Parker Eaton and crew member Matthew Griffiths - over allegations of possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck.

Mr Parker Eaton denied claims that external doors were left open during the storm, which reportedly allowed water to flood the engine room.

According to Italian news agency Ansa, Mr Griffiths - who was on watch duty at the time - told investigators: “I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots (23 mph/37 kph). He gave orders to wake everyone else.

“The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could.

“We were walking on the walls (of the boat). We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother.”

The men have been permitted to leave Sicily as investigators work to piece together the crucial events that unfolded in the 16-minute window between the yacht being hit by a suspected “downburst” storm at 3.50am and its rapid sinking at 4.06am, just 400 metres from its anchorage near the Sicilian port of Porticello.

Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.

Nebula Yachts signs contract for 63.5m new build

Nebula Yachts signs contract for 63.5m new build

Turkish shipyard Nebula Yachts has signed a contract for the build of a 63.5-metre superyacht known as NBL 103.

Commissioned by an experienced owner, the project takes inspiration from his previous build, sailing yacht All About U , and aims to "blend the elegance of a sailing yacht with the comfort of a motor yacht," according to the yard. Construction is already underway with the keel laying ceremony held last month.

NBL 103 features design by Adeo Yacht Design with naval architecture by Ginton Naval Architects , the latter of which worked on the previous All About U.

The new build promises "expansive deck areas" granted by a "wide hull" and a 12-metre beam. Key features include wraparound windows on the main deck, fold-down bulwarks on the swim platform and a bright blue hull.

The interiors are light and airy with mostly neutral shades, light-wood parquet flooring and pops of muted colour. The main saloon features a lounge to port with a wine cellar showpiece, and a longitudinal dining table to starboard with a bar upon entry.

Other areas of note include the sundeck, with a square-shaped sit-up bar with seating that hugs the forward curve, shaded al fresco dining on the main deck and a beach club lounge with a gym.

"We are thrilled to introduce the stunning 63.5-metre motor yacht," said Serkan Surer, CEO of Nebula Yachts. "This project represents our passion for craftsmanship and innovation, creating unforgettable moments for our valued clients."

NBL 103 will be built to RINA class and is expected to have a top speed of 16 knots.

Also under construction at Nebula Shipyard is a 57-metre motor yacht with delivery in summer 2024.
